Photo of the Week -- Mad Blue Bird
Since I dabble in amateur photography (really amateur), I've decided to start a new photo of the week blog series. I may share my photos or other photos I find of interest.
Today, I start with my "Mad Blue Bird" photo, taken a few years ago. The expression on this bird's face is priceless. It's like I caught him doing a dirty deed or I was infringing upon his privacy (in my yard, no less)!

B&N Back Cover Blurb:
Cocky Charley Jensen doesn’t mince words. She knows how to handle herself, doesn’t shy away from hard work, loves tinkering with her pickup, and is far more comfortable with a tool belt hanging off her hips than an apron. However, Charley’s a failure at personal relationships, more experienced throwing punches and insults than her arms around someone. She’s way out of her comfort zone when she strays across a clean cut babe, emphasis on babe, stranded in the woods. Her cool and dismissive assessment of Drake Carver is entirely wrong but correcting someone this opinionated isn't easy.
Don’t let this biologist’s Oxford shirt fool you. Drake’s tough, used to roughing it, and not afraid to be tested. He’s just never encountered a women quite like Charley which, in his opinion, makes her ideal for his purposes. As they dance around their obvious attraction and continue to butt heads time is running out. Drake needs to make his proposition before the birds fly. Unfortunately, Charley kicks him out of her bed and her life right when he was about to clinch the deal. And here he thought outrunning a forest fire was going to be the hardest thing he faced this summer.
Sensuality Level: Behind Closed DoorsShow MoreShow Less My Review: Another Fantastic Novel by Tara Mills! The first chapter of FOREST FIRES sucks you in and doesn’t let go. Ms. Mills’ successfully sets up the story from page one when Drake has a flat tire and Charley stumbles across him on the highway. Drake is returning to the small town and cabin where he spent his boyhood summers, the place Charley calls home. Sparks fly and the adventure begins! I got a kick out of the role-reversal with Charley as a handywomen and Drake a scholarly wildlife biologist. It creates great tension between them when Drake needs a helping hand at his rundown cabin. Charley doesn’t trust due to having been burned before in love, and Drake’s all too willing to be the man to help her overcome her distrust. When the two get caught in a suspenseful and gripping escape from a raging forest fire, their relationship starts to sizzle (literally!). Down to the last page, I didn’t know how they would reach their happily ever after when Drake is only in town for the summer. But Ms. Mills’ wraps it up beautifully and the ending was real and satisfying. I loved Tara Mills’ first novel Caution: Filling is Hot and was excited to read FOREST FIRES. Tara Mills has a flare for injecting humor into her stories in just the right places and in the right amounts. I love her writing and story-telling ability, and I highly recommend both books. Tara Mills is now on my instant buy list.

Lyrical Press Excerpt:Alan looked at me and panic flooded his silver blue eyes.“Stanzie.” My name was a horrified plea.
I could see the ghost of a wolf’s muzzle beneath his mouth. He held out a hand and recoiled when he saw the dark fur on his palm.
“Take off your clothes, Alan,” I urged, but he stood there, transfixed. I hastily unbuttoned his plaid shirt and pushed it off his shoulders. “Help me,”I cried as I tugged at his sleeve.
“I don’t know what’s happening to me,” he whispered. His body gave a bone crunching shudder and he stared at Faith and Scott’s wolves, terror etched across his face. The wolves waited together, shoulder to shoulder. It was a damn good thing I hadn’t shifted myself. Poor Alan was clueless.
I fumbled with the button on his fly and then the zipper. His throat rippled and he threw back his head and howled. The noise nearly scared the shit out of me, but I somehow managed to get his zipper down and then I pushed him onto his ass so I could pull his jeans off. He was no help at all, caught in the throes of the first emergence of his wolf. His body morphed in and out of focus. It was like trying to undress someone by strobe light and I had to shut my eyes so I wouldn’t lose my concentration. Alan whimpered and whined. Shifting was painful sometimes--especially when we fought it and he was. He didn’t know how to relax into the chaos and let it flow. He still struggled for control, for a way to reason out the process, and that was impossible. Shifting did not make sense. It just happened.
“Let go. Alan, just go with it,” I coached in a quiet voice as I sat as near as I could to him. He writhed on the pine needles and screamed as his bones shifted beneath his skin. “It hurts less if you just let go.”
“Stanzie!” My name turned into an anguished howl and just when I had begun to get scared, it happened. Alan blinked out of this plane and when he blinked back in, he was shifted.
His wolf was gorgeous. Dusky black with ice-blue eyes. A touch of gray at the tips of each paw. Big too. Bigger than Scott’s gray wolf. He rolled to his feet and sprawled onto his face when he tried to walk. Two legs to four was a bitch for some people. It had never fazed me, but Grey told me it had taken him half an hour to figure out how the hell to walk the first time he’d shifted. I grinned to remember the story and reached out to pat Alan’s wolf on the head. He whined at me.
“Get up and walk. Four legs are fun,” I told him. I was on my hands and knees now, so we could look eye to eye. If he got up, that is. Faith’s wolf pranced over and nudged him with her dainty muzzle. He whined again and she gave a coughing bark. In wolf speak she told him to get off his ass.
Scott’s wolf approached me and stared at me so hard I knew he tried to tell me something, but I couldn’t figure out what. Then it hit me. Duh. I was still in human form.
I stood up so I could strip off my jeans and t-shirt. Scott’s wolf waited impatiently. Alan’s wolf had gained his wobbly feet but seemed stuck in one position. When Faith’s wolf nudged his back end with her nose, he promptly fell over again and I snickered. Alan’s wolf gave me a reproachful look and I patted his head in apology. Scott’s wolf moved behind me and bumped the back of my knees so hard I fell over. Alan’s wolf wheezed with lupine laughter. “At least I can walk on all fours,” I muttered. Naked, I crawled away a few feet to give myself space for shifting. Only nothing happened.
My ReviewAmy Lee Burgess brings the reader into the world of Stanzie’s wolf pack and her childhood home, a place she hasn’t visited in a long time—and for good reason. When I signed on for this tour and offered to do a review, I wasn’t aware that this was Book 4 in an urban fantasy series. Yet, I was able to follow the story well as the author did a great job of sprinkling in just enough intriguing backstory for me to understand Stanzie and her history. After finishing INSIDE OUT, I now want to go back and start reading from the beginning with Book 1. The story was that good!
INSIDE OUT starts with Stanzie’s bond mate Murphy (and Paddy) leaving her after the events of Book 3. She pines for Murphy throughout the rest of the story and her heartache is deeply felt as I delved into what has become of her life. I kept wanting Murphy to come back, and I didn’t really know him that well, but the author’s depiction of him left me wanting to know this man so much more. I’d love to see him come back in Book 5 and the two of them work through their very real issues to an HEA.In this chapter of Stanzie’s life, she’s been called home to investigate some nefarious activity happening in her home pack. She’s an outcast from the pack, having left it over a decade ago, but Stanzie needed this diversion to get her mind off Murphy (at least a little). I loved the suspense element as she investigated strange and dangerous occurrences with other members of the pack she trusted, all the while dealing with the fallout of her ban, and the people who had turned on her…including her own father. What she discovers is such a great twist that I didn’t see it coming! Kudos to Ms. Burgess for a surprising plot element! Stanzie faces her deepest fears and much mistrust by going back home and confronting her past. Her story in INSIDE OUT was a breakthrough for her, and she has now become a much stronger woman. I look forward to seeing how this series wraps up.Ms. Burgess has a fantastic ability for characterization and the writing was excellent. The secondary characters were also well written and integral to moving the story along. I would highly recommend INSIDE OUT to fans of urban fantasy and particularly readers of shifter stories. 4 of 5 Stars Author Bio

