Pulled Jackfruit Tacos
Pulled Jackfruit Tacos
By Bianca Haun and Sascha Naderer
Makes: 8 tacos | Time: 30 min
If you’re missing pulled pork tacos in your life, you’ll love these pulled jackfruit tacos that we’ve smothered in deliciously decadent BBQ sauce. It’s not always easy to track down canned unripe jackfruit in brine or water, but Asian markets usually have these in stock.
Ingredients for pulled jackfruit
1 teaspoon olive oil
20 oz. (480g) canned unripe jackfruit in brine or water (drained weight: 10 oz. /280 g)
½ teaspoon salt
1⁄8 teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon paprika powder
¼ cup (60 ml) water
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1⁄3 cup (70 g) BBQ sauce
Additional ingredients
8 hard shell tacos*
2 cups (85 g) leafy salad
½ cup (30 g) shredded purple cabbage
2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
Instructions
Add the olive oil to a pan. Drain and rinse the jackfruit, remove the core of the jackfruit (the harder triangular piece) for a better texture, and add the jackfruit to the pan. Pan-fry it for about 4 minutes, then add the salt, garlic power, paprika powder, water, and tomato paste and mix. Let the pulled jackfruit simmer with the lid off for 15 minutes until the water has been absorbed.
Use two forks to shred the jackfruit and to create the typical “pulled” look.
Pour in the BBQ sauce, give it a good mix, and add additional spices to taste. Let it cook for another minute.
To assemble
Add a leafy salad, shredded purple cabbage, and pulled jackfruit onto each hard-shell taco and sprinkle with chopped cilantro.
*A simple trick to make your own hard shell tacos if you only have soft tortillas at home is to fold the soft tortillas over your oven rack and let them bake for 5 to 8 minutes at 350°F/180°C. They should be nice and crispy!

The End of Meat is Coming
Director of the new documentary The End of Meat is sharing below the story behind his drive to the film. I haven’t seen it yet but am looking forward to checking it out! Let me know if you saw it in the comments below! Thanks for sharing Marc.
The End of Meat is Coming
By Marc Pierschel
In the summer of 2013 I visited a factory farm for the first time, accompanying a group of activists during the production of my film Live and Let Live. I knew what to expect based on what I’d seen on TV and YouTube, but entering the premises literally took my breath away. Although this was a so-called “humane” farm, where the animals could move about freely, the smell of ammonia was so strong that my eyes teared up. Smelling, hearing and seeing three thousand suffering birds — some of them injured or ill or even dead — cramped together in a windowless shed was a grueling experience.
Just a few hours later I was in the back of a car with six rescued hens in cardboard boxes. Our next stop was an animal sanctuary, where the half-dozen lucky ones would be able to live out their lives in peace, free from harm alongside other innocent individuals rescued from the animal agriculture industry. It felt good to know we had saved six sentient beings, but I felt such despair for the thousands we left behind. Their existence was sheer misery and they would be killed after their egg-laying cycle ended, when their production dropped off and they became unprofitable and burdensome to the bottom line.
At that moment, late at night somewhere along a German highway, I asked myself if there could ever be a world where factory farms and slaughterhouses would be known only as the ruins of humanity’s dark past. This question never left my head, and four years later I finished my film The End of Meat, which explores this theory of what the world might look like if we stopped exploiting animals for meat and other animal products.
Making this movie took me to seven different countries where I spoke with philosophers, scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and activists all working towards this idyllic vision. I met Esther the Wonder Pig; talked to pioneers leading the vegan movement in Germany; visited the first fully vegetarian city in India; witnessed rescued farm animals enjoying their newfound freedom; and observed future food innovators making meat and cheese without the animals. The result is a documentary that proves a more compassionate world is not only possible, but also imperative — to save the animals, the environment and, ultimately, ourselves.
Marc Pierschel is an award-winning filmmaker and author focused on the human-animal relationship. His films include 184, Live and Let Live and The End of Meat.

