C2 Montreal Rocks, GDPR Scares Brands And More On This Week's CTRL ALT Delete Segment On CHOM 97.7 FM
Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It's not a long segment - about 10 minutes every week - about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you're interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what's going on in the digital world. I'm really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.
This week we discussed:
This past week we had the amazing C2 Montreal conference in town. What were the highlights, and what this conference done to bring Montreal on to the world scene of creativity, commerce and technology? Plus, Snoop Dog hotboxed the aquarium interview room!
The European GDPR rules went into effect last week. It's been a crazy week for businesses trying to ensure that their websites are "on side" for this. "The General Data Protection Regulation is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union (EU). The GDPR sets out the principles for data management and the rights of the individual, while also imposing fines that can be revenue-based. The General Data Protection Regulation covers all companies that deal with data of EU citizens, so it is a critical regulation for corporate compliance officers at banks, insurers, and other financial companies. GDPR came into effect across the EU on May 25, 2018." In short: it's a mess (and why we're all being emailed - non-stop - by every business we have ever signed up for about these new terms and updates to privacy policies).
The new crop of virtual assistants and smart speakers like Google Home and Amazon Alexa are busy changing our world. Mostly for the better? Well, last week, a couple said that their Alexa recorded a private conversation and then sent it on to an acquaintance! Yikes! Maybe they should change the name from Amazon Alexa to Amazon Wiretap? What's the real story here?

Six Links Worthy Of Your Attention #413
Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, Pandemonio, and ResolveTO, Author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (PressBooks, LibriVox, iambik and co-author of Book: A Futurist's Manifesto) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person "must see".
Check out these six links that we're recommending to one another:
Immersive Linear Algebra - Immersive Math . "This amazing interactive math textbook shows what's possible with modern interfaces. In data science we have 'notebooks'--Python, Jupyter, and R code, alongside text, that is both a book and a program. Here, the authors have applied this approach to a math textbook, letting readers play with values, drag angles around, and get an instant understanding of things like vector products, that are intuitively obvious but harder to express mathematically." (Alistair for Hugh).
Google's Selfish Ledger Is An Unsettling Vision of Silicon Valley Social Engineering - The Verge . "Google's research labs come up with crazy ideas, some of which take root in some way within the company's products. Out of context, however, they can look like B-roll reels for Black Mirror episodes, and the Selfish Ledger is no exception. Personally, I've been thinking a lot about the role of personal agents--what their goals are when we get them commercially, and whether they have client-attorney privilege, and so on. But when the thinking leans towards making bespoke artifacts to nudge a person towards even more sensors, or steering people towards a better society, it raises a ton of important questions about our species." (Alistair for Mitch).
How democracy dies - New Statesman . "There was a time when most of us in the West had the Hegelian conviction that democracy was the system preferred by the arc of history (now and forever). You still hear many pundits say things like, 'History won't judge [latest political incomprehensible shocker] well,' assuming that ' istory' is on 'our' side, meaning the side of liberal democracy. But, democracy is under threat -- from populists within, and from well-functioning and supported dictatorships from without. And it might not survive." (Hugh for Alistair).
What Does Quantum Physics Actually Tell Us About the World? - The New York Times . "Answer: that things are stranger than our brains can handle." (Hugh for Mitch).
A psychologist explains why technology's impact on your brain is probably overblown - Quartz . "We don't really understand technology. We're all addicted to technology. Staring at screens can't be good for our brains. Google is making us all dumber... and more shallow. Nobody really knows what this tech addiction is doing to our children (...and it can't be good). These are standard turns of phrase that we see (and are bombarded by) and read on a daily basis. The fear is real. The science behind this thinking? Maybe not so much?" (Mitch for Alistair).
Millennials may prefer reading paper books over e-books - Futurity . "Kids today... such rebels. Suddenly, they all want to read books on... wait for it... paper?" (Mitch for Hugh).
Feel free to share these links and add your picks on Twitter, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

Montreal! Next Monday! Ignite Your Brand... And Light The Night!
What will it take for your business to thrive in the future?
It is very rare that I get the opportunity to take part in a public event in my hometown of Montreal. I give about 50 presentations (all over the world) every year about what businesses need to know about consumers, and how technology has changed their buying behaviors and patterns (and who they are loyal to). It is even more rare that I get the chance to connect with everyone for a great and meaningful cause.
Join me and other local business leaders, media personalities and local luminaries on Monday, May 28th 2018 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.
Ignite Your Brand... And Light The Night will be a special 5-7 cocktail coupled with an in-depth conversation that multi-platinum Moist singer, solo artist, author, creative catalyst and AI startup entrepreneur, David Usher, will conduct with me. In this conversation we will discuss everything from what the current landscape of successful brands looks like, business transformation, brand disruption and how to create a future-proof business in these complex times. We will also discuss my personal journey from music journalist and early-days of the Internet to record label owner and my current role of 15+ years leading one of the world's largest digital marketing agencies, Mirum.
Why are we doing this Ignite Your Brand... And Light The Night Event?
Every year, I have been taking part in the Light The Night walk to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. I do this because I love Leah Knecht. Leah is my best friend's daughter. Back in 2010, Yosi (my BFF) called to let me know that his five year old daughter had cancer... leukemia. My world collapsed. A few weeks prior she was at my kid's birthday party, laughing, playing... perfect. Now... leukemia? It was - without a question - one of the hardest moments in my life... trying to understand - and take in - what my close friend was telling me about his daughter... who I would treat as my own daughter. I went into a tailspin. Leah's courage throughout this nightmare is what pulled everyone through - family and friends. If there were ever a definition for the word "survivor" it is Leah. After a lengthy and hard battle, the cancer went into remission, and she went back home where she belongs: with her family and friends. She is doing great these days, and she just started high school. Many are not as lucky as Leah... sadly.
Here are the details:
Ignite Your Brand - Light The Night.
Monday - May 28th, 2018
5:30 - 8:30 pm.
RBC - 1 Place Ville-Marie - 41st floor - Montreal, Quebec.
Price: $100 per ticket (there will be taxable donation refund on this).

What People Are Really Thinking With Mark Bowden - This Week's Six Pixels Of Separation Podcast
Episode #619 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Mirum Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.
In business you have to understand your customers... and your audience. We often talk about the power of getting better at communicating. This is true. Still, one of the largest parts of communications is usually an arena that few business professionals spend any amount of time understanding: body language and unspoken cues. These, usually, are the difference between winning that pitch (and retaining that customer)... or not. Whether it's online, in person or just consuming his content, I always enjoy the time I spend with Mark Bowden. He's perfectly engaging, entertaining and there's always something to learn. There is this powerful notion that success comes not from what we say, but what we do and how we say it. This power of communications is powerful. Few people truly have the expertise of Mark Bowden. He has developed cutting-edge techniques to stand out, win trust and grow profits through the power of communication. Some would call him a body language expert. I believe he is much more than that. He runs a company called Truthplane. He's written the bestselling business books Winning Body Language, Winning Body Language for Sales Professionals and Tame the Primitive Brain. Mark is also the co-creator of online course, Presentation Genius. Mark has a highly viewed TEDx talk and his YouTube Channel has over 3 million views. His latest book, Truth & Lies - What People Are Really Thinking (which is co-authored by Tracey Thomson) is incredible. Enjoy the conversation...
