POETRY: ROMANCE ISN’T DEAD… IT’S MADE YOU ITS BITCH BY PAUL TRISTRAM

…And as you kick and scream

at the supposed unfairness

to the end of an unnatural pairing.

Drink a thousand rivers dry,

desert your tear ducts, completely.

Another Valentines Day

is licking the crooked lips

of its Zombie Clown mask

and getting ready to shove

its delightful face

back up into your biscuit.

POETRY: MUSICAL – VOCAL UFO BY PAUL TRISTRAM

I have read about this somewhere before

so I am aware of what is going on.

I’m either having a nervous breakdown

or going INSANE?

There is a Female Opera Singer

with a Full Orchestra behind her

playing inside my cranium.

Not in the centre

like when you listen to headphones.

No, this is more in the background

it’s fainter, like the theme music to a film.

It’s been going on for a few days now.

I’m laying upon this sleepless settee

making faces to myself in the dark,

whistling, humming different tunes

but nothing that I do seems to work

so I jump up onto my neurotic feet

and glide into the kitchen…whoosh!

I make a roll-up, I don’t need to concentrate

but I do and it helps slightly

so I make another one and then another one

until soon I have twenty-five of them

all in a row on the kitchen table.

Twenty-five individual pieces of proof

that for a small amount of time

I did something constructive and positive

using both focus and skill.

I laugh out loud

immediately sounding like someone else

and reach down for the lighter.

Then instantly start upon the necessary task

of smoking away the evidence.

ARTWORK: VOICES FROM A COMA 3

Manipulation-HQQuarterly Horror Anthology with a different theme each time!

Theme: Manipulation

Deadline: TBC

Word Count: up to 3500 (if over, please enquire)

Format: .doc or .docx; double spaced; Times New Roman or Arial; font size: 12

Reprints: Not if printed within last 5 years; may be subject to re-write

What we want:

Well written stories from both new and experienced authors that incorporate each anthology’s theme. However subtle this is carried out is down to the individual. Not interested in vampires, werewolves, zombies etcetera. Story containing any of these elements must be of exceptional quality. Gore MUST be intrinsic to the story. Excessive, over-the-top, unnecessary descriptions of viscera, rape, paedophilia, necrophilia or harm to animals will be binned. These are subjects that when written about must be tackled in a respectable manner. Anything deemed extreme will be seen as glorification and will be discarded.

We want stories that shock. Want stories that make you squirm. And think. And make you wonder about things. Not stories that make you question if the author is getting a little too much out of their story

Mother…

You personify the best and worst of the universe

Then you covered me up

You believed my existence serendipitous

But I ran out of luck

Gothic Tales of Terror via Vertigo Publishing

“I am looking for gothic horror stories in the tradition of classic Victorian horror writers like Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and Mary Shelley. Creepy castles, tragic love, and madness are just some of the things that could be included in your story or poem. Think about the elements of classic Victorian gothic horror, and interpret them in your own unique way. Science gone wrong, the search for immortality or control over the destiny of ourselves or humanity as a whole are just a few possibilities. All of these are merely ideas to get your brain churning. Come up with your own version. Make it unmistakably Victorian gothic horror, but also make it uniquely yours.”
