Ecerpt from Shrouded in Darkness

"Damn it!"
In the hall, she tripped over her calico cat, Marmaduke, who streaked past her and up the stairs. She swore again. The banging continued. The crazy fool outside had given up on the doorbell long ago.
"John! Come on. Open up! It's me, Jake!"
At the mention of Johnny's name, Margot's stomach twisted and rolled with sudden nausea. "Okay! Okay! Give me a second."
She groped for the light switch to the hall. Nothing happened.
"Damn, stupid thing!" That's what she got for not replacing the house's ancient wiring.
"John, I'm freezing my ass off!"
"What do you expect," Margot muttered, wondering if this guy was playing some sick joke at her expense. Margot hit the outside light switch and peered through the glass panel beside the door. A man stood on the front porch. She didn't recognize him, but then again, the sheet of snow and the light's glare against the night backdrop didn't help matters.
A gun or pepper spray for protection sounded pretty nice right now, but Margot hated guns and had never expected the need, living on the outskirts of Greyson, Arizona. It wasn't like this town up in the White Mountains was loaded with crime. The worst incident had been a case of disorderly conduct last winter, and that had been from a drunken tourist.
"Who is it?"
A pause on the other side followed—almost as if she'd surprised him.
"Margot? Is that you? It's Jake Preston."
Though muffled, his words were clear enough to make out. The name sounded familiar, but she couldn't recall what Johnny had said about him.
Margot frowned and winced as pain cut across her temple, brow and the base of her skull. She should have stopped at one glass of wine. "How do you know Johnny?"
"I worked with him at Miltronics for several years on the outskirts of Boston."
Margot debated about turning this Jake away as she watched him stamp his feet against the porch. He must be freezing—what with the wind and snow.
"I know it's late, but I need to talk to John. Please. If you could just get him, you'll see I'm harmless."
The urgency in his voice made her decide. He obviously didn't know about her brother. She sighed heavily. What she had to tell him wasn't going to be easy.
Margot unlatched the lock and opened the door.
An angry gust of wind burst into the house, tearing the knob from her grasp. The door flew wide and crashed against the wall. Gasping, she reeled back as snow flew in, stabbing her face with icy spikes.
"Here, let me." He stepped inside and shoved the door closed with his shoulder. He turned his back against the light from the kitchen, casting his face in shadow. His baseball cap further shielded his features—along with sunglasses of all things.
How very odd. Sudden apprehension curled up her spine as Margot stepped away from Jake and the doorway. Topping a good six-feet, he appeared far larger than when he'd stood behind a locked door.
"What are the sunglasses for?" she asked.
"The light."
"What?"
"My eyes. They're sensitive to light. I injured both corneas as a child."
"Oh." She must have been staring at him like an idiot, but something about him made her uneasy. And it wasn't just the glasses and pale complexion.
He must have sensed her disquiet, because he explained further, "It's called traumatic iritis. It's something I've had to live with for as long as I can remember." He shrugged a large canvas backpack from his shoulder and placed it on the floor. "Can you get John for me?"
"He's dead."
Margot never intended the words to come out so abrupt and final, but...it hurt. Balling her hands into fists, she fought against the sudden tears that burned the back of her eyes. Please no. Not now. She couldn't fall apart in front of this stranger.
"He can't be. That's impossible."

Shrouded in Darkness
Blurb:
Jake Preston is on borrowed time. If he doesn't stumble upon a miracle and soon, he'll endup dead. And even if he does, he still might end up dead with a clever killer hounding his heels. He believes that the one miracle and antidote to save him is in Margot Davenport's house, across the country and miles away from Boston. Somewhere locked in her home is the key to reversing an experiment that is killing him with each breath he takes.
Margot doesn't particularly care if she ends up dead. She's lost everything she's ever cared for. A divorce and the loss of her job as a corporate lawyer has left her with little faith in herself or in anyone else. Most importantly, she's lost the one person on this earth she's looked up to and cherished–her brother, Johnny. His death in a car accident has devastated her, and she can't find the willpower to pull herself from the chasm she's fallen into. Her only solace is at the bottom of a wineglass. Having moved back to the small town in northern Arizona where she was raised, she's made a point of isolating herself both mentally and physically from everyone other than a few chosen friends. Little does she know that her life is going to explode into chaos.

