Rick Parry: FA have hindered England, they need to copy Germany
Evening Standard
The two moments highlighting English football's problems could not have been better scripted. On Tuesday at London Colney, as England prepare to meet Wales on Saturday, Fabio Capello restores John Terry as captain, reminding us of the country's difficulties on the field.
And at the same time, in the Thatcher Room of Portcullis House, the Football Association's former chief executive, Ian Watmore, is explaining the game's problems in the Football Association's boardroom.
He has told the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee that people with too many vested interests in the professional game are running the FA and that they need a complete overhaul.

Blatter and Bin Hammam chances rest on who can claim credit for the Goal Project
Insideworldfootball.biz
The FIFA Presidential election will turn on two words: Goal Project.
This was Sepp Blatter's great idea, energetically pushed by him ever since he got elected as President. But, and this is crucial, it was run by Mohammed Bin Hammam. The Qatari can win if, through his stewardship of the project, he has built such support in FIFA that he can undercut Blatter, particularly in the small organisations round. It is a big if.
Yes, the election will see much talk of transparency and reforming FIFA. We have had such talk before and Bin Hammam is already engaged on such campaign themes.

In conversation with Gorkana
On Friday I had a breakfast briefing at Deloittes for Gorkana. In conversation with Michael Davies from Gorkana, the topic centred around sport and the media, and how the biggest challenge facing brands right now is how to exploit the Olympics in 2012.
You can read a write up of the briefing here. (you do not meed a membership to read the article)

Nicky Henderson: Horse racing can be hell at times
Evening Standard
Forget the Cheltenham Festival being about the Irish, their horses and their wonderful punters.
The racing world is convinced that this year's meeting is really a fight between two contrasting Englishmen.
In the blue corner is old Etonian Nicky Henderson - one race at the annual gathering is named after his father, Johnny Henderson.

Exclusive: Leyton Orient instruct lawyers to ask for judicial review over West Ham Olympic Stadium move
Insideworldfootball.biz
Leyton Orient will move to the courts next week asking for a judicial review of the Government's decision to house West Ham United in the Olympic stadium after the 2012 Games.
Orient chairman Barry Hearn's decision to go to the law could, if successful, mean months of more discussion on an issue the Government thought it had finally settled last month.
Hearn, talking exclusively to me in Qatar, where he was attending an International Sports Security Conference said: "Our lawyers,Mischon de Reya have been instructed to proceed with all haste to a full application of a judicial review.
"We will make a written application next week.

Athletics will never escape the shame of Ben Johnson
Evening Standard
Michael Johnson admits that athletics, indeed sport, has lost the innocence it had when he was a young boy in Dallas dreaming of just running fast.
"The great thing about sports is the debates you have," says the 43-year-old. "Twenty years ago the debate between two guys in the bar would be who is the better athlete? Now it is which guy is on drugs? And whether that performance they saw is real or not? It has opened up a whole new debate about sport."
I am talking to Johnson during a break at a conference on international sports security in Doha, Qatar where the subject of drug cheats is debated.
The four-time Olympic champion is one of the speakers and tells me he knows the moment when drugs changed sport forever.

Have we maligned FIFA or, for that matter, the IOC?

Given how these organisations see themselves as accountable to nobody but themselves, and this in an era when the cry of democracy and transparency cannot even be resisted by Arab despots, this may seem a ridiculous question.
Yet I am inclined to raise it because of how different the Cricket World Cup in India is turning out compared to the Football World Cup in South Africa.
I have been struck by this comparison in the past week as I have travelled in India following the 50-over cricket tournament.
