Shelter Where ‘Little Boy Blue’ was Rescued Announces Phase-Out of Gas Chamber
We are thrilled to announce nationwide today that Person County Animal Control, the shelter in North Carolina where Blue was nearly killed two years ago, has announced it will phase out use of its gas chamber. The announcement comes after years of demands from local rescue advocates—and within weeks of “Little Boy Blue” being published to national media acclaim.
The full press release from our publisher, Barron’s, is viewable by clicking this link: Little Boy Blue press release, August 17, 2012
We congratulate Person County Manager Heidi York, as well as shelter Director Ron Shaw, in taking this first step toward ending the cycle of killing and creating a culture of adoption. We also congratulate them on inviting the Humane Society of the United States to help the shelter work on its relationships with rescue groups.
As “Little Boy Blue” states, change begins with education.

Dogster Calls ‘Little Boy Blue’ a “Riveting Read”
Dogster’s Julie Szabo has just uploaded an interview with “Little Boy Blue” author Kim Kavin.
Szabo calls the book “a riveting read” and talks with Kim about how she came to adopt Blue, what she has learned since becoming a foster for other rescues in need, and even how her Zodiac sign helped to make “Little Boy Blue” possible.

‘Memorize this Book Cover. I Want Every Dog Lover in America to Read this Book’
Sunbear Squad, an organization dedicated to animal welfare, has just published its review of “Little Boy Blue.” We are thrilled that the group loved the book. Here are some of our favorite lines from the review:
“Memorize this book cover. I want every dog-lover in America to read this book and pass it along to a friend… The time is right and the book is a compelling and well-researched read. An ambitious public relations schedule is planned, and I expect the book and the message will make waves.”

Little Boy Blue to “Appear” in Roxboro, North Carolina
On Saturday, September 15, author Kim Kavin and her dog Blue will be featured in a special video being created specifically to support Concert for a Cause in Roxboro, North Carolina.
Concert for a Cause is being organized by Rhonda Beach of Chances Angel Rescue and Education. Rhonda is the volunteer rescuer who saw Blue on death row in her local shelter more than two years ago, knelt down next to his cage, and got him to walk over and say hello to her. She saw that he was absolutely terrified, and she saved him by bringing him into the rescue network that ultimately led him to his home 500 miles away in New Jersey.
Kim and Blue are honored to support Rhonda’s Concert for a Cause, since proceeds will help dogs scheduled to die in the same shelter where Blue was nearly killed. That shelter, unless rescue groups intervene, has a year-after-year kill rate of about 95 percent. Many of the dogs die in a gas chamber. Events like Concert for a Cause are what help rescuers in the Roxboro area do the life-saving work that is often the only hope for wonderful dogs like Blue.

‘Dog Lovers, You are Going to Fall in Love with this Book’
Story Circle Book Reviews, which focuses on titles by women, just uploaded its review of “Little Boy Blue.” We are thrilled it is yet another strong, positive review for the book.
Here is our favorite part:
“Dog lovers, you are going to fall in love with this book. Well-written, engaging and shocking, Little Boy has information you’ll want to share with everyone you know. Too few people know the truth about America’s tax-funded animal shelters. This book will truly open people’s eyes. I hope that many will read it and that something powerful can be done to end this sad epidemic. While I supported adoption before, Little Boy Blue convinced me to never again consider buying a dog from a pet store or breeder. It also made me want to hug my own puppy.”

‘A Heart-Stopping Exposé No Animal-Lover Should Miss”
Shelf Awareness just published its review of “Little Boy Blue.” We are thrilled that it is yet another outstanding review of the book. Here is our favorite part:
“While sometimes heartrending due to the nature of the subject, Kavin’s research also turns up unexpected moments of joy and clarity. If our society is educated about the conditions created by animal overpopulation, if we are proactive about controlling breeding both in the industry and in our own backyards, and if we give rescue dogs the chance to join our families, the situation can be reversed. A well-researched blend of investigation and personal journey, Little Boy Blue is a heart-stopping exposé no animal-lover should miss.”

‘Balancing Intensive Research, Heartwarming Anecdotes, and a Passionate Dedication to the Cause’
Publisher’s Weekly just posted its review of “Little Boy Blue.” We are thrilled that it is another positive take on the book. Here is our favorite part:
“Balancing intensive research, heartwarming anecdotes, and a passionate dedication to the cause, Kavin crafts a readable and compelling depiction of the inefficacies of the taxpayer-funded shelter system and the people who have assumed the responsibility of shuttling animals across the country, from near-death to a new ‘leash’ on life.”
