This is Hell!

As in This is Hell! radio, as in the place where those of us told to go to hell end up for a grilling by host Chuck Mertz. I’ll be on this morning at 11 on Chicago’s WNUR 89.3FM and will post audio here when it’s web-available.

My take on the CVS/Chamber breakup for incmagazine: “By in effect hiring the Chamber to serve as a public face of their cause, companies gain two benefits. One, they insulate their brands against the bad p.r. that could emerge if concerned members of the public found out they’re pushing unpopular measures – say, an auto company fighting safety rules. And two, they convey – accurately or not – that they are asking not for some self-serving favor, but progress for business and the economy as a whole.”

Sayeth ‘O’ Magazine

O, The Oprah Magazine picks “The Influence Machine” as one of its 10 Titles to Pick Up Now: “This meticulously researched political investigation should be shelved under true crime — a gripping exposé about the back-room take-over of democracy by big business.”

The Los Angeles Times calls The Influence Machine “important and probing work” and “a valuable and a sobering contribution to the study of power in American society.”

On the craziest news day in memory — same-sex marriage the law of the land, President Obama’s extraordinary Charleston eulogy, murderous New York prison escapee cornered and killed — Errol Louis and NY1 News, bless them, went ahead with 13 minutes with me on “The Influence Machine.” Watch it.

I’ll be reading/talking/signing at BookCourt in Brooklyn this Thursday. What better way to kick off the Fourth than with deep realtalk about the battle for America’s economic destiny? (Photo: Ben Lapidus)

Supreme Court’s Obamacare bottom line

Wondering why the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to support the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies? It doesn’t hurt that the health insurance industry supported the government here, while the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, often an influential voice in Supreme Court cases that affect business, stayed on the sidelines.

'Get it done anonymously’

In which Inc. editor James Ledbetter asks me some excellent questions about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its impact on American politics. This clip sums up the m.o.: “Find companies that needed something done in Washington and really be able to deliver on whatever those companies want to get done, but get it done anonymously.”
