Blurb:
FBI profiler Alex Michaels’ life was shattered when a sadistic serial killer murdered her twin sister and left Alex with a career ending injury. Hoping to put the past behind her, she sets off across country with a truck driver she barely knows.
Royce McIntire knows Alex is on the run from something or someone, but he doesn’t care. He’s fallen in love with her and is finally getting his life back on track and wants to win back custody of his son.
The killer is hot on Alex’s trail though, determined to find the one victim who got away. As more bodies turn up dead Alex has no choice but to tell Royce who she really is. Will the love that has blossomed between them be strong enough to sustain them, or will the killer get to Alex before they even have a chance to find out?
Excerpt:
The house was dark as Alex Michaels drove onto the snow-covered lawn. She slammed the gearshift into park, pulled her gun from its holster, and jumped from the car. She swiped frantically at the tears as she stepped to the front door and grasped the knob. Please God… Please don't let me be too late. Her grip tightened on the 9mm as beads of perspiration formed on her forehead. Inside the entryway, she reached out with her left hand to flick the light switch.
The knife came out of nowhere.
A sharp pain, followed by a burning sensation, seared up her right forearm. Her fingers went numb and the gun clattered to the floor. She jabbed with her left arm, her clenched fist coming in contact with the jaw hidden behind a black ski mask.
The intruder retaliated with a punch to her right cheek that slammed her body back against the door. The room swirled. Her knees grew weak. She struggled to stand on solid ground. With a fist full of her hair, the attacker jerked back her head as his knee rammed her rib cage, forcing a gush of air from her lungs.
She cried out as her knees buckled and she fell. Another blow to her rib cage knocked her back onto the floor. Her left arm pinned beneath her, she raised a bloody right arm toward the intruder and stared in horror at her hand dangling lifelessly.
With the full weight of his body pinning her, she writhed beneath him, trying to free her left arm.
"Fight me, Alex. Show me you're not as weak as the rest."
"I swear I'm going to kill you." Using her feet as leverage, she rolled against him, but she was no match for his strength.
He laughed. "Come on, Alex. Your sister put up a better fight than this."
A sob escaped her lips. She could still hear Cassie's cries for help and her blood curdling screams of terror.
"Sorry you didn't make it in time to say goodbye. But you'll be with her soon enough."

Jenny needs another skilled cowboy around, but Gil is more than she bargained for.
Single mother Jenny Holloway has her hands full running a 1200-acre ranch, and keeping her daredevil son out of the emergency room. So when her foreman suggests she hire on his son Gil Montgomery, who just got home from the war, Jenny jumps at the opportunity of having another skilled cowboy around.
Gil was used to taking orders, even from women. What he wasn’t prepared for was the feelings this little firecracker of a woman triggered in him. Jenny is a lot like the bronco she’s rescued and is now trying to break. The unexpected death of her husband has left her jaded and afraid to risk her heart getting broken again. Somehow, he has to gain her trust and prove that he isn’t going anywhere.
Excerpt:
Gil helped distribute and light all the candles. By the time they were done it was almost as bright as if the lights had never gone out.
"Thanks, guys," Jenny said.
Gil looked over at her. She looked miserable. "How's the pain?"
"It's okay."
It was the answer he had expected. Gil picked up a stack of magazines from a nearby table and moved to one of the chairs. He sorted through the titles of mostly ranching magazines until he found one on sports. The minutes crept by and every now and then they could hear a loud crash. As much as he hated being stuck somewhere where he couldn't see what was going on, he dreaded the moment when they would walk out of the basement. He'd seen on TV the amount of destruction a tornado could produce in the matter of seconds.
"Can I ask you something, Gil?" Jenny asked.
He glanced up from his magazine. "Sure."
"Earlier when we were leaving the barn and the lightning struck, what happened to you?"
He hesitated a moment, not quite sure how to answer her without leaving the impression that he was mentally unstable.
"Did you have some sort of a flashback?"
