Meet Suzi Barrett!

Suzi Barrett’s comedy will punch your funny bone, then buy the next round of drinks for everyone. After reading through our new Affirmators! cards, created and written by Suzi, you’ll completely understand.

Suzi’s a Renaissance woman. If you’re into entertainment of the hilarious kind, you’ve likely seen Suzi flip the bird at the Golden State’s beauty in her viral Funny or Die series “I Hate California.” Or, you may have leafed through her 50 Shades of Gray coffee table book. Us Los Angelenos have seen Suzi grace the Upright Citizen Brigade’s stage, where she teaches and performs. Her improv troupe, Sentimental Lady, riffs off an audience member’s guilty pleasure every Saturday night. When she’s not performing, she’s writing for shows. She’s written for “Drunk History,” “@Midnight,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “American’s Next Weatherman,” and plays Kirby’s on on Disney XD’s show “Kirby Buckets.”*

Knock Knock Affirmators Cards - Positive Affirmations

Affirmators! by Suzi Barrett.

It’s no wonder Suzi drenched Affirmations! in both empowerment and hilarity—shaking off all the self-helpy-ness. She wanted to create daily cards that rethink New Age World-y decks, blending together positive affirmations, the mystique of medicine cards—and comedy, of course.

1. How did you get into comedy? Was this something you’ve always wanted to do as a career? I’ve wanted to be an actor since I was a little kid. In middle school, I started becoming the class clown—you know, because I needed a “thing” and I wasn’t good-looking or good at sports, which are basically the other two options in 6th grade. By high school I figured out that I wasn’t a naturally talented actor but I could always make people laugh. So . . . my career goal sort of organically evolved from something vague and improbable (“movie star”), to something vaguer and unmeasurable (“funny person”). I was obsessed with a lot of comedians who’d started as improvisers, so improv seemed like the logical jumping off point for me. Turns out I should have skipped the whole thing and become an overworked attorney with a pile of grad school debts. Just kidding. This was a good choice.

2. Favorite comedians right now? (Can be improvers or stand-up.) There are too many to name, but if I had to pick one of each: Rebecca Drysdale is my favorite improviser, and Bill Hicks is my all-time favorite stand-up.

Suzi Barrett UCB with Robin Williams

Suzi’s been performing at UCB for nine years now. She’s even shared the UCB stage with the legendary Robin Williams. (So ridiculously cool.)

Suzi Barrett Improv

Suzi in action.

3. Favorite Affirmators! card? Wonder. I love the illustration so much, and the text on the card is basically my motto in life.

4. Hobbies outside of work? Camping, hiking, cooking, DJing, gardening, geocaching, board games, making treasure hunts. And I play a mean game of basketball. (Mean to my team and the fans, because I’m not very good).

Suzi Barrett Camping

Suzi camps.

5. Your improv group, Sentimental Lady, plays off of audiences’ guilty pleasures. What’s the weirdest guilty pleasure you’ve heard? Oh man. There was this girl a couple of years ago whose guilty pleasure was going to Disneyland by herself. And not to ride the rides, but to eat the food. She said she sometimes just goes there just to have lunch. That’s an expensive, time-intensive corn dog.

6. This one’s two parts! A. What inspired you to create your “I Hate California” series? (Other than, California’s dumb beauty.) Is there a specific story to attribute to that? There is, actually. I used to work at a theatre in Amsterdam called Boom Chicago. It’s an improv and sketch theatre that hires American comedians, and you go over for a year or more and write and perform together full time. The cast becomes really tight-knit, and when anyone leaves to return to America they’re given a really big send-off, and all the other actors roast them as a last hurrah. Well, I had finished my stint there and moved to L.A., and I got word that a good friend of mine in the Boom cast was about to leave Boom and head to L.A. as well. The director emailed and said I could send in a roast video from L.A. that they’d play at O.T.’s going-away roast party.

So I sat down to come up with some roast jokes about him, and realized I had nothing. This guy is so wonderful and so well-behaved that there was nothing to even lovingly tease him about. So I decided to make a video roasting his decision to move to L.A.—making it sound like he was making the biggest mistake of his life. The joke being, of course, that L.A.’s great, and everything I’m making fun of is something either totally wonderful about L.A., or something annoying about living in Amsterdam. I posted it to his Facebook page as his little going away present, and two days later it was blowing up the Internet.

