Bethany Meets Hundreds of Fans and Teaches Orphan Children To Surf In Bali
contributing source: Rip Curl
Kuta, Bali – Professional surfer, star of Hollywood blockbuster Soul Surfer and shark-attack survivor, Bethany Hamilton led a surf lesson for unprivileged children from orphanages including Benih Harapan Orphanage in Bali on Friday. Kids ranging in age from 8 to 13 joined global icon and role model Hamilton for an afternoon of fun and surfing at Legian Beach in Kuta.
Hamilton, 22, who is currently in Bali preparing to surf in the 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational (July 15 – August 26), helped the kids catch the small inside white-water waves on longboards all afternoon. She provided instruction on basic ocean safety, environmental awareness and the fundamentals of surfing. She also inspired the kids to follow their dreams and make their passions reality with her incredible story. After the surfing lesson, the kids were treated to lunch and a photo opportunity with Hamilton at the Rip Curl School of Surf.
“It was a special day for me to be able to share surfing with these kids,” Hamilton said. “I hope it’s something they can continue to do for the rest of their lives. I know they’ve been through a lot at such a young age. Hopefully surfing can be a positive outlet for these kids as they continue to grow up.”
The surf lesson was a joint effort by the Rip Curl School of Surf and Soul Surf Project Bali, a group that connects underprivileged youth in Bali with surfing equipment and lessons. Hamilton and Rip Curl also donated basic food supplies including sacks of Rice, Noodles and Milk plus five surfboards to Soul Surf Project Bali to use for future lessons and surf outings.
After the surf lesson, Hamilton met with fans and signed autographs at the Rip Curl Memorial Store on Jalan Legian in Kuta. The turnout was unexpectedly big, over 500 fans packed the store and stopped traffic on the busy street, hoping to meet one of the most inspirational surfers of all time. Hamilton said she was amazed by the turnout and support from her many fans in Bali.
“It was amazing to see all the people who came out today,” Hamilton said. “I was expecting it to be pretty low-key, but there were so many more people than I expected. Everyone in Bali is so passionate about surfing. It’s great to see.”

Recipe: Acai Banana Coconut Smoothie
“Then God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food’; and it was so. God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:29-31) …enjoy the fresh produce we have as a gift from God!
Açaí Banana Coconut Smoothie
Because I often eat them together, I wanted to incorporate two of my product sponsors – Zico Coconut Water & Sambazon Açaí – into one health tip. So, I decided to do a smoothie recipe that has both…. yuuummm!!
-2 frozen Sambazon Açaí Pure (unsweetened) smoothie packs
-1 organic banana
-1 cup ZICO Natural coconut water
-2 tablespoons maple syrup or raw honey (optional)
-1 scoop organic protein powder (optional)
-Coconut flakes (optional)
Instructions:
1. Blend all ingredients together.
2. Add more coconut water if necessary, but I like it thick!
3. Serve & enjoy!

I Swam the Napali Coast
I swam the Napali Coast–15 miles!
After three weeks on the road consisting of Soul Surfer promotions in Japan, ten days in France for the Swatch Girls Pro (Surf Contest), and (4 days in NYC for some special media with a few of my sponsors – Damon System Braces and ZICO Coconut Water, all I wanted to do was escape technology, play outside, be a mermaid, hang with my good friends and family, and have some quiet time. And that’s exactly what I did.
I swam the Napali Coast!!! Napali means “the cliffs;” it is 15 miles of sheer rugged cliff, with a few secluded beaches, which stretches down Kauai’s Northwest coastline. It’s absolutely gorgeous! No cars. You can hike it, or what I did growing up was kayak it! I love it. Growing up (and still) it was one of those things I really looked forward to doing with my family in the summer!
This summer one of my best friends, who I love to adventure with, and I decided to SWIM the whole coast! After traveling for three weeks we were feeling real FIT and ready to swim 15 miles. Haha, not really. But we went ahead and did it anyway with another friend who joined us for the swimming adventure. We swam the coast over a period of three days and stopped to camp at two locations on the way, hiking and hanging out in between! A bunch of our good friends kayaked along side of us for safety precautions and to fill us with water and energy while swimming. (Thanks, friends!)
My brother and sister-in-law and their beautiful baby girl joined us on the adventure! And with them they brought our new friend Kari Disney. I had met Kari on Skype through Friends of Bethany Hamilton my non-profit organization! Kari was born without her left arm and hopes to encourage others through her life story. It was awesome to hang and take her on a little Kauai adventure! (Read More about Kari’s Experience)
The swim was challenging, I would say for myself it was more of a mental challenge. It’s definitly a hard swim but for me swimming comes more natural. The first day we swam about 6 miles which took us three hours. The second two swims were about two hours each. The ocean was open and deep; it was a little rough, but I like it. Sometimes we had waves pushing us towards our goal and sometimes we had gnarly currents pushing against us! Most of the swim we were staring at sand, besides when we breathe and glance at the beautiful rugged mountains! Some of the swim we swam over reef! At one point we were swimming and there were about 15 honu (sea turtles) swimming near us!
As for sharks, I’m sure a lot of you are probably wondering if I’m scared of sharks. Well, I don’t know really. I guess I think about them every now and then, but am pretty fine to not worry too much.
It was an amazing feeling when we finished! We all felt very accomplished (and a bit relieved) to be done.
Someday I would like to swim the entire Napali coast in one day!

RECIPE: Green Basil Pesto
Green Basil Pesto recipe
I absolutely love basil, it’s my favorite herb! I google searched “health benefits of basil” a while back and read that basil is anticancer, antibacterial, anti inflammatory and is full of many nutrients, minerals and vitamins that are essential for good health!
I have about 8 basil plants so I make a lot of pesto dips! I hope you enjoy!
Add all ingredients below, in this order, in a food processor.
- 2 cups Macadamia Nuts
- 1/2 cup Raw Pumpkin Seeds
- bunch of Basil
- Few cloves of Garlic
- Dash of Sea Salt (to taste)
- Dash of Pepper
- Chili flakes (if you like a dash of spice)
- 1/2 to 1 cup of olive oil
With the basil pesto dip I like to eat it with crackers and veggie sticks. I like to put it wraps, also in seaweed wraps with veggies and so forth! Get creative with it and make some healthy yummy food for a healthier happier you!