"Yeah," he admitted. "Loud noises and flashes of light sometime trigger's a memory. But it doesn't happen very often... I mean there's nothing to worry about."
"I wasn't worried, Gil. I was just curious. I'm sorry I brought it up."
He smiled. "Don't be. I didn't mean to sound so defensive. It's just some people, after learning that I was in the war, get a little nervous around me."
"I'm sorry people treat you that way. They shouldn't."
"No. What people don't understand is that when a soldier is in battle they don't have time to think about it, to process it correctly in their minds. So when they get home those memories that have been suppressed sometimes occur when we least expect them."
"That makes sense."
"The trick is to pretend that you're not shaken by them."
"I barely noticed."
"You're not a very good liar."
"No, I don't suppose I am. What happened is perfectly understandable though."
He smiled. "Thanks."
"You're welcome. Now will you stop hogging all the magazines and hand me one of them?"

BLURB:Fueled by grief after his fiancée is brutally murdered, Detective Sam Walker focuses on finding her killer -- a calculating predator who binds books with human skin. Dani Barrington, the newest member of NOPD's Victim and Witness Assistance Unit and a survivor of another frightening attack, helps him discover the terrifying link between the monster's known victims. Despite his anguish, Sam is struck by Dani's strength and determination, especially when her inquisitive nature makes her the killer's next target. He must find a way to protect her or risk losing the one woman who can bring his dead heart back to life.
Excerpt:
Kristen was gone.
She wasn't at work. She wasn't at home. She hadn't gone out to run an errand. She had simply... vanished.
New Orleans Detective Sam Walker stood in the center of his fiancée's cluttered bedroom and struggled to piece together the timeline of her disappearance. Last night they were supposed to meet for dinner, but he'd caught a case. They'd talked on the phone around eleven, and he'd asked her to meet him for lunch today.
He hadn't spoken to her since.
She was supposed to arrive at the Victim and Witness Assistance Unit for work at nine a.m., but never made it. One of her co-workers had called him about ten o'clock. He'd tried Kristen again, but she hadn't answered.
So he'd come here and found her car in the driveway.
Yet she sure as hell wasn't here.
Her bed was meticulously made, the way she left it every morning, dumping him out if he'd stayed over. A damp towel lay beside the bathroom sink. Soulful jazz drifted from the iPod dock on her nightstand. What terrified him most, though, was the spot of blood marring the door frame and the lone pink sandal lying in the living room floor beside her purse, keys, and cell phone.
His heart lurched. He couldn't breathe, couldn't think. Simply could not absorb that she was missing. They'd been engaged for five months and three days, with only a month to go until the wedding. They should be mulling over the guest list, squabbling about where to go for their honeymoon, and deciding where they wanted to live.
Instead, Sam stared at an empty bed.
"There's no sign of forced entry, so she either let the guy in or he jumped her when she went after the paper this morning." Major Sabbatini's voice seemed to come from far away. "I'm thinking she fought him off and ran, and he caught her here in the bedroom."
"She would have clawed him." Hell, she would've drawn blood with those nails. Sam should know. He had the marks on his back to prove it. Moisture blurred his vision as he eyed the smudge on the door jamb. "She... she just had her nails done a couple of days ago. They're like talons."
"We'll check the blood for DNA. You know that. What were her plans for today?"
"Um... just work, far as I know. She and I were supposed to have lunch." Sam shook his head. "Then tonight, she was going to a wedding shower. I just--"
"When was the last time you spoke with her?"
"Late -- last night." Sam's eyes fell on a partially-filled mug on the table beside Kristen's favorite chair, where she liked to read. A hard knot formed in the center of his chest. "She didn't... even finish her coffee. She loves coffee."
"We're gonna find her, son."
"You don't know that." Sam's voice cracked. He turned to his boss. "What if I never see her again?"

Excerpt: This scene takes place shortly after Morgan learns that her son has been kidnapped by the serial killer who was sent to prison for her husband’s murder.
