How Do You Like It So Far? Episode 57

Recently I had the pleasure of talking about pushing the boundaries of comics with theoretical physicist and cartoonist Clifford V. Johnson on Prof. Henry Jenkins’ podcast How Do You Like It So Far? which is a series of conversations about what happens where pop culture and the civic imagination overlap. Check the episode’s web page for show notes of links to everything that came up during our conversation.

LIGHTS Comics Featured in Times Square

We’re so very pleased that the LIGHTS comic series we’ve been creating with UNITAS to warn young people about #humantrafficking got a huge signal boost via the Times Square NASDAQ jumbotron! Our partners at UNITAS were even invited to ring the closing bell, how cool is that?

You can see video here, available via NASDAQ

THR Previews CHASING ECHOES

Ahead of its bookstore launch next week, THR has featured CHASING ECHOES along with a short preview from the book’s opening chapter: “The graphic novel comes from the publisher’s Life Drawn imprint, created last year as a home for personal stories rooted in reality, absent fantastical elements. In this case, Chasing Echoes was inspired by real events, as the unruly Bloom family returns to Poland in search of the family’s mill, seized by the Nazis during World War II.”

SoCal Dates for CHASING ECHOES Graphic Novel Launch

My new graphic novel CHASING ECHOES drops on Nov 13th... and I’m doing two events in Southern California before the Thanksgiving holiday kicks off. The book is a story of generations of survivors surviving each other... specifically the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors and how they reconnect with a lost link to their own history. I wrote it, my friend George Schall lovingly drew it, and now its ready for the world:

First off, the launch event at Skylight Books, my favorite LA bookstore, followed by an event in San Diego at the illustrious Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore.

Tuesday, November 13 @ 7:30 p.m.
Skylight Books
1818 N. Vermont Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90027

Weds, November 14 @ 7pm
Mysterious Galaxy
5943 Balboa Ave, Ste 100
San Diego, California 92111

A little more about the story:

Malka, the black sheep of her family, learns that her relatives are making a decades-in-the-planning pilgrimage to their grandfather's pre-Holocaust home in Poland...and she wasn't invited. After guilt-tripping herself a ticket as the self-appointed "Keeper of the Family Archives," it becomes clear that everyone's brought more baggage than just their suitcases.

Chasing Echoes is a heartfelt tale about dysfunctional family dynamics, the ghosts of war and what brings us back together.

Featured in Streaming Doc GEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND!

Dan Goldman is featured in the new documentary GEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND alongside luminaries like Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. The film captures the team’s journey to better understand the importance of superheroes, the deeper meaning behind why fans are so passionate about them and real-life scenarios in which they help make the world a better place by battling social ills such as racism and gender violence.

KSL Partners with UNITAS for Anti-Trafficking Serial #WolvesInTheStreet

We are proud to announce that the first chapter of #WolvesInTheStreet—our comic serial produced in collaboration with anti-human-trafficking organization UNITAS—launches today! The serial’s aim is to show children and teens online how easily human trafficking can happen—and also how easily it can be prevented. The digital comic, which was developed with extensive human trafficking survivor input, depicts teen Lacey in two different scenarios: one where she ends up in the hands of a trafficker, and one where she follows her instincts and makes a better decision, which ultimately leads to a better outcome. UNITAS will release the digital comic across Instagram, Snap and YouTube to reach children and teens on the social channels they most frequent in hopes of preventing trafficking before it starts through education and awareness.

“Part of UNITAS’s mission is to educate and inform the public about trafficking, in order to stop it before it starts,” said Todd Cavaluzzi, Executive Director, UNITAS. “We are thrilled to work together with incredible partners like Dan to educate kids and teens in a unique way that speaks to them through the social media channels they use every day. Our hope is that this series of comics will reach them before traffickers do.”

“While doing field research into sex trafficking in Kolkata for my third Priya’s Shakti book, I found myself wondering why I wasn’t creating work that addresses the same practices in my own culture,” said Dan Goldman. “I am thrilled to have UNITAS as a partner in creative storytelling tools that can teach young people how to avoid being trafficked.”

Amplifier's #MyClimateHero Project

Amplifier.org reached out to us to design portraits of real-life environmentalist heroes for their #MyClimateHeroes gallery/digital project:

In honor of Earth Day 2018, Amplifier has released a new series of artworks designed through collaborations between comic artists and environmental leaders. There are a lot of misconceptions about what climate leadership looks like, or who fits the mold of an environmentalist. #MyClimateHero tells the story of modern climate leaders building unprecedented cooperation, driving action and creating space for those most impacted to share their knowledge and perspectives.

We created two portraits for the series--Bold Nebraska founder Jane Kleeb and VocesVerdes founder Adrianna Quintero--and you can the entire series at Amplifier.org.

This afternoon we gather three extremely versatile talents to discuss how they approach their craft. Xia Jia is a multi award-winning writer and filmmaker whose writing style blends and bends genres such as sci-fi, fantasy, romance and mythology. Dan Goldman is an award-winning writer, artist and narrative designer working in graphic novels, television, mixed-reality experiences and video games. He produces activist fictions like Priya’s Shakti that build empathy while delivering social messaging. And award-winning author Ma Boyong writes a range of genres including historical fiction, fantasy and mystery and is known for his humorous, often hilarious style. His books include Antique Game, The Doomsday Book and Goddess of Wind and Rain.

This event will be consecutively translated in English and Chinese.
