Heather Osborne (H.O.): My latest novel, The Fairest of Them, was released on May 21st 2015. It is the second in the Rae Hatting Mysteries series, the first being a short story entitled Crushed Gardenias. Its a crime novel about a serial killer who has an obsession with Grimms fairy tales.

The Fairest of Them (Rae Hatting Mysteries, 2)

Blurb:

Once upon a time, there was a murder...

Detective Luke Thompson is a hero cop, with a string of solved serial killer cases under his belt. He comes to California, thinking he can disappear quietly into the forests, isolated from the rest of the world. His expertise is called upon to help with a mysterious serial killer, dumping bodies dressed like fairy tale characters in the woods outside of Mendocino County. With the help of a profiler, Luke finally gets the break he needs, as well as finding romance for himself. Tragedy strikes, and Luke is left despondent, unable to carry on as a detective. Can a fiery redhead from the FBI help him out of the slump?

Determined to leave the life of solving unsolvable homicides behind, Special Agent Rae Hatting tries to settle into a normal life with her adopted daughter, Grace. However, her reputation precedes her, and Rae finds herself back in the fray, called upon to help solve a series of gruesome fairy tale style murders in California. Her only obstacle is Detective Luke Thompson. Broody, stubborn, and an all-around pain in the ass, the pair must work together before another victim ends up never finding their happily ever after.

EBook - The Fairest of Them_FINAL

Teaser:

The trail led to a clearing surrounded by redwood trees. They provided shade from the harsh afternoon July sun, their shadows dancing on the ground. In the very center of the ring, a woman lay, her hands folded over her abdomen. Blonde ringlets framed her face and her vivid blue eyes were wide open, staring blankly into the abyss. The slender form was draped in a pink dress, with lace accents at the sleeves. Over it, she wore a stark white pinafore. Hikers had stumbled on the eerily staged scene in MacKerricher State Park, and called in the authorities.

Yellow crime tape was wound around the statuesque trees. It was as if they were standing guard, tall and silent. Upon closer investigation, a slim book was discovered, poking out of the pocket of the starched pinafore. It was quickly bagged and tagged as evidence before the body, carefully sealed in a black bag, was transported to the coroners office. I turned my face upwards, gazing at the majestic trees and wishing they could talk. If they could, my job would have been infinitely easier.

I had come to the small town in Mendocino County, California, early in 2003, with no intentions of taking up another job on the force. My legacy was safely tucked away in Dallas, Texas, after I had solved a series of prostitute rapes and mutilations. The newspapers had lauded me as a hero. The whole situation made me feel completely sick, not good for a detective. We were meant to be impartial, and I had found myself blaming the working girls I had so often warned about the dangers of streetwalking.

The circumstances leading me to resume a position as a detective with the sheriffs department were not something I wished to discuss with anyone. I would simply change the topic when brought up in conversation. I supposed that it was some sort of calling, unable to let me rest until I helped as many people as possible.

I drove back to the station, radio off, the red-taped evidence bag taunting me on the passenger seat. I knew what it contained, but I was reluctant to confirm it. I turned the bag over to the technicians at the lab and returned to my office with an off-hand reminder to let me know what they found. The book would be swabbed, submitted to latent fingerprint testing, and returned to my desk with the same report as last time: no conclusive trace evidence found. As I predicted, it was what happened. I retrieved the book, setting it down on my desk in the plastic covering.

Snapping on a pair of latex gloves, I ran my hand over the leather cover. It was a first edition, like the rest. I carefully cracked the cover and the black print stood out on the creamy ivory paper: Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Beneath it, penned in perfect cursive were the words: She should not have taken what did not belong to her. I slammed the book shut in frustration. The taunts were becoming more and more specific as time went on.

Throwing the gloves in my trashcan, I decided to take a walk and see if Dr. Sabine Lawson had found anything on the body. The glimmer of hope had long since faded that she actually would. The curvy, African-American coroner was meticulous in her reports, so I doubted she would be even down to the womans breasts at this point. I had to do something to settle my nerves, though, or I would snap.

The squeak of the metal swinging doors signaled my entry into the disinfectant-scented room. I grinned at the sight of Sabine in her element. She wore her hair in narrow braids, pulled back in a no-nonsense ponytail. Her skin was the color of coffee with cream. There were many days I lusted after Sabine, but she made it clear to me from day one she was committed to her job. There was no room for torrid affairs with wild cowboys, as she put it.

Whatcha got for me, Doc? I went through the motions of putting on another pair of gloves to avoid Sabines scowl.

Nothing yet, and you know it. Youre restless, cher. The drawl of her New Orleans accent came out like liquid silk.

I leaned against the counter and watched her work. Damn straight. I cant wrap my head around this guy. He was sticking to the classics, and now this jump. Why Goldilocks?

Sabine was used to listening to my ramblings and offering her interpretations. Perhaps she merely fit the profile of that character?

Hes not like that though. He plans this all to the letter. Every detail. Stalks these women for weeks! I jiggled my leg anxiously. The change in the killers modus operandi rattled me more than it should.

Calm yourself. She began to speak into a microphone positioned above her work station. Female victim appears roughly 20 to 25 years of age based on bone development and pelvic placement. She has never given birth. There are signs of sexual trauma, but no ligature marks on her wrists or ankles. A small needle mark to the neck indicates that the victim may have been drugged. Sending samples of blood and urine to the lab for further analysis.

I interrupted her. No trace of semen, I take it?

She frowned at me. No, just like the others. Sabine carefully made her opening incision in the abdomen of the victim, and drew back the flesh.  She busied herself with the remainder of her work, and I knew I was dismissed without her saying so. Pinging the gloves into a bin by the door, I walked out.

EBook - The Fairest of Them_FINAL

Young: What other books/short stories have you written?

H.O.: I have three short stories (Crossing Paths, Verboten, and Crushed Gardenias), three novellas (Illicit Corruption Volumes 1&2, and Tam Lin), and two novels (The Soldiers Secret, and The Fairest of Them).

Young: Do you publish in e-book, print, or both?

H.O.: My two novels are in ebook and print, but the others are just in ebook format.

