Welcome back Rocky Rochford - author extraordinaire

Young: Hello Rocky! Nice to see you again.

Rocky Rochford (R.R.): Nice to be back.

Young: For those who have not met my friend and fellow author, the multi-talented Rocky Rochford, let me introduce him again.

Rocky, you are a Scuba Diving, thrill seeking, sword collecting, rum swigging Writer and you don't choose what you write, but write what chooses you and you wouldn't have it any other way, so says your bio.

You went on to say that a writer is what you have been from day one and will continue to be so, until the day you're nothing more than a corpse in the ground. Even then, odds are your bony hand would continue scribbling away for eternity.

Facinating! LOL!

R.R.: That is correct.

Now as for my works, I am an author of many genres, I've recently released a Poetry Collection. I have written a number of short stories, both stand-alone pieces and as part of a continuing series. As far as genres go, I write Fantasy, Adventure, Thriller, Psychological Thrillers, Espionage, YA & Supernatural.

Young: What are you going to talk with our readers today?

R.R: Today I would like to talk about my latest works to be released. Two latest installments as part of the Entwined Saga, which sees its Witch Protagonist Matthew Radley on a race against time to save someone he's never even said hello to.

Young: Eh Ha! Do continue.

R.R.: Let me give you a brief introduction of The Entwined Saga

This is the Life story of one Matthew Radley, a troubled soul at the end of his life. Unable to go on, he commits the act of suicide to end it all, but Death is just the Beginning of the End for Matthew. First you will watch him die and then you will understand why.

Life deals us different hands, for Matthew he was dealt the worst, from the age of 16 he has no choice but to watch his life spiral out of control. The Entwined Saga is a story of Life, Love, Corruption, Magick and Death.

Current Installments in the series:

 *Dead on the Floor

 *The First Glance

 *I Watched Her Die

 *Burning For You

 *Save Her

Young: Let's go through each book at a time. I'm sure my readers will like a gentle reminder of the first book in the series: Dead on the Floor

R.R.: Here it is;

The beginning of the End starts now. For some of us, Life can be cruel, dealing us a losing hand and for Matthew Radley, a young Wiccan practitioner that is exactly what he got. After a lifetime of chaos, pain and losing himself, he finally got everything he wanted, the woman he loved, the future he desired and a reason to live, but in a single moment he lost it all. Unable to take the pain and no longer desire to live, Matthew takes the one thing he has left, his own life. For Matthew, his story has to end, in order for it to begin, his story has no happy ending, for his is a life of Love, Magick, Corruption & Death and only asks for understanding.

An Extract

“Have you ever seen something, something you really wished you hadn't? Something so bad that even the thought of it afterwards, is still more than enough to bring you to your knees? Something so bad that you close your eyes and pray as hard as you can to unsee it, but it never works? Yeah, me too, every day of my life.”

Upon Your Honor

Young: Your novel,  Upon Your Honor is   published with Solstice. How did you discover Solstice Publishing?

M.L.: In 2011, my first historical romance,  Upon Your Return , which was also the first book of the Heiresses in Love series, was fully edited and ready for agents or publishers. Little did I know that it would take a year to find the right fit. After numerous rejections from agents, I decided to go a different route and go straight to publishers. I eventually found Solstice; they looked at  Upon Your Return  and loved it!  The book was published in February of 2013.  Upon Your Honor  is the second book in the series and it came out this April.

Young: Tell us where did your inspiration come from for this book? Was there a character that just had to be heard? Was there an event that inspired you to start writing?

M.L.: Not too long after Upon Your Return was accepted by Solstice, I started thinking about how I really wasn’t done with the characters, that there was so much more to tell.  There had to be something more I could do.  One day, the first scene of  Upon Your Honor  came to me, that of Chloe Waverly stowing on aboard a ship, and I just knew this girl had a story to tell.  Later, Gabriel (he was a minor character from the first book) showed up and it just exploded from there. From the time that  Upon Your Return  and Upon Your Honor were published, I have had so many requests from readers to delve into other characters that were mentioned, and I took that to heart.  Soon after I started writing  Upon Your Honor , the idea for the next book came to me as well.

Young: Does your background (in terms of job, family, geographic location, etc.) play into your writing? What kind of research went into your story?

M.L.: I wouldn’t say my job or location plays into this story, but the sense of family in these stories really does come out.  I did a lot of historical research on the anatomy of a ship and how sailors behaved then.  I even found journals written by sailors.  I also did a lot of research about each port the characters visited as well as research on the time period in general.  I did everything I could to make the story come to life.

Young: Describe the genres in which you write (paranormal, contemporary, westerns, etc.) If you write in more than one genre or area (poetry, non-fiction), do you have a different process when you're writing different kinds of fiction or non-fiction?

M.L.: I mainly write fiction, though I have dabbled in poetry and written some articles during my journey as an author.  My focus is the romance genre, but I have tackled its subgenres before:  contemporary, historical, paranormal and suspense. As for my numerous works in progress, I am all over the place, and yes, I have even attempted western and time travel romance.  My process for writing any type of fiction is usually the same; I let the scenes come to me randomly until I’m ready to really focus on that project.  Then I start plotting and researching.

When I write poetry, I don’t try to force it, but a line will come to me and I let it play out the way it wants.  With articles, sometimes I just start with a topic and go from there.  I usually don’t need an outline unless it’s a very complicated subject; with any article, however, I always proof it before anyone sees it.

 Mariepic2 - small1_pe

Young: What is your mind set or process as you sit down to write? Do you have a playlist going? Do you need complete silence? Are you a 6 am writer or an 11 pm writer?

M.L.: I don’t have any specific techniques.  The ideas just come to me, and I write them down wherever I am.  If I’m heavily focused on a project, I will try to commit myself to writing every day, even several times a day if possible (unless that day is specifically meant for research).  Sometimes I do listen to music; I even try to match the music to the genre or subgenre I am writing.  For example, I have listened to Celtic music when I was writing a historical romance/fantasy before. Music can definitely affect your writing.  There are times when I do need complete silence to concentrate, however.  I don’t usually write early in the morning (not a morning person), but I do write anywhere from afternoon to late at night.

Young: How do you balance writing with work and/or personal life?

M.L.: It is hard to balance all of it. I just try to fit promotion and writing in along with work and my personal life if I can. Some days, I have to train myself to say “no” to one or two tasks in order to allow the important things in. Even if I put something off until the next day, it still gets accomplished. I applaud writers who can juggle it all effortlessly.

Young: Do you have any other projects you're working on?

M.L.: Of course.  I just finished up writing on a children’s fantasy story, titled A Little Magick, which is also the sequel to Magick & Moonlight, a book that was released in March.  I am also working on the third book of the Heiresses in Love Series.  It is titled Upon Your Love.  Additionally, I have one new book, Second Nature, a paranormal romance/urban fantasy, which should be releasing very soon through Solstice Shadows Publishing if it hasn’t already by the time this interview is published.

Young: Marie is giving us a sneak peak of the book cover for Second Nature.