Morgan had almost reached the bottom of the stairs when she heard a knock at the front door. “It’s me, Russo, open up.”She barely got the door open before he stepped inside and took her into his arms. “You okay?”“Yeah, I’m fine.” She stepped from his arms. “Did you find out anything?”“None of his friends saw him after school, but one of his teachers did remember seeing him leave the playground headed toward home.”“So he was waiting for him.”“You’ve heard something?”She nodded. “There was a message on my answering machine. Tate has him.”“Tate, are you sure?”“I’d know that voice anywhere.”“So it was him who killed those women?”“And now he’s got Jared.”“I don’t get it, Morgan, why would he risk coming back here?”“Because he intends to make good on his threat,” she said softly. Morgan stepped past him and made her way into the kitchen. After taking two cups from the cabinet, she filled them with the freshly made coffee. “You still think he’s innocent, don’t you?”She handed him a cup. “I, without a doubt, think he killed those women, but you and I both know the evidence that sent him to prison was planted.”“You didn’t answer my question, Morgan.”“No, I don’t think he killed Kevin.” “Well, if he didn’t kill Kevin, why did he kidnap Jared?”“I don’t know. It doesn’t make sense, but I know he’s got him. Those two young women and the sudden disappearance of my son, that isn’t a coincidence, Russo. He wants something.”“I think he’s messing with your head, just like he did for the year we tracked him, just like he’s been doing ever since. This idea of yours, that someone else killed Kevin, he’s organized it as well. He planted that seed of doubt in your head that day in the court room when he said he’d destroy you.”“Only because it made sense when nothing else did,” she snapped. “The whole time we tracked him, he never once messed up. He was meticulous. He didn’t take chances. The man we tracked would not have come into a well-populated neighborhood, break into the backdoor, and murder a man in his own bedroom while a young boy lay sleeping just down the hall.”“Yet you think he slipped into the same well populated neighborhood in broad daylight and kidnapped your son?” “Because he has a different agenda. He’s willing to take risks now because he knows he has nothing to lose. He knows when we do catch him, he’s either going back to prison or to the morgue.”“Which will make him all the more dangerous.” They both turned to find Chase standing in the doorway. He stepped forward, a book grasped in his outstretched hand. “I’m guessing this belongs to your son.” Morgan hesitated momentarily, recognizing the book immediately as Jared’s favorite. Then taking the book into her trembling hands, she brought it up to her chest. “Where did you find it?” she asked softly.“It was lying on the porch.”She turned to Russo.“He must have placed it there after I came in or I would have seen it.”“Seeing as how you two seem to already know who the kidnapper is, I don’t guess it’d do much good to run this for prints.” He reached inside his jacket, withdrew a plastic baggie and handed it to her. She took it. Through the plastic, she could clearly make out the crudely put together note of different-colored letters cut out of magazines. IF YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR SON AGAIN, YOU HAVE 72 HOURS TO FIND THE ANSWERS.“Speaking of answers, if you two don’t start giving me some straight ones real quick, I’m calling the captain,” Chase threatened. “Please, Chase, you can’t do that.”"I can, and I will if you don't tell me what is going on here."

EXCERPT
“Wait a minute, find a weapon.” Cassie picked up a heavy flashlight. “This works.” Roni grabbed the lighter. “I’ve got mine.” Kris reached for the baseball bat behind the sliding glass door. “I’m ready.” They looked at each other and broke into a fit of nervous giggles. “Shhhhh,” Kris said. “We’ll lose the element of surprise.” That only made them laugh harder, thanks in part to the wine and in part to the absurdity of the situation. After a minute, sanity prevailed. “Okay, stay together and try to be quiet. Let’s go.” Kris led the way to the path that circled around to her neighbor’s deck stairs. She stopped suddenly, listening intently. “What is it, why did you stop?” “I thought I heard something… where is the light?” With a clear view of the deck and the porch, it was obvious that no light source, moving or stationary, came from either. They stood quietly, straining to hear anything above the noise of the waves. “Maybe it was a firefly. There’s nothing there now. Let’s go back, this is creeping me out.” Roni turned back down the path. “Okay,” Kris and Cassie turned to join her. “If it was a firefly, it was the size of a golf ball and I sure don’t want to run into it.” Kris tried to ignore the quick chill leaving icy tracks up her spine. Every nerve ending was suddenly on alert. She spun quickly to see if anyone was following them, but no one was there. She turned back toward home just as the man stepped away from the dark side of the house.

