Duct Tape Wallets: Demo in Port Chester, NY

 A duct tape wallet as a holiday gift? You bet!

Duct tape comes in a wide variety of colors and prints. With a few basic tricks, you can make a stylish wallet using the sticky stuff.

Halloween Masks!

October is...Mask Month! 
If you live in the lower Westchester county area, I'll be holding two duct tape mask workshops for kids this Saturday, October 31, at the Rye Arts Center. Ages 8-9: 10:00 - 11:30am
Ages 10 and up: 12:00 - 1:30pm

Of course the masks that the kids will make won't be quite as elaborate as the one in the photo to the left. But I'll have it on hand if anyone wants to touch it or try it on. (The scary head form--let's call her Evanka--will also be present; you are forewarned!)

Going Outside The Comfort Zone

It's hard sometimes to figure things out--visually and in life.

While trying to find a new form and a trusty method to create collages, I've sat and stared at my easel for hours. I'll cut a piece of paper and glue it to the grid. I'll rip it out and start all over again. It's hard to see where all the pieces fit. It's easier to remain inert and contemplate the infinite possibilities.

Harmony or tension. Balance or instability. Which choice proves to be the more dynamic composition?


Surprisingly, I learned this from my son Mack. When I watch him play baseball, he's always taking chances and constantly pushing his boundaries. If he's on base, he'll take a big lead. If he's catching, he'll try to throw out someone at 2nd base. When I sit in the stands, I see all the other parents gleefully clap when he takes that chance. I bask in his confidence that whatever happens, he won't regret his actions. He does all he can and he never thinks, what if?

So I go outside my comfort zone and shake off the dust. I place another strip of paper on the grid, and repeat this over and over until my collage is done. Keep trying. Keep pushing.



I'll take that big lead. I'll try to throw that runner out. No regrets.

Bags N Bubbly at REcologie

I'm starting a series of adult crafting events that focus on no-sew (aka duct tape) clutch bags. The first one is set for Thursday, June 11th, at REcologie in New Rochelle, NY. You can purchase tickets via Eventbrite. The next ones after that will be in New Jersey, and the rest will be in the NY/NJ/CT area.

Each participant will get to select one from three different styles: the bag above, and the two below.

 

These events will lead up to the publication of my next book, which will be on (you guessed it) duct tape bags which should be in the spring of 2016.

Tumblr..too much?

So I signed up for a Tumblr account, but now there are too many "things" to manage. Anyone else having these 21st century problems?

Anyway, here is the latest photo collage that will eventually turn into a cyanotype series called "Filipiniana Faces." I will post more next week. I posted more of them on my Tumblr page: http://richelafm.tumblr.com/

In the meantime, my friend Tony Wilkinson has an exhibition of his graphite drawings at AI Friedman in Port Chester, NY. I highly recommend going to see it...because he did a portrait of me! I'm going to check it out tomorrow and I'll post some pics shortly thereafter.
