Chapter 25
Sunday Afternoon
With Lt. Briana Caspar
Evan’s not stopping to grab a sandwich before he hit the highway was powerful testimony to his sense of urgency.
The outside temperature was still in the forties with partly cloudy skies and not much of a wind. Spotting the metallic-orange Mustang with the fancy wheels was all too easy. Even though Evan hoped Briana had better things to do, he found her in her carport, bundled up against the cold, hosing the salt off the sides of her muscle car.
He stopped his Taurus in front of the Mustang. Because the carport had a rear wall, Evan’s maneuver effectively blocked Briana from making a hasty exit.
As he got out, he called to her, “Would you be Briana?”
She recognized him right away. “Why, you’re the preacher!”
“Yes,” he admitted, surprised, as he touched the bill of his ball cap. “But my day job is I work for Zed Motors.”
She didn’t panic. She shut off the hose and actually laughed. “How do you come to be doing Satan’s work on a Sunday?”
“Mr. Zed is hardly Satan, Ms. Caspar. Just a businessman who wants to keep his customers, and keep them happy.”
