Acts of Kindness
People talk about core memories, and they are usually something poignant or steeped in meaning. But something that has stuck with me was a very simple act: Picking up a pen I had dropped on the floor.
I was in Junior High. That year, a group of refugees from Viet Nam began attending. They spoke no English and pretty much stuck to themselves. But they were the kindest and most polite people I had ever experienced in that school.
One day, at a general assembly, I ended up sitting next to them. I dropped my pen and as I scrambled to pick it back up, the Vietnamese guy sitting next to me picked it up and handed it to me. In that moment, I felt like I mattered.
At that time in my life, I was very unpopular and bullied quite a bit. And yet, this young man treated me with respect and kindness.
And I’ve never forgotten.
Never underestimate the effect you can have on someone else’s life.
What is an act of kindness someone showed you?
