What Outlander Has Taught Me: Passion by Jenna Jaxon

outlander-1x07-the-wedding-jamie-and-claire-kiss-sonya-heaney

Now we get down to the meat of the subject of heroes. Passion.

If your hero is not passionate about the heroine, about a friend, about his family, his sister, someone, then he is not hero material. Heroes must have passion. The three heroes I’ve been speaking of, Hawkeye, William Wallace, and Jamie Fraser, ooze passion every time they appear on-screen or on the page. Not just the sex, but the intensity with which they lives their lives, with which they fight for honor, with which they defend their loves, that is the passion that makes a hero.

Passion is a strong and barely controlled emotion, therefore, whatever emotion the hero displays he can be passionate about it. And a good hero will be passionate about many things. Passion in and of itself is appealing to women. Women want men who have a passionate side. Heroines scarcely ever feel a wet fish is swoon-worthy. And the intensity of emotions is attractive to us, because a man who can exhibit a passion for one thing, means the man has feelings that can be tapped, channeled into a passion for the woman in his life. I fell in love with my husband because of the passion with which he played the piano. I realized that if he could be that passionate over a piece of music, he very likely could turn that passion toward me.

Now, the hero who is a passionate lover is also tops on a heroine’s list. And my three examples are no exception. Hawkeye in Last of the Mohicans has the devastatingly passionate kiss (and much more presumably off camera) with Cora. The lighting, the music, Daniel Day-Lewis all conspire to make that one of the most passionate love scenes in my opinion.

William Wallace in Braveheart shows his passion for his wife in their midnight wedding and later a different passion in his liaison with the Princess. This hero seems more subdued, save when he looks at these women. Still, it tugs on the heartstrings how much and how well he loved his wife for so long.

Finally, Jamie Fraser in Outlander. The episode “The Wedding” was perhaps the most keenly anticipated in the series and did not disappoint. This series, because of its venue, is able to show much more explicit passion and sex than the other two. Still, the deep emotions come from the characters and Jamie’s depth of passion and sacrifice for his family, his clan, and ultimately for Claire, makes him one of the most memorable romance heroes in the history of the romance novel.

All in all, I have learned a lot about what women want from a hero using these three particular romance heroes. I have learned heroines/women, bottom line, want strength to be protected, intelligence to strategize them out of bad situations and keep them on their toes, compassion toward the weak and great passion toward the heroine. I only hope I can take their lessons to heart in my next manuscript.

World Daughter’s Week

This week has been World Daughters’ Week. I saw it on Facebook the other day and I thought what a great idea. It caught me unawares so next year I will have a big plan. Perhaps a tea party for daughters and granddaughters too!

Daughters' WeekI loved this and thought it beautiful. So I’m posting it here. I thought something else was beautiful that I came across – my daughter Cera on my left and my daughter Julia on my right on her wedding day.

Mom and daughtersIf you have a daughter or daughters that inspire you, shout out their names and tell us why you love them so much in the comment box. We’d be happy to hear all about them.

Back in the (Writing) Saddle by Stacy Hoff

horse bucking bronco

I love writing. But geez, writing is hard! Despite the fact I had a new release come out this past February (DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC), I am already working on another novel. Unfortunately, my draft is progressing at the speed of a sloth on sleeping pills. Every word on the page is a triumph, because it’s taking ten thousand years to put down each one. At this pace, my newest story will get done in the year 4045.

Writing is the one of the “highs” of my life. I love creating “happily ever afters.” Regardless, crafting new characters and plot lines can still be daunting. Trying to do things “right” can sometimes seize me up. I’m afraid deadlines and word-count goals may stymie me even more. I write best when I’m unfettered.

I have author friends who tell me that I’m doing things backwards. They say that word-count goals loosen up a writer and keep them inspired. I am now wondering—can inspiration be found in a word-count goal? Or can a high word-count happen only if one connects to their muse?

I’d love your ideas, because it’s time for me to get back in the (writing) saddle.

Just Can’t Write Today by Heather Novak

What to do when you just can’t write?

