West Ham 0-0 Brighton: Premier League – as it happened

A poor match in which Brighton were the better side but lacked sharpness up front

Brighton get the ball rolling. A fine early-evening-pints atmosphere at the London Stadium.

The teams are out! West Ham are in their famous claret and blue, Brighton wear their first-choice blue and white stripes. Pretty bubbles in the air. We’ll be off in a couple of minutes.

West Ham 2-0 Manchester United: Premier League – as it happened

Second-half strikes by Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus inflicted a 13th defeat of the season on the visitors

3 min: Otherwise, it’s a fairly scrappy start. Both teams take turns to get an early feel of the ball.

1 min: An assured first few touches for Kambwala, who sashays down the right wing in smooth Beckenbauerian fashion. That’ll settle the 19-year-old debutant.

Welcome to the second Football Daily Christmas Awards. This is the bit where, in our old guise, we would bang on about becoming so jaded that we’d lost count of how many years we’d been churning out this old tat. Hmm, all of a sudden, the penny’s beginning to drop. So OK, here we are, refreshed and ready to go! Pour yourself a pint of wine, throw your boots up on the desk, decompress, de-depress, and enjoy!

Liverpool 5-1 West Ham: Carabao Cup quarter-final and semi-final draw - as it happened

Curtis Jones starred as Liverpool swept West Ham aside to set up a semi-final clash with Fulham

3 min: A couple of nervous misplaced passes by Mavropanos. Then Areola slices out of play. The visitors not quite settled yet.

1 min: West Ham quickly ship possession and Liverpool launch it long. Areola dallies on the ball and is very nearly closed down by a combination of Gakpo, Elliott and Jones. He eventually clears his lines, panic over.

Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on pens): Carabao Cup quarter-final – as it happened

Mykhailo Mudryk’s late leveller set up a penalty shootout with Kieran Trippier’s miss proving costly for Newcastle

GOAL! Port Vale 0-1 Middlesbrough (Howson 11). An early setback for the League One club at Vale Park as Jonny Howson gives Boro the lead. A deflected shot from distance.

Chelsea get the ball rolling. They’re kicking towards the Shed End during this first half.

Newcastle 1-2 Milan: Champions League – as it happened

Joelinton’s screamer gave Newcastle hope, but Milan came back impressively to end their European dream

2 min: One hell of an atmosphere at St James’ Park tonight. Like that’s news worth flashing. The home fans celebrate a Gordon block-tackle like a goal. Gordon responds with a COME ON! The place is buzzing.

Milan get the ball rolling. They’re kicking towards the Gallowgate in this first half.

PSV Eindhoven 1-1 Arsenal: Champions League – as it happened

Honours were shared in a dead rubber in Eindhoven

4 min: On TNT Sports, Lucy Ward uses the phrases “low-key start” and “dead rubber”. So yes, that. Lucy knows.

2 min: Both teams take turns to have a wee look and feel of the ball. A decent enough atmosphere at the PSV Stadion, even if the state of Group B ensures it’s not exactly a cauldron of anticipation.

Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal: Premier League – as it happened

John McGinn’s early goal was enough to secure Villa’s 15th consecutive home win in the Premier League, a club record

2 min: … there’s plenty of pushing and shoving in a crowded six-yard box. Bailey eventually takes and fails to beat the first man. Arsenal clear their lines.

1 min: Arsenal stream forward only for Martinelli’s shot to be blocked by Kamara. Villa counter, and Bailey dribbles his way down the right to win the game’s first corner. At which …

Aston Villa 1-0 Man City, Sheff Utd 0-2 Liverpool and more: Premier League – as it happened

Villa deservedly beat the champions while Liverpool ground down the Blades as a wide-open title race began to take shape

The teams are out! Well they are at Brighton, Palace, Fulham and Sheffield United. Here we go, then. “Think I’m gonna go two screens as Liverpool are box office at the moment but so excited to see what happens at Villa Park,” writes Jamie O’Sullivan. “Stones’ availability seems huge, but I genuinely suspect Villa could roll City over or lose 0-4 tonight. I can’t remember the last time I saw a City bench that light on depth.”

Manchester United v Chelsea. The big news from Old Trafford concerns the benching of the woefully out-of-form Marcus Rashford. Chelsea meanwhile welcome Reece James back from injury. But don’t let me prattle on, because Tim de Lisle is giving tonight’s big match the bells-and-whistles1 MBM treatment. Click below for all that!