Young: Where can readers find your books?

H.O.: You can find my books on Amazon.

Young: What do you think are the biggest challenges for the type of writing that you do?

H.O.: I work in different genres, so that can be challenging. I try to maintain an element of romance, but writing crime is far different than writing historical fiction.

Young: How did you get started in writing?

H.O.: I have been writing little stories as far back as I can remember. It seemed a natural, creative outlet for me.

Young: Where and How can readers get in touch with you?

H.O.: Im on a variety of social media platforms, but I also can be reached via email at heatherosborneauthor@gmail.com.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HAOsborne

Twitter: https://twitter.com/hosborneauthor

Google +: https://plus.google.com/u/1/+HeatherO...

Blog: https://heatherosborneauthor.wordpres...

Young: So with your latest work released/or being released, what comes next? What can we expect from you in the future?

H.O.: I have three publications in the works. My next release will be Misfortune, the third book in the Rae Hatting Mysteries series, coming out in November of this year. I am also working on another historical romance called Floras Prince, due out next year. In addition, I have Illicit Corruption Volume 3, but Im not sure when I will be publishing that.

Young: How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

H.O.: I always used to say that most of my female main characters are me, but it different form! Im not sure how much of my life experience is evident in my writing. I suppose since I moved from California to Scotland, readers can see Scottish influences in my books, especially Tam Lin, and my upcoming release, Floras Prince.

Young: Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

H.O.: I try to set publication date goals, because if I didnt, I would never get anything done. However, until then, I mainly go with the flow, and write when the mood strikes me.

Crushed Gardenias cover

Crushed Gardenias (Rae Hatting Mysteries, 1)

Blurb:

Special Agent Rae Hatting has been sent to a small town in Colorado to investigate the disappearance of young girls from several surrounding states. What she finds is not at all what she expected.

Initially submitted to the "Bloody Scotland" crime short story contest in 2014.

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25054679-crushed-gardenias

Young: What is your routine once you start writing a book?

H.O.: Again, I write when the muse strikes, so to speak. I have to work around family and other commitments so I take the opportunity to write when I can.

Young: What about you in general? What is it that makes you tick? Makes you you? Things you like to do and what prompted you into writing?

H.O.: Lets see, I moved to Scotland in 2009 from California. I met my husband online and we clicked, so I decided to take the plunge! We have a beautiful son, Alex, who keeps me on my toes. When Im not writing, Im usually spending time with him. I have a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Victimology, and I volunteer with Victim Support Scotland. Also, Im a member of two local theatre companies, so I definitely keep busy!

Young: Among your own books, have you a favourite book? Favourite Hero or Heroine?

H.O.: I do love The Soldiers Secret. It was amazing to write about a woman dressing as a man to fight in the American Civil War. I suppose the main character, Emma, is my favorite heroine.

TheSoldier'sSecret

Young: Where do you see yourself in five years?

H.O.: Rich and famous? Haha! Wouldnt that be nice? Im probably going to still be writing, hopefully branching out into screenplays.

Young: What kind of research do you when writing one of your works?

H.O.: It depends on the genre. Crime is relatively easy for me because I have a degree in Criminology. Historical romance is a bit more challenging, and I often feel like Im doing more research than writing at times! I have a lot of second hand knowledge, but I find the internet very useful for quick information.

Young: What does your significant other think of your writing?

H.O.: Good question! He is supportive, but up until literally a week ago, he had never read anything Ive written.

Young: Do you ever ask them for advice or ideas to go into your works?

H.O.: I sometimes run things by him, but mostly for clarity purposes. Hes pretty good at telling me when something doesnt work for the plot.

Young: Have you ever experienced Writer's Block?  If so how did you work through it?

H.O.: Oh yes! When I do, I try to work on other projects. I edit for people, and I review books for Readers Favorite, so I always have something to keep me busy!

Young: Who are some of your favourite authors to read?

H.O.: I havent had much time for reading for pleasure lately, but I do admire Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. I also enjoy reading Anne Rice and Nora Roberts. Of course, I idolize some of the more famous historical romance authors, like Bertrice Small and Kathleen Woodiwiss.

Young: Anything else you'd like to tell our readers?

H.O.: This month Im donating all my royalties from The Soldiers Secret to a kickstart campaign for a documentary about female historical reenactors, so any support would be appreciated. I will also be donating all my royalties in November to the Childrens Heart Foundation in honor of my son, who has a congenital heart defect.

Young: Lastly do you have any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

H.O.: Just keep swimming! Its not easy, the self-publishing world, but its very worth it! Remember, you cannot please everyone, so take a chance! You never know what you might be missing. Also, get a good editor!

The Vikings Have Landed!

Got Vikings? How about thirteen of them, all well researched as well as (ahem) well hung, all sexy as hell, and all ready to entertain you this summer?

If this sounds enticing, check out the newly released anthology , edited by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Delilah Devlin. At only $0.99, it's definitely easy to "plunder" (and it's free if you're a Kindle Unlimited subscriber.) Best of all from my point of view, the Vikings of this collection aren't just pillaging coastal villages. They're exploring, acting as mercenaries and merchants and sometimes just going about their lives on shore. Here's the official description:

Vikings. Fierce warriors who terrified all in their path as they raided and marauded, enslaved and murdered during Europe's Dark Ages.

But these rough men from a rugged land were also sailors, explorers, craftsmen, and highly sought after mercenaries.

Conquests: An Anthology of Smoldering Viking Romance will transport you to the realm of fantasy where such fearsome and loyal men are relentless potent lovers. Whether the lady of the keep demands a few stolen hours of pleasure with a captured Viking warrior or the handsome Northman is the one seducing his captive, you will find plenty of lusty adventures in settings as far-flung as Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Byzantium, Moorish Spain and the New World.

An Interview with Author - Clarissa Cartharn

Young: Welcome to In The Harem,  Clarissa. Before further a do - Tell us about your Latest Book/Books about to be release? Release Date? And can you give us a teaser?