To All The Books I've Loved Before Guest Blog by James Tuck
There have been many, many books read by yours truly. Some were good, some were bad. A few were truly terrible, but a few were truly spectacular.
I want to share with you some of those. Now a lot of these truly spectacular books will fall outside of the genre of urban fantasy. This isn't because I don't love urban fantasy. It's just that I am pulling from my entire reading career which at this point spans almost 37 years. Yes, I have been reading for almost FOUR DECADES. So let's get started.
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton- Stay Gold Ponyboy, Stay Gold. I found this book in the eighth grade and I read it once or twice a year every year through the end of high school. It is such a great book. I read a lot of S. E. Hinton and the rest of her stuff was hit or miss. None of it captured the pure essence that is The Outsiders. It's not often that a movie adaptation is as true to the source material as this one was. The book and the movie are both classic must haves. And, just FYI, I was totally a greaser.
The Light At The End by John Skipp and Craig Spector- This book was the absolute first urban fantasy I ever read. I was 16 or so when it came out. It was a horror book, but it follows a kid in modern day New York (circa 1986) who is bitten and turned into a vampire. His friends then hunt him down. It is EXCELLENT. I really recommend it, even if it might be a tad bit dated. Let me put it this way. I have owned the same copy I first read and carried it with me through many, many moves over the last 26 years.
Bury Me Deep by Harold Q. Masur- One of the first "hardboiled" detective novels I ever read. I use quotation marks because the main character isn't a detective at all, he's Scott Jordan, attorney. Truthfully I picked this up from my aunt's bag of yard sale books because there was a naked lady, sorry a naked dame, painted on the cover. I read it and fell in love. I carried that same copy from 1947 until it disappeared on me. My wonderful wife found it and re-bought it for me. It is still one of the best hardboiled books I have ever read. You want authentic 1947 detective fiction then go find this and buy it.
Flood by Andrew Vachss- The first book of the Burke series. These books go past hardboiled and into a dark, revenge driven place. Burke is a great character who is surrounded by a cast as far out as the cast of my book. This one is a bit dated, taking place in an obvious 80's NYC, but a great book and a great series.
High Fidelity by Nick Hornby- Yes this was an awesome movie with John Cusack. One of my personal favorites. But the book man, well, the book is the most honest book about how men think that I have ever read. Seriously. Hornby really lays this character out in the open for you to dissect and it is a great read.
Obsidian Butterfly by Laurell K. Hamilton- Oh wow. Now I picked up the Anita Blake series with this book and it was a helluva place to start. Obsidian Butterfly frequently tops most people's lists as the best Anita book of the series. I have to agree, but that may be because it was my introduction to a world and a character that I love. Laurell really writes a helluva book and anyone who gets paid to write urban fantasy today owes her a huge debt of gratitude. You can argue whether she was the first urban fantasy author if you want (my vote? Yes, she is the first modern urban fantasy author) but you cannot deny that she was the first author to make publishers realize that urban fantasy could sell. Still an amazing book. If you are the one person who hasn't read it then go out and pick it up. Like now.
And that is my list of my favorite books. I know a lot of them are not urban fantasy, but they are all books that I consider formative of my writing today. I learned a lot from them that I put into BLOOD AND BULLETS and the rest of the Deacon Chalk series. I hope you do check some of them out if you haven't ever read them. Feel free to hit me up and let me know what you thought of them too.
Book Description:
BLOOD AND BULLETS: A Deacon Chalk Occult Bounty Hunter novel
Since hunting down the monster who took the lives of his wife and children five years ago, occult bounty-hunter Deacon Chalk has lived by only one rule.
He does not work for the monsters. He kills them.
So why would a vampire try to hire him as protection against another monster hunter? After enforcing his only rule Deacon goes to meet the target, a vampire slayer named Nyteblade. Professional courtesy demands he tell this Nyteblade the vampires are hiring people to kill him. Deacon finds the vampire slayer waiting in an alley.
Waiting to stake him.
He discovers that Nyteblade is a bumbling, fumbling, wanna-be instead of a badass vampire hunter. Someone who needs saving from monsters instead of the other way around. This is proven when a horde of vampires descend and he has to escape while trying to keep Nyteblade alive.
Someone has set Deacon up. Someone wants him dead.
Someone should have sent more vampires.
Bound and determined, Deacon will find out who tried to kill him no matter how many bloodsuckers, were-spiders, cursed immortals, undead strippers, or insanely powerful hell-bitches he has to wade through.
It's going to be a long night.

