A Cooling salad for summer. Blog marathon post 18

 I made this today.

1. Chop cucumber into square cubes and  place in serving bowl.

2.In a separate pan heat oil, splutter some til (sesame seeds). Add peanuts and lightly roas.

3. Add this to cucumber. Toss until it coats.

4.Squeeze some lemon juice and add salt.

5. Garnish with chopped mint leaves.

A delicious, nutritious, simple and quick salad is ready to cool you for summer.

Til (sesame seeds) are anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and also have curative properties.

Peanuts are high in protein.

Mint and cucumber are really cooling.

Try it! And tell me if you liked!

Sunday stealing --OC 25 meme. Blog marathon post 17

After such an intense previous post, I thought I would do a fun one today.

So the post for today is a meme from Sunday Stealing.

Here goes:

1. What is your origin of your first name? What about any nicknames?

My first name means 'love'. Nicknames--many which are different versions of my name.

2. Have you any claims to fame?

Three  best-selling books and my pencil portraits.

3. If you were famous, how would you introduce yourself to someone who had never heard of you?

Mostly they have :P (apologies if that sounded boastful)

4. Which of your country's achievements do you hold in highest regard?

GDP growth of 9% per annum , Booming sensex, World class heath care and the Indian IT industry are the ones that come instantly to my mind.

5. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I just wanted to be happy. :) I still  want just that!

6. What was your most prized possession as a child? Do you still have it?

A very special  personalized bound book in which my closest friends have hand written stuff. Yes, I still have it.

7. What would you change about yourself, if you could?

Nothing. I am very proud of the person I am as I have truly struggled to get here.

8. What are you obsessed with?

Details and dissecting reasons for human behavior.

9. What is your greatest achievement so far, or the high point of your career?

The fact that my second book 'Life is what you make it' was among top ten books of 2011.

10. When/where were you happiest?

When I was in my Art school at Norwich UK.

11. And the lowest point in your life thus far?

Too dark, I don't even want to go there.

12. What was the best decision you ever made?

To have two children :)

13. If you have any body modifications, which was most painful, or which
do you regret the most? If you haven't got any, do you have any
planned, or would you ever consider getting any?

Are you crazy?! Of course not! I am happy with the way I am.

14. What is the most idiotic thing you have ever done while intoxicated?

Written blog-posts like this :D

15. What is your favorite joke?

Myself.  Aren't we all a big joke? We take ourselves so seriously, sometimes.

16. What is the coolest/most impressive thing you own?

A book published in the U.S.S.R (USSR doesnt even exist anymore)  which my grandfather owned which is more than a hundred years old and which is now passed on to me. I treasure this book.

17. When did you last cry, and why?

A little while ago. For things I can do nothing about.

18. What's the best piece of advice you've ever had?

"Let go" and "Let it be"

19. Similarly, what's the nicest thing anyone's ever done for you?

I am truly showered with so much love I feel very blessed for all the niceness. People whom i have never met, write to me, saying how much I inspire them. People whom I don't know, give me gifts as a token of their appreciation, during my book events. I am constantly over-whelmed.

20. Have you any vices?
I don't have any of the seven deadly vices that Dante described. I guess my biggest 'vice' would be my total honesty and how I speak my mind so darn bluntly. (I know I have hurt people with my words)

21. Do you regret anything?

Not really.

22. What is the best invention ever?

Internet of course--and then Airplanes. The world had truly shrunk!

23. How would you describe your relationship with your family?
Blessed. Totally blessed.

24. Who is your biggest inspiration?

My father.

25. What are you going to do when you've finished Sunday Stealing?

Read a book till I can no longer keep my eyes open.

On choices, nagging and unpredictability of life. Blog marathon post 16

A discussion I had with a friend sparked off an interesting thought in
my mind. She was very surprised to know that I do not object to my
spouse smoking. (He is a smoker).

"But why don't you stop him? Why do you allow him to smoke?" She asked,
genuinely surprised and stunned perhaps that there indeed exist wives in
this world who 'let' their husbands smoke!

What interested me was the choice of words--"letting" and "allowing" your spouse to do something.

It's usually children who are 'allowed' and 'not allowed' certain things.

I told my friend that my husband is an adult and smoking is a choice he
makes. He knows enough to decide what is good and not good for him.  I
do believe that one of the worst things spouses can do is nag the other
about something.

I think a good marriage is one where a spouse respects the other. One
cannot act like a protective parent in a marriage. If you act like a
protective parent, be prepared to deal with a rebellious teen.

The fact is nobody knows what will happen even in the next one hour. A
few months back my cousin's wife dropped down dead ( a massive cardiac
arrest) at the age of 36, leaving behind two kids who are seven and
five. She neither smoked nor drank.