Clarissa Cartharn (C.C.): My latest/current work is titled:

A Jar of Dreams

(Teaser)

When Eric Tanner, an assassin, is targeted to be murdered by his former employer, he seeks refuge in the house of a blind woman, Anne Mullen.  But when he starts to fall in love with Anne, he must do everything he can to protect her from the world hes come from.

Eric Tanner is an assassin on the run when his employer turns on him and takes a hit on him instead. He doesnt understand why until towards the end of the book. While on the run he meets Anne Mullen, a blind woman. He realizes he can hide in her house for a while until he can figure his next move. What he doesnt bet on is falling in love with her and his desire to set up house and family with her. What ensues is a battle between his love for Anne and his dark past.

I got the idea of writing this story while reading an article about a homeless woman hiding out in a mans apartment in Japan. She had successfully remained undetected for a year, I believe (Im rusty on the details now).  Although, her story didnt finish so romantically because she got charged for trespass.

Young: What other books/short stories have you written, Clarissa?

C.C.: I have at least five other romances to my name. Each of them utterly different and each one inspired by something or the other I had read or experienced.

Winters End: About a widow trying to deal with the small village rumors of her mysterious neighbor and the absurd proposition the old woman next door gives her.

Red Collar: the plight of a young woman who reluctantly bends to the business of sex escorts in order to feed her family.

Scent of Roses: a light-hearted, comedic take on two people who befriend each other as they try to wing it through a documentary akin to The Bachelors TV reality show, only to realize that they have truly fallen in love with each other.

Claimed: A dystopian romance about a society on the brinks of chaos due to the divisions between the rich and the poor until the latter find hopes in a chimera, a man inoculated with panther and eagle genes and thus attributing him with those properties while as a fetus. He is the reluctant hero who battles between standing up for his people and taking up arms against the aristocratic family of the woman he loves.

Affairs & Atonement: A young man shuns his new bride because of the pressures from his family, only to realize that when she does leave him, he cant entirely forget her. He searches for her for eleven long years. But when he does finally find her, his errors come back to haunt him and she isnt as keen on him as she was when they had married.

Young: Do you publish in e-book, print, or both?

C.C.: I print in both forms.

Young: Where can readers find your books?

C.C.: Youll definitely find them on Amazon:

Young: So with your latest work released/or being released, what comes next? What can we expect from you in the future?

C.C.: Captive

Released in late June, 2015

Captive

C.C.: A Jar of Hearts

The sequel to A Jar of Dreams

Release date: late August

A Jar of Hearts

Young: Among your own books, have you a favourite book? Favourite Hero or Heroine?

C.C.: Is that possible? (laughs) Its like picking between your kids. You love them all. No, I cant play favourites.  Shhh... Eric Tanner of A Jar of Dreams is my favourite hero this month, but dont let my other heroes hear it. (winks)

Young: What kind of research do you when writing one of your works?

C.C.: A lot... a lot (rolls eyes). While writing A Jar of Dreams I had to research on blind people and how they conducted their normal, everyday activities. I was completely blown away with how much technology has advanced and benefited them. There are for example apps available to let them know what color a shirt is for instance. Blind people these days arent as disabled as some people think they are. They are well and truly independent, leading absolutely normal lives.

Young: What does your significant other think of your writing?

C.C.: Nothing much, Im afraid (grins). He supports me and gives me the kudos when I need it. But has he read one of my works? No. And I doubt he ever will.

Young: Lastly do you have any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

C.C.: I read once Go after your dreams, no matter how attainable others think it is. Theres some truth in that. If you really want to be a writer, itll happen.

Having said that, I am also my harshest critic. I just believe the moment anyone who starts to think that theyve become the best writers; they should also throw down their pen and walk. For what is there after becoming the best?

Strive and strive on, I say. Theres always something to improve on, something to better. And you cant find a better competitor than yourself.

 Upon Your Return

Excerpt:

She smiled. It was so like him to make light of a bad situation. She remembered she still hadn't acknowledged that he knew her. Perhaps he did not recognize her? I would like to thank you, Monsieur, for your intervention.

There is no need. I did what any man would have done.

Not every man would aid just any woman. I should not have accepted his offer to dance. Before I had a chance to stop him, he dragged me in here. I should not have trusted him.

Don't punish yourself over it. But, it's true that some strangers can have ulterior motives.

But, not all?

No, I suppose occasionally someone means well.

Would you fit into that category? One that has no ulterior motives?

Perhaps when I first came into the alcove

His eyes beneath his mask seemed to bore into her very soul. In a way, she knew she was toying with Grant, that he probably thought she didn't know it was him, and was appalled that she would flirt with simply any man. What was he feeling? Her heart raced in a strange, exhilarating way, and her breaths were more shallow. If he did know it was her, did he care?

But, not now? she teased.

Now I just might have ulterior motives

Oh?

The alcove curtain was closed so there was no reason to fear being seen. A part of her didn't care if they were caught without her having a chaperone. The fact that she wasn't supposed to be here because of her mourning period added to the risk. It was enticing. She closed the distance between them by approaching him, placing her hands on his chest. I want to thank you.

I told you it wasn't necessary. His voice sounded suddenly husky.

I think it is. Their lips were inches apart and they stood that way for what seemed an eternity. When Fara thought she would go mad with the waiting, he lowered his lips to hers, softly questing. Their mouths lingered, lost in sensation and the essence of one another until finally he pulled away. Through their masks and the silence of the alcove, there was an element Fara couldn't quite pinpoint. Temptation perhaps? She wanted to give in to the unspoken need, but it would be idiocy to act on it.

Grant whispered, Mademoiselle Bellamont, you are a tease.

He had accused her of it before, but now she could only sigh. You would know if I was teasing, Capitaine.

Excerpt:

Chloe was charmed further when Gabriel stopped her beneath a tree, bent to pluck a lavender flower and placed it into her rarely pinned up hair. Thank you, she murmured.

How can anyone resist such a picture? he said in accented English. There was a bright quality to his eyes that she wondered about, but he reached his hand out to her.