Last week I had planned to finish edits on my manuscript, and then life happened. It was one hit after another and my writing time was filled with trips to the doctors, trying to find help for a sick fiancé overseas and comforting him, and some major problems on the health front for myself and dear friends. At the end of the day, I ended up doing more harm than good to my story, which is why I always save copies before making major changes. (Thankfully, I was able to save me from myself!)

So now what? How do you stay in the story when you can’t be trusted to work on the story? Even if I wasn’t writing, I made several outlines and was able to pinpoint trouble spots. I’m a seat-of-my-pants writer, but when editing I find charting my book helpful. After two days, I streamlined the book’s action.

Then I watched documentaries similar to my research to help bring in that missing human element. I baked while listening to my favorite audiobook, which allowed me to decompress, and actually even had me thinking about my story.

Sometimes life will get in the way of you physically writing, but writing in your head still counts as long as you get it down on paper the moment you can. Whether or not you’re at your computer, you need to be working on your book every day.

Keep at it friends! I believe in you.

On this day in 1927 – The first long-distance TV transmission was sent from Washington, DC, to New York City. The audience saw an image of Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover.

Your Point of Happy

A couple nights ago, I gave my kids a bubble bath. You would have thought I opened the kingdom doors to candy heaven and I couldn’t help but wonder why most of the people I encounter on a daily basis are so far from this point of happiness.

Now don’t get me wrong, kids are far from happy features all the time and I don’t envy my sons’ teachers in any way. In fact, dropping my eldest off at preschool gives me anxiety simply because it is pure chaos. Still, I truly believe my kids live life to the fullest each day. They are all in at all times.

There is a saying about not taking life too seriously. I never got it as a kid, but as an adult, I get it all too easily. I’m also a “fixer” so that makes life even more complex as my tendency is to want to turn the world right side up, even if it isn’t my job–yes, I do need to exercise a lot of self control.

So where am I going with all this? I guess I’m saying a lot of things and meaning more…don’t take life too seriously, find your point of happy in real life and spend as much time there as possible, choose your battles because life is short and it is more important to be living than fighting unless you are fighting to live and lastly, help those you care about do the same.

Happy writing that week!

Some Snow May Fall Paranormal-Scope

In each life, some snow may fall. For some that won’t be metaphorically speaking. Be cautious this week with the weird weather.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

Hobbits don’t like paperwork. Do one piece at a time so it’s not overwhelming. Sometimes paperwork is necessary to make things easier later on.

Taurus:

Werewolves don’t mind the snow. They find it invigorating. Smile even when you don’t feel like it. Your smile will invigorate those around you.

Gemini:

Elves are fussy often analyzing everything. Don’t make yourself crazy with over analyzing. Let some things go.

Cancer:

Pixies sometimes get scattered flitting from place to place. Practice your focus and get one project done at a time.

Leo:

Vampires can be too reclusive. Don’t isolate yourself from other. Communications with friends and family will work to your advantage.

Virgo:

Goblins know a lot of things. You do too. Practice patience. Not everyone gets what you do. People learn in their own time.

Libra:

Leprechauns are pros at establishing a foundation for generations to build on. You are solid and knowledgeable. Others know they can depend on you. This will help your career.

Scorpio:

Mermaids know it’s best not to swim alone. Being alone is not in your best interest now. Hang out with colleagues and friends. Expand your friendship circle.

Sagittarius:

Griffons travels in flocks. It’s more fun and there is support when you need it.

Capricorn:

Faeries have wisdom to share. People will ask you questions. Be prepared to answer in a helpful and practical way.

Aquarius:

Shapeshifters have a dark and moody side. Don’t be down. Things are about to change again. Do things that will lighten your mood. Watch for new opportunities.

Pisces:

Werewolves love a good joke. Let your good humor lift the spirits of others.

What Outlander Taught Me About Heroes: Compassion by Jenna Jaxon

Outlander_Cast_Jamie_420x560_v2

Jamie Fraser Hero of Outlander

Surprisingly, I wouldn’t have thought compassion ranked very high on the list of traits for a hero, even though it ranks high on my own personal list. Apparently it’s a very popular trait with other readers as well.

