An Uncommon Fairy Tale of Independence
As a little girl, my favorite fairy tale was that of Cinderella. I didn't know why, but I really identified with her. And, as my life unfolded, I had more in common with her than I would have liked. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
Many people look at the Cinderella tale and take away that she was a passive participant in her life, and needed a handsome prince to rescue her from the clutches of her evil stepmother and stepsisters.
But I like to look at the story a different way ... Cinderella's tale is not just about finding her Prince Charming, but also about her journey towards independence and self-discovery.
So, in honor of Independence Day here in the U.S., I give you a different perspective on my favorite fairy tale:
Cinderella's life was far from glamorous. She endured the cruelty of her stepmother and stepsisters, living in a house where she was constantly belittled and marginalized. Yet, beneath her humble exterior, Cinderella possessed an unwavering spirit and an indomitable will to rise above her circumstances.
Her journey to independence began with her unwavering belief in her own worth. Despite being treated as a servant, Cinderella held onto her dreams and never lost sight of her true self. She wasn't a servant ... she was of service.
Cinderella had a kind heart, a gentle soul, and an innate strength that helped her navigate the challenges thrown across her path. And that's why her independence wasn't just about breaking free from her oppressive environment; it was about finding her voice and defining her own destiny. She refused to be defined by her circumstances, and instead, she took control of her own life. And, on that fateful bibbidi bobbidi boo night, she transformed not only her appearance but also her mindset, never losing faith in herself and the possibilities that lay ahead.
