Episode 78: Can A Writer Profitably Advertise A Stand-Alone Book?
In this week’s episode, I look at whether or not a writer can profitably advertise a stand-alone book with no sequels.
I also discuss GHOST IN THE LORE and the audiobook version of FROSTBORN: THE DWARVEN PRINCE.
As always, you can listen to the show on Libsyn, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Amazon Music:

Thanks for the thoughts!
Thanks for all the thoughts and kind words on my last post!
I was mostly thinking aloud, and I expect it was the sort of post that would get 2 or 3 likes and a comment or two, which is why I post it on a Saturday. (It was either this or a post about how I think Apple keeps the iPad Mini in production to sell it for use as a cash register.)
Instead, I think that was most Facebook comments I’ve ever gotten for a single post.
I suspect what I’ll probably do for my next series is see how all the plot threads tie up in DRAGONTIARNA: WARDEN and make a decision from there. Because WARDEN will have a LOT of plot threads, and while I know how it ends, I haven’t 100% decided how all the individual threads will wrap up. Any one of them could likely make the setup for another series.

What to write next?
Once the DRAGONTIARNA series has come to an end, it seems like I will have come to a sort of crossroads, and I need to decide what to write next.
After DRAGONTIARNA: WARDEN is done, I will have written 37 books with Ridmark as the main character (39 if you include FROSTBORN: THE FIRST QUEST and FROSTBORN: THE SKULL QUEST), which will be just over four million words and nine years.
After all that, I do feel like it is time to do something new. Here are some of the ideas I have been considering.
1.) A new epic fantasy series set in Andomhaim/Owyllain.
2.) A new epic fantasy series set several hundred years earlier in Andomhaim/Owyllain. I don’t want to do a prequel series, because I don’t really like prequels all that much. So if I do write a series set earlier in Andomhaim’s history, it will involve events that haven’t been mentioned in the FROSTBORN/SEVENFOLD SWORD/DRAGONTIARNA books to preserve dramatic tension. Like, if you read a book set in 1880s New York, you obviously know that New York survives to the present day…but you don’t necessarily know whether the characters will survive to the end of the book.
3.) A new epic fantasy series set in the Heptarchy.
4.) A new epic fantasy series set in a completely new setting with new rules.
5.) A new epic fantasy series in the world of Caina and the Empire.
6.) Take a break from epic fantasy for a while and start a new science fiction series. I hear Armored Space Bounty Hunters are popular!
7.) A new epic fantasy series about a mercenary company inspired by how much BATTLE BROTHERS I played in 2020 and how much MASTER OF MAGIC I have played in 2021 so far.
8.) Take a break from epic fantasy for a while and write more Cormac Rogan mystery novels.
9.) Take a break from epic fantasy for a while and focus on CLOAK MAGE. (I should note that I’m writing more CLOAK MAGE novels regardless of what I decide to do otherwise.)
10.) A new epic fantasy series in a more Dungeons & Dragons-esque setting than Andomhaim. This might cross over with some of the ideas above, especially #7.
So those are some of the ideas that I am considering.
I daresay I am richly blessed with choice. Twenty years ago, I could write whatever I wanted, but no one would publish it. Now I can write whatever I want and publish whatever I want, and I’m pretty sure at least some people will read it.
And on that topic, thanks for reading, everyone! Also, GHOST IN THE LORE is still on track for the 1st half of May.

WRAITHSHARD: PYRE & FORGE now on all platforms!
I am pleased to report that WRAITHSHARD: PYRE & FORGE is now available on all ebook platforms!
You can get it at Amazon US, Amazon UK, Amazon DE, Amazon CA, Amazon AU, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Google Play, Apple Books, and Smashwords.
If all goes well, I will bring the fifth and final WRAITHSHARD book to all platforms in the first half of May.
As it turns out, I’m going to have a lot of things come out in the first half of May – GHOST IN THE LORE, the audiobook of FROSTBORN: THE DWARVEN PRINCE, and the wide publication of WRAITHSHARD: WRATH & BATTLE. So I’m not quite sure what order things will happen, but they will happen soon!

GHOST IN THE LORE cover image!
Editing is now underway for GHOST IN THE LORE.
That means it’s time to share the cover image! As with all the books in the GHOST NIGHT series, the cover was designed by the excellent Clarissa Yeo.
If all goes well, the book should be out in the first half of May. Be sure to sign up for my new-release newsletter and you’ll get a free ebook copy of the short story GHOST MIRAGE when GHOST IN THE LORE comes out!
What will GHOST IN THE LORE be about? A quote from the book should summarize:
The journey to Iramis felt like the final stage of a gamble. Caina had taken many, many risks in her life, and she knew what it felt like when she reached the point of no return. Like when she sprinted across a roof and leaped off the edge, not entirely certain if she would reach the next building. Or when she threw a knife, knowing that if she missed, she would likely die in the next instant.
The dice had been cast, and they were tumbling across the table.
All that remained was to see how they would land.