VeggieHappy: Your go-to guide for plant-based options in sports venues
Johanna is a writer, actor, and entrepreneur – she was able to successfully introduce veggie dogs at 28 out of 30 MLB parks! How cool is that? I’m thrilled to have her here today to share more about this big endeavor. If you’re going to a sports event and your curious about dining, you need to check out her VeggieHappy listing resource!
VeggieHappy: Your go-to guide for plant-based food options in sports venues
By Johanna McCloy
Sports and entertainment venues have come a long way since 2001 when I launched a campaign to get veggie dogs into Major League Baseball stadiums. (Thank you Alicia for your support and endorsement!) When I started that campaign, it was difficult to find any vegetarian options in ballparks other than peanuts or Cracker Jacks. I’m happy to say that times have changed!
Sports stadiums across the country are incorporating more and more plant-based food options into their concessions. The audience and demand for these healthier, more planet-friendly choices are growing and the future for vegans is bright!
In June, I co-founded VeggieHappy with my friend and partner, Chris Ardito, a marketing and branding executive who shares my passion and entrepreneurial drive. Together we built the first comprehensive online guide featuring listings of the plant-based food items offered at large sports venues –and where to find them. The guide covers all sporting leagues and features venues throughout the U.S. and Canada.
These Tempeh Vegan Nachos (with dairy-free cheese and guacamole) were recently introduced at Dodger Stadium during the World Series.
VeggieHappy is not only helping fans to easily find the plant-based foods they want, we’re also partnering with sports venues to help introduce and highlight tantalizing vegan options on their menu. Likewise, we’re helping these venues to capture a growing flexitarian and vegan fan base.
In addition to our listings, VeggieHappy hosts a blog featuring interesting profiles, articles, and interviews.
There’s more exciting news on the horizon, and we look forward to making those announcements soon! Please join the VeggieHappy team on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and subscribe to receive our blog posts and occasional updates!

Superhero Travel Tips
Whenever I’m headed on a trip, I make sure to crosscheck this list to ensure a healthy and vibrant adventure!
Does the hotel or rental have a kitchen? If so, sometimes I bring a little miso, ume plum vinegar, and flax oil with me so I don’t have to buy a big amount when I reach my destination.
Snacks for the car/plane, usual suspects include: Savory tofu by Wildwood, carrots and hummus, Sconage bars, Luna Bars (peanut butter chocolate chip + apple pie), brown rice cakes with fresh peanut butter.
Packed lunch for the plane – sushi and sweet potatoes are great for travel!
Reusable utensils for eating on the go.
mykind Organics B12 spray, Vitamin C spray, and Elderberry Gummies for extra immune support (and deliciousness).
Reusable water bottle for airport and being on the road.
Garden Apothecary Toning Mist or Tammy Fender Roman Chamomile Tonic for a hydrating facial spritz
Reusable travel-size containers for shampoo, conditioner, and soap. This way, I don’t waste the single use amenities at the hotel or on the airplane.
Sunscreen (depending on the destination)
HappyCow app downloaded and ready to go for finding veg options
What are your travel bag essentials when you hit the road?

Three Small Changes That Can Make a Big Difference for Animals
By Stephanie Feldstein
Everything we do has an impact on animals, from what we put on our plates at each meal to how we celebrate holidays. There are endless opportunities to make choices that are better for animals, the planet, and our own well-being. It can be overwhelming to try to do it all, so here are three small changes that can make a big difference for animals:
1) Choose more plant-based foods.
Animal agriculture isn’t just cruel to the animals in factory farms, it’s also devastating for wild animals. By eating less meat and dairy and choosing plant-based options instead, you’re helping countless animals – from chickens, cows, and pigs to wolves, salamanders, and even butterflies.
If you’re already vegan, help your friends enjoy animal-friendlier foods by inviting them over for dinner, taking them to your favorite plant-based restaurant, and sharing your favorite cruelty-free snack recommendations.
2) Buy less.
Everything we purchase comes with a cost beyond the price tag. Products – even ones made from organic or recycled materials – require energy to manufacture and natural resources that we need to share with wildlife. Plus, there’s the waste of packaging and pollution in wild habitats.
So before you buy something new, ask yourself if you really need it. If the answer is yes, consider whether it’s something that could be bought used or if there’s a version you can invest in that will last longer and have less of an impact on the environment.
3) Give the gift of experiences.
It’s often hard to find the perfect present. In most cases, it’s hard to know if it’s something the person will really use, or even like. And, while thoughtful in the moment, stuff has a way of accumulating, being forgotten, and eventually being tossed. That’s no gift to wildlife. By giving experiences, you can create lasting memories.
Your non-material gift can even do double-duty for animals – in addition to saving natural resources, you can share an animal-friendly experience, such as a homemade vegan meal or a hike in your favorite wilderness area.
Living an animal-friendly lifestyle doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, it’s often about simplifying our choices to leave a lighter footprint and leave more space and resources for animals.
Stephanie Feldstein is the Director of the Population and Sustainability program at the Center for Biological Diversity. She recently authored The Animal Lover’s Guide to Changing the World, an inspiring, accessible, and empowering book for everyone who loves animals and wants to live a more animal-friendly life, even if they aren’t ready to join a movement or give up bacon. She has more than 20 years of experience in animal rescue and advocacy. When she’s not advocating for animals or the future of our planet, she can usually be found working on her next book in the company of assorted rescued dogs and cats.