Teaser Excerpt Caressed by Night by Amanda J Greene

"You've healed," she whispered. Her voice was rough and her throat ached from her screams. "Your wounds are gone. That…that is impossible."
"Not for me," he grated.
Her eyes narrowed. "What are you?"
He dropped his head. Why now? Why did it have to happen this way? He cursed, damning Fate for the tricks she played. He hadn't wanted it to happen this way. He wanted them to take their time, to get to know one another before he shared his secret with her. Now he was cornered. He had to tell her or―no. He would not erase her memory; he could not disrespect her that way. He would not take the coward's way out.
He had to tell her.
His heart clenched. What if she rejected him? What if she hated him? What if he repulsed her? She was his mate, but that was no guarantee that she would understand, that she would stay with him or that she would love him.
"What are you?" she demanded again, her voice shaking.
Her thoughts screamed at him. Vampire. Vampire. Vampire! He forced his gift aside, shoving it back into the darkness of his mind.
"I think you already know," he said before pulling his shirt closed.

Crazy Titles Sometimes Make the Best Stories: Guest blog and Giveaway with Theresa Meyers

Writers are creative people. Ok, reality check, writers are sometimes silly, imaginative people. Case in point, sometimes I come up with titles before I even know what a story is going to be. Sometimes it'll be a piece of a jingle on the radio or a line out of a song. Sometimes it's from a snippet of dialog I overheard, or I begin riffing off favorite movies for titles (which resulted in several James Bond style titles in my written or soon to be written file including The Vampire With the Gold Fang, Being Vampire is Not Enough and The Vampire Who Loved Me.)One day the Harlequin authors for Nocturne were having a discussion on our writer's loop. We were talking about the line, how it differs from other lines in Harlequin and someone brought up titles. This naturally led us into a contest among one another to see who could create the goofiest titles. Things like the Billionaire Cowboy Vampire's Secret Virgin Mistress (that's where the silly came in). But what happened from that silly exercise was a spark of imagination. The title The Half-Breed Vampire stuck. I didn't know what the story was going to be exactly. I just knew he was going to obviously be half vampire and half something else. And this is where the imagination kicks in…From the title I started brainstorming. Who was this half-breed? What was he? How'd he get this way? Where there more of them, why or why not? Was it something he could change? Something he was proud of or ashamed of? Why? (see, we're a bit crazy too, asking all these questions about totally fictional characters as if we're prepping to interview a celebrity on TMZ or something.)Anyway, what eventually happened is I started looking at secondary characters from the security team in The Vampire Who Loved Me. Which one of them had the most to lose? Which one was the most explosive? The demolitions expert of course!I knew his name was Slade Donovan, but the moment I started writing the book I found out he had another name: Blackwolf. Now let me be perfectly honest and tell you we might joke about the amensiatic character, but writing one is hard work! All the things I normally did to find out who my character was, his traits, his likes and dislikes, his past didn't work because he didn't even know them! This was the first book where I had to discover my character's past along with him, which made writing frustrating at times, and glorious at other times. To find out how he fit into the story, how he became both shape-shifting Werewolf and full-force vampire was a wild journey. And in many ways Slade discovers that you have to make your own path in the world. Choose your own family, much in the same way that the heroine Rania does, but for different reasons. By far, this third book in my Sons of Midnight mini-series was the most fun to write. How can you not enjoy a motorcycle bad boy vampire paired up with a straight-laced cop with a chip on her shoulder? The chemistry alone kept me up writing some nights way past the time to go to sleep. So can you have a half-breed Vampire? Sure! It's an unusual mix, but some of the best stories come from the strangest titles.

Raised by a bibliophile who made the dining room into a library, Theresa has always been a lover of books and stories. First a writer for newspapers, then for national magazines, she started her first novel in high school, eventually enrolling in a Writer's Digest course and putting the book under the bed until she joined Romance Writers of America in 1993.
In 2005 she was selected as one of eleven finalists for the American Title II contest, the American Idol of books. She is married to the first man she ever went on a real date with (to their high school prom), who she knew was hero material when he suffered through having to let her parents drive, and her brother sit between them in the backseat of the car. They currently live in a Victorian house on a mini farm in the Pacific Northwest with their two children, three cats, an old chestnut Arabian gelding, an energetic mini-Aussie shepherd puppy, several rabbits, a dozen chickens and an out-of-control herb garden.

