The Sigh of Relief

It is over. It was a success and a relief, but its over. My gratitude goes out to all those who came and showed their support. Some of you drove great distances to be there and I'll never be able to thank you enough. I love you people. I really do. I hope you know that.

Now, can I just tell you how I truly feel about Release Parties?

Imagine you've been dared to belly flop off the high dive. You're gonna do it. You've been dared. And you've probably got an idea of how to do it so you don't end up with your innards in your armpits, but you're a little unsure of what the outcome will be. You're excited, probably a little bit because of the pressure. Will it be a rush? I'm sure. Will you feel pain? I mean, come on. It's a belly flop. Saying it out loud hurts my belly and I've got a healthy one... robust. Will people cheer? Ye...ah. But aren't they really just making fun of you? Or applauding and doing that whole... covering their mouth and speaking in a high-pitched sympathetic voice, because they think you'll hear them better through the pain. And what if you lose your trunks? That's a definite fear. Or you slip on the diving board and you plummet sideways with your neck exposed. Water can feel like rock from that high up. That's no joke. What if no one watches? And you wake up in the middle of receiving some CPR from a lifeguard (male or female, it doesn't matter at this point. Okay, it does matter, but, you catch my drift.)

Book Release Parties are kinda like that. Now, before there's an uproar, let me doctor this post up a bit. I had a lot of supportive friends and family and fans (yes, I may have a few) show up and hang out at this party. It was great to see everybody. Some of you I haven't seen in a while. It was more than I could have hoped for. I felt loved. Appreciated. Even, dare I say, respected. It was great. I went home last night and thought, man, I have some amazing friends. We sold books. There was excitement. I didn't feel like a loser and by most standards, it was a huge success.

But still. Belly Flop. I'm talking about the preparation you have to go through. The wondering if this will be the event where NO ONE shows up. Or what if someone shows up who hates my books and thinks I'm a worthless author. And what if that person has a voice capable of convincing others and instead of buying books, people are tossing them in my face? Extreme? Okay. A little. But as an author, and let me correct that. As a rookie author, which I am, you wonder these things. Because you're not just selling books, (CORN WARNING) you're selling a part of your soul. Hey, you were warned. You really have to sell yourself. I am by no means looking for pity, but I'm not an easy sell. I have gout, people. As in Looney Toons hit with a hammer on your big toe and now it's the size of a plum, gout. I have skyscraper-like cholesterol. I have bad hair. I sleep-terrorize. I get weird hairs growing out of the tops of my ears. The tops! Like... I don't know how to put this... the top. Everyone gets hair on the inside of their ears, but do you get it on the top? I don't know how to leave messages on phones. At all. I can't write a check. Banks scare me.

What am I talking about?

I ramble.

Anyways. The point is, if I have one, it is hard selling yourself to prospective readers. It's a full-time job. Constantly posting, and tweeting, and blogging about yourself and your books. I think I'm a pretty decent writer. I think my stories can definitely entertain and I feel if readers give them a chance, they'll more often than not enjoy reading them. And I love my readers. I love talking to them about books and answering questions. I love making them laugh. I love doing school visits and hearing the cheers and seeing the kids just light up because there's an adult dancing around in front of them like an idiot and letting them know it's okay to be goofy and be different. (I don't only do that, I also teach.) My readers are my friends. For sure. That's one of the greatest perks of being a writer is meeting the readers. But trying to find new readers boots me out of my comfort zone. Way out. Like in belly flop zone. Sometimes you feel like you have to almost beg people to stop at your table and then you wonder... did they just buy my book because I begged? And the answer is almost always yes.

Book signings are tough. And a Book Release Party is like the ultimate book signing. There was a moment last night, right before I wandered into the store to sit at the table and greet my friends, where I almost puked. For those that know me, know I'm pretty comfortable in social atmospheres. I like being around people and having conversation. I actually don't mind being the center of attention from time to time. But this is different. This is putting it all out there and hoping people have the time to humor you for an hour or two. So, again, I am so glad everyone came out and shared the love, but I am so glad it's over.

There. I said it. I hope no one feels I'm ungrateful, because that's not the case. Will I do another Release Party? Yep. I have to. Will I expect you to come. Yep. You bet. Will I almost puke before the next one? Uh... do belly flops every stop hurting?

Now, here are a couple of pics from last night's release party.
The Set-Up. Holy Cow! Pretty amazing! I felt like a rock star

You can't see it in this picture. But I have gout.

We had a little bit of a line. Not too shabby.

