Author procrastination
WHY (YOU THINK) you are not working on your book
* I'm too busy. I just can't find the time.
* I'm not sure how to start my project. Which idea should go into the first chapter?
* I'm not sure if I have enough information yet. I need to do more research.
* I don't know if my idea is worth the time. I need to find out if the book is marketable before I start.
THE REAL REASON you are not working on your book
Perhaps
... or ...
... something about the book has triggered a negative emotion that you are actively trying to avoid.
I’ve heard a lot of excuses about why potential authors don’t start or finish their books. In fact, I’ve been there and done that (and, if I’m honest, am doing that right now!).
However, research indicates that procrastination is more often about avoiding negative emotions than it is about time management. So, if all those time-management tips that you’ve been trying – the to-do lists, getting up earlier, rearranging your time, Pomodoro technique, etc. -- aren’t helping, perhaps you need to look at what you are avoiding instead.
What is it about this book that makes your blood run cold, your heart beat faster, and your muscles freeze like you’re a deer staring into the headlights of an oncoming car?

Bust through procrastination
We all know the feeling. You’re sitting at your desk, staring at a blank screen. The cursor blinks mockingly at you as the minutes tick by. You check your email, scroll through social media, get up for a snack… and before you know it, hours have gone by and you haven’t accomplished anything.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In fact, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association, 20 percent of Americans identify themselves as chronic procrastinators.
So what is procrastination, exactly? And more importantly, how can we overcome it?
