107 Charing Cross Road

One day, in England, my husband, wise and kind gentleman that he is, suggested we take the train to London and walk along Charing Cross Road. We climbed out from the underground and found a small bookstore. It was a very nice bookstore, filled with mysteries, many at crazy-low prices, so I treated myself with presents to carry back for my birthday, and we walked on. A few steps later we came to...another bookstore. This one was filled with second hand books, cool volumes of photos and essays,...

Why Write? And why write for YA?

I've got a really cool YA book on my reading list at the moment, and the author, Ali B., has kindly agreed to visit my blog as well. Since we both love to write, she offered to write about what drives her writing. Over to you Ali, and thank you so much for visiting here.

Oh, and readers, please just click on the picture to find the Sixteen on Amazon:

How Not To Write A Novel

One of the books I read on vacation was titled How Not To Write A Novel. I'm glad to say I've avoided many of the errors it depicts. But there was certainly a lot of food for thought, and some great, enjoyably exaggerated examples of what not to do. If you want to write a novel, and enjoy a good laugh at your own expense, this is the book for you. So I'll send off my edits for Tails of Mystery, prepare the ground for Peter's Promise, write some more of Subtraction, and do my best to follow/no...

Defrosting the Freezer's Such Fun

We had a wonderful trip to England, saw the sea, saw relatives, enjoyed good food, good fellowship, and good conversations. And then we returned. Sadly, in our absence, our freezer was contentedly enjoying good fresh air. A jug of milk that I'd frozen for use on our return had decided to grow, and in growing had pushed open the door. As a result, the freezer's contents turned into floor to ceiling ice.

I considered using an ice pick to chip out the occasional dinner. But we live in Oregon. It...

I love the touch of paper in the morning

I never really liked newspapers. In the old days I didn't like the way the print came off on my fingers (and on the sandwich if I were foolish enough to read while eating). But even when the inks improved, I still didn't like the feel of endless sheets all crackling and strange as they entangled me. Then they shrank the pages but everything still felt too big, too scattered, too eager to distract me, especially with color, and get away. So I'd rather read books.

Then papers became electronic....

Hi Sheila. Characters are so important to my novel, Entertaining Angels, and I want to have a sit down with Zach Taylor. He’s new to town, but he has his eyes set on my little Mads. And, her life will change forever!