What is Gout?

Weird way to start a post? I agree. But there's something wrong with my big toe. I'm thinking gout, but I'll keep you posted (whether you like it or not.) In other news, I just submitted Hashbrown Winters and the Whiz-tastrophe to my publisher. For those that gave their advice, I thank you. I took it and made a slight change. And I picked a winner. There were 4 of you in the running (good odds!) And...

Ta-da!

Krista Rogers has won!

Krista actually played via Goodreads and has earned a smashing copy of The Beyonders by Brandon Mull (signed even!)

I just realized I've used parentheses about a million times in this post, so I won't do it again,)

And in other news...

Did you know my Release Party takes place one week from today? You didn't? For shame!

Tuesday, June 12th @ 6:00 pm
Deseret Book
1110 E. Fort Union Blvd.
Midvale, UT 84047

There might even be (a) balloon. And if you come, there will be plenty more of this...

Okay. I promise. I'll never do that again.

Hashbrown 4 needs a title

I've finished the draft of Hashbrown 4, went through a round of edits, and now I'm just waiting for a little feedback from a reader or two on any areas I need to fix. And, of course, I need a title. I don't know why this part of the writing process is so difficult for me. I know authors who have a title first before they even write a sentence.

Is a title important? I really think so. It will forever label my book on the cover.

So, I need some help and I'm willing to reward you for it. Here I go again. Putting up a contest which could backfire and make me look like a total winner (said with a sarcastic voice). But I have no choice. I have a title in mind, but I'd like your feedback. I should also add my publisher may want me to change it to something else entirely, but I want to have a working title for when I submit it in a week or two.

Here's what Hashbrown 4 is all about in a nutshell.

Hashbrown Winters retires from playing marbles and enters the exciting world of Laser Tag. In order to defeat his new nemesis, Melanie Thumbs, for the championship, Hashbrown has to resort to extreme measures and recruits Whiz Peterson to play in the match. Whiz, as you should know by now, has a bit of a bladder problem and doesn't do well with electronic equipment. Letting him play is a bold risk, but one Hashbrown's willing to take. Besides, what's the worst thing that could happen? But when disaster strikes during the championship and Whiz actually vanishes, Hashbrown embarks on his most bizarre adventure yet. With his best friends at his side, Hashbrown travels into the unknown to save Whiz from an entirely new band of misfits... from another dimension.

There it is. Schmwa! (the sound of me kissing my fingers). This book is by far my finest piece of Hashbrown lore and I can't wait for you to read it. But what the heck am I gonna call it?

Here's what I have:

Hashbrown Winters and the Whizzing Whiz-tastrophe

I like it... But do you like it.

Here's how the contest works:

Comment that you like the title and you get an entry
Comment that you don't like the title and you get an entry
Comment with another title that I may use and you get an entry

I'll let this contest run until next Sunday. At that point I'll pick a winner who will win a signed copy of Beyonders by Brandon Mull.

Book Trailer for The Guardians of Elijah's Fire

Yes, I'm no videographer. Holy cow! That's a real word. I totally thought there would be red squiggly lines beneath that once I wrote it. I'm word wizard.

Back to what I was saying... I'm no videographer. I don't claim to be, but I'm trying to do all I can to really promote my next book, The Guardians of Elijah's Fire (which by the way, releases on June 12th and I'm having an awesome release party @ Deseret Book, 1110 E. Fort Union Blvd. Midvale, UT starting at 6:00 p.m this book is awesome... Paheeeehew. All in one breath.)

So, I made a book trailer. It's blurry and maybe a bit fast at times, but I did it all on my home computer in less than a day.

To be honest, I don't care if this doesn't ever hit thousands of thousands of views on youtube, but if it could convince one more person (maybe you) to read my series and give it a shot, then it's worth it.

Without further ado....

We Have Some Winners

I think a week or so is a good time frame for a contest. So it ended and we have some winners! First off, I want to thank everyone for participating and not making me look like a total loser. It was fun and I will do more now with this added boost of confidence.

Here are the winners (randomly selected via spreadsheet)

The Advanced Reading Copy of The Guardians of Elijah's Fire goes to... Sheryl Johnson!

The hard copy of The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter goes to... Kristina Caden!

And the poster of The Guardians of Elijah's Fire goes to... Jennifer Dean Brandon!

I'm sending you a message on Facebook right now.

Thanks again to everyone for playing!

The Kickin' Wing Contest

Who cares about contests? Do you? I know I always feel as though I can't win, so what's the point? Well, I have yet to find an answer for that question, but I continue to do contests randomly on this blog. Here's the deal. I have an Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) of my book, The Guardians of Elijah's Fire. It's paperback (the book will be printed in hardcover) and it has a completely different cover (cool as well, but unique.) There are hardly any of these left, so for you collectors out there... Kabajing! You have a chance to collect...it

But the 2nd deal is: I need participation. Do you know how loseriffic one feels when they do a contest to give away something and no one participates? Not a single soul. Meaning, if I give away one prize for participation and all you have to do is show your face and you can see no one else is participating, and yet you still don't play. Free stuff, dudes! Sorry. I had to rant. I know I'm no... James Dashner or Brandon Mull or Harvey Fillibuster. But come on.

K. I'm spreading this contest trans-media. Meaning, across several platforms (blogosphere, Facebook, e-mail, etc.) And I have but one requirement to play. You have to like my author page on Facebook.

That's it to join in on the fun. How tough is that? I know you're thinking... "I don't want to stoop to that level. I don't want to get caught up in Frank L. Cole's propaganda. I don't want people to know I "like" him." Well... Free stuff, dudes! Nuff said.

I have three different pages. One for Guardians, one for Hashbrown, and one for me as an author. And I'm sure some of you (you may remain nameless) have thought why does Frank post the same update on Facebook 4 times? It's obnoxious! Well, it's because I feel like I have to spread the word any way I can. Now, if I had all of my friends, and fans, and what-not on one page, then, wahoo! Problem solved.
Right now, The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter page has 153 "Likes"
Hashbrown Winters page has 472 "Likes"
My Author Page has 163 "Likes"
There are tons of duplicates and it's all really messy. Let's get it to one spot. Capeesh? (I don't know how to spell that.)

Here's the link. Just click and hit the Like button.

https://www.facebook.com/FrankL.Cole

All new "Likers" will be entered into the drawing to win the ARC.

Now, all my faithful fans (the ones who liked me before this contest), don't worry. I'm not forgetting you. All you have to do to enter this contest is to advertise for me. Post about it on Facebook and you get an entry. Post it on your blog... entry. Tweet about it... entry.

And, of course, new fans of the site can advertise as well for additional entries.

How am I going to keep track of all this?

Don't have a clue yet.

Actually, if you just link my name, I'll see it, or comment on my blog, or Facebook, or Twitter, that would work as well.

Oh, and there's more. Don, duh, duh, duuuuuuuh!

I'm giving away more than one prize.

First name drawn will get the ARC of The Guardians of Elijah's Fire. WICKED!
Second name drawn will get a hard copy of The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter. Also WICKED!
Third name drawn will get a signed poster of The Guardians of Elijah's Fire. Koo Koo Kachoooo!

And for your viewing pleasure, I've even posted pictures:

The Guardians of Elijah's Fire (ARC)
The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter A Poster.
What do I really think about all this?

Bonus Points for whoever can tell me where Kickin' Wing comes from.

Cover Reveal for The Guardians of Elijah's Fire

I've been wanting to post this for a long, long time. This has to be my favorite book I've written so far. I know that doesn't mean anything coming from the author, but what if I told you I really meant it? Does that help?

In The Guardians of Elijah's Fire, Amber has become the primary target of an evil organization known only as the Architects. Led by the mysterious Baeloc, a descendant of the original mastermind behind the Tower of Babel, the Architects unleash chaos to locate a weapon capable of calling fire from the heavens. Running out of places to hide and more importantly friends she can trust, Amber, along with her sarcastic pal, Trendon, and her beloved teacher, Dorothy, must venture deep into enemy territory in order to secure the legendary artifact, Elijah's Fire.

Oh snap! Please buy this and read it and cherish it and... you get the idea. I will be forever grateful.

Review of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere

Neverwhere Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

When Richard Mayhew stops one day to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London pavement, his life is forever altered, for he finds himself propelled into an alternative reality that exists in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations. He has fallen through the cracks of reality and has landed somewhere different, somewhere that is Neverwhere.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wow! Really weird and twisted. Definitely not for younger minds, but it does have Gaiman's Coraline'ish feel to it. I love the whole underworld of London and the characters were very well-developed. Makes me wonder if there will be a sequel. Loved the ending! There were times when I did become a little too confused in the middle of the novel and had to step back from the book for a break. The 2 villains, Mr. Vandermar and Mr. Croup, were foul and evil and often had me worried of what terrible things they would do to Richard and Door. Lots of surprises.