She took his offered hand. Her breath caught when he lifted her hand to his lips in the ancient gesture of respect. Even through the fine material of the glove, she could feel the brush of his lips over the surface of her hand. His eyes were trained on hers, and she could not look away. There was no denying the man had done it well. But, what was more compelling was the fact that his steady gaze made her want to press her lips to his. She briefly entertained it, despite the fact that it was so wrong of her. How much that would shock him. He was utterly proper most of the time. But, she sensed an untamed quality to Gabriel as well, that perhaps he was not driven by propriety always, that he might be compelled by something else at times.

She imagined leaning forward, raising her mouth in invitation, waiting for him to kiss her. Would he do that? She could not be sure. In her dreams he would lower his mouth to hers, move his lips moderately over hers until she opened to him. He would band his arm around her back to draw her closer, so close that she couldnt remember who she was. There was only Gabriel.

Chloe leaned forward without meaning to, and Gabriels gaze dropped to her mouth. His eyes became very dark, and the rapid thud of her heart against her chest was unnerving. And it happened so swiftly she had no time to react. He drew her to him and set his lips to hers. On a confused breath, she opened her mouth. Their tongues danced gently. His kiss was so compelling and she blinked when he quickly drew away.

Forgive me, he whispered. You did not ask.

She opened her mouth to protest, then thought better of it. He had no idea how wanton her thoughts had been.

Upon Your Love

Excerpt:

Mademoiselle Hill, do you wish to dance?

Startled, she looked up at the man, this stranger named Christian, his dark eyes drawing her in once more. And yet, there was something in his gaze that she recognized. She wasnt quite sure what it was, but suddenly he didnt feel like a stranger at all.

            Only for appearances, of course.

Oh. Yes, of course. Adrienne cursed herself for being weak, for letting a handsome face scramble her brain. When he took her hand in his firm grasp and led her to the center of the room, her breath caught. He positioned them effortlessly, a hand over her back and another cupping her own hand, and before she knew it they began to spin. With every dip and turn, her gaze rested on his face, his intense eyes swallowing her whole. As his legs brushed her flowing, light blue silk skirt with a lace overlay and white ribbons adorning its seams, her chest got ever closer to his, the band of his arm pulling her tighter against his body, and she forgot her need to be independent.

Lost in his pleasant male scent, she had no power to protest when his mouth brushed gently across hers. As he lifted his head a moment later, she could only stare at him, waiting, but she had no idea what she waited for. He had stopped dancing as well.

Forgive me for the intrusion, Mademoiselle. I simply thought

Her lips still tingled where hed touched her. You thought what? she asked, her voice husky now.

Mandrean Revenge by Rival Gates

Author Rival Gates

was born in Port Huron, MI and moved to a suburb of Toronto, Canada at age 5 due to his fathers work as an editor.  He was educated through high school in Canada and then returned to the United States for college at Michigan State University.  Rival began working on this series of books at age 13 and spent his life honing the stories to be just right.  His first book, Quest for the Red Sapphire drew excellent reviews and was followed up by his second book, The Sapphire Crucible which was received even better.  Now Mr. Gates has published his third book, Mandrean Revenge and plans to carry his readers along on the battle tested trail of Linvin Grithinshield.  His story awaits.

Mandrean Revenge

(Synopsis)

It has been more than 2 years since Linvin Grithinshield returned from his life altering quest with the Red Sapphire as his prize.  Apart from surviving the regular assassination attempts he thought life had returned to normal.  Far to the north in the Mandrean Empire, however, trouble was festering.  In spite of Linvins best efforts, Lord Mandrean the 13th survived their confrontation and has been plotting his reprisal.  With his empire on the verge of revolt he needs a show of force to display his dominance.  Dispatching Linvin in front of his subjects would fill that role most handsomely.  With the help of his evil Necromancer, Mandrean kidnaps Linvins Uncle Anvar.  The elderly elf is the closest family Linvin has remaining and has been a father figure to him for much of his life.  The emperor promises to release Anvar only after Linvin has surrendered himself for execution.  Though Mandreans word has slight credibility, Linvin is given a terrible decision to make.  With little choice Linvin sees no other option but to set out for the empire.  He cannot delay as Anvars life will expire at the first frost of fall.  That will become more troubling by the obstacles he faces along the way.

Mandrean & Necromancer

(Excerpt)

What can I do to be of service, Sire?

Mandrean leaned forward. I want to know what you have

found out about the staff for the Blue Sapphire. I charged you with

finding it some time ago. Having found its mate in the red staff it

should pose no problem for you.

That being such a simple task, I suppose you think I should

have found it by now? Necromancer quipped. But you fail to

remember that the only reason we located the red staff in the first

place was because an agent told me that Dirk Grithinshield had it

in Sartan. That was a stroke of luck. Such luck does not happen

twice. Surrender your quest.

Dont be a fool. I could no more surrender my quest than I

could my right hand. The stick you made me does not give me full

access to the Blue Sapphires powers.

That stick, Necromancer defended, gives you nearly all the

ability of equally the most powerful magic in the world you could

possess. No one other than I could have made you that stick. Be

thankful for what you have been given.

But that still does not give me the power I need to defeat

Linvin Grithinshield.

The blue staff wont either. It will only make your magic equal

to Grithinshields. Your magic will just cancel each other out. The

colors are opposites in the magical hierarchy. Did you not learn

that in your battle in the Valley of Broken Soldiers? A fight would

come down to your strength against his, your will against his and

your skill against his. If you could be honest with yourself for one

moment, you would admit that you will never be his equal there.

Necromancer paused while Mandrean seethed. He returned to

antagonism after reading his masters expressions. Why keep

pressing the issue with the half-elf? What? Is that stomach wound

still hurting? If not for me, you would be a corpse.

Mandrean erupted. And you waited long enough to heal me. I

was nearly dead. He dismissed the servants tending the fire and

swam to the edge of the bath near the wizard. How long did you

wait? Hmm? How much of my blood did you let spill before you

saved my life? You waited as long as you could in hope that I was

dead, didnt you? Any longer and my men would have thought you

didnt want me to live. In fact, if I had not been awake to order you

to save me, I think you would have let me expire right then.