SecondNature-final

M.L.: For readers who are interested to pre-order Second Nature, this is the purchase link: http://www.amazon.com/Second-Nature-Blood-First-Sight-ebook/dp/B00Q7FWIWA/

Young: Last but not least, do you have any words of advice for aspiring writers?

M.L.: Learn everything you can about the business. Don’t get arrogant; everyone has room to learn more. You never know. Someone’s advice might really work for you. Read a lot of books in your genre just to get a feel for how things are done, but don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone from time to time. What else?  Oh!  Just relax.  Never stop writing, but don’t push yourself too hard either. Enjoy the time when writing is just for enjoyment; being an “author” is hard work.

A chat with author Vicki-Ann Guidice Bush

Photo 1_pe

Young: Hi Vicki-Ann, thank you for dropping by, In The Harem. Nice to have you with us today.

Vicki-Ann Guidice Bush (V-A.G.B.): Thanks for inviting me on your weekly blog.

Young: You're welcome, mademoiselle! Let me introduce you to my readers;

Ms. Bush currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was originally from Floral Park, New York. She says she gains most of her inspiration from the beauty of the surrounding desert and the lush landscapes and from her childhood memories.

V-A.G.B.: That is indeed true. My new book The Garden of Two is released today.

Young: Congratulations! Tell us about The Garden of Two

V-A.G.B.: The Garden of Two is published with Solstice.

Young: How did you discover Solstice Publishing?

V-A.G.B.: I found Solstice Publishing through an on line search for publishers and they accept unsolicited manuscripts.

Young: That's wonderful! You mentioned that you're giving away two copies of The Garden of Two eBooks and a grand prize of a 11x17 signed poster of the book cover.

V-A.G.B.: That's correct, but participants will have to answer two questions. If they give the correct answers then they winner the prizes. Here are the questions:

* What is my favorite book?

* What are my three favorite movies and what do they have in common?

Young: Will the participants get clues to your questions?

V-A.G.B.: Of course. The clues/answers can be found on my Facebook author page www.facebook.com/VickiAnn.Bush.Author

There is one other thing I'll like from the participants -  please Like the page while they are in the site.

The Garden of Two

The Garden of Two

An Excerpt

Charlie Murphy and Lillie Whitman are surrounded by the innocence of young love, and the guileless early twentieth century. They fall deeper into each other, intertwining their very different worlds to create a bond that no one can break.

Or so they thought.

When the dawn of World War I comes to their Long Island town, and personal tragedies begin to spiral the lovers into an abyss of darkness, they must fight to hold on to their love. Knowing their bond will be the only ties that will get them through. From the horrors of Germany's front lines to the emotional battle fields fought at home, Charlie and Lillie must find a way to stay strong, and navigate a path, back into each others arms. And how a garden, a very special garden, can withstand the coldest of winters and give the ultimate symbol of hope.

***

Although fictional, The Garden of Two represents the authors experience of young love and the promise of forevermore.

Ms. Bush other works include, The Dusk Chronicles trilogy, featuring these five star reviews—

SUPER cool story that had me hooked!

A Clever Time-Travel Adventure

Her other works include the children books, Winslow Willow the Woodland Fairy and The Queen of It and her paranormal novelette, The Fulfillment.

 The Garden of Two

Young: That's fantastic! I'm sure the readers will like to know more about you. First and foremost; Where did your inspiration come from for The Garden of Two? Was there a character that just had to be heard? Was there an event that inspired you to start writing?

V-A.G.B.: In my back yard from a house I lived in for seventeen years. My husband planted fire-thorns on the back wall. I was sitting out there admiring them one day and the story unfolded.Yes, Lillie. She is in many ways, like me at her age. Yes. When I was thirteen, there was a school contest. We had to write a story, construct the book, and from there I was hooked.

Young: Does your background (in terms of job, family, geographic location, etc.) play into your writing? What kind of research went into your story?

V-A.G.B.: All of the above mentioned plays into every book I write. I watched numerous documentaries on World War I, watched testimonies from then surviving servicemen and read many articles.

Young: Can you describe the genres in which you write (paranormal, contemporary, westerns, etc.) Do you write in more than one genre or area (poetry, non-fiction)? Do you have a different process when you're writing different kinds of fiction or non-fiction?

V-A.G.B.: It seems most of what I write has a romantic component to it. Whether it be paranormal, historical or an adventure for children, there is always an underlining romance going on. My process really doesn't vary, it's basically just the music. With each book there is new music playing.

Young: Tell the readers what is your mind set or process as you sit down to write? Do you have a playlist going? Do you need complete silence? Are you a 6 am writer or an 11 pm writer.

V-A.G.B.: I just sit and it comes. I don't have a process as I mentioned before. I do have a playlist, but I don't always use that. I've plugged several different albums in to listen to depending on the the work. Once in a while, I do have complete silence. If the scene is especially difficult, sometimes the music can make it too hard for me to write. I am a morning writer.

Young: Vicki-Ann, do you have any other projects you're working on now that you've completed The Garden of Two?

V-A. G.B.: I just completed a YA Sci-Fi, it's with beta readers at the moment and I started a new novel, that is very different than anything I've written so far.

Young: That brings me to my finale question, do you have any words of advice for aspiring writers?

V-A.G.B.: Keep writing ... Don't stop. If you love what you do, then that's what matters to you.

Young: Last but not least, where can readers fine you and your books?

This week's guest author, David K Bryant

P1010117

Young: Hi David, thanks for dropping by my blog. How are you? You look swell on horseback. :)

David K Bryant (D.K.B.): Thanks for having me.

Young: Before further ado, let's jump in and tell us about you.

D.K.B.:  I have a brain that’s never still. (I actually applied that to one of my characters – so there’s an instance of my personality getting into the stories.) I cannot be doing nothing. I find it difficult even to watch television, even if I’m interested in the show. So, I suppose I have to go along with that brain. Writing is a way of doing so.

I started writing fiction after retiring from journalism and public relations. I suppose the books waited their turn during all the years I wrote articles, features, speeches and promotional material for other people. My career included running a district office for a daily newspaper, helping to introduce professional PR into the British police service and promoting a major parliamentary Bill for Margaret Thatcher’s government. I live in Somerset, one of the nicest counties in England, and am blessed with a wonderful family. My wife Stephanie and I have been married for forty years. We are proud of our two children Matthew and Melanie, grandson Henry, son-in-law Jamie and daughter-in-law Fleur.

Young: Fantastic! Like you, I have a brain that's never still. LOL! Joking aside, tell my readers about your latest book.

D.K.B.: The book title is Tread Carefully on the Sea - Captain Flint, king of the 18th Century pirates, makes the mistake of his career when his men kidnap the Governor of Jamaica's adopted daughter.

Step up the gangplank to an adventure tale set in the 18th Century, when the world made its money from conquest and slavery, pirates were the muggers of the sea lanes and life was fragile – with violence and disease never far away.

Tread Carefully on the Sea is my first novel. Packed with historical atmosphere, I will take you on a voyage from Jamaica to the “New World” of the American colonies. The action comes as rapidly as the horrors in a ghost train, starting with the kidnapping of an aristocratic young woman on the night of her 21st birthday party by Captain Flint’s crew.