A Sliver of Shadow
Book 2 Abby Sinclair Series
By Allison Pang
A Sliver of Shadow Blurb:
Just when her new life as a TouchStone – a mortal bound to help OtherFolk cross between Faery and human worlds – seems to be settling down, Abby Sinclair is left in charge when the Protectorate, Moira, leaves for the Faery Court. And when the Protectorate's away…let's just say things spiral out of control when a spell on Abby backfires and the Faery Queen declares the Doors between their worlds officially closed.
The results are disastrous for both sides: OtherFolk trapped in the mortal world are beginning to fade, while Faerie is on the brink of war with the daemons of Hell. Along with her brooding eleven prince Talivar and sexy incubus Brystion, Abby ventures to the CrossRoads in an attempt to override the Queen's magic. But nothing in this beautiful, dangerous realm will compare to the discoveries she's making about her past, her destiny, and what she will sacrifice for those she loves.

A marine biologist in a former life, Allison Pang turned to a life of crime to finance her wild spending habits and need to collect Faberge eggs. A cat thief of notable repute, she spends her days sleeping and nights scaling walls and wooing dancing boys….Well, at least the marine biology part is true. But she was taloned by a hawk once. She also loves Hello Kitty, sparkly shoes, and gorgeous violinists.
She spends her days in Northern Virginia working as a cube grunt and her nights waiting on her kids and cats, punctuated by the occasional husbandly serenade. Sometimes she even manages to write. Mostly she just makes it up as she goes.

Spotlight on Bandit Creek Books

By Lawna Mackie
As far as twelve-year old Quinn is concerned Christmas has lost its magic. Since his father's death life has lost its sparkle. His mom is now a widow struggling to put food on the table. Quinn is no help, and the mysterious illness afflicting him only makes things worse.
Even Christmas, complete with decorated trees, ribbons and bows has no meaning…then along comes Jazira.
Jazira doesn't know what happened to her former self, the eleven-year old little girl. She drowned, didn't she, along with half the other folk of Bandit Creek in 1911? Somehow, she's grown four furry legs complimented with a large wolf head and body. Scared and alone, she reaches out to Quinn and a strong bond is formed. Jazira learns Quinn, and his mother, are threatened by a wealthy powerful citizen of Bandit Creek. She is determined to protect her new family, no matter what.
Christmas Eve finds Quinn staring up at the adorned tree and muttering a quiet prayer. Will the Spirits of Christmas grant his wish, or will the evil surrounding Bandit Creek prevail once again?

I have always believed in fairy tales and when I got tired of the old ones I made up my own. Each story would have a hero and heroine, but they were anything but typical. I devoured my first romance novel when I was a teenager. I couldn't read them fast enough. Years later I stumbled across my first paranormal romance…an injustice would be done if I tried to explain my joy when I found this genre of romance. My passion was finally in print.
Now, with the help of my bizarre dreams and crazy imagination, I have started to write and intend to share my stories with you. I hope you'll love them as much as I do. I am truly blessed. My husband and my animals are my inspiration. We live on a small acreage in Didsbury, Alberta, with our most beloved companions, Dozer, Daisy and Mandarin. Happy reading everyone, I sure would love to hear from you. www.lawnamackie.ca
ExcerptChapter One
BANDIT CREEK, MONTANA, 1912
Dried leaves crunched beneath twelve-year old Quinn's weight as he sank to his knees. His throat burned and he swallowed hard, his breath catching in his chest. He would not cry. He wouldn't! In slow motion, he watched a drop of his crimson blood splatter against the carpet of fallen leaves. Anger and hurt brought unshed tears to his eyes.
The wind gusted amongst the trees, blowing the hair away from his face and forcing him to sit up. Whatever leaves were left on the poplars rustled and the tall spruce groaned and cracked, swaying along in the breeze.
Quinn shook his head and pounded the ground with his fist.
The flood of Bandit Creek a year ago had stolen his hopes, dreams and happiness. Despite the rebuilding of the town, evil thrived in many forms.
Countless bodies had never been recovered. Men, women and children, drowned, trapped at the bottom of the lake…Lost Lake as it was now called. A year later, murder, superstition, possession, and mysterious illnesses engulfed the town and survivors of the flood.
Choking back the painful memories, his fingertips traced his father's name etched in the tombstone. With the back of his hand, he wiped the blood away from his nose and mouth. He could almost hear his Pa's deep soothing voice. You're strong, Quinn. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. Deep down he hoped his father was right.
Chapter Two
Samuel Campton sat silently on his horse Roman while the gelding carefully plodded along the winding trail towards Lost Lake. Fresh snow during the night left a white carpet over the dirt and covered the boughs of the evergreens.
He hated Lost Lake and the unusual feeling he felt every time he checked his trap line near its shoreline. Roman even slowed his already leisurely pace as they neared the water. Samuel touched a spur to the animal's flank, hurrying him forward along the darkened trail. Ahead beams of light streamed through the canopy of close knit branches.
What broke the eerie silence was a large splash and splutter of water followed by terrified whimpers. Without hesitation, Samuel kicked Roman into a full gallop, dashing toward the noise and the lake. Fifty feet from the edge of the shore, he pulled the horse to a halt and dismounted. He slid his Winchester rifle free from the scabbard. The trees crowded the shore and blocked a clear view of the water. All too soon, he found himself at the edge of the lake staring at the largest wolf he'd ever seen.
An ice chunk floated about twenty-five feet from shore, and clinging to it by its paws was a

