The story behind SHROUD OF EVIL DI Horton Mystery re-issued

Shroud of Evil (DI Andy Horton #11) Shroud of Evil by Pauline Rowson

Hello, Just thought I'd let you know a little bit more about this re-issued Inspector Andy Horton mystery. This mystery novel explores the corrosiveness of secrets. It plunges the flawed and rugged detective, Andy Horton, into a complex murder investigation in which he is forced to withhold vital information because of his own secret and his fear of exposure, even though he knows that in doing so he is putting his professional career on the line.

What drives people to keep secrets? Is it out of shame, or from fear, or guilt? Is it for safety and security? For the protection of oneself or of others? Is it to preserve a way of life, or for sanity or vanity? How far would you go to protect a secret? Would you risk your job for it, your friends your family? Would you kill for it?

In SHROUD OF EVIL there are many secrets. Why does private investigator Jasper Kenton keep so much of his private life secret from his business partner, Eunice Swallows? What are the secrets between ophthalmic consultant Brett Veerman and his lonely wife, Thelma, which trap them in a cold and hostile marriage? Why is someone forced to kill in order to keep those secrets? And why doesn’t Andy Horton tell his boss, the ice maiden, DCI Lorraine Bliss, about his secret – the fact that he’s trying to uncover the truth behind his mother’s disappearance over thirty years ago? Why does he withhold vital information from the head of the major crime team, Detective Superintendent Uckfield?

Along with secrets come lies, and where there are secrets and lies there will be exploitation. It is this exploitation that ultimately leads to murder in SHROUD OF EVILl.

Withholding a secret can hurt, so can revealing it. For Horton revealing his quest to uncover the truth of his mother’s disappearance means exposing his emotions, something he’s learned the hard way never to do because it would make him vulnerable and vulnerability is there to be exploited by others.

Secrets can be kept for years, as they have been by those involved in the murder investigation in SHROUD OF EVIL but it is one person’s determination to expose a secret and exploit it for his own gain that rips apart the fabric of many lives. And once a secret is exposed nothing is ever the same again.

"A compelling protagonist and mounting suspense make the book hard to put down." Publishers Weekly

The new DI Andy Horton in A Deadly Wake

A Deadly Wake: An Inspector Andy Horton Mystery (The Inspector Andy Horton Crime Novels Book 15) A Deadly Wake: An Inspector Andy Horton Mystery by Pauline Rowson

Just wanted to leave a review as the author. Readers have long been desperate to know the truth behind the disappearance of Andy's mother when he was a child of ten and I'm not spoiling it by saying that here at last all is revealed. DI Andy Horton’s investigations into the disappearance of his mother, Jennifer, over thirty years ago, has been touched upon in many of the Horton novels, in which he has unearthed some startling revelations. In this, the fifteenth in the Horton series, there are more surprises to come. For those who have not read the other novels, to help the reader quickly catch up on the mystery of Jennifer’s disappearance, and to accompany Horton on his final journey in his quest to get to the truth, I have included a prologue. I have also included a cast of characters who are connected, in some way, with the Jennifer Horton mystery. I hope my readers enjoy the new Andy Horton.

Undercurrent, DI Andy Horton at the Scene of Crime on a wet August night

Undercurrent Inspector Andy Horton crime novel A wet August night and Inspector Andy Horton is returning from London to Portsmouth when police cars on blue lights race past him on the motorway. Nothing unusual in that but as Horton heads for the small yacht on which he lives he sees the police vehicles pulled up outside Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard and draws to a halt.

Read about the inspiration behind Undercurrent, see the photographs and read an extract

What's on in August 2019

It might be summer outside but in my mind I'm deep in winter with the second Inspector Alun Ryga 1950 set mystery. In fact it's almost Christmas! Perhaps it will help to keep me cool as the temperature rises. The first Inspector Ryga mystery, DEATH IN THE COVE is now available to pre-order in paperback, on Kindle, Kobo and as an audio book. It is set in 1950 England, a country still struggling to come to terms peace in the grip of austerity and rationing.

August also gives me the chance to feature two of my DI Andy Horton crime novels set during that month - the summer heat is obviously causing a crime wave for my flawed and rugged detective with a high crime rate in his home coastal city of Portsmouth, England!

Introducing Inspector Alun Ryga in a brand new mystery series

Introducing the latest fictional sleuth - Scotland Yard's Inspector Alun Ryga DEATH IN THE COVE an Inspector Ryga mystery by Pauline Rowson DEATH
IN THE COVE introduces Inspector Alun Ryga. It is set in 1950, England,
a country still suffering the physical and mental scars of six years of
war in the grip of austerity and rationing. Recently promoted to
Inspector at Scotland Yard, Ryga,a former Merchant Navy seaman and
German prisoner-of-war is despatched to the Island of Portland in Dorset
to solve an unusual and baffling case.

The 1950s is a fascinating period where memories of the war are very
strong, and the fear of more world conflicts haunt people. Society and
policing in the 1950s was vastly different to today, no mobile phones,
no dashing about and no computers so it was extremely interesting to
research and write.

How did you come up with DI Horton, Art Marvik and Inspector Ryga?

Pauline Rowson I like heroes. I make no apology for that and being married to a former veteran and fire fighter I had plenty of material to choose from when creating my crime busting fictional heroes - the flawed and rugged fictional detective, DI Andy Horton; the likeable, smart, tough, but all too human hero, Art Marvik and my new 1950 Scotland Yard detective, Inspector Alun Ryga who makes his debut in DEATH IN THE COVE on 26 September 2019 ( available for pre-order).

The secret of successful writing is in the revisions

Pauline Rowson with A Killing Coast, DI Andy Horton mystery So you've finished writing that novel, well done. You're immensely proud of yourself and so you should be. It is a huge achievement but far from being the end it is probably only the beginning. I say probably because yes, there are some writers past and present, who can write a perfect first draft but even then I bet they will have revised as they've gone along, or their editor has suggested revisions. I've learned over the many years of writing (and the many years of struggling to get published) that the secret to successful writing is in the revisions.