Amidst conspiracy, murder, cannonades, bare-knuckle boxing, disease and a devastating storm, there is the chance for all the main characters to reveal the better or worse sides of their natures. This is a swashbuckle, yes, but it’s also a story about the strengths and weaknesses of believable human beings.

I’ve written an escapist yarn in the tradition of high adventure but in much more user-friendly language than the old classics. It’s exciting, involving, a bit tear-jerking and is pure adventure and romance.”

Young: Can you give us a teaser?

D.K.B.: Here is an EXTRACTS:

**

As the shirt was removed, her eyes came level with a huge tattoo of an eagle on his chest. Ridiculously, that gave her renewed terror, as though the tattoo was worse than the man. There was certainly menace from the eagle. It stared at her, its talons outstretched and its wings spread wide. It looked prepared to pounce right out of his chest and claw at her face.

**

The cry that would have brought forth a dozen soldiers was about to leave the governor’s tongue – but remained unleashed as the pirate warned: “I wouldn’t do that, Governor, for the sake of your niece’s health.”

**

“Did you get the name of the ship?” demanded the governor.

“It was the Walrus, Sir,” the messenger replied.

“Captain Flint,” said Trelawny, and for the moment that was all he did say.

**

One of the stories that had evoked within the Royal Navy a sneaking admiration for the pirate chieftain was that he had captured a big Spanish galleon and made it his own. Now Townsend could see in front of him the confirmation of that audacity. The big ship sat on the ocean like she owned it.

**

“Britain came to this part of the world to find riches. It was very successful in doing so but it had a major problem. It was shipping around so many slaves and so much merchandise that it didn’t have sufficient military resources to protect its new-found wealth. So what did it do about the policing of its trade routes and the protection of places like Jamaica? It found it convenient to encourage the people you would call pirates…You had better hope that the King never turns against the Royal Navy in the same way that he turned against the privateers.

Tread Carefully on the Sea cover picture

Young: Have you written other books or short stories other than “Tread Carefully on the Sea” ?

D.K.B.: I have three other books on the go. The nearest to completion is a novel set in ancient Rome and based on historical events – but with my own characters. Like “Tread Carefully on the Sea” it took a lot of research but I’m pleased with it.

For my third and fourth books, I have turned to an era that I well remember – the 1960s and 70s.

Number 3 is partially sci-fi, but more about political intrigue during the UFO panics of the 60s.

Number 4 is a police mystery/thriller.

If there’s to be a Number 5, it hasn’t entered my head yet.

Young: Where can readers find your book?

D.K.B.: They can find it on Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Tread-Carefully-Sea-David-Bryant-ebook/dp/B00OJD7QGU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414595915&sr=8-1&keywords=tread+carefully+on+the+sea

Young: How did you get started in writing?

D.K.B.: I was a journalist so I was always writing. I didn’t start properly on books, however, until after I retired. I’d had one go at a book during my working life and read it to my son Matthew when he was quite young. Then one day when he was in his twenties, he asked if he could read the story again. I was ashamed to offer an adult something I knew was an inadequate, lumpy yarn so I wrote it again. It became “Tread Carefully on the Sea”. I’ve dedicated it to Matthew because of that.

Young: What do you think are the biggest challenges for the type of writing that you do?

D.K.B: Time travel! As you will have seen, my books are different from each other. The one thing they have in common is that they’re set in the past. To tackle that, I think the author has to imagine him/herself in that era. Hard to do when we live in an age that’s seen so many advances in communications. Just one example: In “Tread Carefully on the Sea” there are long periods when some of the characters are separated from each other. I had to imagine a married couple failing to hear from each other for a year because the letters took so long to cross the world or didn’t arrive at all. As the book developed, I exploited the idea and had one of the protagonists arrive home to find he had a daughter. At the time he’d left, his wife hadn’t yet realized she was pregnant.

Young: How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

D.K.B.: Personality: - There’s some. I try to get inside my character’s heads and work out how they would react to whatever is happening in the plot. To do that, I’ve got to imagine how I would feel in their situation so, inevitably, there’s “me” in that.

Life experiences: Oh yes. Every author says that their characters are based on people they’ve known. Well I challenge all my past acquaintances to spot themselves in my protagonists. I’d love to see who gets it right.

Young: Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

D.K.B.: I grab every minute I can whenever I can. That may be 9am, 3pm, midnight or 4am.

Young: What is your routine once you start writing a book?

D.K.B.: I have a general idea of what the story is going to be. I identify a starting point then set to the keyboard. An event happens, one of the characters whispers into my brain what will result from that event and then they take me through the story. I don’t know how it’s going to end – the protagonists lead me there. When I’ve finally written “The End” I find I’ve got about 40,000 words (half a book). I then go back through and expand. For example, if “this” happened in Chapter 30, then we needed “that” as a build-up to it back in Chapter 17. So I then fill in that gap.

Young: What kind of research do you when writing one of your works?

D.K.B.: Thank God for the internet. Thank Him also for libraries. But I must admit that a lot comes from memory, either of what I’ve read or from personal experience. That’s especially so in the books set in the 1960s and 70s. They involve British politics and the police and I worked in both those fields in that era.

Young: Do you ever ask friends/family for advice or ideas to go into your works?

D.K.B.: I think they’re one of a writer’s greatest resources. My wife Stephanie has helped enormously, especially over women’s stuff. I’ve also had critiques from my son and daughter. But being cautious by nature, I wouldn’t let anyone else see a draft. Plots are too valuable to risk them being stolen.

Young: Have you ever experienced Writer's Block?  If so how did you work through it?

D.K.B.: Lots of times. I’ve sat at the computer not having a clue how to move forward. But the answers come when you least expect it. Most frustrating is if you’re driving, think “Eureka” but get scared stiff you’ll forget the thought before you can stop and write it down. Rule Number One – always carry a notebook and pen.

David k bryant_pe

Young: Who are some of your favourite authors to read?

D.K.B.: Classical. My absolute favourite author is Livy, the historian who wrote a chronicle of Rome from its mythical foundation in 753 BC up to 14 AD. It’s bogged down with laborious detail but also gives a real insight into ancient Rome. My top book is The Odyssey, written in the mists of time by Homer. That’s an absolute romp, full of charm.

Young: Among your own books, have you a favourite book? Favourite Hero or Heroine?

D.K.B.: Yes. My favourite book is The Dust of Cannae. That’s the one set in Rome. It was a huge challenge because it incorporates a number of actual historical events and people. So the research was a massive job. There was also the need to get the atmosphere right. The gods were everywhere in Roman life and nothing was considered or decided without interpretations of divine will. Then there was the army detail, the type of clothing, the buildings, the geography…just loads of stuff to study. In the end, I think (hope) I have produced a compelling story with disparate and interesting people.

My favourite character is in that book. She’s a woman called Constantia. I admire her because I had no conception of including her until, in the middle of the night, she suggested herself to me. She kept on telling me through telepathy what her role and experiences were going to be. You could say she co-authored. I’m not a great one for the supernatural but it was all so real that it felt like a ghost was taking me through my own story. I think she ended up being the strongest character. Bravo, Constantia.

