Why a Real nightmare won't stop Michael Dawson dreaming

Evening Standard

Michael Dawson should have little reason to smile after last week's humbling in the Bernabeu.

Even their most fervent supporter cannot believe they will score five against Real Madrid tomorrow night and they face a fight with Manchester City to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Yet the Spurs captain fairly bounds into the Oak Room at White Hart Lane with a smile that is more than a reaction to the unexpected spring sunshine. Everybody at the club will tell you that Michael Dawson always radiates good cheer.

Hugh Robertson: Why I've changed tactics to help football put its house in order

Evening Standard

When I spoke to Hugh Robertson exactly 12 months ago he promised that, if the Tories won the election, football would have only a few months to put its house in order.

"If, by the end of the summer, the Football Association, the Premier League and the Football League have not come up with a proper plan to address [the game's main] issues, then the Government will have to step in. One of the options would be an independent regulator to run the game," he told Standard Sport.

Since then, if anything, he admits, things have got worse.

English football faces moment of truth this autumn

Insideworldfootball.biz

This autumn could see English football face its moment of truth

That moment being when the Government appoints a regulator to run the national game. Remember, this is a Tory-led collation wedded to free enterprise and firmly believing that sports bodies should run their own sports and the Government should be a facilitator not a regulator.

Now, talk of a regulator running the game is not new. Almost exactly a year ago, Hugh Robertson, then Shadow Sports Minister, told me "the national game needs to deal with four issues. The fit and proper person test for club owners, transparency so that people looking at football clubs can see exactly what's going on, the whole question of debt as a percentage of turnover, and governance. There are far too few people that sit on football boards, either in clubs or the organisations, that act independently. Most are part of the game's vested interests."

Cricket diplomacy for India and Pakistan

Cricket and politics stir passions in India and Pakistan, so the progression of both countries' national teams to the sport's World Cup is bringing the nuclear powers together for more than just a cricket match. The World host, Lisa Mullins, talks to a former BBC sports editor Mihir Bose about this so-called cricket diplomacy.

My return feels like a dream but I can't sleep now, says Pippa Funnell

Evening Standard

Great eventers, unlike great generals, do not fade away. They look for new horses to bring back the glory, and Pippa Funnell is convinced she has found the horse that can lead her to Olympic gold.

It is eight years since Funnell achieved what no one else in eventing has and claimed the Rolex Grand Slam, winning at Kentucky, Badminton and Burghley in the same year.

But, in the last five years, she appeared to have lost the appetite for top-class competition, missing the Beijing Olympics and turning to writing horsey books for children.

Now here we are, at her stables near Dorking, discussing the 43-year-old's planned return to Badminton next month for the first time in four years. As she strokes her horse, Redesigned, she whispers: "Come on Red, we are going to the Olympics."

Debate: Cross border classic

Times Now

The Pakistan cricket team landed in Chandigarh on Friday (March 25) where they will have camp ahead of Wednesday's clash with hosts India. The Pakistani team landed in Chandigarh amidst tight security and were escorted to their team hotel. The India-Pakistan clash is certainly the biggest clash of the World Cup, with fans from both sides expecting nothing less than a win. Shahid Afridi and company appeared relaxed and even the Pakistani High Commissioner to India said that security was not an issue and appealed to the Indian government to issue more visas. TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami discusses the issue with Mihir Bose, Former Sports Editor of the BBC and Author,
