C2 Montreal Rocks, GDPR Scares Brands And More On This Week's CTRL ALT Delete Segment On CHOM 97.7 FM

Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It's not a long segment - about 10 minutes every week - about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you're interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what's going on in the digital world. I'm really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.

This week we discussed:

This past week we had the amazing C2 Montreal conference in town. What were the highlights, and what this conference done to bring Montreal on to the world scene of creativity, commerce and technology? Plus, Snoop Dog hotboxed the aquarium interview room
The European GDPR rules went into effect last week. It's been a crazy week for businesses trying to ensure that their websites are "on side" for this. "The General Data Protection Regulation is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union (EU). The GDPR sets out the principles for data management and the rights of the individual, while also imposing fines that can be revenue-based. The General Data Protection Regulation covers all companies that deal with data of EU citizens, so it is a critical regulation for corporate compliance officers at banks, insurers, and other financial companies. GDPR came into effect across the EU on May 25, 2018." In short: it's a mess (and why we're all being emailed - non-stop - by every business we have ever signed up for about these new terms and updates to privacy policies).
The new crop of virtual assistants and smart speakers like Google Home and Amazon Alexa are busy changing our world. Mostly for the better? Well, last week, a couple said that their Alexa recorded a private conversation and then sent it on to an acquaintance! Yikes! Maybe they should change the name from Amazon Alexa to Amazon Wiretap? What's the real story here