Stopped Cold by Gail Pallotta
Blurb:Margaret McWhorter enjoys a laid-back Freshman year in high school flirting with Jimmy Willmore, swimming and hanging out with friends—until that day. Her brother, Sean, suffers a stroke from taking a steroid. Now he’s lying unconscious in a hospital. Margaret’s angry at her dad for pushing Sean to be a great quarterback, but a fire of hatred burns inside her to make the criminals pay. Looking for justice, she takes Jimmy and her best friend, Emily, through a twisted, drug-filled sub-culture. A clue sends them deep into the woods behind the school where they overhear drug dealers discuss Sean. Time and time again they walk a treacherous path and come face to face with danger. Even the cop on the case can’t stop them from investigating. All the while Margaret really wants to cure Sean, heal the hate inside, and open her heart to love.Excerpt:
Emily entered gasping for air as though she’d raced inside.
Leaning against the windowsill, I looked toward Mom then Dad.
“Sean’s had a stroke.” Dad spoke in a monotone.
Every fiber of my being weakened as I doubled over to keep from falling then sank onto the edge of the bed. I grasped the light blue spread and squeezed it hard in my fist. He was fine earlier this morning.
“He’s only eighteen. How could that happen?”
Dad gestured with his large hand. “He came down the steps and collapsed in the foyer.”
My stomach churned like a washing machine.
“We brought him to the emergency room. That’s the last we’ve seen of him.” Dad had a blank stare in his grayish blue eyes.
A man wearing a white jacket entered. “Hello, I’m Dr. Salis.” He shook my parents’ hands. While standing in the middle of the floor he talked about Sean as though he was delivering a speech or giving a weather report. “Sean’s stroke was a mild one. I don’t believe he’ll have permanent damage, but he may need therapy for his left arm.”
Anger, sorrow, and disbelief over Sean’s illness swirled in my head like a tornado. How could this happen?
“Sean’s never had a health problem. He’s an athlete. What caused this?” Mom asked.
“I’m sorry to tell you, but we found Winstrol V in Sean’s system.” A hint of compassion rang in Dr. Salis’s official-sounding tone.
Mom’s gaze grew distant. “What’s that?”
“It’s an anabolic steroid used in veterinary medicine. It carries many adverse side effects, including kidney and liver dysfunction. In some people there’s a risk of heart attack or stroke.” Dr. Salis spoke in a matter-of-fact tone.
“Why would anyone take it?” Mom’s questioning voice trailed off.
Dr. Salis took a deep sigh. “It enhances athletic performance.”
“In what way? I can’t imagine Sean taking something like that.” Mom spoke softly as though she talked to herself.
Dr. Salis raised his gray eyebrows. “Steroids build muscle mass and shorten the recovery time needed after strenuous workouts. Jocks who use them grow stronger and can practice more often.”
Mom’s eyes snapped open.
Was she thinking of the pressure Dad put on Sean?
“I don’t feel well. Margaret, would you get me some water?” Dad asked.
He was as white as Mistville’s winter snow. So fit, so strong, he rarely got sick, weak, or pale.
Anxious over the sight of him, I bounded off the bed, grabbed one of the paper cups out of the dispenser beside the sink, and filled it.
He reached out for it then took a sip as I dropped down into a black vinyl chair. Dad collected drops from the side of the container on his fingers then wiped his forehead with them. Some color returned to his face.
“Where would Sean get steroids for animals?” Dad gazed at Mom with a helpless stare.
