Vegan Hero & Rock Star – Tony Kanal!

I hung out with Tony this past spring when I held an event for Loraine Lundquist, Los Angeles City Council candidate (earth activist and vegan!). Tony is a talented Grammy Award-winning musician who plays bass in No Doubt and DREAMCAR. He is also an intelligent and passionate activist! He supports a wide range of powerful nonprofits and is a co-founder of the Circle V vegan music festival. If you scroll through Tony’s social media, you’ll see him marching at animal rights protests with his family, loving up on animals at various sanctuaries, and rocking out on stage. Tony – you are stellar! Thank you for all that you do and letting me interview you!

How long have you been vegan?

I celebrated my seven year vegan anniversary on May the 4th, 2019.

Why did you make the change?

My final move from vegetarianism to veganism came when my wife and I had our first child and my eyes were finally opened to the cruelty of the dairy industry. One glaring fact that I had somehow made myself oblivious to for so much of my life was that for a cow to produce milk she has to be pregnant. So, we forcibly impregnate these moms against their will. Then, after they have gestated for the same amount of time as my wife did for our kids, we steal their baby away so we can consume the lactating fluid that was intended for their babies. Not only do these mothers have to bear the physical pain of being physically exploited for their entire lives but they also have to endure the emotional heartbreak of losing their children over and over. This cycle continues for five years or so before they are unceremoniously killed. I cannot fathom the pain of someone taking my child away. In turn I no longer wanted to contribute to an industry that does that very thing innumerable times a day.

Following the shift, did you notice impacts it immediately had on you?

The biggest impact that going vegan had on me was that I was no longer living in a gray area in which I was still contributing to the exploitation of some animals. Now my actions are aligned with my values. And of course I can take comfort in the fact that living vegan is our best bet for fighting climate change, taking care of our own bodies, working towards the elimination of global hunger, just to name a few benefits.

How has your family, friends, and co-workers responded to your diet and health changes?

At the time of going vegan, most of my close family and friends were supportive and even took steps towards becoming vegan or went vegan themselves. In the seven plus years since then, some of those that maybe weren’t open to the idea have come around, especially in light of the exponential growth, convenience and availability of vegan options in everyday life, as well as the long overdue coverage by many media outlets on how animal agriculture is a massive contributor to our climate crisis.

When your diet comes up in conversation with non-veggie friends, do you have a favored elevator pitch to encourage them to eat more plants? If so, what is it?

I’m vegan for the animals so that is where my passion comes from when I speak about veganism. Animals deserve to live free from harm, domination and oppression just as we do. Their lives mean as much to them as our lives mean to us. Veganism is a way to stand against injustice and violence and to promote love, compassion and empathy.

What is a typical?

Breakfast: avocado toast and coffee

Lunch: burrito or veggie burger

Dinner: tacos or sushi or a protein bowl

Snack: cheese & crackers, chips and dip

What are some of your favorite spots to dine at (in whichever city you spend the most time)?

Crossroads Kitchen in West Hollywood has been my hangout since it opened back in 2013. I could eat there every night. We also love going to Little Pine in Silver Lake, the food is great. Other favorites are Shojin and Au Lac, both in Downtown Los Angeles, and Veggie Grill in Hollywood. A new go-to is Plant Power in Long Beach.

Do you have a favorite book or film that you like to share with friends who are vegan-curious?

Some movies that I recommend starting with are Cowspiracy, What The Health, Blackfish, The Cove, and The Game Changers.

What non-profit organizations are you energized and inspired by?

Some of the many organizations that are doing great work…

Animal Place

Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest

The Save Movement

Vital Actions

Arame, Sun-Dried Tomato, and Zucchini Stir Fry

This is a super-yummy way to sneak sea veggies into your life. I promise if you like sun-dried tomatoes and basil and zucchini, then you will love this dish! Arame is a species of kelp that’s packed with calcium, iron, vitamin A, and loads of minerals. These gems from the sea have a slightly nutty, sweet flavor and give depth and heartiness to a simple veggie stir-fry. This dish is delicious with or without tofu, so you could have it as the main event or as a great veggie side to complement another protein. It’s the arame you’re after, so you only need 1/2 to 1 cup on your plate to keep your meal balanced. This recipe will last you a few days!

