GP714 Preacher Finds a Corpse - Chapter 21 29:49 minutesOn a visit to Redwine, Evan learns the Army has a longstanding claim to the Emmett place.
Chapter 21
Saturday Afternoon
Arthur Redwine Farmhouse
There would be a reckoning with Shackleton, Evan was sure of it. But he didn’t want to confront the banker until he had as much information as he could get elsewhere, particularly about the will and the land-title complications. The person who might know the most, if he could express it coherently, would be Arthur Redwine.
As Edie had suggested, Evan pulled into a gas station off Route P to ask directions to Redwine’s place. Evan didn’t recall which brand the station had sold before, but a new sign read ZipGas. He suspected his boss had made another potentially profitable investment as a reseller of surplus fuel from the big operators. But the prices here were no bargain.
The kid who worked the station was seated behind a double pane of Plexiglas with a pass-through dip for exchanging payments and receipts. He was underage, much too young not to be in school. But it was the weekend, so he was probably filling in for somebody. He looked forlorn and freezing, dressed only in a sweatshirt hoodie with a long woolen scarf wrapped several times around his neck and a stocking cap pulled down over his ears. He said he didn’t know of the Redwine place, but he punched the rural route address Evan gave him into his phone, and then he scrolled through the satellite view of Google Maps to zero in on the five ponds on the property. Evan could have done that himself, but he hadn’t guessed that entering a postal route number would result in a hit on the geographic location. The kid held his phone up to the glass so Evan could see, but it was hard to read in the glare. Evan took out his own phone and traced the same search, with the same successful result. He grinned and tipped the kid five bucks, not something he’d normally do, but in recognition of a colleague. He wondered whether the boy was a relative of the Zeds, or even one of Zip’s kids.

GP713 Preacher Finds a Corpse - Chapter 20 (21:44 minutes)Evan goes to see his old mentor Rev. Thurston, who won't let him off the hook.
Chapter 20
Saturday Morning
First Baptist Parsonage
Evan expected to find Reverend Thurston in his study at the church preparing his message for tomorrow. But when he phoned over there, the secretary told him the pastor had stayed home this morning. Evan worried his old friend was sick. He didn’t want his mentor to be the next to expire.
And, note to selfish self, I’m in no mood to take Thurston’s place in the pulpit in the morning — or maybe ever.
Seventy-two-year-old Thurston was hardly ill. Dressed in a pair of bib overalls and a tattered chambray shirt, he was down on his knees using a hand shovel to turn over the soil in the flower garden in back of the parsonage.
Since dawn, the temperature had warmed up into the forties, but the ground must have still been hard from yesterday’s freeze.
As he entered the yard, Evan called out, “I’ve got news for you, Pastor. Spring isn’t for a couple of months yet.”
“Evan!” Thurston cried happily. He stood up, wiped his mud-caked hand on his pant leg, and extended it to Evan. The hand was big and meaty, and its grip could crush a rock. Thurston wasn’t the only African-American in St. Clair County, but his social status as a religious leader made him the most distinguished. First Baptist had a few black members. United Methodist had none.

Chapter 18
Friday Night
With Evan
Now Clapper’s dead. What is life but heat? Time flows in one direction — from low to high entropy, from hot to cold. Angus with the flushed cheeks is now cold. Warm-hearted Bob is now ash.
After that ample meal at Edie’s, Evan didn’t feel much like having dinner. On the way home, he stopped in at a convenience store and bought a can of aerosol cheese and a box of Ritz crackers. There not being any Wild Turkey or Jack Daniels on the shelf, he opted for a fifth of Old Crow.
Edie hadn’t yet asked him to return Bob’s phone or computer. And he certainly wasn’t ready to tell her what he’d found. Maybe she figured he’d never found the passwords. When he got back to his trailer and settled in, his first task was to back it all up into the cloud.

GP711 Preacher Finds a Corpse - Chapter 17 (28:09 minutes)Edie forbids Evan to go further in his investigation. Evan gets news about Clapper, and a key witness is silent.
Chapter 17
Friday Afternoon
Taggart House
It was two o’clock by the time Evan got to Edie’s. The snowfall had abated, but a blustery wind had kicked up, and the dense cloud cover imparted a general gloom. As the locals say, “If you don’t like the weather in Missouri, wait five minutes and it’ll change.” But Evan remembered they’d said the same thing in Massachusetts.
When Edie didn’t respond to the doorbell, Evan let himself in. These ranch homes don’t have a mudroom, as the farmhouses do, but there was space in the entryway for him to remove his slush-caked work boots and hang up his soaked ball cap and down jacket. He tucked the bag with both computers behind a box of fire logs. He wasn’t yet sure how much he wanted to tell Edie about his data drilling. After all, she’d authorized him to make arrangements. And so far he hadn’t followed through with the details of the memorial service. But he figured it was his responsibility to at least understand the disposition of Molly’s estate. And he was hoping — or fearing — those discoveries would shed some light on why his friend felt he had to die.
Having removed his wet gear and his cap, Evan was more or less neatly dressed in a flannel shirt and khakis. But he’d be plodding around her neat house in his damp wool socks. Somehow exposing his bare, hairy feet didn’t seem appropriate. He called out to Edie, and her voice from another room shot back, “Sit yourself down and eat!”
The place at the head of the dining room table was set for one, with a steaming hot meal and a pot of fresh coffee.