Necromancer smiled with a wicked expression only he could

make. Of course, I was eager for you to die. Necromancer said it

in a deep, monotone voice. Its a shame you bleed so slowly. I

was nearly rid of you. As for that wound, even my magic cannot

heal another person. I could only repair some of the physical

damage Linvin inflicted. Your lack of permanent healing is

influenced more by your flimsy body.

The words shook Mandrean to his roots. He maintained a front

of anger to cover his distress. Oh no, Necromancer, you will

never be rid of me. I will make your life as horrible and demeaning

as I possibly can without end.

Necromancer chuckled under his breath and knelt by his lord.

You are wrong, and you know it, he whispered. I have all the

time that will ever be. And I have something you do not possess

despite all of your possessions. Patience.

Deep inside Mandrean knew his wizards words to be true but

wouldnt admit it even in his mind. He rose from the tub and

donned a robe. Still dripping wet, he approached his underling.

Mandrean bent down to bring his face directly in front of

Necromancers. You say youre patient, but youre not. You want

me dead so badly its eating you up inside. I know you just as you

think you know me. You wanted Grithinshield to murder me. The

fact that he failed is tormenting you day after day.

Necromancer looked away during the speech and then focused

on the emperor.

The only thing tormenting me is your minute intellect.

Say you are a spineless coward who cant do things

himselfSay it, Mandrean ordered as he stepped back.

Necromancer stood and looked Mandrean in the eyes. Very

well, Sire. You are a spineless coward who cant do things

himself.

Not me, idiot! Say Im a spineless coward, Mandrean raged.

But I just told you that you are a spineless coward. If your

grace has forgotten, I would gladly tell him again.

The master lost his temper and threw a stool across the room.

He stood by Necromancer shaking from his anger in frustration at

not being able to let it out at the wizard.

Now, Mandrean bellowed as he began to circle the albino,

you didnt help Grithinshield by any chance, did you? He paused

and heard nothing in reply. I didnt think so, Mandrean said with

sarcasm. Because if you had helped Linvin kill me, that would

violate our little arrangement and present serious repercussions for

you.

Necromancer did not speak. He merely looked away. Mandrean

found the silence more infuriating than the rude comments the

servant normally made.

A Chat with Author Christoph Fischer (Part Two)

CHRISTOPH FISCHER

Short Biography:

Christoph Fischer was born in Germany, near the Austrian border, as the son of a Sudeten-German father and a Bavarian mother. Not a full local in the eyes and ears of his peers he developed an ambiguous sense of belonging and home in Bavaria. He moved to Hamburg in pursuit of his studies and to lead a life of literary indulgence. After a few years he moved on to the UK where he now lives in a small town in West Wales.  He and his partner have three Labradoodles to complete their family.

Christoph worked for the British Film Institute, in Libraries, Museums and for an airline. The Luck of The Weissensteiners was published in November 2012; 'Sebastian' in May 2013 and 'The Black Eagle Inn' in October 2013. "Time To Let Go" , his first contemporary work was published in May 2014, and Conditions in October 2014. His medical thriller "The Healer" was released in January 2015 and his latest historical novel In Search of a Revolution in March 2015.

He has written several other novels which are in the later stages of editing and finalisation.

Christoph Fischer portraiture

The Luck of the Weissensteiners (Three Nations Trilogy Book 1)

In the sleepy town of Bratislava in 1933 a romantic girl falls for a bookseller from Berlin. Greta Weissensteiner, daughter of a Jewish weaver, slowly settles in with the Winkelmeier clan just as the developments in Germany start to make waves in Europe and re-draws the visible and invisible borders. The political climate in the multifaceted cultural jigsaw puzzle of disintegrating Czechoslovakia becomes more complex and affects relations between the couple and the families. The story follows them through the war with its predictable and also its unexpected turns and events and the equally hard times after.
But this is no ordinary romance; in fact it is not a romance at all, but a powerful, often sad, Holocaust story. What makes The Luck of the Weissensteiners so extraordinary is the chance to consider the many different people who were never in concentration camps, never in the military, yet who nonetheless had their own indelible Holocaust experiences. This is a wide-ranging, historically accurate exploration of the connections between social location, personal integrity and, as the title says, luck.

Sebastian (Three Nations Trilogy Book 2)

Sebastian is the story of a young man who has his leg amputated before World War I. When his father is drafted to the war it falls on to him to run the family grocery store in Vienna, to grow into his responsibilities, bear loss and uncertainty and hopefully find love.

Sebastian Schreiber, his extended family, their friends and the store employees experience the golden days of pre-war Vienna and the timed of the war and the end of the Monarchy while trying to make a living and to preserve what they hold dear.
Fischer convincingly describes life in Vienna during the war, how it affected the people in an otherwise safe and prosperous location, the beginning of the end for the Monarchy, the arrival of modern thoughts and trends, the Viennese class system and the end of an era.
As in the first part of the trilogy, The Luck of The Weissensteiners we are confronted again with themes of identity, Nationality and borders. The step back in time made from Book 1 and the change of location from Slovakia to Austria enables the reader to see the parallels and the differences deliberately out of the sequential order. This helps to see one not as the consequence of the other, but to experience them as the momentary reality as it must have felt for the people at the time.

The Black Eagle Inn (Three Nations Trilogy Book 3)

The Black Eagle Inn is an old established Restaurant and Farm business in the sleepy Bavarian countryside outside of Heimkirchen.  Childless Anna Hinterberger has fought hard to make it her own and keep it running through WWII. Religion and rivalry divide her family as one of her nephews, Markus has got her heart and another nephew, Lukas got her ear. Her husband Herbert is still missing and for the wider family life in post-war Germany also has some unexpected challenges in store.

Once again Fischer tells a family saga with war in the far background and weaves the political and religious into the personal. Being the third in the Three Nations Trilogy this book offers another perspective on war, its impact on people and the themes of nations and identity.

Young:  So with your latest work released/or being released, what comes next? What can we expect from you in the future?

A.A.S.: Intriguing stories! Im about to finish a novel, but I dont know when its going to be published.

Young:  How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

A.A.S.: Life and the people I love give birth to inspiration. The stories I write are the oxygen I breathe.

Young: Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

A.A.S.: Twice a week I write short stories to improve my writing skills and I usually do it in, during the nights.

