Talking about Devon in Jilted

I've been so thrilled to have already gotten some lovely reviews for Jilted, and the positive response to this story and the series has been so gratifying!

I wanted to talk a little about my heroine in Jilted, Devon. One review for Jilted commented about how poorly Devon communicated her feelings with those she loved, and that it was frustrating knowing that a conversation could have avoided all that pain and heartache. This makes it sounds like communication is easy and everyone does it well. Wrong!

Communication is one of the biggest problems in relationships. It's not as simple as just talking about things. Sure, anyone can talk. But there are right ways to say things, and there are ways to say things that can hurt and make things worse. And when it comes to talking about feelings and our deepest fears and secrets - it's not that easy. Maybe for some people it might be, but I can say for me personally it is not easy for me to share those things, to make myself that vulnerable. True intimacy and love require it, but digging that deep is hard.

Devon grew up with a father who didn't want to talk about those things, after his wife left him and Devon. A stoic, proud man, he didn't want to let on how much that hurt or humiliated him. This is true of many men -- expressing feelings is considered wimpy. Thus, growing up with her father, Devon learned that that was how you dealt with feelings -- you kept them hidden deep inside and didn't let on if you were in pain.  And yes, that reluctance to admit her fears and how she really felt was a barrier to her relationship with Josh the first time around. But to say that things could have been resolved just by talking is a superficial observation, because opening yourself up and making yourself vulnerable in that way is definitely not an easy thing to do.

Of course, a good story has character growth and Devon comes to know this about herself, difficult as it is to admit her failing to herself. It takes courage to get past those things and I hope Devon's growth is ultimately satisfying to readers.

Jilted is out today!

I'm so excited for the first book of the Promise Harbor Wedding series to be out today! We've been talking a lot about this multi-author series so you may already know a little about it, but it's a four book series that centers around a wedding that goes all wrong. Each author took a member of the wedding party and wrote their romance story. It's not a series where the stories happen sequentially, but rather they all happen at the same time. Yes it was a little trick writing them that way, but it was also fun and very exciting to work with such talented authors!

Here's the blurb for the series:

Into even the best-planned wedding a little chaos must fall...
Join the residents of Promise Harbor, Massachusetts for the wedding of the season! Or, at least, for the most entertaining wedding of the season. The groom's been left at the altar, the Maid of Honor is MIA, the Best Man is in handcuffs and the bride has been swept off her feet--literally.
There's definitely love in the air, but things are going to get a little crazy before anyone gets to happily ever after.

Apology to readers:

I've been made aware that there are a few typos in Jilted and I want to apologize for that. This is a case where there was a bit of a rush to get the book edited and formatted so it would be available at bookstores like Amazon and B&N on release day, and that resulted in a few things slipping by the numerous sets of eyes that look at a book during the editing process. I want my books to be as close to perfect as they can, so I want to apologize to readers for these oversights.

I'm doing a small tour with Goddeess Fish Promotions and having a contest! I hope you'll check out some of the stops!

Promise Harbor Wedding Book 1
March 19, 2013

The wedding’s off but the honeymoon is on...
Devon can do this. She can show up at her ex-boyfriend Josh’s wedding, even though he’s marrying her ex-best-friend. She can show everyone she’s happy with her fabulous life in Boston, her great career, her amazing shoes — and she can show everyone she’s over him.
Truth is, her life isn’t so fabulous. She’s just been downsized out of her job, her Jimmy Choos won’t pay her rent, and...she’s still heartbroken that Josh chose family over her. The real reason she’s enduring this wedding is that her next stop is nearby Greenbush Island, her last hope of finding a new job.
Josh knows marrying long-time friend Allie will make everyone happy after the rough time their families have been through, and since the woman he really wanted to marry chose her career and big city life over himwhy not?
But the perfect wedding turns into a perfect disaster when Allie leaves him at the altar for another man. He never saw that coming! But hey, Devon’s there, offering to help him look for Allie on Greenbush Island, where he’d planned their honeymoon. Only, all they find are their old feelings for each other and a temptation to risk their hearts one more time... Warning: This book contains a firefighter hot enough to ignite flames, a woman who doesn’t want to get burned again, a honeymoon suite but no honeymoon, and sex not on the beach (sorry).

Hat Trick is now out!

KellyJamieson HatTrick 200 Author Feature: Kelly Jamieson So many readers have emailed me and messaged me about when the next Heller Brothers book will be out and HERE IT IS!!

I wanted to blog a little about the book so people know what to expect. This is not Matt Heller's story - I do have one planned for him, but there are reasons I didn't write his now. And here they are.

When I wrote Logan’s book, One Man Advantage, I set it in the fall, when the NHL trading deadline is, because Logan gets traded and his life turned upside down, which meant it happened close to the due date of Brianne’s pregnancy (from Breakaway). In One Man Advantage, in early December, the baby is born. Jase’s brothers are still pushing him to get a paternity test, as they did in Faceoff. But there was never a good way to work that result into One Man Advantage, which was really Nicole’s story. And so readers (and I!) were still left wondering — was Jase really the father of Brianne’s baby?

I knew I had to wrap up that story thread. And I have one more book planned, for youngest brother Matt. But at only age 19 in the first three books, I'm going to have to jump ahead at least 8-10 years to make him a hero the age I usually write. How would I work in a detail like the paternity of the baby, which at that point would be pretty old news? Especially if the baby wasn’t Jase’s? (I still didn’t know the answer at that point.) It would seem pretty obviously planted just to tie that up, and I didn’t like that. I also felt that readers would want to be there when that news was revealed, to experience the emotion of the moment, whatever the outcome, rather than read about something that happened ten years ago.

So seeing as the last story ended in early December, I decided to get all the Heller brothers home together for Christmas, and I wrote Hat Trick. Jase and Remi have just got the results of the paternity test. Tag and Kyla also have surprising news. And Nicole is meeting Logan’s overwhelming family for the first time in their new relationship, at a stressful time of year. We get to revisit all three brothers and their girlfriends and at last have the answer we’ve all been waiting for.

I never intended that thread to draw out through four stories, but somehow it did, and I find it so funny that I didn’t know the answer either until I wrote Face Off!

So now we just have to have patience as I try to find enough time to write Matt's story. Believe me, I want it done as much as anyone!