How would she know? Nothing made any sense to me. Not the questions. Not the answers. They were all scrambled in my brain like letters from a Scrabble game that were scattered on a table.
Two uniformed policemen came in. Why were they here?
The older man with dark hair and brown eyes extended his right hand to Dad. “I’m Sergeant Jones. This is Detective Joe Garrett.”
Dad knitted his brows. “What are you doing here? Has the hospital announced to the world that my son’s in here because he took Winstrol V. What about the patient’s privacy act?”
Sergeant Jones rested his hand at his side. “No. Of course, the hospital has made no such announcement. There have been enough cases of kids checking in with drug-related problems for us to suspect criminal activity. The privacy act can be waived for the purposes of identifying certain classes of persons. In this case, that would be drug dealers. With your help we want to catch these people.”
Dad stared at the policemen with angry blue-gray eyes. “What can we do?”
“We need to know about Sean’s most recent activity, especially anything that led to his drug use.”
How dare Sergeant Jones accuse Sean of being an addict! Sean was president of the student council. He was a straight A student in one of the most difficult schools in the country. He was a Christian. He--I couldn’t even think now, and I couldn’t keep tears from rolling down my cheeks.
Dad got up and shook hands with the cops, but he didn’t smile. He looked like someone had slapped him.

Excerpt:
The footsteps drew closer. Her breathing quickened. The intruder paused outside the door and she held her breath, a death grip on the pepper spray. The barrel of a gun appeared through the doorway, followed by a man. In that split second, she blasted him with a steady stream.
“Shit!” he yelled, snapping his head away from the line of fire.
Unsure if she’d made a direct hit, she flew past him, still spraying the air behind her. Although it wasn’t a blanket mist, she couldn’t help but inhale some of the toxic vapors in the air. Her eyes burned slightly and she coughed, racing down the hallway and across the open foyer.
She was almost to the door when the guy yelled out in a raspy voice, “Touch that door handle and I’ll shoot it off.”
She came to a screeching halt, unsure if he planned on aiming for the handle or her hand. The blood pulsating in her ears muffled the roar of the lawn mower as it passed by near a window. Nobody would hear her scream. She eyed the security alarm keypad on the wall by the door. Two quick steps and she could hit the panic button. Two quick steps and she might get shot. She slowly turned around, her gaze locking on the gun pointed at her from the opposite side of the foyer. Sheer panic pressed against her chest, and she sucked in a deep breath.
The guy cleared his throat. “I’m not gonna hurt you.” He cautiously lowered the gun, but didn’t holster it. “Unless you spray that crap again.” He blinked rapidly and ran a hand up over the top of his head, sweeping back a clump of wet hair. Her aim had obviously been off. It was impossible to spray straight when her body was shaking uncontrollably.
The guy’s dark hair was just shy of touching his shoulders and he had a five o’clock shadow. A black T-shirt covered his broad chest and faded, relaxed fitting jeans contradicted his rigid stance. A scar across his cheekbone, and a thin one slashing his eyebrow, added to his don’t mess with me look.
“I’m Ethan Ryder with the U.S. Marshals.” The man flashed a badge, then slipped it back in his pants’ pocket.
If the mob had hunted down her dad, who was to say it hadn’t been through a U.S. Marshal snitch? He’d trusted Roy Howard, not Ethan Ryder. Maybe he wasn’t even with the U.S. Marshals. Rather coincidental that he showed up right after a robbery.
“I assume you’re Olivia Doyle?”
At the back of her mind she heard her dad’s voice. Don’t trust him, Livvy. Be leery of people you know and certainly don’t trust someone you don’t know.

The journey from fourth grade script writer to published author wasn’t an easy one, but it was always an adventure and the final destination was well worth it.
When Eliza isn’t traveling for her job as an event planner, or tracing her ancestry roots through Ireland, she’s at home in Milwaukee working on her next novel, bouncing ideas off her husband Mark, and her cats Quigley, Frankie, and Sammy.