Shameless is Now on Tour

To give you a little taste of Shameless, here's an excerpt:
Chapter One Trey Turner tipped the plastic bottle and watched the little white pills scatter across the desktop. One would take the edge off; twenty would end it all. He considered his options. He wasn't ready to give up; he couldn't do that to his family. He put one of the pills on his tongue and swallowed it with a mouthful of scotch as the phone rang. He knew it was the morning radio show calling to interview him. His manager, Luc Spencer, had arranged it and, despite his protests, Luc insisted it was necessary. The public was demanding answers; it was time to end the speculation. He checked the call display and pushed the button to activate the call. "Hello." "Trey, Johnny Madson, KX790 in Nashville. How the hell are ya this mornin', buddy?"Trey rubbed his eyes, willing the pill to take effect. "I'm good." "We're going live in three minutes. Stand by." Trey endured the longest three minutes of his life as he waited for the radio host to return. He glanced at the list of questions and answers his publicist, Avery, had provided. He'd been doing this long enough to know they always surprised you with questions they knew were off-limits. He hoped he was sharp enough to dodge the bullets this morning. "Trey, we're live. Our listeners are anxious to hear about what's been happening with the king of country music. Where've you been, man?" "I've been in the studio working on the next album." "That's what we like to hear. Tell me, when do you plan to release it?" "By early next year, I hope.""Can we assume you're planning a world tour to promote the new album?" In his current state of mind, just the thought of a tour was overwhelming, but he owed it to his fans and his label. "That's the plan, Johnny." "Good stuff. I know your fans are looking forward to that. We get calls and emails about you every day. People want to know what you've been up to. They're dying to know when the new album's coming out." He laughed. "The pressure's on, man." "Yeah, I know. I plan to deliver the goods." If only he could figure out how to break through the mother of all creative blocks and write a song he wouldn't be embarrassed to attach his name to. "So why did you decide to sign with a new record label, Trey?" Because my old label was putting pressure on me to get off my ass and produce a record, he thought, considering the fall-out if he came clean. He was tempted to tell the truth and accept the ramifications. He was so tired of living a lie, pretending to be the man, the musician, everyone expected him to be. "There was just a difference of opinion with the old label. No hard feelings." "Are you expecting this album to go platinum like all the others?" Platinum, hell he would be satisfied if it didn't end his career. "We'll see what happens, Johnny. It's up to the public to decide." "So, you've been spotted around town with some of the most beautiful women in Nashville. Is there anyone special in your life right now?"He clenched his jaw in frustration. He had come to expect this question, but he still resented it. "No, not really." Megan would take offense, but he didn't care."You are one of the most eligible bachelors in the world. Think you'll ever marry again?" "No." The only woman he wanted to call his wife was determined to forget he was alive. He'd had his one chance at forever and he blew it. He sure as hell didn't deserve another one. "Can you tell us about the car wreck you were involved in last year, Trey? We understand a woman and young child were killed. Your Hummer and their mini-van were hit by the driver of a tractor trailer who feel asleep at the wheel, right? Rumour has it you were lucky to escape with your life. That would have been a hell of a loss for country music, man." Trey wanted to tell him the loss of life that occurred was much more valuable than his, but he kept his mouth shut. He could imagine the headlines: Country Superstar Trey Turner Wishes He Had Been the One to Die in Fatal Crash."I'd rather not discuss that, Johnny." "Sure, I understand. We've all heard you've fallen off the wagon after three years of sobriety. Is that true, Trey?" He glanced at the highball of scotch to his right. "I'd rather not get into it." Which he knew was akin to admitting guilt. His manager and publicist would go ballistic, not to mention his record label. He had to end this call or risk digging himself a deeper hole. "Look, man, it's been good talking to you, but I gotta roll." "Yeah, sure. Thanks for talking to us, Trey. We're all looking forward to the new album, so don't keep your fans waiting too long." "I'll try not to. Thanks, Johnny." He pressed the button to end the call. His hand shook as he reached for the crystal glass. He took a long swallow of the amber liquid, savouring the familiar burn on the way down. He knew it was toxic, eating him alive from the inside out. He hated that he needed it, hated the fact that alcohol was the only thing that seemed to take the edge off and calm the fear and anxiety so he could get through another day. He looked up at the ceiling. "What the hell am I gonna do?" he whispered. He needed help, was desperate for guidance, but had no idea where to turn. His faith had been tested to the limits, and he couldn't face the idea of admitting the truth to his friends and family. He had never felt so alone. He knew that every day he lived without creative inspiration was another day closer to sealing his fate. He couldn't stall his manager and record label forever. They expected answers and he knew he had to tell them the truth; his career was over. But every time he tried to tell his best friend and manager, he panicked. He was terrified that, without music, he was looking into the abyss of a dark, empty, meaningless future. His music was the only thing he had left. He pulled the newspaper clipping out of his desk and stared at the black and white photo of the little girl who had died in the fiery crash. Six years old, the same age his daughter would have been. Trey couldn't comprehend why he had been spared when a little girl with her whole life ahead of her had been taken. If he could, he would have traded places with her in a heartbeat, given her a chance at the life his daughter deserved. A knock on the door of his studio interrupted his reverie and he silently wished he could escape. Escape the questions and