PSV 5-1 Rangers, Doncaster 1-2 Everton: Carabao Cup and Champions League – as it happened

Rangers were cashiered into the Europa League, while Everton debutant Beto dug his new team-mates out of a hole in the Carabao Cup

GOAL! Harrogate 0-2 Blackburn (Gallagher 13). Sam Gallagher, from pretty much exactly the same spot in the Harrogate box, opens his body and calmly slots into the bottom-right corner. Harrogate up against it already.

GOAL! Harrogate 0-1 Blackburn (Garrett 10). A bit of space for Jake Garrett down the inside-left channel, just inside the box. He swivels and fires a low drive across the keeper and into the bottom right.

Fulham beat Tottenham, Salford stun Leeds: Carabao Cup second round – as it happened

Fulham gave Ange Postecoglou his first setback as Spurs boss, Salford shocked Leeds, and Crystal Palace completed a spectacular comeback on a night of League Cup drama

GOAL! Birmingham 0-1 Cardiff (Colwill 3). Rubin Colwill steers a low left-wing cross into the bottom right. Cute goal and a fast start for the Bluebirds.

GOAL! Plymouth 1-0 Crystal Palace (Waine 6). Ben Waine sweeps home from close range to give Roy Hodgson something to think about.

Arsenal 2-2 Fulham, Manchester United 3-2 Nottingham Forest: clockwatch – as it happened

It was an entertaining afternoon in the Premier League with Manchester United performing a dramatic comeback and Fulham denying Arsenal at the Emirates

FULL TIME: Bournemouth 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs, their players and their fans, are falling for Ange Postecoglou hard. Rob Smyth describes the scenes as the whirlwind romance sweeps along the south coast.

FULL TIME: Ross County 0-2 Rangers. First-half goals from Kemar Roofe and James Tavernier get the job done for Michael Beale’s side in Dingwall. The result puts the Light Blues top of the Scottish Premiership, for a couple of hours at least. Celtic, Motherwell and Kilmarnock all have the chance of leapfrogging them later: Celtic host St Johnstone while Motherwell welcome Killie to Fir Park.

Chelsea 3-0 Luton: Premier League – as it happened

Raheem Sterling scored a sensational solo goal to set Chelsea on their way to their first Stamford Bridge victory in ten

8 secs: Chelsea go super-direct and look for Sterling on the edge of the Luton box. The ball breaks to Jackson, whose shot is blocked and ends up dribbling through to Kaminski.

Chelsea get the ball rolling. They’re kicking towards the Shed End in this first half.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal: Premier League – as it happened

Martin Ødegaard’s penalty settled it for ten-man Arsenal, as Takehiro Tomiyasu picked up two cheap bookings

Arsenal get the ball rolling … but only before Selhurst Park pays a tribute to former Palace boss Trevor Francis. A minute’s worth of the warmest applause. Here we go, then.

Here come the teams! Crystal Palace wear red and blue halves, while Arsenal sport a vague callback to the early-90s, a swirly yellow-and-black effort that’s less banana, more banoffee pie. Selhurst Park is jumping, as it usually does, its denizens Glad All Over. Kick-off soon!

Manchester City 1-0 Newcastle: Premier League – as it happened

Phil Foden ran the midfield as the champions had too much for battling Newcastle

1 min: Schar goes up for a high ball with Haaland, and falls awkwardly. This doesn’t look great. He holds his right shoulder and appears to be in some distress.

There’s a match to be played, and City get the game underway. A couple of minutes late, but winning a Treble’s got to give you a bit of slack.

Football Daily | Liverpool’s transfer business, and a man chasing his own hat in the wind

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!

Liverpool have been conspicuously struggling to fill the big gap in their squad left by the summer departures of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keïta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Given not a single one of those players achieved anything positive last season – with the exception of some impressive bleep-test results in Milner’s case – you’d think this wouldn’t be too onerous a task. Anyone under 36 with two still-functioning legs and a work permit would be an instant upgrade. And yet the famous old bird has spent the last week flapping around with all the courtly grace of a man chasing his own hat in the wind, a golfer in hot pursuit of a trolley bound for that pond, a player hobbling off injured while warming up for their Werder Bremen debut. Whoops! There goes that dignity! It’s not been an edifying sight.

Football Daily | Will Harry Maguire ever emerge from the dusty dugout he calls home?

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!

The curtain has risen on a brand-new season of the Premier League, yet already it’s apparent that many things are going to pan out in exactly the same manner as before. Chelsea continue to fling their dollars around like sailors on shore leave. Liverpool are still incapable of properly replacing Graeme Souness. And yet again, for what seems like the 1,000th Old Trafford evening in a row, Harry Maguire sits brooding in the stands with a slab on. Whatever must the po’ erstwhile Manchester United captain be thinking?! Once considered part of a proud lineage that includes Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson and Roy Keane, he’s now worryingly close to the top of a list featuring David May, Marcos Rojo and William Prunier. Oh Harry! That it’s come to this! Still!

Lilia Vu wins the 2023 Women’s Open golf – as it happened

Lilia Vu shoots 67 to win her second major of yearCharley Hull finishes runner-up after disappointing 73Official leaderboard

Charley Hull’s second into the long par-four 2nd comes up just short of the green. No such problem for Lilia Vu, who absolutely creams another hybrid straight at the pin, leaving an eight-foot look at birdie. A big matchplay-style back-and-forth coming up!

Ah, in fact Kim’s drive at 2 had come to rest on the edge of that aforementioned bunker. She was only able to advance her second a few yards up the hole. So that was her third. Kim therefore does extremely well to limit the damage to bogey by lobbing a chip from the bottom of a swale to a couple of feet. She tidies up for bogey and slips back to -7. That showed real moxie, all told.

Everton 0-1 Fulham, Brighton 4-1 Luton, and more: clockwatch – as it happened

Luton were thrashed on their long-awaited return to the top flight, while Everton fluffed their lines at Goodison

GOAL! Coventry City 3-0 Middlesbrough (Lenihan og 90+1). Matt Godden whips a cross in from the right. The ball takes a huge deflection off Boro defender Darragh Lenihan and flies into the net. Game over.

Brighton v Luton. James Milner, Mahmoud Dahoud and Joao Pedro make their Brighton debuts. There’s no Moises Caicedo, currently in a holding pattern over London, unsure whether he’ll be landing at Chelsea or diverted north to Liverpool. Luton’s first top-flight starting XI since 1992 features their captain Tom Lockyer, who less than three months ago collapsed during the Championship play-off final victory over Coventry due to a heart issue.