Young: Anything else you'd like to tell our readers?

D.K.B.: Thanks for reading all this.

Young: Where and How can readers get in touch with you?

Young: Lastly do you have any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

D.K.B.: It’s a great way to spend your time, but be careful not to be selfish. You can get your fingers glued to the keys and forget everyone who’s valuable to you.

You’ll have to be a really resilient person because it’s tough in all sorts of ways – especially the getting published bit. But never give up. Don’t let your story go untold.

Any budding writer who has any specific questions is most welcome to contact me. I’ve given my links above.

Young: Thank you for all these information you have given our readers. I wish you every success and good luck to your up-coming projects and future endevours.

D.K.B.: Thank You, Young for having me on your blog. Best Wishes to you too on A Harem Boy's Saga; a memoir by Young - 5 books series.

Tread Carefully on the Sea

The main characters:

Captain Flint is a lonely man. His education, intelligence and wit leave him isolated amongst the pirate crew who sail with him. He feels more affinity with the hostages who are brought aboard his ship but he becomes trapped by the need to escape the consequences of the kidnap and the challenge to his leadership from one of his officers. Flint kills and schemes his way out of several dangers but there are two threats from which he cannot escape. The first is the failing health that he refuses to accept. The second is the scale of his own success as a criminal. He will never be left in peace to enjoy the proceeds of his piracy. In this story we learn what finally happens to him.

Captain Michael Townsend is the model of a disciplined and dutiful Navy officer. He is also a man haunted by something in his past; something that could ruin his future. The decisions forced upon Townsend by the kidnapping help him to resolve his inner conflicts but jeopardize the survival of those he wishes to protect. Townsend’s instincts are to put duty first but will duty deny him happiness?

Jessica Trelawny is the spirited niece of the Governor of Jamaica. She hates the conformity of 18th century society. Soon after she is snatched away from her home she puts her rebellious nature to work against the pirates. Captain Flint learns to admire her — and to regret that she ever came aboard his ship.

Jessica’s maid Libby becomes a prisoner simply because she is with her mistress at the time of the kidnap. She plays a major role in the fight-back against the pirates. Does she bring into use special talents inherited from her African origin — or is she simply a very clever woman?

Patrick O’Hara began life in the squalor of the Irish famine and by a fluke became an officer in the Royal Navy. He is thrust into a vicious bare-knuckle fight aboard the pirate ship. Whether or not O’Hara wins, the legacy of the fight is a power struggle threatening the survival of Captain Flint himself.

The Walrus is the huge black galleon stolen by Flint from a Spanish captain. It has a pivotal role in the narrative and a heart-rending demise when Captain Flint’s voyage of crime comes to an end.

An Interview With Author Mika Jolie

Blog Tour Banner

Young: Hello Mika, how are you? Nice of you to drop in to visit In The Harem.

Mika Jolie (M.J.): Thank you for hosting me on my blog tour for my book release: Need You Now

Young: My pleasure. Nice to have you with us. Tell my readers about your new release.

M.J.: Need You Now is published by Secret Cravings Publishing.

The book is about an Elementary school teacher Liliana Serrano who has never been one to let others determine her future. Whether it’s her pack of three overly protective brothers or her Puerto-Rican, American heritage, she stands on her own. Which is exactly how she entered her arrangement with Adam Aquilani. The hot formula one driver who is aloof, detached and not interested in relationships. After a cheating fiancé, no strings attached sex was just what she needed.

Except a year later, they’re still hooking up and things aren’t that clear cut anymore. Especially when a surprise pregnancy enters the picture.

Adam is determined to marry Lily and raise their child as a family. But Lily refuses to settle for anything less than love.

As the two go on a journey of discovering, secrets are revealed, testing the strength of their connection.

Can they learn not to give the past the power to define their future?

Need You Now is book two of the Martha’s Way series.

NeedYouNow_Final

Young: Now that your latest work is released, what comes next? What can we expect from you in the not too distant future?

M.J.: Well, I’m currently working on book 3 of the Martha’s Way series. There are four books in the series.  Let me state that each book can be read as a standalone. I also introduced Lily’s three brothers in Need You Now. I’m already in love with them and they need to have their Happily Ever After.

Young: Tell us how you got into writing?

M.J.: Writing has always been my pastime. In the beginning of this year I made a goal to finish writing The Scale and have it published sometime this year. To my amazement, now I’m having two books published, with Need You Now in November.

Young: What kind of research do you when writing one of your works?

M.J.: Where do I begin? I do a lot of reading. Thank God for Google. I ask questions. For example, in Need You Now, I spoke to a few people in the medical field, lawyers and police officers. I wanted to be as accurate as possible. So much so, I even wrote a blog about research and writing.

Young: That is fabulous! How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

M.J.: It’s funny you asked that because I just had that exact conversation with my husband. There’s always a bit of me in my characters. Not necessarily life experience, but it could be an item like a bracelet or something. For example, in The Scale, Keely wore a dress that I have (Laughs). In Need You Now, Lily has a pixie hairstyle. A couple of years ago, I cut my hair into that exact style. I miss it.

Young: All the authors I have unterviewed, they all say their characters reflect a little of themselves. :) Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

M.J.: Typically yes. But really it’s a combination. I have to feel what I want to write first and then set time aside and put it all into words.

Young: What is your routine once you start writing a book?

M.J.: I do make sure I have a clear background of my characters. What they look like, professions, age, etc. I also jot down three things. What must happen? Those things are crucial to the story and can’t deviate from them. I also write down what could happen and what may happen? Believe it or not, writing those down helps a lot when I write.

Young: What does your significant other think of your writing? Do you ever ask them for advice or ideas to go into your works?

M.J.: My husband is my biggest fan. He has read The Scale. I do discuss things here and there with him, but his biggest contribution is to look after our two boys and allow me to write when I need to.

Young: That is wonderful to have a supportive husband. Makes life much easier. :) Do you have any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

M.J.: Don’t give up, don’t become generic and stay true to your voice.

Young: Thank You for paying In The Harem a visit. Before you go is there anything else you'd like to tell our readers?

M.J.: I've a Rafflecopter giveaway: http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/b6938c4210/

Young: I wish every success and all the best, Mika.

M.J.: Thank You for interviewing me.

  Need You Now
Excerpt:

Her phone beeped again. Damn it! It wasn’t like her brothers to bother her that much…unless something was actually wrong. “I’m sorry, but I need to check my messages. Something may be wrong.” She offered the apology while reaching for her phone.

The text read—

Liliana

Her heart hitched. Oh Lord, only one man ever called her by her full name.

The second text read—

Where are you? I’ve been trying to reach you for two days.

Her breath caught. She had been ignoring his calls and text messages the last two days. She needed to focus and figure out how to dump his ass. Even the fact that her best friend, Minka, had defended him and advised her to give him a chance to explain had set her off. She couldn’t blame her friend, though. Her mind was clouded and she was high on love. In about eight weeks, Minka was going to marry one of Adam’s best friends. Except Jason had been a model fiancé and never felt the need to kiss any other but his lovely soon-to-be wife. She couldn’t say that about Adam Aquilani.

