Choosing Perseverance
Mike Coots. We still surf together all the time on Kauai to this day and he’s my older brother’s friend as well. Mike lost his leg to a shark 5 or more years before myself, but he learned to surf with one leg. (He now does shark photography and conservation! Check him out!). Mike told me, “hey, I think you can learn to surf with one arm”. I was pumped, but it was definitely a gradual process with...

Worth the Wait
Adam and I had the privilege to share our own love story in a recent ‘Ohana Live Call. We also invited our good friend Jackie Brewton to share her amazing expertise on all things dating, sex and marriage. Jackie has been helping middle, high, and college students make positive life choices with these topics since 2001. She’s written two very popular books: 7 Secrets Guys Will Never Tell You: A...

My Tips for a Positive Body Image
You’re just constantly showing your body – whether you want to or not. It’s a lot to live with! Naturally, it’s easy to find yourself comparing a little bit and becoming self-conscious. This was especially hard for me in my teen years. I’m not the only one who had a tough time with it. There aren’t a lot of female pro surfers in the world – probably about 300 or so – and within that are probably...

My Dad’s Words of Wisdom on Parenting
He excelled in his role as a dad in my life and so I wanted to share some of his awesome advice on parenting with you: My dad is a huge proponent of intentional, one-on-one time to connect with people, especially when parenting. Growing up, he worked multiple jobs to support our family, but somehow always had time to have fun at the beach with us or take us out for a great adventure.

Life with One Arm
After I lost my arm, all of the sudden daily tasks like cutting an apple or putting my hair up were so overwhelming. Learning to surf with one arm was really challenging too. I quickly learned that I have to be extremely adaptable to conquer all the little things that come my way. However, sometimes I find it to be a fun challenge because I have to think a little harder about how to do typical...

The Spotlight
I can’t tell you how often people ask me this! Living my life so much in the public’s eye has been extremely challenging and very rewarding at the same time. My decision to enter into it all was based mostly upon my desire to use the hard parts of my story to encourage and bless others. As a kid, my church and my parents were really focused on outreach and giving back to those around them.

Snickerdoodle Frosting Recipe
What I love most about this frosting is that it actually gives you a boost of protein!! We make it with Primal Kitchen’s Snickerdoodle Collagen Powder. This collagen mix adds protein and a delicious cinnamon-y spice to yummy treats. We like to use this recipe to frost our Chocolate Cookie Cutter Cookies. We make them for Valentine’s Day, Christmas and just about any other special occasion!

Keeping Relationships Beautiful
I was so stoked to talk about the topic of conflict in my ‘Ohana Live Call. Learning how to navigate conflict, especially with those you love, is one of the most valuable lessons we can learn. Girls, it will set you up to be a better future roommate, friend, teammate, coworker and wife, when that day comes! Christine Cashen brought practical tips, a great perspective and a lot of laughter to this...

Bouncing Back from Negative Self-Talk
I invited my friend Maeve Ronan to one of my live ‘Ohana calls to help us with this topic. Maeve is the author of books for middle and high schoolers that focus on working through things like sadness, depression, nervousness and awkwardness. She wrote her most popular book, It’s the Depression for Me, based on what she wished she knew when she struggled with depression in high school.
