CATWALK at The Rijksmuseum - by Young (Author Young's European travels)
Fashion has been in my veins ever since I can remember. I cannot survive a day without encountering fashion in its varied silhouettes and manifestations. They may be maniacal clothing, textiles, and accessory fads or everlasting art, writing, interior design and architectural styles; I���m here to embrace the mode in its myriad configurations.
On our first day in the Canal City, Walter and I visited the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum where Fashion found me by divine provocation. We went to the Rijks to prise the Masters of Dutch and Flemish Golden Age; the likes of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Bosch, Ruych, and a long list of accomplished artists.
As we venerated the distinctive attributes of the grandmasters, I was confronted by CATWALK - a costume exhibition designed by the renowned Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf. The items on display were worn by Dutch aristocrats and socialites from 1625 to 1960, and the presentation sprawled across six museum galleries. The journey began with garments that were produced during the Dutch Golden Age and also culminated examples of 20th-century French haute couture Maisons of Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.
My brush with French fashion designers began in 1966 when I was stationed at the Kosk Household, which I documented in A Harem Boy���s Saga ��� Book I ��� Initiation; a memoir by Young. The wives and daughters of my then patriarch, Hadrah Hakim were on a Parisian haute shopping spree, and I was a part of their entourage. After we left La Maison Christian Dior (at the time headed by Marc Bohan) and the House of Emanuel Ungaro, we finally arrived at Yves Saint Laurent.
I have included an excerpt from my brief encounter with the legendary Saint Laurent below:
...After the maestro���s fashion presentation, the man himself came to greet us. I was again in awe, as I did when I met Monsieurs Bohan and Ungaro. I stood speechless, mesmerized by the slender elegance of the young Yves, and did not know what to say or do. Nasreen and Shiya introduced me to the maestro and mentioned that I was an aspiring fashion designer, and asked him to take me under his wing.
Yves responded, "Si agr��able de vous rencontrer. So nice to meet you. As you know, I have only been a designer for a short time. I don't know if I am capable of providing any valuable advice to you lad.���
Terribly nervous, I muttered, "I am so honored to meet you, sir. I am an admirer of your work.���
"Dites merci! Thank You! You are too kind. I am delighted to answer any questions you may have regarding fashion.���
Not knowing what ask, I uttered timidly, ���May I take a picture of you and your staff?���
He smiled cheerfully and nodded, "We'll be delighted. Where would you like us to stand?���
"How about standing on the staircase?���
True to his promise, after his conversation with the Kosk ladies he gathered his venduses and a couple of his seamstresses for a photoshoot. Voila! I had a picture of the famous Yves Saint Laurent and his Maison staff as a remembrance of my first visit to this legendary designer's salon.
Afterward, the designer asked one of his venduses to show me the L'Atelier as he had a meeting to attend. That week was definitely one of those rare occasions on which fantasy met reality; never in my life would I have imagined I would have had the opportunity to meet all these great designers who would eventually shape my fashion career in their unique ways���.
Here I stood to acclaim their consummate achievements at the notable Rijksmuseum, fifty years later. These world-renowned grandmasters had and will continue to shape my numerous creative endeavors; be they in fashion, art, design, and penmanship.

On The Street Where You Live - by Young (Author Young's European travels)
I was in desperate need of high culture, the first morning in Amsterdam. Although Maui���s scenic beauty is uncompared; cultured sophistication, it sorely lacks; hence my desire to return to Europe to commence the next chapter of our adult lives. Walter, my husband has been on the island for 27 years and me, for 20 years. It is time for new adventures and different playgrounds to continue our life experiences.
After an ample Hollandish breakfast at The Amsterdam American Hotel, I was eager to evince to my beloved, my introductory encounter with this Canal City which I had documented so eloquently in A Harem Boy���s Saga ��� Book III ��� Debauchery; a memoir by Young. Here, I took the liberty to insert an excerpt from Debauchery: On The Street Where You Live (chapter twenty-one); of my first impression in this refined metropolis.

Through the narrow streets of Amsterdam, the gold Jaguar S and our metallic bluish silver vintage Silver Arrow meandered toward Herengracht, a wealthy and expensive enclave of Gouden Bocht (Golden Bend). Double-width mansions and townhouses with inner gardens and coach houses (converted into spacious garages) were built between 1890 and 1915 in the Art Nouveau style. These architectural marvels lined the street along the Patricians' Canal. The heavily embellished wrought-iron balconies, patterned stone walls, molded plaster and leaded glass window-panes lined with rows of leafy green trees transported me back to the Belle Epoch era. I couldn���t help but feel as if I was on the film set of ���My Fair Lady,��� where the handsome Freddy Eynsford-Hill would suddenly appear, singing, ���On The Street Where You Live��� in hot pursuit of Eliza Doolittle.
Our vehicles stopped in front of a five-story townhouse. No sooner had we alighted onto the front pavement of this charming residence than a butler appeared at the grand oak door to greet us. We were ushered into the high-ceilinged parlor. The vehicles we had arrived in had disappeared to the back of the property, where our luggage was unloaded by resident footmen and servants.
Jabril and the butler, Ricard, showed us to our respective rooms. My newly appointed Valet and I shared a spacious room with an antique four-poster King bed located on the 3rd floor, while Andy and Albert were on the second. The upper levels were off limits. These were the Sheik���s private chambers. There, he had a spacious penthouse bedroom with a stunning view of the city, a private indoor and outdoor dining area, a rooftop Jacuzzi and a heated dip pool. The floor below was the doctor���s office, his den, and a spacious lounge.
The rooms on the first floor were allocated as the family room, a recreational facility, a drawing room and a well-stocked library that could be used as a music chamber. On the ground floor was the parlor and a conservatory that led out into an inner garden and courtyard. Opposite the staircase was a large dining chamber, used mainly for stately functions and celebratory events.
The servants��� quarters and kitchen were at the back of the house and below the stairs, respectively���.
This was where Walter and I meandered in search of my past on our first day in the Netherlands.

