The Box, the Books and the Reviews

A large box arrived outside our door yesterday. It was raining (pouring) but luckily I heard the bell, so the contents didn't get wet... the precious contents... the book... the Writers' Mill Journal!

Writers' Mill is our local writing group here. We meet monthly at the library and we decided last spring to produce our second ever journal, only four years after the first! Last month a team of us were frantically editing, formatting, fixing, designing and drawing, and now, at last, the journal...

Why do we write?

I'm delighted to welcome Jeffrey Blount to my blog today. He's the author of a young adult novel with the sort of haunting cover that tempts you to pick it up, even when you know you've got read-and-review commitments to last through to next year. Hating Heidi Foster tells of a friendship torn apart by tragedy. Suffering grief and loss have deprived Mae of her closest ally right when she needs her most, and now Mae seems to be losing herself. I'm eager to read and will post a review soon I ho...

Concept to story to series: Meet Georgia L. Jones

On of the best thing about blogging is the chance to take part in book tours. Today I'm honored to host Georgia L Jones, author of the Remnants of Life series. If you click on the picture above you can find some more stops on her tour, but I hope you'll wait until you've read this post and met the author here.
I've always wondered how authors approach writing a series, and Georgia answers this and many other questions below. But first, a little information about the book:

Time Flies

Time flies... and those flies keep chasing me. Meanwhile my list of books to review keeps running ahead of me and I'm trying to catch up. So here's my next crop of reviews with coffee recommendations because coffee is good (and flies aren't).

First is Suzanne McNear's Knock Knock A Life. A wonderful fictional memoir of a woman growing up in the midWest, moving to New York and LA, and struggling to find herself underneath the expectations of a changing world. Fragile, bending, almost broken dur...

How to Create a Writers' Group Journal

Our local writers' group decided sometime in Spring that it might be time to produce another journal. It's only three, maybe four years since the last one, and we'd like to make it an annual event. So we worked out a schedule, we called for submissions, and...

Anyway, we really are going to produce it, and it's going to be printed in time for Christmas. We're feeling very proud of ourselves, though I'll feel more confidently proud when we actually have the printed copies to hand around. Meanwh...

In this battleground of angels, Evil won.

Have you ever wondered why bad things happen to good people? Or why the world seems to go from bad to worse? H. David Blalock offers an interesting and exciting answer in his Angelkiller Triad--a series of three books set in a world where earth is the battleground and Evil won. I reviewed the first book, Angelkiller, last week at http://books.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474981757119, but now I've finished reading Traitor Angel too, and I'm eagerly awaiting book three.

Want to read a scary story?

Want to read a scary story?

Want to visit a haunted house?

Want to need the lamps well-lit at night?

In that case, read Spook House by Michael West, another haunting tale of Harmony Indiana from Seventh Star Press. See the bottom of this post to find out more about both book and author, but first, here's my review of a smooth dark novel best enjoyed with a bold dark 5-star cup of coffee.