expectations of a world where he no longer felt he belonged. "Come in." His sister poked her head in the door. "Hey, just heard you on the radio, big shot." He smiled. His sister was one of the few people who could still make him smile. Perhaps because she didn't see him as Trey Turner, money machine. She simply saw him as her over-protective big brother. He and his sister had always been close, especially before and during his marriage. Marisa and his ex-wife had become fast friends, bonding like sisters soon after they met. She tried not to take sides, but he knew she blamed him for the marriage falling apart. Marisa made the effort to maintain contact with him, but their relationship hadn't been the same since his divorce. Nothing in his life had been the same since his divorce. He sighed, scrubbing his hands over his face. He rubbed his eyes and stroked the two-day growth of beard. He knew he must look like hell, but he couldn't summon the energy to care. "What's up, Marisa?" "I could ask you the same. You look like you've been on one hell of a bender." She eyed the highball of scotch on the desk. "Have you?" "No, just not sleeping much." Truth be told, he felt like he hadn't had a decent night's sleep in years. She glanced at the glass again, sighing. "Isn't it a little early for that, Trey?" He chuckled, the sound unfamiliar to his own ears. It had been a long time since he'd had any reason to laugh. "Honey, it's gotta be five o'clock somewhere." She folded her arms across her chest and glared at him, but he could see the fear and disappointment lurking beneath the anger. "Damn it. It's not funny, Trey." Her expression softened and he saw the pity. God, he hated to be pitied almost as much as he hated feeling useless, inept, and washed up. "I'm worried about you. So are Mama and Daddy. You haven't been the same since the accident." He slid the newspaper clipping under a stack of documents. He didn't want her to know he'd been obsessing about the past again. Why couldn't he just let it go, look to the future? Maybe he could stand the thought of a life without music if he wasn't facing it alone. He sighed. No sense wishing for the impossible. "Nothing to worry about, sis. I'm fine." "Prove it." She claimed the chair across from him. "Come to Jimmy's tonight. You and I haven't spent any time together in months." He shook his head. He hadn't been back to his old haunt since the night of the accident. He had been on the wagon that night, not a drop to drink, not that it mattered. Two innocent people still lost their lives and he lost what little remained of the life he'd known. If he hadn't gone to the bar that night, he wouldn't have been on the road at two a.m., wouldn't have rushed to the aid of the minivans' passengers. He wouldn't have been holding the hand of that little girl as he watched her slip away. "Sorry, not interested." Marisa reached across the desk and put her hand on his arm. "Trey, please do this for me." "That's the last place I want to go tonight." He glanced at the date on his phone, a neon reminder of that fateful day exactly one year ago. Not that he needed to be reminded. The visions were burned in his memory like a bad horror flick on perpetual rewind. "I think you need help." He knew he needed help, had for years, but the only person who could help him wanted to forget he was alive. "Spare me your dime-store psychology, Marisa. Stick to what you know best, clothes and shoes." He knew that would hit a nerve, piss her off enough to drive her away. "Do you think we're going to sit by and let you self-destruct again, Trey?" Again. Like he had five years ago when Sierra left him and he lost his will to live. "You were sober for almost three years. Why the hell are you doing this? You're punishing yourself for an accident that wasn't even your fault." He saw the tears in her eyes and hated that he was causing the people he loved so much pain. He knew they would be better off without him. Maybe he should just disappear. Hole up somewhere far away and drink away the past six years of his life. "This may not have been my fault, but what about the other accident?" The accident that took my baby girl and the woman I loved, he thought. "You have to stop punishing yourself for that. It wasn't your fault."He wondered, was it an accident or divine intervention? Maybe God was punishing him for every thoughtless, selfish thing he'd ever done. Maybe He disapproved of his tactics, trampling anyone and everyone on his mission to dominate the country music industry. It was never enough. No matter how many awards he'd won, records he'd sold, or millions he'd made, it had never been never enough. He had worked longer and harder every day in his quest for supremacy until he finally wound up alone. He propped his elbows on the desk, dropping his head in his hands. "Maybe it was an accident. I don't know. What I do know is that my stupidity, my recklessness, caused Sierra to go into labour ten weeks early. If I hadn't been arguing with her, I wouldn't have been distracted. I would have been able to stop in time." He swallowed hard, trying to dislodge the grief blocking his airway. "We lost our daughter because of me, Marisa." She reached out to him, but he pushed her away. He didn't want her sympathy, didn't deserve it. "Sierra has forgiven you, Trey. I think it's time for you to forgive yourself." "Never," he whispered. To forgive himself would dishonor Callie's memory. He had come to terms with who he was: a self-indulgent, power-hungry, control freak, and because of his failings, his angel had died before she had a chance at life. He wasn't worthy of forgiveness. She leaned back in her chair, staring at him like she was looking at a stranger. "Is that why you haven't been able to get past this accident? Because it reminded you of what happened back then?" He got up and crossed the room, feeling trapped, like a caged animal desperate to escape the confines of a life behind bars. Only he was trapped by gaping wounds that time and booze couldn't heal and mistakes that he couldn't make up for, no matter how much he wished he could. "I don't want to talk about this anymore, Marisa. Please, just go."She hesitated and he knew she wanted to object. "Fine," she said softly. "I'll leave, but only if you promise to come to Jimmy's tonight." He just wanted to be alone, alone with his misery and memories. "I'll be there. Just go now, please."