Another close friend's first cousin went through a similar tragedy. Her
spouse who was 41 dropped down dead on his way to the bathroom. He
neither smoked nor drank and was a pure vegetarian too.

A friend's father who was a chronic smoker lived upto the age of 75. My
maternal grandfather lived upto the age of ninety two or so and he
smoked too.

Yes, I am aware of the dangers of smoking.

I am also aware that life is very unpredictable.

What matters is how you live each day.

Be grateful if you have lived today well. Say a little prayer of thanks
if you have had happy moments of togetherness with loved ones--friends
and family.

And don't try to control your spouse. If it makes them happy, let go!  Life IS short!

And  be happy  yourself too!!

Believe in yourself. Blog marathon post 14.

Very often, when we are faced with a difficult situation, we tend to turn to those we consider our closest friends for advice.

We weigh their words and very often act on them too. But I do believe
that NOBODY is really 'qualified' to tell YOU, what will work and what
will not work in YOUR situation. (I am obviously not talking about
advice  on a particular skill set required to do a specific task)

The fact is nobody, (not your parents, not your best friend, not even
your soul mate) is going to really understand what YOU, as an individual
are going through. They are always going to tell you what they presume
will work or not work, for your greater good.

But they truly aren't experiencing the exact same emotions that you are.
They may say they understand and in fact they may believe that
completely do, but truly they will never get it. Your dreams, your pain,
your hopes, your emotions are truly yours alone.

Am I saying that you should never ask for advice? NO. We have much to
learn from older folks who might have gone through a similar situation.
Age does have its advantages after all.

But I think the best way would be to follow what your inner voice tells
you. Spend some time alone. Write down what is bothering you. I have
discovered that writing in a journal is truly a great way to give
direction and expression to that inner voice of yours which often gets
drowned.

Believe in yourself. You are definitely more awesome that you think. Yes, you can do it,

All you have to do is believe.

And take that one step at a time.

Always remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with that single step. And the hour is always darkest just before dawn.

ps:I am blogging from Chennai. I am here for the launch of my third book 'Tea for two and a piece of cake' which is on the Asian Age best-seller top ten fiction list.. So if you are in Chennai tomorrow, I will be at Landmark, Citi centre from 6.30 PM onwards. Come and say a hello :)

3 songs. Blog marathon post 13

Here is a meme I created. Please feel free to use it in your blogs with a link back to this post.

In my third book, 'Tea for two and a piece of cake' all the chapter titles are songs. If we really think about it, I think there is a song for every stage in our life. There is a song for every person in our life. And there probably is a song which personifies how you feel about certain things in your life. Therefore this meme revolves around songs.

To participate what you have to do is give us three songs (be nice and post  link to the you tube video please!)  that would best  describe the following three things in your life.

1. Friends

2. Love

3.Parents

And here are my answers:

Friends:

2. Love: For me this is the ultimate love song

:

3.Parents:

Strangely this is fairly recent Hindi song which one would not usually associate with parents. I have personal memories connected with this song--and I cry each time this song plays. I do love the lyrics too.

Please do leave me a comment if you take part in this meme. Or leave me a comment even if you don't have a   blog. I love to discover new songs!

And hopefully you enjoyed my songs too.

Good night folks!

On why I love Chennai--Blog marathon post 12

Chennai is a place that evokes so much in me emotionally. I spent a few  crucial years of my growing up there.I am proud to say I finished my tenth grade from Kendirya Vidyalaya IIT Chennai and I have such treasured memories associated with the IIT campus and my school. Lush green forest all around, deers  who would visit us at lunch time (we had a 'watch duty' a student who had to 'guard' our lunches when we went out lest the deers in the campus eat it!)

It was a wonderful atmosphere to grow up in.

I used to play basketball for my school (later represented my region thrice for in the KVS  Nationals which was a huge honour) and I have fond memories of many many happy hours here.

The IIT  guys (the nerds)were always the target of the butt of jokes from us the 'cool girls'. Those days they carried their trademark cloth bag slung over one shoulder. (probably their way of making a fashion statement :D ). We once challenged them to a basketball match . (The IIT Chennai guys team versus the girls team of KVIIT) and they lost. Heh heh. Yeah, we (the girls team) were really good. One of the best in the country--we hold the record for winning the Gold in the Nationals thrice. Of , there is no way the IIT guys would have beaten our school guys team.(Our school guys team was really excellent)

We had a sports hostel attached to KVIIT and the guys in the sports hostel were awesome when it came to Basketball as well as Volley-ball and Athletics as they mostly earned their place there on sports scholarships. They were a talented lot.

The reason for me to travel down the memory lane is that I will be visiting Chennai soon for the launch of my third book! Many of my classmates as well as school mates will be there and I so look forward to meeting them all!

