Lord Hawkridge lifted his hand and reached toward her so slowly, so tenderly, so hesitantly, that Faith had plenty of time to stop him long before his warm familiar fingers curved against the side of her face.
Yet she did not.
“I missed you.” Hawk’s voice was gravelly, his gaze anguished. “I still miss you.”
Faith did not trust herself to respond. She doubted she needed to. Allowing him to cradle her face in the palm of his hand was as much a confession as torture.
Now he would know the truth.
She yearned for him. Had never stopped yearning. Her body could not be trusted to accomplish self-preservation. Nor could her heart. It was cracking open even as she gazed up at him in wordless need.

Time to dance.
Hawk made his way from the center of the salon to the dais where Faith stood rooted with bright pink cheeks. Heart racing, he lifted an outstretched hand and held his breath.
Faith’s indecision was palpable. So were the thumping feet of the rowdy students, the fairylike sparkles of the mirrored candles, the intoxicating sweetness of the violin’s melody.
It was not going to work. She was not going to take his hand. Hawk was being given the cut direct in front of two dozen indigent orphans and he had never felt a keener blow.
Just as he started to lower his hand, she lifted hers.
His breath caught. Faith’s eyes were not full of forgiveness but resignation. Yet it was more than he had hoped for. More than he deserved. It was a start.
He helped her down from the dais and placed his other hand about her waist.
The last time he had touched her, she’d had thin, coltish limbs and worn debutante pastels. Now, she was nothing but soft, womanly curves. Even more perfect than last he’d seen her.
Even more perfect than last they touched.

This hero appeared in my very first book! I’ve been getting email requesting his story ever since. I am thrilled to have his story available at last.
Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Not at all. I wanted to be an astronaut, or at least a physicist, and got my degree in mathematics. Then I worked as a computer programmer, writing insurance administration software, which was the first sign things had gone askew… I was nearly 30 before I thought I might try writing a book, and it turned out to be much more fun than writing code!
Who was your first auto-buy historical romance author?
Lisa Kleypas. When I discovered her books, it was as if a great spotlight of awareness went on for me. THAT was the way books ought to be!
