The New Climate Report is a Call for Climate Justice

On Monday, August 9, 2021, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a major new climate report titled AR6 Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis.
This report addresses the most up-to-date physical understanding of the climate system and climate change, bringing together the latest advances in climate science, and combining multiple lines of evidence from paleoclimate, observations, process understanding, and global and regional climate simulations.
What does this report say? And what does it mean for the movement for climate justice?

Diverse SFFH Review Copy Group Promo

Do you like reading? Would you be willing to write a few sentences about a book you enjoyed? You may be eligible to receive free review copies of books from indie authors!
Traditional publishers only give out review copies to professional reviewers. Some indie publishers and self-published authors have a broader definition of who qualifies as a reviewer. If you love reading and are willing to post reviews online, you may qualify for a free ebook review copy.
If you're interested, check out the Diverse SFFH Review Copy Group Promo. My novel, Change, is featured in this group promo. You can read a short sample of any book in the list before deciding if you want to review it. Since you're doing this for fun, the sample is a nice way to make sure it's a book you'll actually enjoy. StoryOrigin makes the whole process simple for both authors and readers.
Let me know what you think! Even if you don't pick my book, I'm curious to know how the process goes for you as a reviewer. I hope you find one or more books that you enjoy!

Summer Cli-Fi Sale

Between the summer heat and the rising COVID-19 rates across the United States, I've been eager to spend more time indoors lately.
Reading and writing are two of my favorite ways to pass the time indoors. I'll have more news about my writing in the next issue of this newsletter. In the meantime, I want to tell you about two great opportunities for summer reading.
The first reading opportunity is my Summer Cli-Fi Sale! All of my ebooks are currently half price. They're $1.99 in the US and about half price everywhere. The sale ends this weekend, and I rarely put them all on sale at the same time, so don't miss it. Be sure to tell your friends too!
The second reading opportunity is the Diverse SFFH Review Group Promo! Numerous authors are offering free review copies of their pro-queer, disability-positive, multicultural, and neurodiverse books and stories.
Let me know if you liked hearing about these two great summer reading opportunities! If you have any suggestions for future editions of the newsletter, let me know that too. I love hearing from my readers!

The Solar Tax Credit Fails To Help Lower-Income Families

I was actually looking forward to doing my taxes this year.
As a homeowner who installed a solar energy system in 2020, my household is eligible for a big federal tax credit. The Solar Investment Tax Credit (Solar ITC) is a federal solar tax credit that currently offers a 26% credit for the cost of solar systems built on residential and commercial properties. For a residential solar system like ours, the Solar ITC translates into thousands of dollars worth of federal tax credit.
That’s the good news.
The bad news? The Solar ITC is nonrefundable. In other words, it only reduces our tax liability, which doesn’t necessarily translate into a bigger refund. Due to our current household income level, we don’t have much tax liability. Therefore, we can only claim a small fraction of our Solar ITC this year.
Thankfully, the unclaimed portion of the credit does roll over to future years. But if our household income doesn’t increase significantly in the next few years, it may take us a decade or more to claim the full balance of the credit (if it even exists for that long).

What Are Real-Life Superheroes?

For the past 11 years or so, I've been involved in something called the Real-Life Superhero movement.
So far, I haven't published much nonfiction about Real-Life Superheroes (RLSH). My main focus as an author has been fiction and poetry. My main focus as an RLSH has been doing the work, not talking about the ins and outs of being an RLSH. As a result, I’ve hardly written anything about the RLSH movement and my experiences in it.
It’s time to change that.
This is the first in a series of essays about the Real-Life Superhero movement and my involvement in it. This particular essay is geared toward a broad audience that includes both RLSH and non-RLSH readers. Future essays may speak primarily to an RLSH or non-RLSH audience. All of these essays will in some way explore what RLSH are, what pitfalls we should avoid, and what we can aspire to do for our communities and the world.
I hope that these essays spark productive discussion about the ups and downs of the RLSH movement. They may even inspire positive changes in the RLSH movement and communities served by RLSH. If you have any suggestions along those lines, feel free to contact me.Read more ›

My Books Are Now On Bookshop!

Bookshop is an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores. If you want to find a specific local bookstore to support, find them on the Bookshop map and they’ll receive the full profit from your order. Otherwise, you can start at my online bookshop. Either way, your order will contribute to an earnings pool that will be evenly distributed among independent bookstores (even those that don’t use Bookshop).Read more ›

Creative Climate Newsletter

Creative Climate will be a weekly newsletter about climate fiction and other works of climate creativity.
The free version will include a weekly round-up of stories related to creative projects with climate themes: novels, short stories, films, music, art, and so on. It might also include some creative nonfiction and stories about creative solutions to the climate crisis.
The paid version will include new climate-themed short fiction and poetry. This will initially involve a new short story and poem from me each month. If get enough subscribers, I'll expand this to include guest contributors.
I'll be launching the newsletter in January of 2021. In the meantime, I want your input!
What do you think of this newsletter idea? Would you be interested in subscribing to the free or paid version? Would you like to see an emphasis on climate fiction, other types of climate creativity, creative climate solutions, or something else entirely?
If you're interested in the newsletter, let me know what type of content you'd like to see there.Read more ›