I’m imagining you naked in my bed.

Oh, God. The room became sweltering hot. She sat in the broiling heat Adam generated even miles away.

I’m horny and I want to make you come. Phone sex?

Her breath rose to her chest and that little spot between her thighs throbbed with need. She didn’t need to read further. She knew the messages would get more explicit. That was Adam’s way and somehow he had managed to entangle her in his dirty little games, including phone sex.

Young: Hello Mark! Nice of you to drop by for a chat on my weekly blog. How are you?

Mark Iles (M.I.): Thank you for having me over. It's nice to connect with you again, Young.

Young: Your resume you send is impressive. It reads;

Mark works at Southampton University but was bought up in Slough, England, where he used to read up to three paperbacks a day. At the age of 17 he joined the Royal Navy as a radio operator and says he’s so lucky to have seen so much of the world. While always interested in writing he began to do so more seriously following his experiences during the Falklands War, in which he served aboard HMS Invincible. His short stories have been published in a wide variety of media and he has also written prolifically about the martial arts for magazines such as Combat and Martial Arts Illustrated.

Passing his MA in Professional Writing with Falmouth University he went on to complete Diplomas in Copywriting, and Proofreading, and now also works part time as a copywriter and Editor as well as writing features and fiction. While writing in all genres Mark’s fiction is primarily SF, fantasy and horror.

Appearing in several anthologies, including Auguries, Escape Velocity, Write to Fight and Monk Punk, his novel ‘A Pride of Lions’ is the first instalment in the Darkening Stars series. Book 2, ‘The Cull of Lions’ is now out and Mark is now working on the third instalment ‘Roar of Lions’. More recently his short story collection, ‘Falling from Grace & Others’, has been released for Kindle.

M.I.:  ‘The Cull of Lions’, the second istallment of ‘A Pride of Lions’  is recently published by Solstice Publishing.

Young: How exciting. Can you give our readers a synopsis of 'A Pride of Lions’ first installment, Darkening Stars?

M.I.: Of course, I'll be happy to. A Pride of Lions

Incidentally, Cull, just had a great review on Amazing Stories: http://amazingstoriesmag.com/2014/11/review-pride-lions-mark-iles/

Young: Do you have anything else you'll like to tell my readers?

M.I.: I’m often asked why I write and the answer is very simple, books have always fascinated me. Having gone through countless novels as a child I found myself engrossed in the wonderful worlds of Science Fiction, fantasy and horror. It’s their ‘what if’ factor that really hooks me.

For instance, ‘what if’ that monster under your bed really exists, and if you discovered you had magical powers would you use them for good or evil? One day I have no doubt we’ll travel to other planets and star systems, just imagine what we might find there! Throughout history mankind has always been beset by war and I there’s no reason why the future will be any different. So, what happens when finally we meet (and I have no doubt that one day we will) an alien race; will we end up in conflict with them and if so how would it end – or could we even end such a war if we couldn’t communicate with them?

Even now, thinking these thing through, ideas are tumbling through my mind, which – believe it or not – is extremely frustrating, because there’s always the urge to write them down and so a story begins. If you don’t do so then those tales tap away at you at your consciousness, like a branch against a window on a cold and stormy night. I’ve said many times that I’m unsure whether being a writer is a gift or a curse, for it affects so many areas of my life. An example here is that I rarely watch television and have only done so a couple of times in five years. People I speak to think that odd, but I’d rather sit and decant these tales whirling around in my mind than anything else. Besides, what authors say is true when they’re asked ‘how do you become a writer?’ The answer is simple. You write, and keep on writing until you find something that you like. But that’s when that the really hard work begins, for you then have to find an agent or editor who likes it too.

Young: Thank you Mark for your insights. Nice having you on my blog. Best Wishes to all your many endevours. Hope to see you again soon.

M.I.: Thank You, Young for having me. Best Wishes to you too. A Pride of Lions

Young:
Hello Angela, nice of you to drop by for a visit. How are you today?

Angela Deppeler (A.D.): I'm doing fantastic! Thank you having me on your blog.

Young: Angela, I hope you don't mind me calling you Angela and not Ms. Deppeler. :)

A.D.: Not at all. Angela works find for me. :)

Young: Tell my readers a little about yourself.

A.D.: I'm a a native of Clarksville, Tennessean. I’m a midnight dispatcher and have been a police dispatcher for fifteen years. I currently live with my daughter and my 7 rescued furbabies.

Young: Your family of furbabies must keep you busy.  I'm sure my readers will like to know did you begin writing the Tremor series?

A.D.: I've been writing stories since I was a little girl.Welcome To Tremor is the first book I've published. Now, I'm working on book 5 in the Tremor series. I’ll love to tell you what book 5 is about but it hasn’t told me yet. LOL.

Young: Give us an introduction to the Tremor series.

A.D.: Welcome To Tremor is the first of the series. To date, there are four books: Wendigo, Once Upon A River View and Demon Lake fill out the growing number. Each book is a stand-alone story and can be enjoyed without the reader having read the others.

Young: I believe the books are about the paranormal world. Am I correct?

A.D.:  Yes. I’ve always been intrigued with the “what if”s of the paranormal world. There are so many versions out there! So what if they were ALL right and all wrong? What if each religion had a small bit of it right? That’s what got my books going. The “what if”s.

Ghosts never scared me terribly since several of my family has what’s referred to as “second sight”. But I’ve always wondered why they would hang around. What would make a person give up their version of Heaven?

I also love the idea of an angel like Brad. A happy, loving personality that’s just a little bit busybody, a little bit jaded, a little bit tired and just a pinch of sneakiness. If I have a guardian angel, I want him to be like Brad.

Young: I presume Brad is an angel character in your book? Am I correct?

A.D.: That's correct.

Young: Can you give our readers a synopsis of "Welcome To Tremor"?

A. D.: Of course. Tremor

Synopsis:

What would you do if you were about to die and weren’t good enough for Heaven or bad enough for Hell? What if you were given three choices and only had a few days to decide what your future would be? What would you do? Being a ghost isn’t so bad, but being a ghost racing against the clock sucks—especially when, if you lose, you might end up in Hell. The countdown has started and Cin and Jess only have until someone decides to pull the plugs on their life support to decide what to do. Detective Bruce Miller of the Nashville Metro PD is just trying to do his job—and right now, his job is to find a rapist. The problem is, the victim is in the hospital and her doctor won’t let him near her. When a second victim is found raped and murdered, he knows his job is on the line. Then the trail leads him to a child sex ring and implicates the Chief of Police, and he knows he’s in trouble. Cinthia McRenolds was an ordinary girl living an ordinary life. At least, she was until she and her best friend Jess wind up in a little town called Tremor. Now they’re faced with deciding whether to return to brain-damaged bodies and try to do something good enough to get them into Heaven, reincarnate, or stay in Tremor. Not exactly an easy choice, especially after witnessing the Hell Parade that passes through Tremor on a regular basis.