Ingredients

1 pound firm tofu, drained and cut into 1/2” cubes
3 tablespoons tamari + more to taste
1 cup loosely packed arame
1 cup boiling water
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 large cloves garlic, minced
1 pound zucchini, sliced into 1/4” half-moons (about 3.25 cups)
1/3 cup finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes
1/4 cup fresh basil, minced

Marinate the tofu by placing it in a shallow dish or container with the 3 tablespoons tamari and letting it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. If you have a tight fitting lid, cover the dish. Shake occasionally or simply turn the tofu.

Put the arame in a bowl and cover it with the boiling water. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then strain out the arame and reserve the soaking water. Set aside.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the tofu and marinade plus the arame and cook for another minute. Stir in the zucchini and 2 tablespoons of the arame soaking water. Cover and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and additional tamari to taste and cook for another minute. Take off the heat and fold in the basil. Serve hot or at room temperature!

Save an Animal’s Life, Be Prepared for Disaster

Fall is here and I can’t help but reflect on the last year’s wildfires here in SoCal. A study published this summer in the journal Earth’s Future states that human-caused climate change has significantly enhanced California’s wildfires.  In fact, California’s wildfires are now 500 percent larger due to climate change… It’s extremely terrifying.

You may have seen the heartbreaking photos from California’s 2018 wildfires, if you haven’t already they’re hard to swallow but it’s the reality of what can happen to our furry friends when disaster strikes. It’s so devastating to think about these scenarios.. but it’s absolutely best to be prepared. Here’s what CAL Fire recommends:

Plan ahead. Know where you will take or leave your pets. In case you are not home when disaster strikes, arrange in advance for a neighbor to check on or transport your pets. Make sure your neighbors have your contact numbers (cell phone, work, home, etc.). In the event of evacuation pets may not be allowed inside human emergency shelters – have an alternate prearranged location to take your animals.
Make sure your pets are always wearing properly fitted collars with personal identification, rabies and license tags.
Each animal should have it’s own pet carrier. Birds, rodents and reptiles should be transported in cages. Cover cages with a light sheet or cloth to minimize their fear.
Store medical records, veterinary contact information, proof of owner- ship, a current photo, and a Disaster Preparedness Kit in one location.

Companion Animal Disaster Preparedness Kit

Carrier for each animal
Two week supply of food and water
Non-spill food and water bowls
First-aid kit
Potential medications and dosing instructions
Car litter box and litter (if applicable)
Bags for waste disposal
Paper towels
Leashes/collars/harnesses
Blankets
Toys and treats

One thing not mentioned above is the new app, Evac-U-Pet.  Evac-U-Pet is a free app that answers the challenge of emergency animal evacuation by linking animals in need with the volunteers and transport to haul them to safety, providing automatic connections and routing in real time. In the agonizing instance that you are not able to go home, or you have to evacuate asap but may not have the ability to immediately grab your furry family member..  Maybe the companion animal is outside and out of sight, or he/she panicked and already ran off… Evac-U-Pet can be a life saver.

Here’s how it works:

During the Sand Fire in Los Angeles County in 2016, Evac-U-Pet co-founders Morgan Walston and Amanda Baudo were doing everything they could to help evacuate animals: Morgan was utilized her truck and horse trailer while Amanda, investigated various Facebook groups and pages to locate animals in need. Social media is no doubt useful to call for help and share quick updates, but it can also get messy with so much going on in a newsfeed. Morgan and Amanda knew there had to be a better, more efficient way to help animals evacuate and get them out of harms way. It was from this that Evac-U-Pet was born.

Evac-U-Pet recently launched in Los Angeles County and plans to go nationwide. The app is designed so that pet owners can create a profile for themselves and their animals (name/location/image), as well as register to volunteer, transport, or house animals during emergencies. In an emergency situation, the app will contact both animal owners within the emergency area, as well as volunteers within the transport radius. The app will ask if an owner’s animals need evacuation, and if a volunteer is able to assist. The app automatically pairs a volunteer with animals they are equipped to evacuate, taking into consideration transportation abilities  and the radius they can travel. Routing information from the volunteer’s location to the location of the animals is downloaded directly to the volunteer’s phone, so in the case of loss of signal, all of the information is still available. Routing information is updated in real time with road closures.