Young: What is your routine once you start writing a book?

A.A.S.: I write the story (which is usually less than 1000 words), and then I come across the dilemma, novella or novel?

Young: What about you in general? What is it that makes you tick? Makes you you? Things you like to do and what prompted you into writing?

A.A.S.: I share my life with an amazing woman and we both love travels, going out and talking with our friends. My partner has the ability to make me want to do everything!

My desire to share a piece of me with everyone out there made me flirt with the idea of becoming a writer.

Young: Among your own books, have you a favourite book? Favourite Hero or Heroine?

A.A.S.: English Patient by Michael Ondaatje, I love this book.

Young: Where do you see yourself in five years?

A.A.S.: Healthy, having fun with the people I love and writing beautiful, interesting stories.

On the Sixth Floor

A.A.S.: Historical information. I spend hours in front of my pc (internet makes everything easier!).

Young: What does your significant other think of your writing?

A.A.S.: She loves the stories, but she loves complaining as well (once I start writing, I forget to stop and I really mean it).

Young: Do you ever ask them for advice or ideas to go into your works?

A.A.S.: No, but I would never hesitate to ask for advice or a new idea.

Young: Have you ever experienced Writer's Block?  If so how did you work through it?

A.A.S.: Unfortunately, I dont have the time to do everything I want!

Young: Who are some of your favourite authors to read?

A.A.S.: John Green, John Grisham, Stephen King, K.C Sprayberry, Mary Lawson and many more.

Young: Anything else you'd like to tell our readers?

A.A.S.: Dont stop reading and discovering talented writers.

Young: Lastly do you have any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

A.A.S.: Never give up, miracles do happen every day.

Trapped in Timelessness Fallen Angels

Trapped in Timelessness : Fallen Angels

Excerpt

Her beautiful, long fingers slept on the yellow curtains as her blue eyes kept searching for the prince she was waiting for. Her mind continued making plans for the future whereas the suns rays ran into her pale face, enlightening her complexion and changing her mood.

The girl loved looking outside; she liked watching the beautiful valley across their lovely farm. She felt like being a part of a wonderful picture where the green color along with the rest of the colors of the spring had started dominating in the whole area. She pulled her blonde hair back while her long, yellow dress made her look like Dimitra, the ancient Greek goddess of agriculture and fertility.

The young girl turned back and smiled at her mother who liked staring at her daughter in silence, trying to guess her thoughts. Although her daughter had never revealed her inner feelings, she could understand and explain the signs of love.

Its nice being in love, but we have many things to do, the mother said vaguely.

The middle-aged woman took off her white coat and left it on the chair while she came closer to her daughter and caressed her sweet face.

There is not only Patrick in your life, Abby, she said.

I know that, Mother, Abby answered angrily.

Since dinner is ready, I want you to call your father. The woman abstained from saying anything else because she hated seeing her daughter defensive, being unwilling to talk about her relationship.

Yes, Mother, Abby whispered.

Thats great, thank you, baby. The woman knew that she had to wait for her daughters acceptance.

Im going right now.

Okay, honey.

Her mother gave her daughter her coat and held her right hand, looking into her eyes, trying to make the introduction for those she was planning to say, but found very difficult to mention since the girl always avoided discussing with her mother about boys.

Abby, you are only sixteen. I know that you like Patrick and I think he is a good kid, but I dont want you to rush doing something that you might regret or dont want, she said seriously.

Mom, take it easy, Im still a virgin. Abby sounded nervous.

I just want to tell you that its your decision. Dont let anyone decide for you. Her mother smiled and hugged her daughter, feeling relieved.

I know what Im doing, Mom. You will have to trust me. Abby said.

I trust you, baby. She caressed her hair and laughed. She hesitated to ask directly her daughter about her relationship with the teenage boy, but she couldnt postpone their conversation either.

Im going to call Dad, Abby said.

That would be great, honey.

The young girl put on the white coat and closed the white door behind her, walking slowly toward the stairs of the spacious yard. The sun hid behind the white clouds and the cool air reminded Abby of the cold days of the winter. But the beautiful valley had already put on the dress with the intense colors of light, joy and optimism. One sight upon the large trees was enough to come across euphoria. Her blue eyes had turned into a round mirror, reflecting the magic power of the nature.

Abby took a few steps and stared at the small goose while she didnt miss to wave and smile at her favorite friend. When she heard the sound of the tractor upon the hill, she ran toward her father, feeling free and happy. Her long hair was flying in the air as she loved running among the tall, dry canes. Abby could smell the scent of the rain in the air and hated the thought of walking in the mud again. She loved the heat and looked forward to seeing the hot, sunny days.

Out of the blue, Abby felt weird. She stopped and looked up at the sky, wondering about the large shadow which flew above her and hid the daylight from her sight. She felt there was something going on; she had goosebumps and she couldnt hear the sound of her fathers tractor anymore. The moment she saw all the black birds in the sky forming a huge, dark cloud, Abby started laughing nervously.

The beautiful girl grabbed a small piece of a dry cane and ripped it up in her cold hands in an effort to expel the fear which tried to invade her peaceful world. Abby started walking again and was soon able to see the black birds resting on the red track. The absence of her father made her worry and she didnt waste her time. She began calling him by her pet name for him.

Super Dad! Abby sounded scared.

The girl ran over the field, making circles around their large farm. The moment she realized she had searched everywhere, she went back at her fathers track where she took a deep breath and sat down on the ground, hoping that soon she would find her father. The birds were eating the seeds of the corn from the jagged ground, but she didnt have the courage to stand up and make them leave.

Super Dad! the girl screamed again.

Abby got up and started looking for her father again until she heard her mother screaming for help.

Mom? Abby was taken aback. She started shaking, unable to see her mother from where she was.

Abby, run baby, they will kill you! her mother shouted.

Abby panicked and started running toward the big house to help her mother.