Mya: Thank you Young for having me as your guest author today.

Young: My pleasure, Mya. It's always great to glimpse into the lives, passions and projects of my fellow Solstice authors. :)

Tell my readers about your books and projects you are currently working on?

Mya: My passion is writing, I've been creating stories and poetry since I was a child. I spends my free time reading just about anything I can get her hands on. I'm a romantic at heart and I love to create stories with unforgettable characters. I also like to travel. I've visited several Caribbean Islands, Mexico and Costa Rica. I'm currently working on my sixth novel.

Young: How exciting!

Mya: Currently I've two new releases published: At First Sight - it's a contemporary romance about dating in the modern world, published by Astraea Press, and Where There is Love, is a contemporary romance in which a woman struggles with past obstacles, ultimately faced with whether or not she will open her heart to love. This novel is published by Solstice Publishing. I'm excited to say that Astraea Press will be releasing my contemporary holiday paranormal romance on November 25, 2014 titled If You Believe. Due out in late January is The Calm After the Storm. This book is published by TouchPoint Press. This novel is a contemporary romance that is set within a backdrop of Hurricane Sandy. The story revolves around the idea of a utility worker from Georgia falling in love with a woman in New York.

Young: Give us a little insight into At First Sight.

Mya: Okay here it is: At First Sight

At First Sight

Excerpt:

Johnny’s was packed. Standing on line to place her order, Annie took in her surroundings. Just as the owner, Johnny, was coming over to take her order, something caught Annie’s eye. The guy near the window, he seemed familiar somehow. Where had she seen him before? He was eating dinner with a pretty brunette. He lifted his head to look at Annie as their eyes locked. On no! It was the guy from the mall, the one she bumped into. She quickly spun around, knocking right into the waitress who was carrying a tray of soft drinks.

Soda soaked her shirt and dripped onto the floor. The waitress was clearly annoyed and appeared like she would have loved to tell Annie off. Instead she rolled her eyes and ran to get a towel. If Annie thought she was embarrassed before, it was nothing compared to how she felt now. Every eye in the place was on her, including the guy from the mall. Helpless to do anything else, she grabbed some napkins and bent down to sop up some of the mess.

“It seems you have a knack for causing a scene everywhere you go.” It was his voice. The voice that filled her head with inappropriate thoughts, with longing. What was she thinking? Did she dare look up? His gaze was a magnet, forcing her to meet his eyes.

His eyes were a warmer brown than she had remembered, drawing her in.

“I...uh...”

“I’m joking. Here, let me help you with that.” He grabbed the napkins from her hand. The heat between them jolted her back. She moved quickly, surprised he could evoke such a reaction from her. Nobody had ever made her feel so exposed before. What was going on here? Annie felt foolish.

“I’m Shane. Shane Nicholls.” He extended his hand to her. They must have appeared to be quite the sight, bending over to clean up the mess while shaking hands.

“Annie.” Annie remembered her new rules of safety in the dating world. One of them was she would not reveal her last name or any other personal information until she was sure the guy wasn’t a stalker or anything.

“Annie. It suits you, I like it.” Annie had almost forgot about the woman waiting for Shane at the table near the window. She glanced over and took in a tight-lipped woman. It hit Annie that this woman was not the same stunning woman from the mall. Hmm, she had met his type before. This guy had “player” written all over him. She quickly brushed herself off and excused herself.

“Hey, Annie. Wait.” He reached for her hand. Annie forgot all about placing her order and made a beeline for the door. She didn’t look back. Well, Annie figured, it looked like it would be Chinese food tonight. At First Sight

Young: That's great Mya. How did you discover Solstice Publishing to publish your novel, Where There is Love?

Mya: I discovered Solstice by word of mouth from fellow authors. I heard about how wonderful it was to work with Solstice and researched the company, it seemed that my novel fit the criteria for the books Solstice represents. There was plenty of positive feedback from various sources and I felt that Solstice looked very professional. I submitted to Summer Solstice division and was very happy when I was offered a contract for Where There is Love. I recently submitted a manuscript, my first Young Adult fantasy book, Miranda’s Choice to the Solstice Shadows division and am thrilled to announce that I have signed another contract with Solstice Publishing.

Young: That is fabulous, Mya. This bring me to my next question; Where did your inspiration come from for Where There is Love? Was there a character that just had to be heard? Was there an event that inspired you to start writing?

Mya: My inspiration for this book came from my background as a special education teacher. I’m lucky to be in a profession in which I can make a difference in the lives of others. My main character, Mia is a young special education teacher who has always dreamed of helping her students reach for their dreams. Mia accepts a home-schooling position tutoring a troubled high school senior named Cassidy. Cassidy is misunderstood and her self-esteem has been lowered by her past experiences. I developed the character of Mia to help Cassidy overcome her weaknesses and reach for her dreams. In the process of writing this story, I thought that it would be great to have Mia benefit from her role of mentor. It came to me then and there that Mia should have some of her own demons to battle in this story. Mia finds herself in a trusting relationship with her neighbor, Jamie, a man that she has developed a strong friendship with. Will Mia open her heart to love and allow herself to heal from past obstacles?

Young: Will you read us an exercept from Where There is Love?

Mya: Here it is:

Where There is Love

  Excerpt

I would have done anything for that girl. Anything. I have dreamed of Mia, I have waited for Mia. I have loved Mia.

I can’t trust Mia.

I can’t get my hopes up again, only to be crushed by her. I couldn’t stand it.

She doesn’t allow herself to be happy. What has happened in her life to cause her to reject the people who love her, who care for her?

I remember the first time I ever laid eyes one her. The way she bumped into me, how embarrassed she was. I swear to this day that she is the most beautiful creature I’ve laid eyes on. Her slim build, dark hair and striking eyes. And that smile, that smile still warms my heart.

I went to see my grandma in Maine for the weekend once I realized that I was falling in love with Mia. My grandmother and I have always been close. She has been there for me through thick and thin ever since I was a child. I grew even closer to her as I was growing up, finding my way in life. For some reason, I always found it easiest to share my feelings with Grandma, the two of us like kindred spirits.

My feelings for Mia scared the life out of me. I told my grandmother that I didn’t want to risk getting hurt again and that Mia seemed so unsure of herself. She offered me a piece of advice that I will hold true to my heart forever: She placed her hand over my heart and said, “Go where there is love, surround yourself with love.” So I did, I went to Mia and tried to tell her how I felt, only to be brushed off with news of Josh coming back into the picture.

I’m happy with Danielle, she’s smart and she’s beautiful. Yeah, I’m going to give this a chance, I would be a fool not to.

But...I think...she’s not Mia.
My heart can’t take Mia.

She has the power to hurt me, and I can’t survive that again. IMG_0266-3 (1)

Young: Describe the genres in which you write (paranormal, contemporary, westerns, etc.) to the readers. Obviously you are writing in more than one genre or area, do you have a different process when you're writing different kinds of genres?

