Johnson County Library’s elementia: A Short History of Collaboration & Inspiration

by Bryan Voell

Johnson County (Kansas) Library’s elementia publication showcases the artistic and poetic talents of local teens. Published annually since the fall of 2005, it was born from the original visions of Teen Librarian Angel Dew in conjunction with Johnson County Library’s Young Adult Advisory Council (YAAC), Teen Poetry Café and other teen writing programs. The question at the heart of its inception was simple: How can we meaningfully engage with young adults within the overall miss...

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Artist Residencies in Libraries

We got a great question via Twitter several weeks ago about whether we knew of a comprehensive list of academic, public, and special libraries and archives that currently host or are interested in hosting artists in residence. While the LAIP features library artists in residence on a regular basis(and we know that people use these features to develop their own library artist in residence programs!)we’d like to expand this to become a more formal list of libraries who support artists in reside...

Learning with The Labs: professional development for all staff

We’ve been documenting the evolution of The Labs at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh since 2012, when the project had just secured a pilot grant. It’s all grown up now, and has grown up into a thoughtful and responsive makerspace model that adds real value to to the conversation. Check out the whole series on The Labs @ CLP. Enjoy! ~Erinn

Ulysses Mapped by Leopold’s Day

This post was originally published June 2012.

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting Stephen Crowe’s work on “Wake in Progress,” a series of illustrations and writings inspired by James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. Today we feature another piece of art lifted right from the text of Joyce’s Ulysses. – Laura

Inspired by the journey of Leopold Bloom through Dublin on June 16th, 1904, Leopold’s Day have released a beautifully designed limited edition map of Dublin city formed purely from the people,...

Participatory Drama and Literary Exploration at Craig High School

by Laura Damon-Moore

At the beginning of 2015 we established, with graduate students from the UW-Madison Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies program, a new project under the IArtLibraries “umbrella” called UnBound Players. The goal for this project is to activate libraries as performance spaces and to explore literary and technological themes through participatory drama workshops and more traditional performances.

In May UnBound Players facilitated the first Participatory Drama and Literary Exp...

A Garden of Poetry at Branksome Hall Asia

We love to hear about arts-incubating programs that were inspired by programs or ideas shared on the Library as Incubator Project, such as the Garden of Poetry at Branksome Hall Asia, an all-girl international boarding school in Korea. The teacher-librarian, Taryn Berghuis, got the idea in part from the PoeTree installation at Lawrence Public Library. Read on for how the program came to be! ~Laura

The library-museum connection: from paper to glass

The Corning Museum Of Glass is a special place where librarians, curators, artists, and educators all work together to share the history and craft of glass making. Rebecca Hopman’s series on her work at the CMOG’s Rakow Research Library is anexcellent template for creating and sustaining the library-as-incubator. Enjoy! ~Erinn
