On Prologues & Epilogues

On Prologues & Epilogues

Wikipedia defines a Prologue as…

an opening to a story that establishes the context and gives background details, often some earlier story that ties into the main one, and other miscellaneous information

An Epilogue is the opposite, in that it comes at the end of the story and “rounds things off” or adds context to the ending.

Some of my books have prologues. Not all, but some. Same goes for epilogues.

Kissed by a Rose has both a prologue and an epilog...

Halfway Through

Halfway Through

I’m about halfway through my first read through/edit of A Wounded Heart. Most changes so far have been pretty minor – although I have split chapter 14 in two, which means the book is now at 29 chapters and a prologue.

But…

I’m not completely sure if I’m going to include the prologue or not. It was a fairly late addition and started as an epilogue, but I moved it to the start of the book to foreshadow the main plot.

Just like the prologue and epilogue in A Good Man,...

A Wounded Heart – First Draft Complete!

So, having made the decision that AWH wouldn’t be the final book in Paul’s story, I expected to be able to bring this volume to a conclusion—I’ll leave it to others to eventually decide if it’s a satisfying conclusion—within a couple of chapters and maybe ten to twenty thousand words.

That was when the manuscript was at 80,000 words. It’s now at 104,000 and I could easily write another ten or twenty thousand words on top of this to get to my “end point” I envisaged.

But I haven’t done ...

A Good Long While

It’s been a good long while since I posted anything on this site that wasn’t just a “sorry I’ve been absent” post or a status update of current projects. And that’s partly because when I’ve had “something to say” I’ve said it on a different blog.

In a post on that other blog, I wrote about how paying the annual invoice for my web hosting and domains package led me to set up multiple WordPress installations. And so, even though “back in the day”, as they say, I regularly wrote on here about al...

Announcement – “A Wounded Heart”

photo of man wearing hooded jacket in front of body of water

It’s been eight years since I published the second book in the Paul Robertson Saga, “A Tortured Soul.” Eight very long years that has seen a lot of changes in my life, in me personally, and in the world at large.

I began writing the third, and what I had hoped would be the final book, immediately after finishing ATS. And I’ve been working on it ever since. I’ve been distracted by other projects. I’ve hit roadblocks in the story. I’ve found time to write to be difficult to come by.

GTA ...

Do you Trust Chloë?

Chloë Goodman is a significant character in the Westmouthshire Universe. She is the female lead in Kissed by a Rose, She is mentioned a few times in Eternally & Evermore, makes a fleeting cameo appearance in A Good Man when Paul & Clarissa visit the university campus and a longer, more significant appearance in A Tortured Soul—a pivotal appearance, actually.

She is mentioned in both The Lies We Lead and The Truths We Live for reasons that should be obvious if you’ve read both of those books a...

Westmouthshire Universe Timeline

I’ve been asked a few times now where my various novels and short stories fit in with the wider timeline of the Westmouthshire Universe.

All of my shorts aside from one or two are part of the WMSU and I have a spreadsheet that I’ve been working on that has both a simple timeline in it and a more detailed year on year calendar (which isn’t complete).

I also have another spreadsheet which serves as a database of which characters appear in which stories and in what capacity, and the ages of s...

Sorry, It’s been a while…

I seem to do this a lot, don’t I? Apologise for my absence. But what are you going to do? Sue me? It’s not like you’re paying for this shit. And not many people are, so… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Hey, look at that, I used an emoji in a blog post. Thanks for the Emoji keyboard, Microsoft.

Seriously though, I started my Patreon back in September last year with great intentions. Then, as usual, life happens and the Patreon just kind of got forgotten. Which was fine actually, because no one had signed up anyway so it’...