Mya: I started writing in the genre of contemporary romance. I have three novels that are in this genre. I also have a novel that is a paranormal holiday romance coming out soon. I recently signed with Solstice again, this time for a young adult fantasy. My process for writing doesn’t change when writing in different genres, but the research itself is quite different. Also, the target audience that I'm writing to and marketing to is different.

Young: Does your background in terms of job, family, geographic location, etc., play into your writing? What kind of research went into your story?

Mya: Yes, definitely. My background as a special education teacher enabled me to portray realistic components of the story, such as the chapter in which Mia utilizes multi-sensory strategies in her reading instruction. Throughout the course of my career, I have been trained in many different reading programs and learned techniques on my own as well. Many of the strategies that I discussed from story come from my own experience in teaching reading and writing. In my own teaching, I like to pull from a variety of sources and add my own strategies. I think I portrayed that experience in the tutoring scenes.

Young: I'm sure my readers will love to know your mind set or process as you sit down to write? Do you have a playlist going? Do you need complete silence? Are you a 6 am writer or an 11 pm writer?

Mya: Sometimes I have a playlist for certain scenes, but most of the time I write at the dining room table with the television on just for background noise. I also have a busy house, but I manage to write regardless of what is going on around me. I guess you could say that absolute silence doesn’t work well for me.

Young:  You lead a pretty busy life, how do you balance writing with work and/or personal life? Do you have any other projects you're working on?

Mya:  I mostly write during the weekends and breaks from school. On the weekdays my schedule is too busy to do any writing. I’m lucky to have summers off and other breaks during the school year to write. I have become skillful at marketing over the last several months. I have apps on my cell phone for my social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, my blog, Pinterest and Tumbler. You’d be surprised how easy it is to tweet or post while waiting for a train, standing on line at the store or even while watching television. My husband has said to me, “what are you doing on that phone?” countless times. :) IMG_0266-3 (1)

Young: Do you have any words of advice for aspiring writers?

Mya: If writing is a true passion of yours, don’t let anything or anyone stop you. The great thing about writing is that you get better as you continue to write. It’s important to have a support system in place, such as friends and family to help read your stories  and give advice about your writing. I’ve also found that it’s extremely important to reach out to fellow authors on Facebook to ask for guidance and help each other out. I have found that so many of the authors working at Solstice are amazing; there’s a real sense of community.

Young:  Tell us where readers can find you and your books ?

An interview with international bestselling author Kelly Abell

Saving Shenanigans Meg med

Young:    Welcome Kelly. Thank you for dropping by for a visit.  It is nice to have a chance to speak with an accomplished author, such as yourself. In your bio, you mention you have two publishers. Can you tell my readers about your writing and of course your beautiful self?

Kelly Abell (KB):    Thank you for having me on your blog, Young.

I write romance, romantic suspense, and paranormal romance. My aim is to write about gripping characters in tense situations that keep my readers turning the pages. As a member of the Florida Writer's Association, I also spend a great deal of time helping other writers through Writing Tips on my website.

Young:    What are your favorite pastimes when you're not writing or helping other writers?

KB:    When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending time with my husband of 30 years and my two college age children, when they find time. I live in Florida and enjoy all that the sunshine state brings; such as boating, fishing, beaches, theme parks, and more. My favorite pass time is reading (what a surprise!) I like Thrillers, Romantic Suspense, and Romantic Comedy.

Young:    Where can readers connect with you?

KB:    They're welcome to stop by and visit my website for current events; www.kellyabellbooks.com

I'm also on Facebook and Twitter;

my Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kelly-...

and my Twitter: @kellyabellbooks

Young:    You also mention that part of the proceeds fom Meg's Secret will be donated to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Why do you choose to donate to this organization?

KB:    I hope to raise awareness of this Silent Killer and the importance of early testing. When you have a chance please visit this site for more information on Ovarian Cancer. http://www.ovarian.org/

Young:    I'm sure my readers will like a synopsis of Meg's Secret. Can you give us a summary?

KB:    Sure.

Synopsis

Meg O’Banyon makes a mistake during her senior year in high school. She gets mixed up with football star Rowdy Rod Owens, and after one night of foolish passion, Rod, on his way to serve Uncle Sam, leaves her with a gift…one she knows her father will never approve of. Fearing his drunken rage, Meg flees on a Greyhound Bus with only twenty dollars in her pocket and a baby in her belly. Meg has struggled for ten years to keep food on the table for her and her daughter, Emma, and up until now has done okay. A visit to the doctor is about to change all that.

When she gets the news of her father’s death, Meg uses it as an opportunity to secure a future for Emma in case things don’t turn out as she hopes. As if dealing with her current burden isn’t enough, the sudden return of Rod Owens from Afghanistan sends Meg into a panic. She’s never told him about Emma.

Rod Owens is a jock with a passion for his country. Wanting to serve from the time he could carry a toy rifle, he dreams of an Army career. After being injured and released from the only career he’s ever known, Rod returns home to more than one surprise. The woman who’s haunted his dreams for years suddenly confronts him with two heart wrenching secrets. Rod must now determine if he can overcome the hurt and betrayal and fight for what he loves most.

Book two of the Saving Shenanigans series allows you to witness the strength and determination of the second O’Banyon sister, Meg, as she comes to terms with the secrets of her past, battles to survive a difficult present, and struggles to secure a hopeful future. Meg’s story is also an empowering one as she gains control of the “silent killer” Ovarian Cancer. All she needs now is the support of her family and the love of a good man...her man.

Young:    Appreciate you for taking the time to talk with me, Kelly. Come back and visit us soon.

KB:    Thank You for having me.

Young:    Ms. Kelly Abell has provided me an excerpt of Meg's Secret. Here it is folks;Saving Shenanigans Meg med

Chapter One

Meg rocked on the front porch swing late in the evening, the cool end of summer air swirling around her. She shivered, but not because of the breeze.

Mara, her sister, stepped outside carrying two wine glasses.

“Emma’s asleep, finally.” She handed Meg a glass of Merlot.

“Thanks. I’m bushed.”

“It’s been a long day. How you holding up?”

She nodded. “The pain’s tolerable.” Since contracting ovarian cancer, Meg struggled with daily abdominal pain. For a long while she didn’t even know what was wrong, attributing it to indigestion, or maybe even her gall bladder.

One of the reasons why this damn disease is called the silent killer.

She sighed. Now was not the time to dwell on her own problems. She had enough of that facing her in the immediate future. Her family needed her full attention right now. “I’m worried about Mabe,” she said, suddenly changing the subject.

Mara smiled. “Our sister’s tough. It’ll take more than a concussion to keep her down. Aaron took care of Toreni, so that’s done. Now we can keep Shenanigans, such that it is.”

“True. Boy, Aaron sure turned out to be a true blessing. I’m glad that mobster’s paid off, but Mabe won’t be happy once she finds out what Aaron’s done.”

Mara raised her wine glass in a mock toast. “From the lip lock I saw between them tonight? I think she’ll be okay.”

Meg raised an eyebrow. “Really? That’s awesome. She deserves some happiness.”