2012 vs. 2013 Who will win?
WOW! What a year!
As I rounded the corner from 2011 to 2012 (a year ago, can you believe it?), my publishing prospects were dim. I wasn’t looking forward to another year of rejection after having spent the previous 3.5 years querying a million agents on 3 books and getting the big R. I decided 2012 was the year I’d concentrate on submitting my novels to publishers on my own. I didn’t want another year to go by without a book contract. Too much time had elapsed since my first novel CHASING SHADOWS was published in 2008 (in eBook form).
I made the best decision to proceed on my own. Like one of those mysteries of life. The sun finally shone down upon me and all those years of drought led me to the crystal geyser. As they say at the AW Forum, “never give up, never surrender.” I’m so glad I listened and didn’t give up! Good things come to those who wait and work their tail off. Believe it.
Here’s a rundown of 2012:
1) March 28: submitted WICKED PARADISE query & partial manuscript to new F+W Media’s imprint Crimson Romance. Another day, another submission.
2) March 29: received a request to read the full manuscript from managing editor Jennifer Lawler. Not holding my breath…been there, done that. But it was still exciting as all full requests are.
3) May 7: received (and accepted) offer to publish WICKED PARADISE from Jennifer @ Crimson! Woohooo! The best day ever! My drought had ended.
4) May 25: submitted my young adult novel VIGILANTE NIGHTS to F+W Media’s new YA imprint Merit Press. I thought it fit their submission guidelines well, and I was excited about this submission from the start. Yet, it’s written from a boy’s point of view and not one of the hugely popular genres in young adult fiction. Even knowing this, something felt right.
5) July 12: Jackie Mitchard @ Merit Press emailed me and said she wanted to talk to me about VIGILANTE NIGHTS! Talk? To me? OMG. Usually, when an editor wants to talk, it’s good. It doesn’t always result in a sale, so I tried to contain my excitement. Due to our summer schedules, we didn’t touch base until early August.
6) July 21: I stumbled across CHASING SHADOWS on BN.com. With a NEW cover. In PRINT. Print? No one told me it had gone to print. I thought it was a mistake. I contacted the publisher and sure enough, no mistake. 4-years after CHASING SHADOWS was released in eBook form, it had gone to print! My dream to hold a print copy of one of my books just came true! I thought this day would never happen, especially with my first published book.
7) August 13: WICKED PARADISE was released in eBook format.
8) August 28: after some back and forth communication, then an excruciating 2-week silence, I received an email from Jackie Mitchard, offering to publish VIGILANTE NIGHTS! This was the real deal: an advance, hardcover, paperback, eBook, traditional print offer! Holy freaking cow! This was the best day ever now!
9) August 28: I contacted agent Natalie Fischer Lakosil and told her about my offer. It was after business hours and she said something had compelled her to check her email. She responded quickly and dropped everything to read VN. Natalie liked 2 other books I had submitted to her in the past, coming close on both of them, but ultimately didn’t offer representation. Plus, I had met her at RWA Nationals in July as a fluke standing in line at a book signing. I had no doubt she would be the first agent I would contact. It just seemed meant to be.
10) August 29: received and accepted offer of representation from Natalie.
11) Need I say more?
12) November 1: WICKED PARADISE is released in print.
13) I met an amazing, caring, supportive group of authors at Crimson Romance.
2012: Best. Year. Ever.
2013: I challenge you to top 2012!

WEATHERING ROCK - Blog Tour
I'm thrilled to host Mae Clair and her paranormal / time-travel romance novel WEATHERING ROCK as my last hosted blog tour of 2012. As some of you may know, I have a special fondness for time-travel romance, so I was excited to read about WEATHERING ROCK and have added it to my TBR list. The Civil War period of American history is also a fantastic backdrop for a time-travel.
Drawn together across centuries, will their love be strong enough to defeat an ancient curse? Find out in WEATHERING ROCK.