If you happen to be in Chennai on 6th, do come and say a hello! I would love to meet you too.

Here is the invite.

I am so looking forward to this trip.

Will keep you updated on what unfolds.

Watch this space!

A gift much cherished. Blog marathon post 11.

There are gifts and then there are thoughtful gifts.

Ramesh of Business Musings had written a brilliant post about it and mentioned a priceless gift that he had received that left him all misty-eyed and had him going triple wow. (His post is lovely-do read it)

Something similar happened to me.

I have never been gifted anything like this before.

It was gifted to me by one of my closest friends who lives in the UK. I do feel very very fortunate to have this friend in my life and we exchange emails on a daily basis :) Sometimes more than two :)

Since I do not want to give out the name of my friend (some things are best left a mystery eh? ;-)) I am blacking out the name from the photo.

I couldn't stop exclaiming in joy and utter surprise when I opened the gift.

It was a personalized vintage Moet and Chandon!!!

This is what the glittering gold embossed letters say on the box:

And when you open it, this is what it says :

Of course I am a very happy woman :) And I haven't even opened the champagne bottle. Heh heh.

I want to wait to open this one and have this with my friend, when we next meet.

Along with it there was also this jar of wild hibiscus flowers in syrup which you place at the bottom of the champagne glass and they open up! And they are completely edible too. How much more exotic can it get?!

This is one gift that occupies a place of pride on the book-shelf opposite my bed.

"May no gift be too small to give, nor too simple to receive, which is wrapped in thoughtfulness, and tied with love." said L.O. Baird

To me, that is what the above gift personifies.

Love and thoughtfulness from a dear dear friend .

If you have it, you are indeed wealthy.

Reflect. Blog marathon post 10

The prompt given for this Sunday at Sunday Scribblings is ' Reflect'. Here is my entry for it, which also serves as post for the day.

Reflect

sad Pictures, Images and Photos

As I watch you stand on the balcony,

Looking out, pondering  over unsaid thoughts,

I reflect.

As I watch you have that cup of tea,

Saying a hundred things without speaking a word,

I reflect.

As I hear you lashing out in anger,

A hundred accusations flying wildly,

I reflect.

As I analyse the path I have chosen

And my conviction of sticking to it, even when lost,

I reflect.

But mostly I  think about all that has gone wrong

And all that could have been

I reflect.

And I weep.

For a love that died

But tears  continuing to flow are lost in  all the reflections.

Yoga for life . Blog marathon post 9.

Recently, when I went to  the Delhi International airport, the mesmerizing sculpture (figures sculpted by Nikhil Bhandari)  of the twelve poses in 'Surya namaskar', caught my eye. I stood and stared at it for some time.  It was brilliant!

Yoga and I go back a long way. It was a subject taught in my school and I am now grateful for this treasure of a foundation, laid in my early years. I was in Class seven when I was first chosen to be a part of the team for 'Yoga demonstrations' at various locations and associations, which my 'Yoga sir' was associated with.  I was probably chosen as I was pencil thin as a kid, with an extremely flexible body and could master the poses quite perfectly in no time.

Today 28 years later, my love affair with Yoga still continues. I swear by yoga. It is truly the best gift you can give your body. I am proud that I can still do all the asanas (the yoga poses) which I could do when I was 12! That is the magic of yoga. It is better than any anti-aging cream. It is also better than any magic pill that promises to make you slim or cure all your illnesses.

The thing is it is very important to find a good, qualified instructor first. I see all kinds of exorbitant amounts charged in the name of  various fancy tags attached with the word 'yoga'. Let me tell you, just practising simple yoga will give you the same benefits, provided you do it right. There are a few yoga institutes in India where accommodation is very basic and the ashrams follow certain patterns and rules. There is no 'luxury' and meals are simple sattvic food. If you are keen to do a proper course in yoga, I would highly recommend learning in one of these institutes. (Svyasa in Bangalore, Kaivalyadham near Pune and Swami sivananda's yoga ashram in Kerala are some of the names that come immediately to the mind). In the last one, you can even take a 'yoga vacation' to get a feel of it.

Many people ask me what poses I do when I practise my yoga. I do the surya namaskars (at least a minimum of ten), Paschimottrasana, Halasan, Sarvangasa, Chakrasana, Sethu bandasan, Ushtrasana, Bhujangasana to name a few.(Please forgive the spelling. I am typing from memory)

But the thing is, what works for me might be different from what your body needs. An excellent book I would recommend is Payal Tiwari's 'From XL to XS' which gives you a good idea on what it is all about. I read today that one round of surya-namskar can give same effects as a 30 minute cardio.

I do not know how much the above statement has been verified, but I do know that they burn calories a lot.

"Embrace and love your body. It is the most amazing thing you will ever own." said a quote I found on the net.

I can't agree more!