“I tried not to eavesdrop, but I was standing outside the door. I think I heard him ask her to marry him,” Mara remarked, raising her goblet again.

Meg clinked her glass to her sister’s, grinning. “Nuh uh...really? I’m so happy for her. I guess I was wrong about him.”

“Ya think?”

Meg nodded and glanced out into the night. She sensed her sister’s gaze. “What are you staring at?”

“You’ve not been yourself all day. What’s up?”

She frowned, pinching her nose with her fingers. What’s up, she asks? What’s up is I’m a liar. How do I tell my daughter Rod is her father? How do I tell him he has a daughter? What a mess.

“Meg?”

She sighed. “I saw Rod a few days ago.”

“What?” Mara twisted in her chair to face her sister. “What the hell is wrong with you? Why didn’t you say something sooner?”

“Uh, because we’ve been a little pre-occupied.”

Mara shoved her over and squeezed in next to her on the swing. “Okay, spill it.”

Meg’s eyes moistened. She swiped fiercely at her cheeks. There’d been too many tears lately. She explained how she’d seen Rod at Shenanigans when she’d stopped there with Emma.

“Oh, wow. I bet you nearly crapped your pants.”

She faced her sister. “Ya think?” She echoed Mara’s earlier statement, then laughed bitterly.

“What’s he doing back?”

“War injury. Wounded leg.” Meg shifted on the swing. “I felt so bad for him. The Army was all he ever dreamed of. I guess that’s over now.”

“Did he say what happened?”

She nodded. “He said he took some shrapnel from a car bomb. I didn’t know what to say, Mara. I was completely dumbfounded.”

“I’m sure. Did he see Emma in the car?” Mara wrapped an arm around her sister.

Emotion overwhelmed her again. “Of course,” she choked out, dragging a tissue from her skirt pocket. “What am I going to do? I know I was wrong not to tell him about Emma, but I thought it wouldn’t matter. I never expected to see him again.”

Mara sighed and sipped her wine, pushing the swing with her foot. Meg rested her head on her sister’s shoulder.

“Do you think he suspected?”

She rolled her head side to side. “Nah...I doubt it. We were only with him a few minutes. He looked into the car, spoke to her. I introduced him as my friend, Mr. Owens.”

Mara rested her head on the back of the swing, gazed up at the ceiling. “You’re going to have to tell him.”

Meg cried into her tissue. “I know.”

“Tell who what?” The man’s voice came out of the dark.

Meg jerked so suddenly her head collided with her sister’s chin.

“Ow,” Mara exclaimed, rubbing her injured jaw. She twisted to see Rod standing on the sidewalk.

“Is this a bad time? Not too late is it?”

“You just scared the shit out of Meg,” Mara grumbled.

“I’m sorry.” He chuckled. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I was so surprised to see you in town the other day, Meg. I’ve been meaning to stop by before now, but I figured y’all might be a little busy.” He glanced at his watch. “I was out walking and heard you ladies talking so I thought I’d drop by. I guess I really should’ve considered the time.”

“Nonsense,” Mara told him. “Come on up.”

He hobbled over, parking his hip on the edge of the porch. Meg gripped her sister’s hand. Her heart warmed at the reassuring squeeze she received in return. How in the hell did I ever get myself into this mess? Who’d have believed he would have come home to Monticello? What are the odds?

She glanced at her sister, who got the signal.

“I’m going to go put some ice on my jaw. You kids have fun catching up.”

“Good to see you again, Mara,” he said. “Hope to see you around town.”

She nodded and gave him a finger wave before going inside. The screen door slapped shut behind her.

Meg couldn’t remember feeling more awkward. With her sister gone, she was left on her own to face this man she’d once loved. A man she’d have given her heart and soul to. A man she had a daughter with. Oh, God. She thought back to their high school prom night and smiled.

“You just drifted back to our high school days, didn’t you? I saw it in your eyes.”

She glanced at the handsome man in front of her. He wore jeans and an avocado green T-shirt with the words Go Army in white letters. His blond hair was longer than she remembered. He’d always worn a buzz cut for football season, but even after that, he’d never let it curl over his collar. She liked it. His eyes were the kind of blue that changed hue depending on what he wore. Tonight they were a deep blue-green, like the ocean.

“I must have been the only girl home by midnight on prom night,” she commented, still smiling.

Rod whistled. “Yeah, boy. Your father put the fear of God in me. I’m sorry for your loss, by the way.”

She glanced away from his handsome face out into the yard. “Thanks.”

“Can you come down here, sit by me?”

She swiveled her head back to face him, her heart racing. Getting close to a man she’d once loved so openly was not a good idea—especially when she had news that would rock his world.

He patted the thigh of his right leg. “I’m still having a hard time negotiating steps.”

Guilt swept through her. Jeez, how selfish can I be? This wonderful man was injured doing God knows what in Afghanistan. The least I can do is sit with him for a minute.

She joined him on the edge of the porch. “Does your leg hurt much?”

“Only when I move,” he quipped, the edges of his mouth curving into the sexy half-smile she remembered so well.

“I’m so sorry you were hurt. You think you’ll make a full recovery?”

He sighed, tapping his cane on the ground. “This is as good as it gets, I’m afraid. I may get a little more mobility back if I keep exercising, but I’m stuck with my metal buddy here.

Her glance swept from his cane to his strong rugged face. “That sucks.”

He reached for her hand. It was like grasping a bear paw, large and warm. “Where did you disappear to, Meg?” He leaned the cane against the wooden decking to grab her other hand, twisting to face her. “Your father came storming into my house just before I left for boot camp, demanding to know where you were. I was as shocked as anyone to learn you’d run away. I had to leave worried sick something had happened to you.”

She sucked in a breath. He really cared about me. The shock of that revelation set her back. She knew how she felt about him, but never realized the depth of his feelings for her. She was pregnant, so she ran. She was afraid of her father’s reaction, sure, but she also loved Rod enough not to ruin his future. Was that fair? Now she didn’t think so, but at the time she was a scared young girl.

He surprised her when he touched her face. “After Mom wrote and told me Mabe knew you were safe, I stopped worrying as much, but Meg…” He slipped his hand behind her neck, edging her closer.

Her pulse raced, her palms beaded with sweat. Oh God. I should stop this.

“I can’t tell you how glad I was when you said you weren’t married that day I saw you at Shenanigans. You had a daughter, so I automatically thought...”

Oh shit...Don’t go there...please.

“You were all I thought about.”

Meg blinked. The conversation took a completely different direction than she was expecting. She held her breath, listening to this man whom she’d once loved so passionately.

“It was your face I dreamed of at night. You were the reason I fought so hard to live after the bombing. I told myself if I could get back to the states, I’d do whatever it took to find you. And here you are.”

She exhaled, her heart warming to his words, but her brain set off wild warning bells in her head. In the past she’d wanted to hear those words, to know how he’d felt about her. But now...things were so different.

Rod held her gaze, his soft blue eyes staring straight into her soul. He leaned in, capturing her lips in a soft gentle kiss. Saving Shenanigans Mabe small
