Rules.

I took copies of Rules For Dating My Daughter “on the road” for the first time, appearing as a special guest at the inaugural DiNK convention in Denver, then a week later, stopping in for an afternoon at the MoCCA festival.

I’ve written a couple books now, so I know how things go. A book is about a topic, and at conventions you’ll find yourself engaging with passer-bys on said topic. I’ve chatted with folks about Queen, about my experiences in the Boy Scouts, and to a lesser extent politics and socialism. Chatting about parenting with the new one is a no-brainer, and frankly parenting is a topic I enjoy talking about a lot. I like being a parent, I like thinking about what it means to have kids, and I like hearing other people talk about their experiences as parents and kids.

Still… it hadn’t occurred to me that this would happen, but I’ve had a good share of fathers walk by, see the title and give me a Dad Thumbs-Up”, or in a number of instances call their own teenage daughters over to awkwardly observe the drawing of a man like me brandishing a shotgun and intimidating away would-be suitors. The dad laughs, his daughter squirms, they move on. I’m not sure this was what I was hoping for. Very few of these fellows seemed to pick up the comic after having their chuckle, so my chance to subvert a few ideas went with them.

That happened in Colorado more than New York. At MoCCA there was a bit of the flipside happening: folks coming by and tut-tutting the drawing and the title. Probably they and I would see eye to eye on many things. I need to figure out how to communicate that to those people without undermining my own work.

TCAF in Toronto is next. I’m thinking the solution to this might be putting more information about the book visibly on the table. Perhaps some pull-quotes and blurbs written in large legible lettering that I can simply point to.

The Underdog Myth

It’s often said, Americans Love an Underdog, but everywhere you look it’s a different story.

The best Queen albums are Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Day At The Races, Jazz and News of the World. The most underrated is Hot Space. The worst are Queen, A Kind of Magic, The Miracle, and Innuendo - bad album bookends to their catalogue.

Keeping on the theme of thinking ahead to TCAF and other comics festivals, something I’m considering offering are personalized sad-sack drawings, where I will draw a lovely pen and ink portrait of you looking like a mopey navel gazing autobio cartoonist.