It was a very bizarre situation, because I’d spent years trying to make “viral” videos, and they all got, you know, like 4 views. There’s a great lesson in that, I think, which is just to make stuff for you and your friends without trying to get attention or trying to make something you think other people will like. Anyway. Years later, Funny or Die asked me if I’d want to make more videos in the same vein, and they paid for my travels so I could make the “I Hate California” series.

B. What do you “hate” most about California? Ugh. The goddamn never-ending display of abundant ecological variety. We get it, state. You have everything.

Suzi Barrett and Rebecca Drysdale DJing it up.

Suzi Barrett Game Master

Suzi Barrett, game master.

7. Any writing tips for fellow comedy writers? Yeah, just make stuff you like. Keep making it. Don’t worry about what anybody else is doing. Be grateful that you’re one of the few species that gets to create art intentionally (I say “one of” because there are animals like the bowerbird that are doing some great work out there). And watch Ira glass’s video on taste if you haven’t already.

Suzi Barrett Machu Piccu

Suzi conquering Machu Piccu.

8. What’s a random fact that no one necessarily knows about you? I love the musical “Chess.” (The songs, not the play. The play is a garbage parade.)

9. What’s your favorite Knock Knock product (not counting Affirmators!)? Love that fake-book-jacket notebook.

10. Last TV show you binge-watched? Two French bread pizzas and a tub of hummus. Oh—watched? I’m currently working my way through the WWII doc series on Netflix. I’ll shut up—I don’t want to drop any spoilers.

11. You’re in a cartoon movie. What’s cartoon Suzi’s animal sidekick and why? A narwhal on a pogo stick. Why not?

Get a Sniff of these Sweet Dog Adoption Stories!

RemiOctober is Adopt-a-Dog Month and we’ve been celebrating pups all month long, including hosting our special LICK or Treat Giveaway (which you can still enter!). Now it’s time to spotlight some of Knock Knock fans’ furry friends! Whether adopted from a shelter or rescued from the streets, every animal deserves a place to call home and these precious pups have finally found their own stomping grounds. Meet the cuddly canines below!

1. Molly (pictured above) and Sherlock, dog parent: Casey C. These two pups were both adopted from Los Angeles Animal Services. “When I first rescued her, she was extremely afraid of people and other dogs and even being on a leash. She now loves going on walks and meeting new dogs, so it’s nice to see how far she has come,” Casey said.

Sherlock

Sherlock, Casey’s first dog, is a 4-year-old Terrier who’s her most loyal companion. (Photo courtesy of Casey C.)

“I got him a dog birthday cake for his 4th birthday. He had no idea what was going on, but he loved every minute of it,” Casey said. (Photo courtesy of Casey C.)

2. Bear, Scooter, and Zoie, dog parent: Kaitlin J. of SheSpeaksBark.com .

Bear

Bear is a 13-year-old Border Collie/German Shepherd mix. He loves to make people laugh and is very gentle and patient (he’s even helped Kaitlyn raise foster kittens!). (Photo courtesy of Kaitlin J. of SheSpeaksBark.com)

Scooter 2

Scooter is a 7-year-old orange and white Pomeranian who loves to bark and howl along with certain types of music—Opera being his favorite! (Photo courtesy of Kaitlin J. of SheSpeaksBark.com)

Scooter has handicapable legs and back, but that doesn’t stop his energy! “The first time we took Scooter to the beach, he went wild with excitement—running up and down the shoreline and barking the whole time,” Kaitlyn said.

Zoie

Zoie is a 4-year-old blonde Pomeranian who loves to leave the tiniest tip of her tongue sticking out (as you can see)! (Photo courtesy of Kaitlin J. of SheSpeaksBark.com)

3. Wallace, dog parent: Sara W. Wallace, a Labrador, was rescued from an owner who was giving him away because the breeder said he wasn’t a “pure Lab.” “He’s great at playing catch–I say catch because he will jump so high to catch a tennis ball, but isn’t interested in fetching,” Sara said.

Wallace

Fun fact: Wallace also loves to eat bananas! He’s probably salivating at the sight of one here. (Photo courtesy of Sara W.)

4. Louise, dog parent: Angela D. This 4-year-old Pekingese/German Shepherd mix was born in a trailer park in West Virginia, and then adopted from a shelter in Pennsylvania.

