Pain of brother's loss won't stop Rob Purdham preaching rugby league gospel
Evening Standard
Nearly a year after Garry Purdham was among 12 people killed during a shooting spree in Cumbria, his brother still cannot believe it happened.
"I think of him all the time," Rob Purdham tells me. "I know I need to get on but it still seems surreal. Even now, it does not feel it has happened. It has not sunk in."
We are in Piccadilly. The captain of Harlequins rugby league team is just about to become the first man in the sport to complete 10 years playing the game in the capital and is busy organising his testimonial. But, with the noise of central London traffic increasing, his voice drops as he recalls the afternoon he heard the shattering news about a brother who, at 31, was just one year older than him.

Jonathan Trott: I've only just started to make my mark
Evening Standard
Rightly or wrongly Jonathan Trott has the reputation as an aggressive, cocky batsman who, in the manner of Kevin Pietersen, deserted his native South Africa for England.
His Test average of 61.53 is second only to Don Bradman's 99.94, he is cemented in at No3 for England after being part of their Ashes-winning team and regularly winds up the opposition.
But Trott, who is sitting in front of me in Edgbaston's cricket centre, is determined to correct any false impressions. "It's a bit unfair to think of stats like my average," he argues. "It's a good start but I've only played a handful of games.

Steve Davis: If Ronnie O'Sullivan was a greyhound, you'd put him down
Evening Standard
Steve Davis is always pinching himself as he thinks how lucky he is. He only wishes Ronnie O'Sullivan would do the same. "To think that I ended up having an incredible, lovely, life through putting balls in a hole with a stick is just unthinkable," reflects the man who has won more titles in snooker than anyone else, including six World Championships.
We are in the Brentwood office of Barry Hearn, the man who once managed Davis and is now running the game. Davis is speaking to me before heading to the World Championships, where he will be commentating having failed to qualify for either the Crucible or the UK Championships for the first time since 1978.

Neil Warnock is promised a Premier League war chest
Evening Standard
Lakshmi Mittal has promised fresh investment in Queens Park Rangers should they win promotion back to the Premier League.
Britain's richest man, whose wealth is estimated at £24billion, was not at Loftus Road for last night's 0-0 draw with Derby. The result means Neil Warnock's team need to win at Cardiff on Saturday to guarantee a return to the top flight for the first time since 1996.
In a rare interview, Mittal said he was sure the west London club were now ready for a return to the big time.

Kroenke deal as much about keeping David Dein away from Arsenal
Insideworldfootball.biz
Soap operas dressed up as morality tales do not come any better than the American Stan Kroenke's take-over of Arsenal. The official word from Arsenal made the latest arrival of a foreign owner sound like the welcome a 19th century father might have given a man seeking the hand of his daughter.
This is what Peter Hill-Wood, the long serving chairman of the club, said: "The board of directors and I consider it a key responsbility to protect the ethos and spirit of the club. Mr Kroenke, although relatively new to Arsenal, has shown himself to be a man who values and respects the history and tradition of this very special club that we cherish. We are confident that he will be a safe custodian of its future."

With London 2012 now less than 500 days away, there is a window of opportunity for brands across the UK to benefit from the nation's biggest sporting event. The inevitable increased sports interest amongst media and consumers alike will see a swell of sports personalities within marketing and PR campaigns. The question is – what are the real advantages of partnering with personalities as ambassadors and how can brands assess and mitigate the risks of association?
On Thursday 14th April, Edelman Sport brought together a panel of experts to discuss the role of sports marketing and the benefits that sports personalities can bring to brands.
