Liverpool 2-0 Everton: Premier League – as it happened
Mo Salah’s penalty and late second goal earned victory, while Ibrahima Konaté was lucky to escape a red card
2 min: Calvert-Lewin did exceptionally well to rise above Van Dijk there. Either side of Alisson and Liverpool would be behind in a Premier League match yet again.
36 sec: Mac Allister has been giving the ball away quite a lot recently, and he immediately does so again here. McNeil crosses from the left and Calvert-Lewin heads straight at Alisson. Nearly a dream start for the visitors!

England 3-1 Italy: Euro 2024 qualifier – as it happened
Harry Kane scored twice as England beat Italy on home soil for the first time since 1977 to book their place at Euro 2024
Just before kick-off, a moment of silence in memory of “all the members of the European football family killed in recent days from Uefa member nations Israel and Sweden”. Not perfectly observed, though it was by the vast majority of those in Wembley.
The teams are out! The hosts in white, the visitors in blue. Just enough time to sing the joint national anthem of England and Italy, and then we’ll be off.

England 1-0 Australia: men’s international friendly – as it happened
Australia had their chances, but Ollie Watkins took his, settling an old rivalry in England’s favour
1 min: Watkins is fine to continue. It’s raining a lot.
Stéphanie Frappart of France becomes the first woman to blow the whistle for kick-off at a men’s international at Wembley. England lump the ball forward, and Watkins comes off second best in an aerial duel with Burgess. Ouch, he felt that smack on the lug.

Spain v Scotland: Euro 2024 qualifier– live
Scott McTominay had a goal controversially chalked off by VAR before Álvaro Morata inspired the hosts to victory
6 min: Porteous, Dykes and Hickey combine down the right to win a throw deep in Spanish territory. Dykes flings it in long. Spain half clear, but Hickey rolls a pass down the right for Dykes, who crosses low and hard. McTominay sticks out a leg in the hope of flicking home, but catches Laporte instead. Free kick, and a reminder that Scotland, who had been on the ropes from the get-go, have the ability to ask a few questions as well.
4 min: Spain already have that look about them. You know, that look. Scotland can barely get a sniff. Balde strides down the left and wins a corner off Porteous. Before it can be taken, Laporte goes barging into Porteous in the uncompromising style. The referee has a word. One corner leads to a second, and that one’s nearly converted at the far stick by Morata, who dives but heads wide right.

Luton 0-1 Tottenham: Premier League – as it happened
Micky van de Ven’s first goal for his new club sent ten-man Tottenham to the top of the Premier League
2 min: Richarlison scampers down the left but can’t find Son in the middle. Richarlison then cops some pantomime abuse as a former star of Watford.
25 sec: Brown leaves a calling card on Maddison. Welcome to The Kenny!

Liverpool 2-0 Union Saint-Gilloise: Europa League – as it happened
Ryan Gravenberch scored his first goal for his new club as Liverpool squeaked past Union at Anfield
3 min: … so having mentioned Liverpool’s early tempo, they calm it down and stroke it around the back patiently.
1 min: It’s not long before Liverpool start pressing. The presence of Elliott and Nunez nearly catches Machida cold, but the midfielder, a team-mate of Endo in the Japan national side, sorts himself out just in time to clear.

Newcastle 4-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Champions League – as it happened
Kylian Mbappé was out of sorts, but Newcastle certainly weren’t, as they blew the French champions away amid a party atmosphere at St James’
1 min: Just 40 seconds in, and Newcastle’s press has already forced the visitors into shipping possession on three occasions. A hectic start, in other words.
PSG get the ball rolling. Over to the players, then!

Ryder Cup 2023: Europe 16½-11½ USA – as it happened
Europe came through a fraught Singles Sunday to regain the Ryder Cup
The US team aren’t wearing their caps on the 1st tee today, in a performative show of solidarity with the under-fire and perma-hatless Patrick Cantlay. The man himself returns the favour by firing his approach at 1 to five feet. Patty Ice – a play on Matty Ice, the nickname of former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, and a reference to his unflappable demeanour – betrays his monicker by pulling the birdie putt nervously. Anything to do with his nemesis Rory McIlroy’s name being announced back on the tee, and the accompanying roar reaching the green as he made his backstroke? The plot thickens!

Ryder Cup 2023: Europe 10½-5½ USA - day two, as it happened
The USA fought back in the afternoon fourballs to keep their hopes of a comeback for the ages alive
Jordan Spieth is a three-time major winner, but he’s struggling right now. From the centre of the 3rd fairway, he pulls his approach down a bank back-left of the green. Good luck from there. Tommy Fleetwood keeps up the pressure by sticking his second pin high. A very similar unforced mistake by Scottie Scheffler on 2, as well; Viktor Hovland lets him off the hook a bit by finding the thick greenside rough himself.
The third match begins like the other two: Team USA sending their opening tee shot into the deep rough down the right, Europe finding the short stuff. The visitors could do with hitting some fairways here, because the rough at Marco Simone is punitive to say the least.