Louise

Fun fact: Louise will sing instead of bark when she wants attention. (Photo courtesy of Angela D.)

5. Rue, dog parents: Clare C. and Steve C. This 2-year-old Catahoula mix loves playing ball but is very cautious if it rolls near anything unfamiliar. She’ll freeze mid-chase, wait to see where it lands, and then very cautiously proceed to retrieve it. She’s also not a fan of swimming, despite her webbed toes. “If you coax her into water too deep to stand, she’ll beeline it back to shore. However, if she spots a leaf floating down the creek, all bets are off,” Steve said.

Rue 2

“The first time my boyfriend [Steve] came over, she was very nice but made sure to position herself right between us on the couch. She sat there the whole time at full attention, just making sure we behaved ourselves,” Clare said. Here’s Rue lounging on the couch with Steve. (Photo courtesy of Clare C.)

6. Remi, dog parent: Crystal S. (both pictured above). Remi is a 1-year-old Bull Mastiff/Pocket Pittie mix adopted from the Animal Compassion Team by Crystal S. and her husband. She is one of the sweetest, goofiest dogs they’ve ever met and gets along great with their other rescue dog, Zelda.

7. Hank, dog parent: Elizabeth C. Hank was a 9-year-old yellow Labrador/Blood Hound mix adopted from the Seattle Humane Society. Sadly, Hank passed away on October 1, 2015, but he lived a happy life and will be remembered. Everyone in the neighborhood knew and loved Hank and he was great with kids. “Hank loved going to the ocean. Even though he was older and didn’t move as fast with his arthritis, he was so excited to be there. I swear he would [bark and say] ‘Mom! We’re at the ocean! I’m so happy to be here’,” Elizabeth said.

Hank

Fun fact: Hank loved to chase tennis balls and swim in the ocean. Rest in doggy heaven, Hank. (Photo courtesy of Elizabeth C.)

8. Ziggy and Luna, dog parent: Jenna P. Ziggy is a 6-year-old Terrier mix and world traveler. He was adopted from one of Jenna’s friends, who used to sail down the Pacific Coast, in and out of harbors from Baja, CA to El Salvador. “He is tenacious, loyal, and loving, and except for crocodiles, he is fearless,” Jenna said.

Ziggy

Fun fact: Ziggy takes his self-designated job of keeping birds away from the balcony very seriously—a talent carried over from his days on the sailboat. (Photo courtesy of Jenna P.)

Luna is an 8-year-old Lab/Terrier mix rescued from the streets of City Terrace, CA. “Her head was in a plastic bag where she’d been trying to scrounge a snack [and was] covered in a thousand seed ticks, and dirty, but had a beautiful, sweet smile,” Jenna said.

She made herself at home right away. “When I introduced her to my other dog and two cats, she (much, much larger than they) laid down, and wagged her tail and waited for them to approach her. It was a perfect match.”

Luna 2

Fun fact: Luna is a fierce and agile hunter, especially of lizards! (Photo courtesy of Jenna P.)

9. Stella, dog parent: Jennifer L. Stella, who does not like brooms, vacuums, hockey sticks, or shovels—and will attack them and bark like crazy if any are brought out, is a real sweetheart. “Stella saved me from an abusive relationship—she opened my eyes and showed me what true love really is. Anyone that meets her and gets to know her, knows of her ‘powers.’ She is one of the kindest dogs I have ever met,” Jennifer said. She’s truly a special and loyal dog!

Stella

10. JJ and Gonzo, dog parent: John G. JJ is a 6-year-old miniature pinscher adopted from a litter in Inglewood. He loves sleeping under the covers and he always finds the warmest, softest place to take naps. “The first night we got him, we tried to put him in a crate, but he cried, so I slept next to him all night with my arm around him,” John said.

JJ

JJ has gone running with John almost every day for the past six years. (Photo courtesy of John G.)

Gonzo is a 4-year-old Pomeranian/Terrier mix adopted from a rescue organization that found his mother and five siblings abandoned in Orange County. He loves playing fetch in the house with the same red rubber toy—which they call “Chewy.” Despite his age, everyone thinks Gonzo is still a puppy.