March 15 SpotlightDeep In the Heart Romance http://www.deepintheheartromance.com/

By Cheryl Douglas
Release Date – February 2012
Trey Turner may be topping the country music charts but his life has been going downhill since his wife left him five years ago. He's desperate to make amends for the mistakes he's made and convince Sierra their love deserves a second chance.
Sierra Brooks is happy for the first time since her divorce. She has a career she loves and a fiancé who loves her. Unfortunately, her fiancé isn't the only man professing his love. He may be able to offer her safety and security but will she decide to risk everything for another chance with the man who broke her heart?

It took me thirty-seven years to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I thought I'd found my calling. In fact, I worked as a nutritionist for twelve years before I finally admitted to myself that while I enjoyed my work, I couldn't imagine doing it for the next thirty years.
My sub-conscious knew that I wanted to be a writer long before the conscious part of my mind decided to get with the program.
While my sub-conscious was hard at work creating character profiles, plots and storylines, my conscious mind was telling me it was crazy to give up a successful business on the off-chance one of my manuscripts might rise to the top of someone's never-ending slush pile. After years of listening to that negative voice, I was finally ready to stop making excuses, face the fear and follow my dream of becoming a full-time writer, no matter the outcome. I'm so thankful I did.
I love bringing my characters to life and I am so grateful to have readers who love those characters as much as I do.
When I take a break from writing it's to spend time with my husband (a.k.a. my real life hero), my son, and my writing partner, Tia, a spirited Havanese who enjoys tapping her paw on my keyboard whenever I need a little comic relief.