Compassion is when the hero shows consideration for others. Of course he will show kindness toward the heroine—that’s a given. But he will quite often go out of his way to show his concern for others. He sympathizes with another character, perhaps even with a very minor character, often below his rank or station in life. Joanna Penn, in her article “20 Tips for Writing Loveable Romance Heroes,” says “make him act with kindness and compassion toward his staff or the working classes.” We want a man who can be generous with his time, money, and concern for others.

In Catherine Lanigan’s book, Writing the Great American Romance Novel, she says point blank, “It is impossible for the hero to be the hero without compassion. Without compassion for others who do not have his advantages or talents, the hero would be a cold fish or possibly a psychopath.” The hero can show compassion in many varied ways. His liking and patience for animals and small children are an excellent way to display his concern for the weak. Lanigan insists that the hero must love his mother, no matter how bad her character is. And she makes the point, and it’s a valid one, that “compassion fully realized is love.”

outlander pilloryThe moment in Outlander when Jamie shows his compassion for both the heroine, Claire, and others, is one of my favorite in the series. I watched that episode, “The Way Out,” over and over just for this one scene. It’s where Jamie pulls the nail out of a child’s ear who’s been nailed to a pillory. He could have gotten into great trouble for doing it, but for the child’s sake (he’d have had to rip his own ear from the nail) he does it without hesitation. There are other instances where Jamie shows compassion throughout the series and the books, but this is the one that speaks loudest to me.

A compassionate man is very attractive because we value a person who will put himself out, delay his own needs, in order to help another less fortunate than he.

Do you have a favorite scene in which a hero shows his compassion and wins your heart thereby?

I Love You, Tony Bennett!

By Peter Chiapperino: a concert photographer in Lexington, Kentucky (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)%5D, via Wikimedia Commons

Last night I had the joy and privilege of hearing Tony Bennett sing. He appeared in the arena of Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT. All he had to do was walk on stage in front of a full house and receive a standing ovation. Then he started to sing and he was even better. My favorites were such The Shadow of Your Smile, Taking A Chance on Love, Our Love is Here to Stay, and I Left My Heart in San Francisco. He had standing ovations throughout the evening.

I realized that all my favorite songs of his have to do with love. What a wonderful evening! Tony is 89 and still singing so beautifully. I noticed that the ages were mixed in the audience. How gratifying it must be to sing for all the generations.

My husband and I got the concert tickets for our wedding anniversary, and we had a great time. Even after Tony left the stage, people still were applauding.  All I can say is I left my heart with Tony Bennett!

Rachel Sharpe’s Fascination with Film by Stacy Hoff

Stacy_Cartoon_v2 Hello Passionate Readers! Today I have a guest, crime author Rachel Sharpe. Her stories unfold like movies. A PI flick that would make any film noir buff proud. Read on to learn about Rachel and her fascination with film!

movie watchers

FASCINATION OF FILM

Whether it’s the big screen or small one, there is something about film that draws interest, captivating an audience like nothing else. From comedies and tragedies to everything in between, people love stories and enjoy watching them performed. While this love affair can be traced back to Shakespeare, the ancient Greeks, and even further than that, all in the form of plays, with the introduction of film came a level of enjoyment few other mediums, apart from books, have ever reached.

I, too, share this passion. I have always enjoyed movies, especially the old black and white classics. My husband and I recently visited southern California and took several studio tours and it was from those tours the idea originated that Jordan James could solve a murder on the set of a television show. People love watching movies and television shows, but few have the opportunity to witness them being made.

I took what I learned on this trip to help flesh out the reality of the action that goes on behind the scenes of a television show. Add in one murder, a gorgeous location, in this case the Rocky Mountains, and an eager PI, and you have Bitter Retribution, book three of the Jordan James, PI series. Lights, camera, action!

BITTER RETRIBUTION (JORDAN JAMES, PI BOOK THREE)

Bitter Retirbution cover

“What started out as a star-studded vacation has turned into a sensational avalanche…”

When private investigator Jordan James decided to join her best friend on the set of her hit television series in the Rocky Mountains, she had no idea she would become a key player in a murder mystery more suited for the big screen than the slopes. With one actor dead and a killer on the loose, can Jordan uncover the culprit before another victim makes headlines on Hollywood Minute?