Animal owners can track their pets’ location from their end of the app while the animals are in transit to make sure they go where they are supposed go.

Be prepared and increase your loved ones safety. Review the tips above and register your furry friend today on Evac-U-Pet. No companion animal but love animals?? Sign up as a volunteer and be a rescue angel! Evac-U-Pet is available in the Apple and Android stores and it’s completely free.

Baked Peaches with Gooey Peach Nut Crumble

There is nothing like peaches that have been caramelizing in their own juices, then topped with what is basically the best granola ever. I could probably eat the whole tray in one sitting..!

My go-to sweetener is brown rice syrup since it’s not as taxing on the system! It’s my favorite sweetener in terms of how it makes me feel, sweet and loyal! It brings the blood sugar up, without sending it crashing down. It’s made from brown rice cooked with special enzymes until it breaks down into a liquid. Because it’s made up of more complex carbs, brown rice syrup delivers a mellow, gentle, yet sweet taste.

Makes 2 to 4 servings

Ingredients

2 peaches, cut into roughly 1” cubes (as best you can)
1.5 tablespoons brown rice syrup
.5 cup rolled oats
.25 cup almonds, chopped
.25 cup walnuts, chopped
1 tablespoon black sesame seeds
.25 cup raisins

Preheat the oven to 350°F

Arrange the peaches in a small baking dish. Set aside.

Add the syrup to a small saucepan with 1/2 to 2/3 cup water and bring to a boil. Add the oats.

Stir and cook for about 1 minute, or until well combined and the water is absorbed. Add the nuts, seeds, and raisins and stir to combine. Pour over the peaches and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until slightly browned and bubbling.

Serve warm!

Surgeon Dr. Natuzzi Embraces Veganism

I am so excited to share this Q&A with you all! Dr. Eileen Natuzzi (on the right in the photo above) was my mom’s surgeon. Dr. Natuzzi is so special to me because of all the attention and thought she put into everything concerning my mom and our family. I felt so safe with her, she was a rock for me during this time. There were so many doctors I dealt with while my mom was in the hospital, and not all are created equal! Dr. Natuzzi made herself so generously available to us and is just an all around cool person! Bear and I really enjoyed spending time with her and meeting her awesome partner Lynne.

Towards the end of my mom’s hospital stay, I gave her my book The Kind Diet and some mykind Organics vitamins. I wasn’t sure if she’d actually read The Kind Diet, but she did and it turned her into a flirt! Now she has nearly one full year of plant-based eating under her belt! Dr. Natuzzi, thank you for letting me interview you and for all that you do!

How long have you been vegan?

I have been a vegan for just under one year.

Why did you make the change?

I went “cold turkey” in adopting a vegan diet while I was taking care of my mother who had end stage dementia, and working as a trauma and acute care surgeon. It was a demanding and emotionally exhausting time for me and I wanted to move into a more healthful diet. Meeting Alicia Silverstone and talking with her about her vegan diet and lifestyle certainly helped me make those changes. Transitioning to a plant-based diet was a logical progression for me as I had been limiting my intake of meat and other unhealthy foods for years. As a “foodie” and the chief cook in our house it was a challenge to learn where to find and how to use a whole lot of new foods.

Following the shift, did you notice impacts it immediately had on you?

Shifting my diet while traveling to work as well as traveling to care for my mother was a challenge but I felt a great deal less encumbered and no longer weighed down by a diet high in fats. The post meal sluggishness was gone. While working doing trauma surgery it is not uncommon for me to be up all night operating and treating injured people. I found my energy levels were greater with my vegan diet allowing me to keep up with the younger trauma surgeons I work with. I am far from perfect in my vegan discipline. I do slip occasionally and eat cheese. Currently I am adjusting foods to optimize essential nutrients and avoid excess caloric intake.

How has your family, friends, and co-workers responded to your diet and health changes?