THAT night

SHE wore a flowing, form fitted white spaghetti strapped gown that cascaded in tumbled silken folds to her abdomen and revealed her breath in the soft rise of her alabaster breasts. Her eyes reflected an emerald depth with gold flecks that edged to hazel and were framed by neat, arched brows that narrowed to her temples where her heartbeat announced the rhythm of her life. Her only adornment was a starkly white gardenia nestled in the curves of her auburn. The heavy floral fragrance of the corsage announced her arrival as she glided elegantly to her aisle and settled, like a dove, into her center seat. She was alonebut not for long.

Would she regret her indulgence?

HE was a towering, self-assured giant of a black man, chest broad and arms outstretched in opulent black leather. His intense black eyes locked irresistibly onto her and declared his hunger. The opera house erupted with his full bass-baritone harmony. His musical seduction began, and his hypnotic gaze was met by her eager response as she answered his desire with a blush.

But, was his desire enough?

THEY spent an insatiable night together in Room 457 of the Historic Whitcomb Hotel locked in a magnetic embrace riding moonbeams of passion and ribbons of desire that wove them irretrievably together in ways that only the future would disclosea future neither of them ever anticipated. Would the secrets of the past, of that one night, prove too much to bear as the future unfolds the truth and the depths of her desperate need?

Would the life and death struggle she faced overshadow the seeds of love planted a decade earlier?

The orchestra warmed up in a disconnected, faltering collection of notes, strings and horns as the wealthy patrons filed into the theatre and were settled. She wore a flowing yet form fitted white spaghetti strapped gown with a backline to the small of her back above the well-rounded cheeks of her ass. The cascading neckline tumbled in silken folds to her abdomen which revealed her breath in the soft rise of her alabaster breasts.

She was of medium height with an envious rubenesque shape most men admired: long, shapely legs nipped tightly at the ankle tapering to narrow, small demi-feet elegantly adorned in satin heeled slippers with scarlet, well-pedicured peek-a-boo toes, full breasted bosom with pert erect nipples stretched against the fabric of her gown, round hips that accentuated a narrow waist and a lovely pleasing back that joined all her sumptuous qualities. Her eyes reflected an emerald depth with gold flecks that edged to hazel and were framed by neat, arched brows that narrowed to her temples where her heartbeat announced the rhythm of her life. Her rounded cheekbones accentuated the graceful curve of her jaw line as it narrowed to a slightly dimpled chin below heart-shaped ruby lips. Her only adornment was a starkly white gardenia nestled in the curves of her auburn curls that caressed the pale white opaque flesh of her face. The heavy floral fragrance of the corsage announced her arrival. She glided elegantly to her aisle and settled, like a dove, into her center seat. She was alone.

The house lights dimmed yet she glowed, demurely, in the white gown as if she were unmistakably the main attraction.

She stared as he walked onstage: a towering, self-assured giant of a black man, arms outstretched in black opulent leather to embrace the audience, she felt to embrace her. His piercing gaze locked irresistibly onto her, in all her radiant purity. His intense black eyes seemed to declare his hunger.

1.1 Moonbeams E-Book Cover

The opera house erupted with his full bass-baritone harmony. He sang, it seemed to Jordan, to no one but her as she smiled quite involuntarily. Each throaty, reverberating note he released strummed every nerve to her very foundation.  His musical seduction began, and would surely end she thought, with her in his outstretched arms.

Her petulant feminine petals nestled in the protective mound where her thighs joined. They slowly filled with her eager response and unfolded the protection of the essential pearl of her existence as she answered his desire with a blush.

She sat through the entire performance tethered to his gaze. The magnetism she could not resist overtook her fully and her responses were involuntary yet welcome. She felt his gaze through her gown caress her, push her, tease her and excite her with every deep vibrato he released into the hall.

She was, therefore, completely surprised when the lights raised and the fluid embrace of his voice was gradually replaced by the swelling bustle of movement from the exiting audience. She looked to her left and right, then up to the stage beautifully shrouded by long red opulent velvet curtains separating her from the object of the gathered passion in her belly.

Her reverie broken, she returned to the moment at hand. As she rose, the romantic trance invoked by his voice broke, the hold eased, and dropped shard by shard from her body so that she could move. She gathered her wits, shook off the spell and seemed to float in the afterglow with the others to the atrium. She exited the main entrance to the broad threshold above the street below.

She took a few steps outside and shocked by the damp San Francisco night, drew her wrap ever tighter to her heaving breast, her nipples still erect from the seduction of the opera star. She paused a moment, enjoyed the remains of her trance, and proceeded down the steps to hail a cab.

The after symphony reception was held at the home of one of San Franciscos most prominent elite, a huge supporter and member of the Symphony Board of Directors, Drake Morrison. Drake and his wife Amelia were friends of Jordans parents who were absent because of a holiday in the Orient. Jordans parents were regular supporters of the Symphony and met the Morrisons frequently during intermission on most opening nights for a glass of champagne. She had been invited as a distraction from her solitude to join them on opening night at the reception in their home. She agreed to attend eagerly as she often attended the symphony with her Mother when her Father was unable.

She felt her low-belly tighten; her heart pounded and her palms tingled with perspiration in anticipation. The main opera lead and cast always came to the receptions. The non-profit organization relied upon their attendance to boost donations so she knew she would see him here and she wondered if he would even recognize her or if the reverie of connection had been hers alone.

When he entered with his entourage, he towered over everyone with his black elegance. He was beautiful, a stunning black onyx statue carved to magnificent perfection. When she saw him, only feet away, she staggered slightly as he turned to her with an outstretched hand in greeting, eyes locked in a magnetic embrace. She lost her breath and her heart in one moment as she touched his fingertips with hers.

He clasped her hand with the both of his and pulled her close to his body with a knowing smile curled on the curve of his chiseled jaw line. She felt his heat, was hypnotized by his aroma. She knew then that he remembered her in the audience; he had sung to her, he had sent his words in musical notes on foils to surround her, lift and seduce her.

The moment was suspended when he was directed to further introductions. He bowed ever so slightly with his departure and barely whispered, a bientot, memselle, his breath searing her necklineShe weakened in his presence and felt ill-balanced on a passionate precipice as he moved away. Their arms outstretched unwilling to be parted, her hand slid from his as their fingertips relinquished an electric hold.

