The Shining Sea Paranormal-Scope
Yesterday the sunlight sparkled on the sea. I can’t wait to see what today will bring.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
Faeries are blissful beings. They tend to rescue others in ways unexpected. Your true heart is being revealed.
Taurus:
Elves are not very patient. Circumstances may test your patience this week. Taking time will bear fruit.
Gemini:
Goblins are gossips. Don’t trust third party news.
Cancer:
Gnomes are planners. Don’t wait til the last minute to get that gift for a special something.
Leo:
Aslan knows not to trust first appearances. So should you.
Virgo:
When stress gets a dragon down, they go on an outing they know will be fun. The change of scenery will rejuvenate you.
Libra:
Shapeshifters are good at tightening their belts. Review your budget and cut back to necessities.
Scorpio:
Werewolves overwork. It’s part of their nature. But when your personal life is flagging it’s time to stay on the clock. Don’t ignore those that care about you.
Sagittarius:
Fireflies are reflective in a nature. It’s time to look inward and be more contemplative.
Capricorn:
Pixies delight in planning escapes. Plan an adventure for yourself.
Aquarius:
Griffons chew on problems. Money could be a concern you can remedy with temporary cuts. An opportunity is coming your way. Watch for it.
Pisces:
Mermaids are clear when it comes to goal. Develop a step-by-step approach to attain what you want.

Health and Writing
In July of 2015 one of my ovaries ruptured, requiring immediate surgery. A few short weeks after the surgery I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. To say my entire world flipped upside down and turned inside out is an understatement.
The surgery was the first slap from reality telling me I needed to take better care of myself. That point was brought to a clear, unquestionable fact with the cancer diagnosis.
What exactly did I need to do to start down the road to taking better care of me? It wasn’t as though I didn’t have an idea. Lord knows my husband told me as often as possible about how unhealthy my habits were. It wasn’t that I was making the worst food choices, though I did eat more sweets than I should.
But I also didn’t exercise regularly and I worked long hours at a day job that had me sitting at a computer or in meetings all day. I also started my days at 5 or 5:30 by writing for an hour or more, then rushing out the door for work. Then I ended my days by sitting at my computer writing for an hour or two.
I was not making time to care for myself. And though I was very productive, pumping out 3-5 books and several short stories in a year, I was not doing right by myself.
After the surgery I took up meditating, which I still do at the start of everyday. I began walking everyday, which was all I could do for exercise for several weeks. Then I promised to eat better and work fewer hours.
Then I got the cancer diagnosis, and shit got serious!
Could I possibly work a full time job and take care of myself, my home, my family, and write without driving myself into an early grave? Um? No. Nope. I could not.
Beyond panicking about how I’d manage all that I started wondering what my purpose in life was. What did God want me to do? Though I’ve not come close to figuring out my purpose, I know for sure he did not intend me to spend my life staring at a computer and working like a dog.
I’ve made considerable changes in the last year. Some have been wonderful– like working part-time at a day job I love and spending more time with my family. Some changes have been a real struggle– like writing less. I miss writing everyday. But at this point I simply cannot spend time at the computer every single day and take care of everything else.
Happily, I’ve learned to set goals and deadlines that are achievable rather than impossible. Admittedly, I still beat myself up for not conquering the world every week. But as with everything I am a work in progress and getting comfortable with change takes time.
But if I don’t change and take better care of myself, I won’t be here to write books. So, change, here I am!
In this last week of September please consider supporting the fight against ovarian cancer by grabbing a copy of A Vampire’s Passion, Novella Three in the Romance in Central City Series. All the proceeds from this book are being donated to the Granulosa Cell Tumor Research Foundation. Granulosa Cell Tumors are a rare form of ovarian cancer, the kind I had.
Thank you for supporting the cause and remember to take good care of yourself!

Pre-Sale for Vampire Princess of New York
Vampire Princess of New York has gone up for Pre-Sale on Amazon Kindle. https://www.amazon.com/Vampire-Princess-York-Arnhem-Knights-ebook/dp/B01LWXYX1G/
I’m very excited. This full length novel about the daughter of King Max took longer to write. Life certainly happened during it. A granddaughter was born. (I was 2nd birthing coach.) My husband and I celebrated 37 years of marriage. As I was going through the editing stages with my editor, I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. I think you can imagine how it breaks an author’s heart to email their editor saying, “I’m in the hospital. I’ll let you know as soon as I’m out.” I was down; then I was back up and editing with her again. So this book, a book of the heart, was created with a huge amount of energy from everyone involved–my editor, publisher, cover artist, format designer, my husband, family and friends, and others my overwhelmed mind is forgetting. My apologies.
Here is the blurb:
Noblesse is the daughter of the Vampire King of New York Maximillion Vander Meer. In the over two hundred years, she’s been a vampire, Noblesse has never found a true love or discovered what happened to her mother who disappeared just prior to the French Revolution.
Noblesse has to choose between two men. Both profess their love. Both are keeping a secret from her. One wants to destroy her, and one wants to love her forever. But which one?
*
Being a princess, even a vampire princess if complicated. Isn’t everything these days? Oh my, what Noblesse goes through! I do have to advise that this is an intensely romantic book. I write down exactly what my characters do in my dreams. Laughs.
I do want to remind everyone that this is a Pre-Sale and the Kindle version of Vampire Princess of New York comes out on October 5th. If you want it sent to your Kindle on that day, this is the way to go. My publisher also sent me a surprise for all the subscribers to Kindle Unlimited. Now I’m not going to say more, as I tiptoe away to write. Just follow the link: https://www.amazon.com/Vampire-Princess-York-Arnhem-Knights-ebook/dp/B01LWXYX1G/

Release Week Storm by Stacy Hoff
There’s a storm a’ brewin’. And it’s my anxiety. No matter how many times I have survived release day (three other times, to be exact), the roll-out process makes me a bit nuts. I have so much to do. So little time. And so much stomach acid. (If I pop several more purple pills, maybe I’ll be able to drink hi-test coffee again. A girl can hope.)
Some aspects of release day I can control: social media announcements, an e-mail flurry, blog tour line-ups, etc.
Some aspects of release day I cannot control: number of reviews on Amazon, amount of sales generated, amount of times Amazon suggests my newest book to readers.
I am a type “A” personality. Maybe that’s why my “day job” is as a lawyer. The world of contracts is a world I can control quite a bit. The world of writing? Not so much.
The great freefall that is fiction writing can be quite a turbulent journey. What keeps me jumping out of the proverbial airplane is my deep love for writing romance. It’s because I make my characters plunge into their relationships, that I must bravely plunge into a relationship, too – one with my readers.
The best thing I can do before release week is to remember the number one rule – not only of writing but for life itself – breathe!
What do you do to prepare for something big?

The Good Side of Being Sick by Heather Novak
As my wedding date creeps closer and closer (15 days when this blog is posted!), my schedule is making me claustrophobic. Everything needs my attention RIGHT NOW! Everyone needs my opinion on everything. My to-do list is so long I can’t even look at it without heart palpitations.
Therefore, when I had a severe allergic reaction to food earlier this month (yay food allergies!), everything went South. Like, molten lava south. My skin hurt, I couldn’t eat anything but soup and oatmeal for a week, and my head pounded so bad I couldn’t see straight. This does not a productive person make. (Side note: For all you people who doubt that food allergies exist, let me ASSURE YOU, trying to convince myself it “wasn’t real” didn’t work…)
After trying to fight against what my body needed for two days and making everything worse, I caved and sprawled on the couch after work all week and all weekend. I canceled every single plan, got my flu shot (because hey, I was already feeling terrible and I didn’t even notice the arm pain!), and downloaded a stack of ebooks/audiobooks.
It. Was. Glorious.
I didn’t feel guilty about taking “me time” or about not answering my phone when family member #48 called me six times in one hour. I didn’t feel guilty about not running errands or neglecting to work on the wedding program. I didn’t feel guilty for consuming three audiobooks in two days as I dozed on the couch.
I spent time in 1800’s London and Scotland (I CAN’T HELP IT! I’m obsessed with Sarah MacLean), I watched a ridiculous about of Treehouse Masters on Animal Planet (the things that dude can do with wood is amazing!), and I ate so much soup I was going to turn into soup.
Outside of the being absolutely miserable part, it was a fantastic break to the hectic weeks that are approaching. With my day job’s busy season reaching fever pitch, I find myself ready to tackle it all after a week of rest.
Next time, however, I’m going to give myself permission to take that week off…without being sick.
Moral of the story: Be kind to yourself. Give yourself a break. And when things go south? Grab a book.
On this day in 1862 – U.S. President Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. It stated that all slaves held within rebel states would be free as of January 1, 1863.

Living with Our Differences
I have a lot of questions today but not necessarily a lot of answers. If you’ve read my posts, at some point or other, you’ve probably heard me talk about how I love podcasts. This week, I heard a couple podcasts—Marketplace Weekend and This American Life where there were discussions about segregation and integration in schools and how integration in many ways yields better results from an economic perspective due to the resources and facilities that students are provided as they are integrated into schools in higher income neighborhoods.
Logically, this makes sense and it got me thinking about my day job and really a lot of interactions we seem to have. In many ways, we humans seems to live in silos. In my day job, we talk about this all the time. One department doesn’t know what the other does versus another and so on. We talk about the sharing of resources but there is all this fear that people will be spread too thin and therefore unable to utilize the resources well, etc. I get costs and making things accessible to more folks but we seem to end up paying for those “savings” due to added inefficiencies of groups not knowing what is going on. Why do we find it so hard to see the big picture and how we all work together?
I’m sure there is some sort of science behind why we categorize and separate. After all, even computers have a limited memory. Not to mention we don’t live in a Pleasantville sort of world where we drive the same car and have the same houses. We are a species of diversity in so many ways yet in general we haven’t learned to mesh these ways to the best of our advantages. I know, that is a huge undertaking and some of it may include simple appreciation of our differences. Like I said, not any answers today, just a lot of thoughts and questions.
Happy writing this week!

Did you know?
With September being Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and my plan to donate all proceeds from September sales of A Vampire’s Passion to the Granulosa Cell Tumor Research Foundation I thought I’d provide some information about ovarian cancer awareness and then an excerpt from A Vampire’s Passion.
The following information was taken from the cancer.org website. Please visit this page for more information.
Did you know…
Ovarian Cancer accounts for 3% of cancers in women, but causes more deaths than than any other cancer of the female reproductive system?
Roughly 22,280 women will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer. About 14,240 women will die from ovarian cancer?
There are three types of ovarian cancer: epithelial, germ, and stromal cell. Epithelial is the most common, making up 85-90% of the diagnoses? Granulosa Cell Tumors are a stromal cell cancer and make up 1% of the diagnosed ovarian cancer cases.
Some symptoms of ovarian cancer are.
Bloating
Pelvic or abdominal pain
Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
Urinary symptoms such as urgency (always feeling like you have to go) or frequency (having to go often)
These symptoms are also commonly caused by benign (non-cancerous) diseases and by cancers of other organs. When they are caused by ovarian cancer, they tend to be persistent and represent a change from normal − for example, they occur more often or are more severe. If a woman has these symptoms more than 12 times a month, she should see her doctor, preferably a gynecologist.
Ladies, be sure to have you annual exams, including paps and internal examinations. Miserable as they are, they could save your life!
Here’s an excerpt from A Vampire’s Passion. This is the moment Brandt meets Rachel. They get off to a rough start!
As if by some glorious miracle the stench of everything that had ever lived and died at the end of the alley, including the rotting overflowing contents of the dumpster, vanished. The air filled with a sweet aroma, reminding Brandt of the bakery down on Sixteenth Street. She smelled like raspberry jam and fresh dough, like a warm Berliner.
Unable to stop himself he inhaled, filling his lungs with her delicious scent. His mind flooded with memory after memory of all the times he’d eaten jelly donuts. As a boy with his family before Lent, as a young man with the pretty girl next door, as a soldier, sitting on the battlefield waiting for his next orders.
Sand and grit crackled beneath her shoes as she stepped into the alley. “I know you’re in there.” Her voice quaked.
Facing Garrison and with his back turned to her, Brandt couldn’t see where Rachel was, but he could feel her. She was only a few feet from them and she was afraid. Her scent grew syrupy sweet as her anxiety level rose.
“I only want to help. Please don’t be expired.” Her fingertips grazed Brandt’s arm as she reached for the wall.
He glanced to the side, and his gaze met hers. He’d easily been able to see how pretty she was across the street, but standing beside him where he could appreciate every fine detail she was beyond beautiful.
Errant strands of hair floated around her face, having come loose from the thick ponytail hanging down her back. Long eyelashes blinked behind black-rimmed glasses. High cheekbones led to rosy cheeks then down to slightly parted full lips.
She was his most secret fantasy come to life. Every minute detail was exactly as he’d pictured. The curve of her eyebrows, the shape of her ears, the slight dimple in her chin. All of it was exactly as he’d imagined.
Sharp pangs pounded in Brandt’s chest. Then his heart stopped with a sudden thud. Four seconds later it began beating again only to come to an abrupt stop three beats later.
Her gaze went from Brandt to Garrison.
“Huh!” Her eyes widened. “What are you doing to him?” Not waiting for an answer, she reached down and picked up a broken chair that had been discarded into the alley. “Get off him.”
The chair crashed over Brandt’s back twice before he could gather his thoughts to understand what was happening. With the third whack he toppled against Garrison.
“Get off him! No one expires tonight.”
When the chair fell apart in her hands, Rachel lurched forward, pounding her fists against Brandt’s back.
“Help! Help!” Her fingernails dug into his shoulder, and she climbed up his back, snaking her arm around his neck until the skin under his chin was pinched in the crook of her elbow. “Leave him alone!”
Her fingers knotted in Brandt’s hair, seconds before she yanked, sending pain shooting across his head. His ears echoed with what he was certain had to be the battle cry of some sort of demon.
I hope you enjoyed the excerpt. Please grab a copy at one of the links below. 100% of the September sales will be given to the Granulosa Cell Tumor Research Foundation. Your purchase will help in the fight for a cure!