My spouse has been very supportive and while she is still a meat-eater, she will eat vegan dishes that I prepare for her. If a meal passes the “Lynne test” then I know it’s a good one. She has given me vegan cook books as gifts and together we loaded up our garden this year with all kinds of good stuff. My siblings and in laws are not judgmental and are in fact curious about making the shift to a new way of cooking and eating. When we get together they make sure there is a non-meat, non-dairy option for me and I in turn introduce them to new foods. For friends and family who are not vegan and ask about it I am happy to tell them the health benefits of a plant-based diet. I also advise friends, family and patients if you can’t go total vegan then at least try to “drop the flesh from your diet.”

When your diet comes up in conversation with non-veggie friends, do you have a favored elevator pitch to encourage them to eat more plants? If so, what is it?

Here is the pitch I give: “Do you know that eating flesh and dairy products comes with a number of negative health impacts especially cancer, heart disease and stroke? Studies clearly show that a plant-based diet is a healthier one and transitioning to it can halt and even reverse some of the physical damage a poor diet has caused. Cultures that eat a plant-based diet have been shown to have lower rates of cancers and heart disease when compared with western diets. And while we cannot change our genetic predisposition toward diseases we can change what we bath those genes in by consuming a healthier diet. Consider going vegan for all the reasons out there: your health, to stop abusing animals, and to be mindful of our fragile environment. But put your health first and in doing that all the other reasons to be a vegan become co-benefits. You can choose to be an activist, or passivist, but consider making the change for your health.

In addition to my mini lecture I also invite my non-vegetarian friends out to a vegan restaurant. I have noticed some of my friends are concerned that vegan food will be boring. I tell them it is anything but boring! Dining at a restaurant is a great way to convince friends about the good taste because they get to sample a number of different dishes.

What is a typical?

Breakfast: Oats and fruit with almond milk / tofu scramble with red and green bell pepper and smoked tempeh

Lunch: Whole wheat pita bread pocket with avocado, cucumber and tomato / a spicy asian vegetable soup loaded with carrots, bok choy, kale, shitake mushrooms, tofu and wheat soba noodles / radicchio whole wheat pizza

Dinner: Stir fried vegetables with brown rice or farro / Moroccan Couscous with saffron and Turkish spices / roasted vegetable with a mushroom burger drizzled with a tahini cheese

Snack: usually fruit but on occasion I will treat myself to Nada Moo ice cream / chips or carrots with a fresh cilantro lime garlic cashew dip

**One very important addition to my vegan diet is taking supplements daily, especially B12, plant-based iron and Vitamin C. Supplements are very important in order to avoid vitamin deficiencies.

What are some of your favorite spots to dine at (in whichever city you spend the most time)?

Where do I start?

In Encinitas (home) I like the restaurant EVE. The food is fun, fresh and healthy. It is my favorite place to take vegan curious friends. And it has passed the “Lynne test.”

Also in Encinitas is a great healthy Filipino restaurant, CARiN de RiA. They have a really delicious Sizzling tofu sisig and a vegetable coconut stew (Ginataan).

In downtown San Diego I like Donna Jean a plant-based restaurant where the Midwest meets California without a cow in sight.

In Sonoma (my second home) the restaurant Star in Glen Ellen is terrific. They have fire roasted vegetable dishes with great sauces.

In Bakersfield (when I am able to get out of the hospital) I go to Café Smitten for a wake up breakfast because their almond milk lattes and vegan breakfast burritos are so tasty. For a cool treat on one of the many over 100 degree days in Bakersfield, I get a vegan ice cream at Rosemary’s Family Creamery.

Do you have a favorite book or film that you like to share with friends who are vegan-curious?

My daily go to bible is The Kind Diet. I have a hard copy in the kitchen and a digital copy on my phone for quick reference in the store.

There is a video that Dr. Brian Pazevic, one of the anesthesiologist I work with, produced titled “Longevity Macro to Microbiome.” It is a comprehensive, evidence based discussion about the health benefits of a plant-based diet. Here is the link: https://youtu.be/BUf9VxN2FMg

What non-profit organizations are you energized and inspired by?