A bientot, memselle, he had said. She hung on every word with rapt expectation for their next meeting as he moved into the crowd of admirers.

She watched as he worked the room, seducing male and female alike with his charisma and brilliance. He was a master in the simple ministration of his charm. He spoke with confidence, smiled at nonsensical nervous banter and made everyone most relaxed in his presence with an effortless touch.

The night edged on and she resigned she was like all the others, seduced by the sheer presence of the man. She sought out the Morrisons and bid them a grateful goodnight. She went into the library where her wrap was hung. A manly black hand extended and took it from her grip and as she spun, he curled her into his embrace as well as the shawl.

My room key at the Hotel Whitcomb. The town car service I called to take you there is waiting outside. Room 457. Have I presumed too much? as he pressed himself to her body and the key card into her hand. The low melodious tone of his voice melted any thought of resistance.

I, ahNo, you have not presumed beyond expectation. I ache to feel you inside me, truly, and I thank you for your discretion. The Morrisons are long time friends of my parents who dont yet consider me a grown woman, she smiled into his down-turned eyes and smelled his heat.

A Chat with Author Christoph Fischer (Part One)

G1-sm-lottery2

Young: Welcome to In The Harem. Nice to have a chance to talk with you.

I'm sure readers will love to know when was the first time you decided to write and when was the first time you did?

Christoph Fischer (C.F.): I always had a bit of a lively imagination. I wrote a few articles for my schools student newspaper when I was younger. Then I did nothing of the sort for over twenty years until a psychic told me that I would write a book. I found it amusing. Then a different psychic told me the same thing and that raised my interest. Five years ago I sat down to try it. I wrote the first draft for Conditions and I havent stopped since.

Young: Did anyone influence you or encourage you to become a writer?

C.F.: My father was an avid reader; both my parents always encouraged creativity of any kind and I also had some excellent literature teachers when I was young.

My sister and my partner were my first readers. They liked my books and gave me the confidence to show them to more people. My close friend and cover designer Daz Smith was the one who eventually pushed me to publish.

Young: When did you decide to write in your chosen genres?

C.F.: Im an impulsive writer and would find it hard to stick with just one genre. I write about what interests me. For a while I got stuck in historical fiction because I love history. The research for one book always seemed to raise points of interest for the next one. I also wrote about mental health and Alzheimer's Disease, issues close to my heart. In January I published a thriller. I started out writing it as a book about Western medicine versus alternative healing but the story was better suited for a thriller.

Young: Tell us about your book The Gamblers.

C.F.: The Gamblers is an easy to read thriller about money, friendship, love and trust. Ben, an accountant, wins the lottery and finds that the money makes his life more complicated than he bargained for. Its a fun book but not without some serious undertones about gambling and trust.

Young: Have you written any other books?

C.F.: Yes. I have written four historical novels, mainly set in Central Europe during the first half of the 20th Century; two contemporary dramas about Alzheimer's and mental health, and one medical thriller, The Healer.

Young: How long does it take you to write a book?

C.F.: If all goes well, the first draft for a novel can be done within three weeks (after research if needed) but then there are months of editing and re-writes. Working full time, with beta readers and editors at my full disposal, Id say it takes about four months from the first word to the printed book in my hand.

Christoph Fisher

Young: What is your work schedule like when youre writing?

C.F.: Tough, because there is also marketing and publicity work to be done. I get up early and walk the dogs, then I sit down and ideally I write until I need a break or run out of steam. Then I do the marketing. Its easy to forget to eat or go shopping during those phases.

Young: Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

C.F.: Most books that Ive written were inspired by subjects that fascinated me naturally, such as ancestry research, historical facts or family issues (i.e. Alzheimer's). I read up on them out of interest and the plot ideas developed from there.

The idea behind The Gamblers came from real life. My partner and I talked about what wed do if we won the lottery. Im quite content with my life and couldnt think of much I would want to buy or change on my life. In fact, the thought of having multiple houses and staff felt like too much hard work for me. Wealth and looking after it can be a burden and can take away your freedom.  The idea of Ben, the stingy accountant and reluctant millionaire, and of all the things that happen to him in my novel was born.

Young: Do you have any suggestions for other writers? If so, what are they?

C.F.: Go for it. Keep writing, dont be discouraged and work on your craft.

Young: Who would you cast to play the characters in a movie?

C.F.: For Ben, the accountant, I would choose Ewan McGregor or Edward Norton.

Mirco, the gambler, could be played by either Alexander Skarsgard or Matthew McConaughey. Wendy, the stewardess could be played by Scarlett Johanson or Naomi Watts.

Young: What song would you pick to go with your book?

C.F.: There is a German song from 1986 called Der Spieler that partially inspired the book. Very moody and mysterious but it does not travel or translate well

For the English version I would suggest The Winner Takes It All by Abba or Money Money Money by Abba, or Name of the Game by Abba - even Waterloo.

Young: How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

C.F.: Not sleeping. Not eating. Not answering the phone. Hide!

The Gamblers-book large

Young: What do you like best about writing? Whats your least favourite thing?

C.F.: Writing the first draft is the most enjoyable part for me: Not knowing for sure how the story is going to end and having all the options open.

My least favourite part is the marketing. Id rather not tell people that my books are must-reads and would love it if people could be dears and discover my work quietly on their own.

Young: What do you do when you dont write?

C.F.: Walk my dogs, go to the gym, read and watch silly comedy programmes on TV. Throw in the odd meditation and quality time with the family.

Young: What makes you laugh?

C.F.: Friends, Brooklyn 99, Big Bang Theory, Woody Allen, adolescent humour.

Young: Who would you like to invite for dinner?

C.F.: Susan Sarandon and Stephen Hawkins. Id imagine them to be interesting guests.

Young: How do you handle criticism of your work?

C.F.: After a few years in the business I think I handle it very well. Constructive criticism can be very helpful to become a better writer and Ill always welcome that.

If someone read my book, engaged with it and didnt like it, fair enough. And those who use reviews to offload anger and hate that comes with the territory of publishing and has to be endured. I dont like it but I see it for what it is.

I also own a shotgun.