Colonel Caleb DeCardian was fighting America’s Civil War on the side of the Union when a freak shower of ball lightning transported him to the present, along with rival and former friend, Seth Reilly. Adapting to the 21st century is hard enough for the colonel, but he also has to find Seth, who cursed him to life as a werewolf. The last thing on Caleb’s mind is romance. Then fetching Arianna Hart nearly runs him down with her car. He can’t deny his attraction to the outspoken schoolteacher, but knows he should forget her.
Arianna finds Caleb bewildering, yet intriguing: courtly manners, smoldering sensuality and eyes that glow silver at night? When she sees Civil War photographs featuring a Union officer who looks exactly like Caleb, she begins to understand the man she is falling in love with harbors multiple secrets--some of which threaten the possibility of their happiness.
Finding a decent guy who'll commit is hard enough. How can she except Caleb to forsake his own century to be with her? Buy Links:

“Stop it!” Arianna shook off Wyn’s grip, pivoting to face him. “Are you crazy?”
Before he could answer, something slammed against the door. Caleb screamed. The sound knifed through her like the violent jolt of an electrical wire.
“Caleb!” She launched herself at the door, panicked and terrified by the thought of the man she loved in horrific pain.
“Don’t!” Wyn stiff-armed her aside and grabbed the knob, forcibly holding it in place. “Get a chair. Something, anything! We’ve got to keep him locked inside.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Arianna, get a fricking chair. Now!”
There was another crash, and then a bang as something heaved against the door, making it shudder from top to bottom. Arianna heard a snarl that turned her blood to ice. The door rattled in its frame, weakening as something battered against it. Something inhuman locked in the room with Caleb.
A cold fist clamped over her stomach.
“Wyn, what’s going on?”
“Chair!” he spat. “Get me a damn chair.”
The raw urgency of his voice plowed through her confusion. She darted into the dining room, snagged a chair, and dragged it into the hallway. The thing in the parlor was still hammering away, heaving itself against the door in an attempt to burst through. Wyn’s face was white with strain as he struggled to hold the door shut with both hands. He rammed the top of the chair beneath the knob, wedging it securely into place. A blood-thirsty howl exploded from the other side, kicking Arianna’s heartbeat into overdrive.
“My God, Wyn, what’s going on?” She lurched for the door.
“Don’t. You don’t know what you’re doing.” Wyn caught her around the waist and swung her up against the wall.
She tried to squirm free. “I know Caleb’s trapped in there. We have to help him! There’s something in the room. Can’t you hear it?”
He held her wrists, pinning her arms to the wall. “Listen to me!” His eyes were wild, his face inches from hers. With a single frenetic skip of her heart, she realized he was as terrified as she was.
“There’s nothing in the room. Only Caleb. Do you hear me, Arianna? It’s Caleb.”
“No!” She shook her head, unwilling to believe what he told her, but another ear-splitting snarl fanned her fear higher. Nothing made sense. Not the stark fear in Wyn’s eyes, the sweat-slickened grip of his palms crushing her wrists or the chillingly inhuman sounds coming from the parlor. The man she loved could never sound so guttural or barbarous.
“I don’t care!” She ripped free of his hold. “I don’t care if he’s by himself or in there with something else. You have to help him!”
She lunged for the door, but Wyn grappled her around the waist, holding fast. They were still struggling when the sound of shattering glass rang through the narrow center hall of Weathering Rock. Buy Links:Amazon

Mae Clair knew from the time she entered grade school that she wanted to be a writer. She credits her parents with instilling in her an insatiable love of reading through weekly trips to the library when she was a child. Her father, an artist who tinkered with writing, encouraged her to create characters and make-believe worlds by spinning tales of far-off places on summer nights beneath the stars.
Inspired by folktales, legends and things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, she loves to blend the fantastical with the ordinary. Her heroes are known to be flawed and complex, her heroines capable, independent and sexy.
Throughout the years she has been actively involved in various writing and critique groups and is a past President of the Central Pennsylvania Writers’ Organization. She lives in Pennsylvania and is married to her high school sweetheart (a.k.a. the Love of Her Life). In her downtime she enjoys reading, digital scrapbooking and unwinding with her husband by the pool when the fickle PA weather permits. A self-admitted idealist, Mae is passionate about writing, old photographs, a good Maine lobster tail and cats. Author Links:Website

Buy Links:
