New Review Calls Little Boy Blue “An Inspiring Tale”

Yesterday, MyMegaeDog uploaded this review of Little Boy Blue. It’s a personal, thoughtful review from a woman who adopted a dog through Petfinder.com and wanted to learn more about who saved him and how, just as Little Boy Blue traces Blue’s background and all the people who are fighting to save dogs like him nationwide.

Here are our favorite excerpts from the review:

“I devoured the book. I could barely put it down and even considered taking it outside with me while I walked the dogs. … Little Boy Blue and Kim Kavin have humbled me, yet again. I have once more found myself in a place where I have overwhelming gratitude to strangers that I may never be able to thank. I have found myself in a place where I am confounded by what people can do when they band together to promote one cause. I am staggered by how so many little pieces can fit together into this grander tapestry of goodwill and positive change. … Little Boy Blue comes highly recommended from me, mainly because I feel that it is an inspiring tale of what the dismal yet necessary truth can encourage people to do and what knowledge can make a person become.”

“Little Boy Blue” is “Vibrant… with Rich Insight and Detail,” says Seattle Kennel Club

The Seattle Kennel Club recently uploaded this review of Little Boy Blue. It is yet another great review for the book. Here is our favorite part:

“With rich insight and detail, Kavin writes in practical terms shorn of ideological overtones. Yet she’s at her best when personalizing her involvement, first as a journalist/pet owner, then a volunteer when transporting two dogs north, fostering them and eventually finding homes for them via a local rescue organization. In other words, talk is cheap, just do it! And she does with terrific results.”

“Little Boy Blue” Author Praises County’s Decision to Stop Using Gas Chamber

In cased you missed Little Boy Blue author Kim Kavin yesterday on CNN, there is now an official press release from publisher Barron’s about Person County Animal Control immediately stopping the use of its gas chamber in North Carolina.

“It was a sign of hope when Little Boy Blue came out to great fanfare in August, and the shelter where Blue was rescued announced that it would finally end the use of the gas chamber by summer 2013,” Kavin states in today’s press release. “Now, local officials have been forced to act much sooner thanks to continued pressure from the national media surrounding Little Boy Blue and the tireless animal activists in Person County. Yesterday’s news is absolute proof that committed citizens can make a difference for the countless homeless dogs like my boy Blue.”

The full press release from Barron’s is viewable by clicking this link: Little Boy Blue press release October 15 2012

We congratulate Person County Manager Heidi York, as well as shelter Director Ron Shaw, in taking this step toward ending the cycle of killing and creating a culture of adoption. We also congratulate them on additional changes that were announced this past weekend, including the appointment of a new adoptions coordinator to try to increase the shelter’s overall adoption rate.

As Little Boy Blue states, change begins with education. We are thrilled that this book helped to make these changes a reality.

CNN Host Randi Kaye Features “Little Boy Blue” in Follow-Up Report

Little Boy Blue was featured again this morning on CNN’s Randi Kaye show in a follow-up report to last month’s major feature.

Today’s follow-up story was based on an announcement from Person County, N.C., where Blue was rescued in 2010. The county announced soon after the book’s publication in early August that it would end the use of its gas chamber by animal control officials in summer 2013. This weekend, following continued media and community pressure, the county announced that the gas chamber will no longer be used—effective immediately.

Little Boy Blue author Kim Kavin was quoted this morning on CNN as saying, “I congratulate Person County for taking these first steps toward saving as many dogs like Blue as possible, and for using humane lethal injections when there are truly no other options. Blue and I are now turning our attention to the dozens of other taxpayer-funded, high-kill, gas chamber shelters nationwide. I am already in touch with a leading lawmaker on Capitol Hill, and you will be hearing from us on this issue across the country in early 2013.”

New Review: Little Boy Blue Explains how Dog Adoption is Washing over America like a Tsunami

Kathy Porter, a years-long rescue volunteer who writes the Healing Rescue Dogs blog, just uploaded her review of Little Boy Blue. Here are our favorite parts:

“Kim Kavin’s experience as a professional journalist makes her the perfect author for Little Boy Blue. After adopting a young (male) hound-mix dog that she names Blue, she gets curious about his background. When she finds out that he was scheduled to be killed in the gas chamber that operates out of one of the animal shelters in North Carolina, she decides to find out as much as she can about how he was saved. … Her meticulous research weaves together her personal adoption story around everything that she uncovers about how the adoption movement, washing seamlessly over our country, has become very like a tsunami.”
