Channeling Stalingrad: Guest Blog and Giveaway with Isabo Kelly

I can’t claim to be a huge history buff, though I do like historical novels and I invariably end up watching shows about history or movies set in different time periods. I love museums and touring ancient sites. So I like history. I’m just not what you might call an expert on any given topic.
So when I say I was channeling the siege on Stalingrad when I started the Fire and Tears series, take that with a grain of salt. *g*
The truth is, I only know a little bit about the battle of Stalingrad (when the Germans invaded the city during World War II). I know just enough to have a flavor of what life might possibly be like under the strains of an enemy invasion. Add to that the little bits and pieces I’ve picked up about the occupation of France during WWII, and I’ve got a lot of very basic stuff to pull from when I’m world building.
And those little bits and pieces, those half-remembered details without the great heaping background of full scholarly knowledge, actually made writing about a city in the middle of a war much easier. I built the war, the world, the city from my imagination and informed it with those vague memories to bring life to the setting, but I didn’t feel the need to match my warzone to any other. I made up one of my own, and it took on a life of its own.
Writers get ideas from all over the place, which is why I like to read, see and watch all kinds of different things. All of it goes into the memory files and when I need something—even if it’s just a vague feeling or detail—it’s there for me to pull into the fiction. It’s a bit like method acting actually.
So when I started the Fire and Tears series, I was actually using my vague memories of Stalingrad to build my world. But don’t expect to see Stalingrad in the pages of my books. I’m not that good at history.
Probably a good thing I write fantasy romance, huh?
So do you have a topic you like to read about but don’t necessarily feel the need to study it in depth?

Excerpt 1
Laryssa had heard the customer behind her, but the damn mirror wire wouldn’t seem to catch right. It kept slipping and she cursed under her breath, hoping she wouldn’t drop it. If she could just hold it up a minute longer, she could get it to hang squarely on the wall. She fingered the hook that she’d just renailed into the wall and then moved her thumb over to the thin metal string. With a final shove upward, she attempted to flick it into place. But as the wire caught, it sliced into her flesh. A sharp sting threw her off balance, and her pumps began to waver. Shit. Not again. “Oh my God!” Laryssa squeaked as she fell backwards, fully expecting to crack her head open on one of the many sharp-edged desks that sat adjacent to where she’d been working. As she felt strong male hands slide up under her ribcage, grazing her breasts, she gasped. She wasn’t sure whether to thank the stranger or call the police, but as she turned her face to try to see him, she immediately recognized her rescuer. “It’s you,” she stammered, clutching his arms. Laryssa giggled nervously, realizing how once again she’d foolishly fallen in front of the sexy vampire. And like last night, he’d caught her. She couldn’t believe how clumsy she’d all of a sudden become. She tried to relax and find her footing, but her heart was beating so fast that she could barely think. What is he doing here in my shop? How did he find me? Like a story book flipping pages, her mind whirled until she remembered what she’d done last night at the club. She’d fought off the asshole who’d grabbed her at the bar. The feel of his hands around her throat had forced her fear into overdrive. The knife had only been a few inches away, but still too far. Desperation had taken over as her power surged, calling the blade to her fingertips. Jamming it into his neck was as instinctive as breathing. Kill or be killed, she’d always choose the former. She’d run into the alley, refusing to discuss it with management. The only one who knew her was Avery and there was no way her friend would have divulged her identity to the vampire. She’d be more likely to turn him into a three horned sheep before she’d squeal. The only way the vampire could have found her would have been if he’d followed her home. A brush to her breast reminded her that she was still being held upright by him, and Laryssa felt her face grow red. Arousal licked over her skin. Cautiously, she rooted her shoes on the floor and turned around, steeling her nerves. “I’m so sorry,” she said.“My pleasure, mademoiselle, but I suggest you avoid heights in the future.”Surreptitiously, she stole a glance at him, which reminded her how incredibly handsome he was. His short dark hair was perfectly coiffed. His white dress shirt hung casually over the waistband of his jeans. Laryssa forced herself to look away, trying not to stare at the masculine features of his face. Straight nose, square jaw and perfectly kissable lips… lips that were smooth talking and way too articulate, teasing her with every word he spoke. Beads of sweat broke out across her forehead. It felt as if someone had turned up the heat, her skin was on fire. She noticed his eyes were no longer on hers and had dropped to her chest. They lingered only a second, and then he met her gaze and smiled. She looked downward and noticed that several buttons had come undone in her fall, revealing the edges of her white lace bra. Could this day get any more embarrassing? Laryssa’s fingers shook as she buttoned her sweater.“I’m so sorry. I just…you just…I just…” Great, first I’m a klutz and now I can’t speak. She bit her lip, paused and then took a deep breath before starting again. “Thank you for catching me.” “Again.” Léopold watched her as she adjusted her clothes, wishing to rip the rest of the pearly buttons from their fragile seams. But he refused to let the beast within take what it wanted. No, he’d find out what the hell she was before showing her his true nature. “Yes, thank you…again.” She smoothed down her skirt, trying to pretend she hadn’t just fallen into his arms and let him feel her up in the process. Business, think business. Her pulse slowed and she willed herself to appear nonchalant.“We met last night, remember?” he pressed. Léopold smiled and ran his hand over the colorful marquetry in rosewood that scrolled through a seventeenth century secretaire. Interesting that she could deliberately control the flow of her blood. It further piqued his concern about her species. What was she?Laryssa’s eyes met his, widening at the confirmation that he knew exactly who she was.“Yes, yes I do. But I’m afraid I didn’t catch your name.” Vampire. Big bad vampire. Laryssa watched intently as he fingered the furniture, trailing his thumb over the symmetrical scenes as if he was caressing a lover. “Lovely.” Léopold flashed his eyes to hers. “What?” Laryssa realized that he was toying with her, purposefully trying to make her nervous.“I said, it’s lovely. The neoclassical architectural structures. The white marble top. Doré bronze mounts.”“Is there something specific I can help you with?”“You get directly to the point?” Léopold had intended to play with her a bit, throw her off her game. Yet his little rabbit wasn’t frozen in the field like he’d anticipated. No, she rebounded nicely, and now stood confidently like a wildcat, poised to attack. “I don’t really have time to waste. So yeah, I’d like to know why you followed me from the club. And I really want to know what you are doing in my shop.” Léopold merely laughed and crossed the room to admire a chair and matching settee. “Circa 1775?”Laryssa walked over and placed her hand on the elegant Louis XVI chair. “Yes. How did you know? It’s a very special piece. It has the mark of Versailles Palace on it.”“Indeed.” Léopold sat in the chair, wrapping his fingers around its arms. “Nothing but the best. Fit for a king.”“And I suspect you’d like being a king.” She put her hands on her hips, waiting for him to respond.“Ah, a king I never was. But I’ve dined with kings, and I can assure you that while they enjoy the extravagances of the rich, they often lose their heads. Easy come, easy go.”“Why are you here?” Laryssa brushed her hair back, attempting to regain her composure. “Are you looking for something specific?”“Oui, pet. But not an antique. While I do enjoy shopping, this is hardly the time.” Léopold lost the smile, allowing his eyes to pierce hers. “So I shall get to the point. What are you?”Laryssa lost her ability to rein in her pulse and her heart began to fiercely pump hot blood through her veins. Her lips tightened, and she clenched her jaw. How dare he ask about her? What the hell did he want from her anyway? Dear God, she had enough issues with the darkness on her tail and now he was asking about her origins.“What do you mean, ‘what am I?’ I’m the owner of this store. Does that answer your question?” Laryssa asked, her voice growing louder. “Who are you?”
“Léopold Devereoux. That’s who I am. I can be your angel or nightmare, depending on the day. So listen up. What. Are. You?” Léopold didn’t make a move. He sat completely still, anticipating her answer.

Guest Blog and Giveaway with ML Guida

I’d like to thank Fang-tastic Blog for hosting me. Dark Promise is the first book in the Underworld and it’s about a dragon demon prince desperate to save his world, desperate enough to kidnap a psychic with the power to restore his people.
I got the idea to write this story after seeing a huge sink hole in South America on the internet and I thought what if something crawled out. In this case, it was a dragon demon from the Underworld.
Below is an excerpt from the first few pages of Dark Promise:
Kill. Kill. Kill.
The command thumped between his temples, urging him to hurt someone, anyone. Dragon fire burned in his chest and he forced the darkness back. It wouldn’t devour him like it had his father.
The Golden Tree’s Song of Tranquility, nearly inaudible now, calmed his raging dragon fire, bringing it back under control, luring it back to sleep. But when would it awake?
Someone clasped his arm. A dark figure stood next to him. The Wraith. He’d never seen her face, only her glowing red eyes staring at him from beneath her hood.
“The Darkness is beginning to take hold of you, young prince,” the Wraith rasped. “Only a few leaves remain on the Golden Tree. You don’t have time to squander.”
“I know,” he snapped. Darkness was consuming his people, strangling the tree. It was her damn fault. She refused to open the portal until the time was right, but accusing the Wraith would end up with his ass in a grave. “On the Eve of the Equinox, during the year of her twenty-first year, the silver haired human, tainted with angel blood, who is mated to the last Lord of the House Wyvern, and has looked upon the Wraith and the Undead unchanged, will breathe upon the Golden Tree and return the Light to the people.” The Wraith tilted her head toward Castle Basilisk, his father’s palace. “By royal decree, your father has ordered any Dragon Demon, who has not yet turned feral be taken to the Chamber to await Gryffin the Torturer. The poor souls imprisoned inside are counting on you to liberate them.”
“No pressure there.” Eric vowed not to become a rabid demon, but each day, the fight became harder. Without the Song of Tranquility, his people had turned feral, fighting each other, tormenting each other, killing each other.
“You must find Cassandra Wright and bring her back here,” the Wraith said.
He kicked a rock, shaving off the weeds near the dying tree. “Cassandra doesn’t know anything about me or the Underworld. If you would have let me visit her, just once, we wouldn’t be in such dire need.”“She wasn’t ready for you yet.”
He shoved his hands into his coat pockets to keep from wringing her neck. “She is now?”
“Of course. The prophecy is already in motion. Her abilities have grown.”
He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. He was sick of hearing about how Cassandra could tolerate the Wraith, but not him. Christ, he might as well be a bloody leper. “Because she can tolerate seeing you?”
“And see the Undead.”
But the Wraith’s orders hadn’t stopped him from visiting Cassandra in her dreams for the past three years. Each time, he seduced her, kissing, licking and tasting her, thrusting in time to her soft whimpers as he thrust deep inside her. He never told her his name, always shrouding himself with mystery, hoping to stoke her desire for him and only him. Now, would be the real test. He wanted to feel her skin, taste her lips, bask in her smile rather than her image. “I won’t fail.”
“You’ll not be able to use any magic up in her world.”
“What?”
“Since it is slowly dying, the Golden Tree’s magic will not run through you up in her world.”
“So, exactly how am I supposed to get her to come with me?” The dragon fire flared, demanding he attack the Wraith, a stupid Neanderthal move, which would end with the Wraith turning him into dragon dust. Not wanting to become like his father, he took a deep breath and concentrated on the Song of the Tranquility until he controlled his anger.
“Woo her, Prince, woo her.” She laughed. She laughed more like the wind whistling through a tree.
“Woo her?” How the hell was he supposed to woo her? He was a Prince for God’s sake. Dragon Demon women fell at his feet, begging him to take them, vying to be the next Princess.
The Wraith stretched out a twisted hand and in her palm, lay a black wallet. “You’ll need this where you are going, Prince. You’ll need to buy clothes and ski attire.”
He opened the wallet. A credit card, a license and stack of hundred dollars bills were tucked neatly inside. He stuffed it into his back pocket. “So, I will not have any magic?”“Some, but it will fade fast. Use it wisely, Prince.”
Poor Eric! He’s got to navigate through a world without magic and convince Cassandra that the man she’s been dreaming about does exist, but he’s not a man, he’s a demon. This is a fast novella and I hope you like it.

Excerpt:
Rowan comes back to the present and quickly pulls her hand away, eyeing the new girl, who smiles wickedly at her. She looks at her friends to see if they noticed anything, but they are absorbed in a conversation and unaware of Rowan and Amber’s interaction. Thankfully, whatever just happened between them was obviously not big enough to garner attention. Rowan wonders if Amber even knows what happened or if she just thinks she won the social competition between them, which is a total laugh, Rowan thinks to herself. Rowan glares at the new girl, looks her up and down one more time and walks away. She searches the crowd for Chloe and Cian and finds them standing close together, whispering to one another. She makes her way over to them and is not at all surprised when they don’t even notice her. She clears her throat and they separate just enough to let her into their space. “Hey, Rowan,” Chloe says, smiling when she sees her sister. The smile quickly fades when she sees the look on her sister’s face. “I need to ask you guys about what happens when you have a vision, because I think another one of my abilities just manifested.”Cian and Chloe pull Rowan away from the crowd and over to the dark side of the house. “What happened, Rowan? Did you just have a vision?” Chloe asks.“I was just talking to the new girl – have you been lucky enough to meet that one?” Rowan asks, rolling her eyes. When both Cian and Chloe shake their heads, Rowan continues, describing what happened. “As soon as I touched her hand, I went into the vision. And it just so happened to be a vision of the night we killed Selene,” Rowan finishes in an angry whisper. “Whoa, Rowan! Our visions don’t work that way. Our visions take us into the future, never into the past,” Cian says, looking to Chloe who nods her head in agreement.“Well, this is just great!” Rowan exclaims, exasperated. “I wonder what the hell this means.”“What what means?” Xavier asks, stepping around the corner, startling Chloe, Cian, and Rowan.“God! You scared the shit out of us, Xavier!” Rowan says, breathless. “Couldn’t you have at least warned us you were there? And stop lurking, already, and get over here.”“And where would be the fun in that?” Xavier replies, stepping out from the dark corner. He can’t help but think about how much he loves how quick Rowan is to anger. He’d much rather see this temper and attitude on her than see the sad girl who felt left out when everyone else’s abilities were manifesting and hers weren’t. This Rowan is strong, confident, and sexy as hell.“You won’t love my attitude when I start swinging, Jet,” Rowan replies, returning to the nickname she gave to him the day they met. When he first moved to town, he started calling her ‘Red’ because of her auburn hair. She immediately nixed it, but he didn’t seem to mind that she never dropped her nickname of ‘Jet’ for him, referring to his black hair and black eyes. “Rowan? You just responded to my thought… when did that ability manifest?” Xavier asks, clearly surprised and wary about how much she “heard.”“Strong, confident, and sexy as hell,” Rowan whispers in his ear, nipping at his earlobe. “Enough, you guys,” Cian interrupts, knowing that Rowan is only playing games with Xavier while Xavier’s feelings are genuine. “So… two new abilities manifested tonight? Is that right?” Cian asks Rowan.Rowan nods her head and looks around at the confusion on everyone’s faces. “Maybe it’s just because we’ve all been spending so much time together?” she asks hopefully.Chloe looks at her sister skeptically, “Why would two of your abilities manifest so suddenly?”“Maybe it’s the new girl,” Rowan answers, only half joking. “What new girl?” Xavier asks, realizing he missed more of the conversation than he thought.“The tall, curvy blond… Amber. She said she’s new to Spring Hill,” Rowan says, looking around the corner at the party going on in the front yard. She immediately spots her friends, but doesn’t see the blond anywhere. “That’s weird. She’s been with my friends all night, but now I don’t see her anywhere.” Cian, Chloe, and Xavier look out, scanning the crowd for an unfamiliar face. After a moment, they all agree that everyone at the party is someone they recognize. “Just be careful, Rowan,” Chloe warns. “Something doesn’t feel right about this. I don’t know what it is, but we can’t deny that you slipped into the vision after shaking that girl’s hand. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but just be cautious around her until we know more about her.”“Let’s go back and look around,” Cian suggests. “Maybe she’s in the house or in the side yard.” Although he agrees that something isn’t right about what happened, he feels adrenaline coursing through his veins. He can’t deny that he is excited about meeting the new girl.Rowan looks over at Cian and realizes he doesn’t know that she just heard his thoughts and felt his excitement about meeting Amber. Dream Cast for The Traveler by Melissa Delport

In a perfect world, authors would choose the casting of their books
DEX: Ian Somerhalder

Why, you ask? I say: WHY NOT? How did this man not land the role of Christian Grey? Ian is dark, brooding and plays a perfect bad-boy. Now, the only problem is that Dex is very tall, but if you can recall, Jacob Black in New Moon was well over 6 feet. Taylor Lautner is only 5ft7, and yet, I didn’t hear anyone complaining. I certainly wasn’t, when he took off that shirt! *sigh* Throw is a pair of green contacts, and some built-up shoes, and we have the perfect Dex.
RACHEL: Julianne Hough

Emmy has a sweet, innocent vibe that suits “scaredy-Kate” perfectly. Kate’s character develops throughout the book, and she certainly comes out of her shell, but she is always the timid girl that brings out the protective instincts of all the other characters. Who wouldn’t want to protect Emmy – just look at that face!
So, that is my dream cast for The Traveler. What do you think? I’d love to hear your ideas!
Much LoveMelissa

Wife, mother of 3, businesswoman by day and author by night, Melissa Delport is the author of The Legacy Series and Rainfall. She graduated from the University of South Africa with a Bachelors Degree in English in 2000. She currently lives with her husband and three children in Hillcrest, South Africa.
Her first novel, The Legacy, published in 2013, is the first in The Legacy Series trilogy, and is followed by the sequel The Legion. The final book, The Legend is due out in 2014. She has also written an independent novel entitled Rainfall, a psychological romance, and a science-fiction, action-adventure called The Traveler.
An avid reader herself, Melissa finally decided to stop “watching from the sidelines” and to do what is her passion.
“I was driving home from work when inspiration struck, and a storyline started unravelling in my head. For a few days, it was all I could think about and eventually I realised that the only way to get it out of my head, was to put it all down on paper. I started writing, and that was that.”

Interview and Giveaway Euphoria-Z Book 1 by Luke Ahearn

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I was born and raised in New Orleans, LA and moved to Monterey, CA about twelve years ago. I always wanted to be a writer, but spent the last thirty years avoiding that by developing computer games.
When I am writing this genre, I am obviously trying to convey the horrible reality of an actual post-apocalyptic world in the story; the fear, the challenges, the loneliness, and all that negative jazz. But honestly, especially as a reader, the post-apocalyptic genre appeals to my desire to be alone. I have a desire to wander free in a simple world where there are no politics, no wars, no rat race; just empty houses and large stores stuffed with everything I need to survive. And it also leaves me feeling grateful for the life I have, the family, the friends, and the small creature comforts.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
Imagination. All of these creatures allow my imagination to go wild. It’s like reliving a little bit of that magical time as a child when you could get scared.
What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve wanted to write a post-apocalyptic novel for a while, but this book was started when my son went off to college. It was a way to be with him (yes, in a kind of weird and imaginary way) because I knew I would miss him. It has helped me personally.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Euphoria-Z is a traditional zombie apocalypse novel with plot twists, well-developed characters, and a totally unique beginning.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
No. I use a common name for whatever period or region I am writing in. I spend very little time choosing a name. I usually go to Google and type in something like “most common boy names 1955” or whatever year the character was born, and then choose from the list. The reason I choose quickly is because I like to let the character own the name. Think of the common first name Michael. Now add the common surnames Myers, Corleone, or Scott. These three names evoke three very different images of a man created by the characters themselves.
In Euphoria-Z, Tug is the nickname that Abel Tugerson goes by. The nickname really says the most about him, evoking the image of a tugboat or a chronic masturbator who tugs a lot. I named him Abel Tugerson without thought and as his character evolved, the nickname emerged. I then rewrote the introduction of his character, introducing him as Tug from the beginning.
“Abel Tugerson, Tug to everyone and anyone since he could remember, stood in the bed of a beat-to-shit pickup truck as it rolled slowly down the 101. It was covered in rotten flesh and putrid streaks of gore.”
Of course, there are stories where name research and thought is required such as a sci-fi novel with an alien race or where the character’s name might be part of the fiction, but so far, I’ve just named my characters and moved on quickly.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
The main character, because I made the mistake of basing him on my son. I was subconsciously protecting him and was blind to it until the first beta reader sent her feedback. The initial chapters of the first draft were very boring and I completely deleted them. I reframed the character in my head and started from the beginning. The writing was much easier and went quickly once it was dealing with a fictional character and I was not putting my son in danger.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Probably Banjo. He was such an a-hole that there was never a dilemma of right or wrong, good or bad, he just did what he wanted with no remorse, no regrets, and no thought for anyone but himself. So, he was easy to write. He’s also many of the readers’ favorite character. He evoked a lot of reaction from them.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I let them develop. It sounds crazy, but the characters kind of live in my head and I just follow them around and take notes. I may know I want a bad guy and have a vague idea of what I want, but who shows up and what I learn about them as they proceed through the story is totally unknown to me at first. Banjo started as a label in my head; a racist/biker. As I wrote him, he took on thought and speech patterns, likes and dislikes, and I quickly developed a strong feeling of how he would handle any given situation. Would he let people live, kill them quickly, torture them, or maybe do something worse?
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
The very first scene. The lead character, Cooper, is being hunted in a primordial forest setting. The odds are eight to one, and he decides to take a stand against his pursuers. This scene sets the tone of the book – things aren’t always as they appear; sometimes they are worse even when things seemed bad to begin with.
I am worried that people will read the first few pages and assume the book will be like every other zombie novel, but it quickly and dramatically departs from the ex-military, armed-to-the-teeth, ass-kicker scenario. The first scene is also important because it helps the reader gauge the severity of change in the world and the characters and it also gives us an understanding of the lead characters’ weaknesses and strengths.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
A few things. In the book, the main character decides to go on foot across the Monterey Peninsula, avoiding streets and highways so he won’t run into the dead and the fleeing humans that attract them. I learned a lot I didn’t know about the geography and layout of the city. I needed to find out how high the hills are, how the sewers and storm drains are laid out, and how long it might take to make your way on foot from various points in town. But really what I learned was just how absolutely challenging and treacherous the terrain is around here. There are a lot of wooded areas and they are creepy if you are alone and thinking about zombies. I am afraid I didn’t convey that in the book. I had a bunch of stuff written that described it, but it made for boring reading, so I cut it.
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I’ve been to a lot of weird and interesting places. I seek out places and experiences that aren’t common for me. These can be things as simple as a bar room in the middle of the day or walking around a city at 3 AM or so. There is a huge difference between New Orleans, LA at 3 AM and Monterey, CA at 3 AM! I’ve stood around a trashcan fire listening to homeless people on many occasions, and walked through numerous abandoned places and through a few storm drains. Just this weekend, I went into several of the abandoned barracks on a closed military base in the area.
You may not think it, but walking into a dark storm sewer, even during the day, is scary. The most recent time I’ve done it, I used the light on my key fob to go in about thirty feet, then shut it off. It was very dark and eerie. I let my eyes adjust, though, and could see the faint glow of the next storm drain farther down. This may not be a big deal to many people, but the point is that for me it induced a strong sense of apprehension and discomfort. I also got to experience firsthand, even just a little taste, of being in a storm drain. It adds to you as a writer when you do this. I didn’t leave immediately, but remained and soaked in the nervous feeling, experienced it, and tried to put it into words. I noticed how I became comfortable after a while, my eyes adjusted, I noticed the smell more, I could see the odd mixture of the always-wet floor and the bone-dry upper half of the concrete pipe with dead dried vines coming in through the seams where the pipe sections fit together. You have to walk stooped, and that gets old quickly. You also have to walk on the edge of the water in the pipe or straddle it if you don’t want to get your feet wet. If you straighten up, you hit your head on the top of the pipe. Not only does that hurt, but there’s all kinds of crap in the dark that clings to the concrete and will get in your hair. I’m talking snails, spiders, roaches, and the like.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
I decided to base the fictional world on my hometown. That allowed me access to all the locations in the book. It’s fun to drive to a location and just take in the atmosphere and details. The difference from our normal world would be hordes of zombies.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
Euphoria-Z is the first of a planned series of at least three books. I recommend that they all be read and in order.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
All of them. In order to write a wide range of characters from good to evil, it is necessary to make decisions in the fiction as the character would. Characters are going to do and say things the author would never dream of. But, even the vilest act has a basis in common emotions we can all understand, the roots of which are love and fear. A racist who expresses intense hate is actually intensely afraid of the race they profess to hate. Their fear is great enough that they want to terrorize and scare those who scare them. It’s the fight-or-flight mechanism at work. They are no more than a scared, cornered animal that only has three choices: submit, run away, or attack. I can understand that level of fear and apply it to the mind of a character. The trick is to write the character acting on their fear in a way true to the character and not how you might act on that same fear. I try to stay true to my characters. If they are a racist, they are not going to change or soften that belief without good reason. I’ve read a few too many books where a character “didn’t know why he did it, but he let him go.” I call BS on that! If a writer wrote himself into a corner then he should change the world, change the events, but don’t make a character do something out of character.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
No, and I wrote a posting on my Goodreads blog on how I don’t buy into writer’s block. I really take issue with a lot of what is being taught about writing. Commonly accepted opinions about submitting, competition, rejection (so-called), and writer’s block, among many others are a horrible disservice to aspiring writers.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
No, not really.
Do you write in different genres?
Yes.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
No, a genre switch is fun and makes writing fresh. If I wrote the same genre all the time, I would get bored. Switching genres allows me to explore totally different characters, dialogue, settings, etc.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
Not until recently. I’d been published for well over ten years, but for some reason, never considered myself a writer. I started to question this and realized my definition of a writer was wrong. I read somewhere a long time ago that if you are writing, you are a writer; when you stop writing, you are not. I just accepted that I am writer because I decided to consider myself one. Being a writer is a call no one can make but the individual.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I record several shows and binge watch them. I love skipping commercials and not having to wait a week or more for the next installment. I feel guilty spending the better part of a day watching TV once in a while, but I also feel that I am taking less time out of my life to watch this way. I feel guilty because TV is mostly a distraction. It is hardly an inspiration but I think I need the time to kind of shut off my brain and watch the screen.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I love physical art. I am an accomplished computer artist, but find the creation of life-sized props much more fulfilling. I’ve built several life-sized pirate skeletons that are very detailed with hats, clothes, jewelry, weapons, etc. I’ve also done a few zombies and other assorted objects for plays and retail locations. You can see examples on my website.
What was the last amazing book you read?
Amazing? Probably a Jeffrey Deaver novel, and I haven’t read one in years. He’s the only author I can remember in the last twenty years to have spun my head around with the twists in his book. His plot twists are never outlandish or forced, but they are unforeseen (at least by me) and kind of blow me away. He’s also really good at introducing a ton of information on a specific topic to the reader without leaving them confused or feeling like he took an info-dump on their heads.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
My bed at night or on a rainy day.
What can readers expect next from you?
I have the next book in the Euphoria-Z series roughed out, and a sword and sorcery novel, the first of a series entitled Dark Deeds and Black Magics. The Prequel entitled Origins is already available. I am working on a thriller I hope to have done by October 2014.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
The present, Monterey, California
“Fuck!” The wiry, gray-haired old man felt his eyes go wide with surprise, but he quickly got his shit together. Jasper scowled; now he was very pissed off. He might stoop and shuffle when he walked, but he didn’t take any shit. Some big fat bastard was bear-hugging him from behind. He could see white mountains of wet flab before his eyes, and he smelled vomit. He felt a massive wet belly and man tits pressing against his back. Large folds of cold wet flesh engulfed him, and he shuddered at the sensation. He hated hugs, especially from men, and hugs from big fat sweaty bastards were absolutely unacceptable. He carried his best spiked hammer, an old-school Craftsman from back in the day, before the gooks were making them. He was just itching to use it. The fat bastard was yelling something in his ear. “I love you! I love you, man!” “Ahhh, geez!” Jasper twisted out of the flabby cocoon and took a few steps back. What he saw disgusted him. It was a giant fat kid, a head taller than himself, who looked like a giant baby, all hairless and soft. The kid was smiling like an idiot, and that made Jasper even more pissed off. Food smeared the kid’s face and ran down his chins in greasy streams between his man tits and over his belly. All Jasper could think was that all that shit was all over his back. Now he would have to burn his shirt and take a long, hot shower. The kid wore nothing but baggy white underwear soaked in sweat. Jasper shuddered at the clammy coldness on his back. His flannel shirt clung to him and felt like a cold, wet bathing suit.“I love you, man!” The big fat kid smiled as he came at him for another hug.“Ahhhh! Fuck you!” Despite his advanced age, Jasper moved with an efficiency and force that spoke of his many years as a carpenter. He brought the spiked hammer down on the kid’s skull, and it collapsed inward with little resistance. He liked the sensation of cracking a head but hated wasting the time to do it. The kid dropped to the concrete like a wet sack. He was still smiling, which made cracking his skull less enjoyable. Jasper wished he could bash every asshole around with his trusty hammer. He looked around to make sure another shithead wasn’t looking for a hug. A woman came at him, hooting so loud he could hear it over the crowd, waving her tits at him. He took her out too, with an easy smack between the eyes. He had enough of this shit. He cracked a few more skulls for fun, but he got bored. It was always the same: an easy tap to the skull and the moron dropped, still smiling. The streets were crammed with people, and they were all acting crazy. Jasper just wanted to get home. It seemed everyone was congregating downtown, streaming in from the surrounding neighborhoods. People were walking in large groups, arm in arm, naked and clothed, dancing, running, and hugging. It all made Jasper sick, just god-awful sick. He tried to go all the way downtown and almost got caught up in the crowd. People were pushing and jamming each other into doors until they cracked open. He heard the crash of large plate-glass windows, but no one reacted. In fact, he saw people just getting pushed through the windows in a wave. He could tell that people were getting seriously injured and killed, and he just wanted to get the hell out of there. He left at the right time. The press of the massive crowd smashed and suffocated, ground and trampled, and killed many—and the party continued to grow. No one screamed in panic or pain. No one yelled for help or dialed 911. And no one stopped to offer assistance, an apology, or true human interaction of any kind. Everyone was bent on doing exactly what they wanted to do, and what anyone else wanted didn’t matter to them in the slightest. In any place where people gathered for a good time, the crowds were thick. The mall was packed, but the hospital was empty. The wharf was so full that hundreds fell into the icy waters of the bay. The office parks and businesses were dark and silent. Some groups formed parties on random streets for one reason or another. A large majority of the city was empty, devoid of people. Most left their homes and walked away, leaving doors unlocked and often wide open. They would join a group and wander away. There were still a few souls hiding indoors who were anything but euphoric. They watched with fear and horror the goings-on outside their windows. Jasper had been one of these, but he needed his goddamned pills and had to drive through all this crazy shit to get them. Of course, when he got to the damn pharmacy it was closed. He had tried to call ahead, but no one answered the phone. He was pissed. He wanted nothing to do with this crazy shit. He didn’t want to see any of it and certainly didn’t want to walk through it. He saw quite a few people doing things he had only seen in his buddies’ dirty magazines. But there was one thing every single person was doing: smiling like a retard with a lollipop—every single one. At first, he thought all the outlandish behavior was confined to idiots, kids, and queers. It had to be some new drug to get them this nuts, he thought. But too many people were acting bonkers, too many people who just didn’t fit the behavior. He walked as quickly as he was able away from the crowd and back to his car. He’d seen some shit in his day, but in the last few the world had descended into pandemonium. There were reports that almost everyone around the world was walking away from their jobs, no matter how critical. Everything was grinding to a halt. Transportation, communication—private or military, trivial or critical—everything was just going belly up. Jasper had known this day was coming ever since the blacks were allowed to vote. And the crooks in Washington didn’t know anything. They said it was an unknown virus and creatively named it Euphoria-Z. Z because they didn’t know what it was, only what it did. And their advice? Stay indoors and away from crowds, bunch of geniuses.
Jasper had never expected he would need to kill people, not since the war, but in the last few days he had been forced to. The streets were crazy, and he wouldn’t even be outside if he hadn’t needed his pills. He felt as if he were the only sane person for miles. He looked at his feet and wondered, only briefly, if something were wrong with him? No, couldn’t be, he thought. None of this was right. The world had gone crazy.

Maybe here, anonymous unless she chooses otherwise, she can become someone new. Top acquisitions officer and international playboy Tony Carmine is about to close the biggest deal of his career. But then he meets Heather at a speed dating event . . . and discovers losing control may be exactly what he needs. Her blossoming sensuality occupies his every thought, consuming him with the need to possess the most intriguing lover he's ever encountered-until he walks into the boardroom and sees Heather on the other side of the negotiating table.
Excerpt:
The door creaks open and Tony steps out. You can do this, Heather. Take command. Tell him what you want. Tell him what to do, just like he said he wants. Now or never.
I smirk with a confidence I’m not completely feeling. “Nice of you to join me, Tony.” I relax against the brick and check him over from head to foot, making sure he knows with just my eyes exactly how desirable I find him. You can do this, don’t panic. He won’t laugh at you.
I nod toward the stacked chairs. “Take off your coat.” He slips the expensive garment from his shoulders, pulling the starched fabric of his shirt across his defined chest. I nod my approval and his eyes glint with desire in the dimming light.
He smiles, seemingly eager to play whatever game I’ve got in mind. “Anything else?”
I push down my inner anxiety and grin, in what I hope is a teasing manner. “Your tie.”
His eyebrows shoot up, but he loosens the knot and pulls the material free. The red silk slides over his shirt, and then is tossed carelessly toward his coat.
Holy crap, he’s doing it. He’s listening to me. What now?
“Unbutton the top two buttons of your shirt.” The command springs unbidden to my thoughts.
He complies and reveals the golden skin below his throat, with a few stray chest hairs visible near the neck of his undershirt. He looks so good I’d like to grab his shirt and rip it open, licking the skin as it’s uncovered.
Holy cow, where did that come from? I’m not this aggressive woman I’m pretending to be.
“How’s that?” he asks.
My pulse pounds so loudly in my ears I can only nod, afraid I’ll give too much away if I answer. I clear my throat, reaching for nonchalance. “It’ll do.” My hands slide to my hips and I take the plunge, pouring every ounce of courage I possess into my next actions.
I grab my skirt’s black material and work it slowly up my thighs. Tony’s eyes grow round as he follows my movements.
“Get down on your knees,” I say, forcing out my voice in a firm tone.

Excerpt: Chapter 1Storm of the Century
It was 1981, and a year since James Greene’s deal with The Gentleman. Days ago, he’d fled from the terrors in South Carolina for the Florida Keys. He intended to reach the Keys before the sun rose, but the storm that put cannon-sized dents into his truck in the wee hours of the morning spoiled his plan. Worst of all, the feeling of someone watching and following him had heightened after he’d entered Florida. When the droplets of rain became tiny atom bombs exploding on the windshield, he’d swerved around potholes and driven slower than the speed limit to avoid driving his 1959 pickup into a muddy quicksand. The condensation on the windshield formed faster than his wipers could clear it off. As the rain fell harder, gallons of it flooded the inside of his truck by way of the rolled down window on the passenger’s side.“Damn it! I had only one hundred miles left.” He slammed his fist into the steering wheel. The impact left knuckle marks in the plastic and bent the frame. After taking a deep breath and a swig of rum, he looked on either side of the road for a place to hole-up until the storm died.Only dreary trees lined the sides of the road. Then, finally, a sign for The Hotel Love Nest blinked on and off beside the road as he drove past. James mashed the brakes to the floor, turned his truck around, and drove back in the direction of the hotel. His bag splashed onto his floorboard, into the swimming pool that grew with each passing minute. As his tires screeched, they pushed slushy mud up and sprayed rocks in every direction. He parked his truck, more crooked than usual, in front of a rundown hotel. It had all the makings of a bad-side-of-town look. As the rain increased its frenzy and cascaded harder from sky, he rolled the passenger window up to prevent more from pouring inside.“Okay, one, two, three!”On three, he opened his door and battered through the storm, until his boots landed in a large puddle outside the main office. He ignored it and continued toward the door. The rain confused his sense of perception, and he overshot the distance to the handle, causing him to open the door with his shoulder, shoving his way inside where he collapsed onto the floor.Once the door shut, reducing the sounds of the raging thunderstorm, he stood and wiped the rain from his face. With clearer vision, he saw a man with stringy hair, coke-bottle glasses, and greasy clothes sitting dangerously close to a black and white TV behind the desk.“Hey,” James said and waved his hand to the guy.The man paid him no mind and watched a woman on the tube scream as a monster slashed her throat.James moved his hand to his side with stealth and unsheathed his knife.“No,” he whispered, squeezed his eyes shut, shook his head, and snapped closed the button to the knife’s casing. “Hey buddy, I need a fuckin’ room.” James smashed his hand on the bell that sat on the desk. The man moved around to face him. “Ten dollars.” He turned back to the TV.James ripped out his wallet and put the soggy bills on the counter. After the man had removed the key from the wall, he slid it over to James. “Room four,” he said while gawking at the TV where a townsman was dragging the monster from its hole. He stuffed more donuts into his cavity-corroded mouth.“Thanks,” James said and ran back to his truck for his soaked bag.The rain pelted his skin; the gusts slapping his face and slowing him to a fast walk. Because of the hurricane force winds, the truck’s door weighed a thousand pounds, and he had to dig his feet into the mud to yank it open. After removing his bag and shotgun, he hustled to the sidewalk, but not before grabbing the two sets of dog tags that hung around the rearview mirror. As he stepped onto the sidewalk, the hotel roof finally provided relief from the storm. He reached into his pocket for the key and accidently snagged a drenched flyer with a fisherman on the front along with it. The wind tossed the paper in the air, and he captured it before it disappeared into the downpour. He held it to the moonlight, scanning it before returning it to his soaked pants.“Soon, I’ll be James, the fisherman. Just one night and that’s it.” He strolled to room number four and paused before entering. “Something doesn’t feel right.”The wind swirled, pulling him back toward the rain. He forced his feet forward and focused on the lock. The sounds of the hotel building settling resembled the hair-raising screams from a serial killer’s basement. Something, he was sure of it, called his name.“It’s not real.” He stabbed the key into the lock. A swift jerk and shake of the door caused the room number to fling free of the bent nails that held it up as the door swung open. Without looking back, he darted into the dark room and closing the door, leaned his back against the door as it closed out the howls of Hurricane Nightmare. Rain dripped off his wet body and streaked down the doorframe.“Okay, I made it. It’ll take him a while to catch me now.” After standing up from the ground, he turned on the lights and marveled at the disaster of a room. The walls resembled the pocked surface of the dark side of the moon. The bathroom, covered in mildew and mold, had no door. Cracks similar to the ones in the Sahara desert appeared on the ceiling, and cancerous black spots filled the corner. The only positives were a bed, a desk and chair, and a TV.“This is the worst of the worst. No wonder it was ten dollars.”Not wasting a minute, he dropped his duffle bag on the floor and unzipped it. After pulling out a velvet pouch, he spread soot at the inside of the door. The smell of burnt leather drifted up to his nose, and a small haze rose from the material. He burned sage in the window seals and set fire to a hard material that he laid in the middle of the room. As the hard substance burned, a smell worse than the room lingered. But once it evaporated, the muggy smell of a dead man’s anus withered away. Now to get out of these. He wiped away some of the water from his face as he reached down, unlaced his boots, removed his wet socks, peeled off his shirt and pants, and tossed them onto the ground. From his bag, he retrieved a dry pair of socks and pants and put them on.After unsheathing his knife, he felt the groves and tic marks engraved along the handle and placed it on the table. There were thirty-four marks etched in the wooden handle. When he’d finished, he rested his short-barreled shotgun against the table where he relaxed and pulled out his Florida State game-winning baseball from college. He tossed the ball into the air, launching it higher and higher. It hit the ceiling and pieces of plaster fell on his head.“Fuck!”Once he stood, he brushed the fragments from his matted hair and shoulders onto the stained carpet and stopped the baseball from rolling under the bed with his foot. The ball still had pieces of plaster on it, and he brushed them off then tossed it into his bag. His bag contained another treasure of his—rum. He removed a new bottle and uncapped it, sucking down the spicy juice through his dehydrated lips.“Huh.” He wiped what spilled off his face and recapped the bottle.Sitting at the table, he flattened the torn flyer and spread it across the broken and splintered top. While shutting his eyes, he pictured the sea, the way it smelled, and the way it felt against his skin. The whales collided with the boat, and he heaved and hoed with the dozen or so other men that worked along with him on the large vessel. The ropes burned his hands and blood mixed with the salty water. No one knew if they’d die by the whale’s hand or the storm. Nevertheless, that was all right by him. There was no one around hounding and harassing him, taking away his sleep and ability to think. No one threatening his life, family, or conscience. It was him and the sea. James and his thoughts.“I can’t wait.” He smiled and interlaced his fingers behind his head.A violent bang at the door erased the peaceful vision. James fell from his seat onto the floor, whacking his head along the way. When he rose, he dashed to the light switch and flicked it off.The thing outside beat and hammered on the door. With his back pressed against the wall and breathing as little as possible, he shook each time the door thumped. Sweat raced down his chest and forehead. His nostrils flared as lilac seeped into the room, and he resisted the urge to gag.“No,” he whispered. The thing scratched and chattered on the other side of the door, and multiple voices talked simultaneously. It raged and laughed, and the windows vibrated; little cracks spread across the glass.James squeezed his eyes shut and prayed to God, any God that happened to hear him. He prayed until his mouth was too dry to open. Then he prayed in his head. The commotion ended, and the ominous presence left. He lifted his trembling hand to the newly cracked window, pushed the curtain away, and saw nothing. After turning on the lights, he sat at the edge of the bed with his head in his hands.“Only one more day. I’ve had one hundred fucking miles, and now this.” He drove his fist into the wall beside the bed. The pain caused him to wave his hand.“It’s one of the hallucinations. You haven’t slept in what, three days? It’s like the time in Macon.” He rubbed his head.A letter swished into his room from under the door and floated beside him onto the tattered covers. James leapt from it. His eyes widened at the sight of the handwriting.“It’s just paper,” he muttered. Mustering the courage, he seized the letter. It shook in his unsteady hands as he read the words.
I WANT MY SOUL, AND SINCE I’M SUCH A NICE GUY, I’LL GIVE YOU UNTIL DECEMBER 22 AT 1:30 AM. I KNOW WHERE YOU’RE AT. NO NEED TO RUN, IT’LL ONLY MAKE THINGS WORSE. OH, AND CLEAN UP.FROM THE GENTLEMAN, WITH LOVE
James’ thoughts spun. He looked around the room for something, anything, to help him stand upright, but instead landed on the bed. The words raced through his mind, smashing the good memories aside.“I can’t leave?” He tugged at his hair and wiped the sweat from his face. What he’d spent the last several months planning was all for nothing. A deep emptiness filled his soul. Not even the burning of the rum could fill it. He curled into a ball and wept himself to sleep.