BITTER RETRIBUTION EXCERPT

“Maybe it’ll be okay?” he repeated, his green eyes widening. “Have you decided to eighty-six common sense? Jordan, you watched somebody die today! You yourself said he was murdered. What makes you think everything’s gonna be all sunshine and lollipops with a killer on the loose?”

Amazon link for “BITTER RETRIBUTION” http://www.amzn.com/B015YS0O94

See below for more from the Jordan James, PI Series – COLD AMBITION and LOST DISTINCTION!!!

COLD AMBITION (JORDAN JAMES, PI BOOK ONE)

ColdAmbition400 (1)

“It was my life-long dream to become a private eye. Little did I know that with my very first case, that dream would become a life-threatening nightmare…”

When Jordan James decided to embark on a career as a private investigator, she never could have imagined that a chance encounter would lead to her staring down the barrel of a gun on the roof’s edge of a high-rise building. As she begins to investigate her first case, the puzzling murder of a prominent businessman that has left Boston’s finest mystified for more than two decades, she finds herself suddenly immersed in a treacherous underworld brimming with betrayal, raw greed, and political subterfuge of international proportions. In the midst of this, she discovers she is falling for her mysterious client despite the hints of his dark past. Can this feisty Southern girl with a penchant for trouble solve this baffling case or is she doomed to become another tragic chapter in an international conspiracy?

COLD AMBITION EXCERPT

Perilously perched on the edge of a high-rise that offered a spectacular view of Faneuil Hall is most certainly not how I pictured my untimely demise. Call me old-fashioned, but I was kind of hoping to go out in a more peaceful manner. Unfortunately, things don’t happen exactly how you plan them, especially when your chosen profession has the uncanny ability to thrust you into the icy hands of Death. I stood there, inching toward the edge, wondering how it came to this point. But forgive me; I have a tendency to digress. Let me start at the beginning.

Amazon link for “COLD AMBITION” http://www.amzn.com/B00L2OLQPG/

LOST DISTINCTION (JORDAN JAMES, PI BOOK TWO)

LostDistinction400

“It all started with a favor…”

When private investigator Jordan James agreed to search for the missing son of a U.S. Ambassador, she didn’t realize she was walking into a case one hundred years in the making. The deeper she delves into this unusual assignment, the more shocking, and the more dangerous, it becomes. With time running out and lives at stake, Jordan must race to identify the culprit of an elaborate plot while also uncovering a far more personal truth too intimate to ignore…

LOST DISTINCTION EXCERPT

“So, when was the last time you saw Arthur?” I asked as the guys cheered when one of Stuart’s sons scored a touchdown with George’s help.

Michelle stared past the men. “I guess the last time I saw him was at Easter. Since Mr. and Mrs. Cross couldn’t make it back from London in time, we went over to Stuart’s house in Falmouth. I was surprised to see him there.”

“Why? Does he usually avoid family holidays?”

She clapped when Rick carried one of the twins over the “goal line” for a touchdown. She looked back at me and shrugged. “To be honest, I haven’t seen Arthur many times in all the years I’ve been married to Eddie. He lives and works in Middletown but just always seems too busy to come around. Eddie never gave me specifics, but I think Arthur tries to stay away from his family for some reason.”

“He didn’t say why?”

“No,” she shook her head. “Can’t say I blame him…”

I found myself more confused every time I learned more about this situation. As I sat there, I considered all the things I knew as fact. First, Arthur Cross was missing and had been missing for several days. Second, his family was concerned enough about his disappearance that they felt it necessary for his parents to fly in from London, but they did not want to involve the police as it might generate unwanted publicity. Third, they were going to a lot of trouble pretending like nothing was wrong.

I looked across the yard and saw the Crosses watching their children and grandchildren with absolute enjoyment. The last thing I knew was by far the most troubling fact of all. As I sat there, it became crystal clear that this family was hiding a secret. What I didn’t know at the time was how great the secret was and how many lives its revelation would affect, including my own.