I support the Climate Reality Project and am a member of the US Climate Health Alliance.

Another new non-profit I support is the FAXY fund established in memory of a friend who recently passed away. FAXY fund supports animal rescues and scholarships for high school students who have special education challenges.

About Eileen Natuzzi

I am the second of 5 children in an Irish Italian family. I am the only doctor where most of my family are teachers and I work as a General and Trauma Surgeon in San Diego and Bakersfield, California. For the first 15 years of my career, my practice focused on treating vascular disease where I saw first hand the cumulative vascular damage that results from our animal fat diets and unhealthy choices. I recently obtained a Master in Public Health in order to become more involved in a preventive approach toward health.

In my spare time I enjoy gardening, writing and walking as an exercise. I confess I am an avid gamer, as a way to keep my laparoscopic dexterity skills up and to have fun. I love a challenge so switching to cooking and preparing a vegan diet has introduced me to new foods, new techniques and new places to shop.

Kind Spotlight: Marc Ching

This past year I’ve gotten the privilege of befriending Marc Ching, animal activist extraordinaire. Most recently, we lobbied in Sacramento together for AB 479 to get more plant-based options in California’s schools.  Hanging out with Marc gives you a real charge. He is an unbelievable man, a passionate self-starter that’s incredibly brilliant… So I need to tell you about him!

Marc is a father, 4th Generation Japanese Herbalist and Human Holistic Nutritionist, the owner of Petstaurant, and founder of Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation. Animal Hope and Wellness is a non-profit devoted to compassion, education, and legislation to guide hearts and minds towards a brighter future for animals. A main facet to their work is the rescue and rehabilitation of dogs abused, often at the hands of the Asian dog meat trade.

30 million dogs are slaughtered every year across Asia, with an estimated 10 million per year in China alone. A significant portion of these animals are brutally tortured — often burned and boiled alive prior to death — a practice attributable to the unfounded belief that tortured dog meat tastes better and provides enhanced health benefits. It’s horrific. After Marc became aware of this terrifying industry, he decided to travel across China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, South Korea, and Indonesia to document and expose it’s insane cruelty. Sometimes he would go undercover as an American buyer so he could “buy” and free as many animals as possible. Other times he would negotiate their release. This work is no joke. Marc has been harassed, beaten, and shot. To go undercover or rock the boat is any way is an incredibly dangerous endeavor.

Marc and Animal Hope and Wellness have helped rescue thousands of dogs from this madness. They opened a rescue shelter in Changsha, China to provide a safe place and carry out any medical needs. Rescued dogs live here until they are transported to either Sherman Oaks, CA or another vetted rescue where they are put up for adoption to find their forever homes.

I’m blown away and greatly inspired by his courage and compassion. Thank you Marc for all that you do!

You can stay up to date with Marc and Animal Hope and Wellness’s powerful work via social media.

Kind Lifer Cara’s Health Journey

Cara wrote to me about her kind life journey and it inspired me so much! Plus, mykind Organics vits boosted her health to the next level.. amazing! Thank you Cara for sharing this with me!

My plant-based journey began with my husband, two very close friends and myself engulfed in documentaries about global warming, animal cruelty and industrialized farming. The overwhelming knowledge shook us all to our core.

4 years later, we are raising 4 fully vegan children. This journey has made me more aware of how important a whole food, plant based diet is to a thriving life. I turned to YouTube for inspiration and education on how to navigate a vegan lifestyle with children. Alicia was on a video of another YouTuber I was watching. She was talking about her vitamins and how sustainably sourced they are. I was skeptical at first but ordered three to try. The B12, vitamins C and D sprays.

I’ve struggled with mild anxiety and depression my entire life. I’ve tried medications but nothing made me feel “better”.  Some even made me feel much worse. I decided years ago to just deal with it on my own.  I noticed a change in my mood when I would eat whole plant foods, after researching natural ways to overcome anxiety and depression. When I added the vitamin sprays it was a total game changer! I’ve never felt better in my life! I feel as if I’ve been let out of jail. I can finally live my life out of the darkness.

My anxiety and depression still exist but I now know how to fight back. All thanks to Alicia and The Kind Life .