Holy Cauldron-bats, is it the caped crusader…Merlin? Guest Blog with Priya Ardis

Holy Cauldron-bats, is it the caped crusader…Merlin?
You've heard the legends. His name pops up everywhere. Merlin. He's some old dude with a long white beard, pointy hat, and robes. But does the most powerful wizard in the world really have to be a cartoon character? Well, I thought, why not trade in the robe for…tights?
While the Legend of Arthur is a classic story and the underlying themes of brotherhood, nobility, and the infamous love triangle still appeal today, when was the last time you looked at them through a more modern lens? If you think about it, Merlin has always been the Arthurian superhero. In My Boyfriend Merlin, I sharpened the focus on this idea.
So, how to modernize Merlin as a superhero?
First, every superhero needs an alter-ego. Okay, no tights I promise. Actually I prefer jeans and a biker jacket. That's what Clark Kent wore when he was being badass—under the influence of red kryptonite, of course. The classic struggle for the superhero is his dual identity. Is he really Clark Kent/Peter Parker/BruceWayne? Or is he really the superhero? Which one does he want to be? In My Boyfriend Merlin, Merlin's alter-ego is Matt. This is a huge struggle in the book for Merlin…does he want to be the "Most Powerful Wizard in the World" or does he want to be plain-old Matt?
Second, every superhero needs an equally powerful super-villain. Yeah, there are minion bad guys but there is only one we truly love to hate. Batman had the Joker. Superman vs. Lex Luthor. When you think about the legends, Merlin didn't really have one. The legends say that Merlin was tricked into defeat by a witch/nymph/girl called Viviane/Nimue. In My Boyfriend Merlin, Merlin has one very powerful and contentious relationship—his brother Vivane, aka Vane. After all, brothers can make the best friends but as archenemies they can be truly devastating.
Third, every superhero needs a super-power. Well, this was a no brainer. Merlin is the most powerful wizard in the world and all that. But his true super-power lies in being able to tell the future. (Not that he can necessarily stop the visions from happening!)
Fourth, every superhero needs to obsess over—the girl. Calling Lois Lane. In My Boyfriend Merlin, Arriane, aka Ryan, gives our hero a run for his magic. Since the story is told from her point of view, it's interesting to see what our hero looks like from her perspective. Also she's the tipping point…leading us into the last superhero modernization of Merlin...
Fifth, every superhero needs a cause in the here and now. Batman saves the city. Superman saves the world. I think Thor saved the galaxy. In My Boyfriend Merlin, the sword and stone crashes out of nowhere into the middle of London. Why is it here? What does it mean? It can't be good. Turn on the Merlin-signal, commissioner. We need a hero!

Novel Blurb:
If you can't trust your boyfriend, who can you trust?
In this teen Arthurian, 17-year-old student president Arriane, aka Ryan, DuLac just found out her badass biker boyfriend, Matt, is a little older than he was letting on. By a few eons.
In fact, he is really Merlin--the Merlin, King Arthur's Merlin, the greatest wizard who ever lived. But Ryan's not impressed. Tired of being a relationship loser, she'd rather kick his legendary behind.
Sure, the world has been crazy ever since the sword and the stone fell out of the sky like a meteor. But despite gruesome gargoyles, a new world of magic, and the guy driving her crazy, Ryan knows that family is everything. Will Merlin sacrifice hers to save the world? Will she be able to stop him?

Storygirl, Priya Ardis, loves books of all kinds--but especially the gooey ones that make your nose leak and let your latte go cold. Her young adult novel, My Boyfriend Merlin, came from a childhood of playing too much She-Ra and watching too much Spock. She started her first book at sixteen, writing in notebooks on long train rides. While reading My Boyfriend Merlin, she recommends pajamas first and a pumpkin spice anything for taste.
What does she like to read? YA books! Coming-of-age books. Books with fantasy and magic with a cool heroine that's really just the girl next door. Books about mythology and legends. And, hello, Mr. Darcy anyone?
Her favorite Arthurian piece is the poem The Lady of Shalott by Lord Alfred Tennyson.
A hopeless romantic, she's a longtime member of the Romance Writer's of America