Gonzo

“My favorite thing about Gonzo is the wonderful greeting I get every time I come home,” John said. “He is overcome with joy and jumps and licks me like a lunatic whether I’ve been gone two weeks or two minutes.” (Photo courtesy of John G.)

11. Olive, dog parent: Sandra K. Olive met Sandra K. while in a wire pen at a pet adoption near Larchmont Farmers Market in Los Angeles. Olive loves to dig (especially at the beach), sprint for tennis balls, and thinks both popcorn and string cheese are delicious.

Olive

Olive with Sandra and her husband on their wedding day this past June. “She’s like the queen of puppy parkour. She’s as fast as a whippet, she’s an expert beggar, and loves to wrestle with likeminded pups,” Sandra said. (Photo courtesy of Sandra K.)

“Though at first a little resentful of my executive decision-making, it only took my husband a couple months to completely fall in love the way I had,” Sandra said. “And now we're those dog owners. The ones who tell stories about their dogs, and show pictures of them at dinner parties, and talk about their poop.”

6 Ways to Organize Your Eating Habits

WhattoEat_TiesthatShineWhether you’re eating meatless or are a die-hard meat-lover, these organizational tips inspired by our fans make for a clean-cut meal plan.

1. Have a kitchen-refresh day each season and make sure to take inventory of everything in both your pantry and fridge. And we mean everything. “Taking the occasional inventory of my entire kitchen is the only thing that keeps me on track sometimes.” —@thegoodfooddiet

2. Use the What To Eat Pad to try meal prepping each week—it saves you time and money. “We save so much moola grocery shopping when we know exactly what to buy!” —@lawlerslovelies

(Pic above by instagram.com/tiesthatshine)

3. Go one step further and customize your What to Eat Pad to fit your needs. A few ideas:

Add dates for the week to the left of each column.
Color-code different types of dishes or cuisines (ex. red pen for meat, green pen for veggies or blue pen for Italian, pink for Thai) so you can see what’s coming up and areas where you can mix it up.
Note when you’ll be having guests over for dinner or when you’re not cooking at all.

4. Track what you’ve consumed with the What I Ate Pad. It tracks your water intake too, so you can make sure you stay hydrated! “This and #MyFitnessPal has been keeping me on track.” —@authorchrisalex

5. Check your grocery list off ahead of time with the All Out Of Pad so you know exactly what you need when you go to the store. It cuts your time spent at the store and decreases the chance of impulse buys. “I love this ready-made grocery list that makes it super easy to get what you need.” —@andthencamebaby

(FYI The All Out Of Pad comes in 5 different colors.)

6. Keep your What to Eat Pad and All Out Of Pad on your fridge so the whole household can see it (there’s a magnet on them!) and can check what’s for dinner. Your fridge is a great reflection of your personality, so snap a “Fridgie” for the world to see. “Introducing: The Fridgie. It’s like a selfie, but for your refrigerator. #fridgie” —@laurendwills

Behind the “LICK”

LICK PhotoshootWe recently joined creative forces with internationally recognized animal photographer Ty Foster (who specializes in dogs) and Shark Pig Productions for a pop-up photoshoot at Lake Hollywood Park. We invited dog owners and their precious pups to sit for their very own dog portrait in the spirit of our newly released LICK book. Check out all the slobbery and undeniably silly canines in mid-lick!

Hollywood Sign

Our view of the Hollywood sign from Lake Hollywood Park.

A day at the quintessential Los Angeles spot turned out to be a huge success as we captured 57 dogs in mid-lick from sunrise to sunset—it’s amazing what can happen with a jar of peanut butter!

Trip Fontaine LICK Photoshoot

Trip Fontaine was so preoccupied with the peanut butter, he almost “tripped” off the bench!

And if that wasn’t enough, our precious pooches were treated to their very own craft services table. Got to keep the talent happy, right?

Dog Craft Service

Our cuddly canines were treated to doggy biscuits, cookies, cupcakes, and donuts from local Venice doggy hot spot, The Dog Bakery (http://www.thedogbakery.com).

We couldn’t have cast the photoshoot with better talent if we wanted to! The wide range of dog breeds made it all the more fun: from Pugs to Golden Retrievers, Yorkshire Terriers to German Shepherds, Pitbulls to Labradors, and Beagles to Golden Doodles (and much more), each dog really let their personality shine through. Check out some of the four-legged stars below.