Let���s Start At The Very Beginning
Let���s Start At The Very Beginning
���It���s a very good place to start. When you read you begin with ABC, when you sing you begin with Do, Re, Mi���,��� Julie Andrews sang in the internationally acclaimed, The Sound of Music.
Like her, I���m also here to start at the very beginning; of Walter and my honeymoon in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. My introduction to this City of Canals began in 1968 when I was under Sheik Fahrib���s auspice, my 4th Arab household harem service. For those who have read A Harem Boy���s Saga ��� book IV ��� Turpitude; a memoir by Young (aka Bernard Foong), you would have read my wonderful adventures in this enchanting metropolis. Here I am, 50 years later with my husband and guiding him down memory lane to revisit the exotic locales I experienced.
To make it easy for you to understand I will start with the notes - Do, Re, Mi, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Te:
Do ��� to begin the first day of our honeymoon, the aroma of freshly baked dough in the recently redecorated Art Deco Amsterdam American Hotel���s restaurant was an enticing draw to an early breakfast before a day out in the freezing temperature. Our rumbling bellies desperately needed nourishment after twenty-four hours of marathon traveling. And dough in all shapes, sizes, flavors, and fillings came through for us with flying colors.
Re ��� During our brief stay in this wintery city, there was not a drop of golden sun to be found; but the hospitality of the Amsterdam American Hotel more than made up for the dreariness outside. I knew I had returned to the bosom of an edifying grande dame whom my then patriarch, Dr. Fahrib had introduced to my ex-lover/chaperone/Valet, Andy, and moi. And here I am with husband, Wally, to once again relive my time in her enthralling affection.
Mi - A name I call myself; I couldn���t say Thank You enough for the love, richness, and abundance of life, the universe had bestowed upon me. The one universal secret I���ve discovered is gratitude. The more thankful I am, the more plentitude ricochet my way.
Fa ��� It had indeed been a long, long way to run from sunny Maui to wintery Amsterdam. But our sojourn was well worth the distance because our fiery love had kept the chills at bay as we explored the city���s cultural richness to my beloved.
So ��� I asked Walter his thoughts. And this was what he said, ���To be honest, I hate this darn cold!��� To which I replied, ���Well, we���ll have to return next Spring so I can reveal to you the beautiful tulips of Amsterdam.��� I am sure with some gentle persuasion, we will be back to good ole Amsterdam in the not too distant future.
La ��� the note to follow so; is that we had a marvelous time in the intimate Canal City during our fleeting visit. And you, my dears will no doubt hear from moi sooner than you���ll expect.
Te ��� Last but not least, Afternoon Tea at the Amsterdam American Hotel is to die for.

Walter Jay Bissett & Bernard Tristan Foong's (aka Young) Wedding on Maui
Are Marriages Made in Heaven?
Some say marriages are made in heaven, while others say matrimony is a wedding of convenience. Yet there are those who swore that wedlock is the first step to hell, where angels fear to tread. I say nuptials are all of the above; mixed into a smoldering cauldron and allowed to simmer until the braise is ripe for consummation.
This was what Walter and I did on a glorious Maui evening in the festive month of December 10th 2017. Our sizzling courtship that began in August 1997 had seethed to passionate ardor when my beloved proposed to me in 2007, in none other than the City of Romance, Paris. I was in the city for a fashion assignment, and he was there to woo me with poesies of love and promises of devotion high above Montmartre at a charming bistro; while Sacr��-C��ur watched from above.
It had been ten years since our betrothal and close to twenty-one years of living-in-sin; when we finally tied-the-knot. Although in our eyes we are already ���married,��� without having the court of law to grant us approbation; but taxwise, we stood to benefit if we were legally wed. And so we did without hesitation, even though we had originally planned to get hitched in France upon our retirement to the Land of Gaule.
Although our Maui ceremony was an intimate affair, it was nonetheless significant as it marked the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. For me, I���m simply delighted that I had made the right decision to marry the gallant gentleman who had since become my trusted friend, devoted confider and bosom auditor.
Walter, on the other hand, had taken our union to heart. He was the ebullient entrant who made most of our wedding arrangements. From venue scouting, wedding officiant, soloist and musician solicitation, floral arrangements, rings reconnoitering to guests R��pondez s'il vous pla��t (RSVP); while moi���s job was to show up at the appointed date/day/time to say ���I do.��� In my voguish garb, no less.
One cannot keep a secret these days especially with the social media bellowing and blaring out loud. Instantly our nuptial ���I dos��� pictures were already on Facebook; posted by none other than by one of our invitees (whom I will not name). LOL!
The following morning, when I entered the gym, the owner, Sam remarked, ���Love your wedding outfit. Looks good!��� Next, came the quiet susurrate from Jen, my Body 101 instructress who queried, ���Did you get married yesterday at Gannon���s?��� I was at once bewildered yet amused that word and images of Walter and my espousal had gotten out of the bag so rapidly. That spearheaded me to write this confession; to make my official announcement that Walter Jay Bissett and I, Bernard Tristan Foong Cheng Yoong is now officially husband and husband.
There you have it. The cat is out of the bag, and my husband and I wish you all A Delightful Season���s Greetings & A Marvelous New 2018. As for us; we���re off to France on Monday, basking in blissful honeymoon during this festive season. ����
