Trust Your Instincts
Rowan Harper is nothing but a smart-mouthed bookstore clerk with a crappy love life on the night she walks into Rosie’s Bar. Most of the drama in her life is borrowed from her best friend’s adventures. But when she meets Gabriel—tall and movie star gorgeous—everything changes. Never mind that she turns down the drink he offers, or that he brims with secrets she can’t begin to guess at. He ignites a desire in her she never suspected—and shows a fascination with her she can’t explain.
He has no family, no job, no bank account; he knows where she lives and her favorite flower. An aura of mystery cloaks him, even as Rowan grasps for facts, even as she fears an answer that could destroy her happiness. Gabriel can guide her through a wonderland of new sensations. But only if Rowan trusts him enough to follow…

Excerpt:“I don’t want you to leave,” I told him, my voice a barely audible, husky whisper.                       The shadow in his eyes vanished, replaced by something else. Whether it was relief or hope, I couldn’t say.            “Are you sure?” he murmured, taking a step toward me. “I need you to be certain that this – that I – am what you want.”            I had the sense that he was asking me something that went deeper, was more meaningful, but my brain had been through enough for one night. My ability to search for hidden meanings was temporarily lost, and it was more than ready to hitch a ride to Clueless Land. I wasn’t sure about anything, but I trusted my instincts. And they told me this was right. I belonged with Gabriel.            “The only things you can be certain about are death and taxes,” I said, giving him a wry grin, “but if you’re asking me to take a chance, then yes, I will – only,” I paused, “why would you think I wouldn’t want you?” He might not be able to pick up on every emotion I was throwing his way, but surely he could still read how I felt about him?            “Because I wonder,” he said, taking my hand, “if you went back to the very beginning, would you have come searching for me again?”            The silence between us was deafening, and the feeling of déjà vu returned. Only it didn’t feel so strange this time. Whatever Gabriel was referring to was hidden somewhere inside that feeling.            “I wish I knew what you were talking about,” I told him, “because I think it’s important, but I have to tell you that right now you’re making absolutely no sense.” Clueless Land was rapidly expanding into the continent of the Completely Lost in the Dark.            “You need to know the truth about me, Rowan, what I am -”            “No, I don’t, not right now.” I held up my hand and stopped him. I was balanced on a razor-thin wire, and it took all I had not to fall off. “There’s only one issue that’s important right now, and I need you to be truthful with me.”            “Of course, ask me anything.”            “Wife, girlfriend, or significant other?”            The sudden, utter confusion on his face made me want to laugh aloud.              “I don’t understand.”            “Do you have one?”            Gabriel shook his head of glorious white hair. “No, of course not.”            “Positive?”He looked hurt that I was questioning his integrity. “Rowan, I’ve not wanted another woman since the first time I saw you. I never have.”            “That’s good to know,” I whispered.            He let go of my hand and clutched his forehead as though he’d just been afflicted with a brain freeze. Pursing his lips, he blew out a breath. For all intents and purposes, he looked like a man who desperately wanted to speak but was afraid his words would be the wrong ones.Welcome to the club.            I didn’t want to waste any more time in pointless conversation. It would be an exercise in futility that accomplished nothing. What was about to happen between us right here, right now, was not going to be achieved with words. Unless they were all single syllables used for instructional purposes along with some heavy-duty physical contact. My hands literally itched to get beneath his wet clothing and touch his body.            Something in my life, my luckless romantic aspirations, my failure to successfully seduce a man, had all been pushing me toward this moment. Gabriel was to be my first, perhaps my only lover. I don’t know how I knew this or what turn of fate’s cosmic wheel made it so, but it was true. I had known it eighty-seven nights ago on my front porch, and the conviction was even stronger now. I made it to the staircase before Gabriel’s voice stopped me.            “Give yourself to me, Rowan, and you will take no other.”            I don’t know if other girls have experienced such a declaration, but it didn’t surprise me coming from him. I was almost expecting it, even if I wasn’t completely sure I understood all the implications. Gabriel was telling me exactly what was going to happen. What his intentions were, just in case I hadn’t been paying attention.            I heard myself reply, saying the words that would change my life forever. I just had no idea to what extent.
“Then make me want no other.”
About the Author:
Carla Susan Smith owes her love of literature to her mother, who, after catching her pre-teen daughter reading by flashlight beneath the bed covers, calmly replaced the romance book she had “borrowed” with one that was far less risqué, and much more appropriate! Though she was encouraged to include different genres in her reading tastes, romance - paranormal romance in particular - has always been her first love.
Born and raised in England, she now calls South Carolina home, where she lives with her wonderfully supportive husband, awesome son, and a canine critique group (if tails aren’t wagging then the story isn’t working!) When not writing, she can usually be found in the kitchen trying out any recipe that calls for rhubarb, working on her latest tapestry project or playing catch-up with her reading list.

Guest Blog and Giveaway Poison on the Blood by Robyn Bachar

What should a mortal do when her soul mate is a vampire and she can’t become one?
Emily is faced with that question first in The Importance of Being Emily and then again in Poison in the Blood. (Both stories are included in the print edition of Poison in the Blood--it’s two books in one!) Emily is a seer, and though she loves her soul mate Michael, he is sworn to serve the Order of St. Jerome as an immortal chronicler. The Order doesn’t allow seers in its ranks, so Emily can’t join them. Her only other vampiric option is to become a master necromancer, and respectable magicians consider necromancers to be vicious, power-hungry monsters.
I make my vampires work for their immortality. It takes years of study, and half of the apprentices don’t survive the transformation. Emily is grateful when Michael survives the ritual, but heartbroken at the rift it creates between them. They’ll never grow old together—Michael will watch Emily and generations of their descendants age and die. But Emily is a fighter, and she’s never been a respectable magician. She’ll turn London’s magical society upside down and inside out to spend eternity with the man she loves.
I first introduced Emily and Michael (and Michael’s ill-tempered mentor Simon St. Jerome) in my modern Bad Witch books, but because they’re vampires I wanted to go back in time and show them causing mischief and mayhem in the past. The first two Emily books are set in Victorian England, and I have plans for Emily and Michael to fight supernatural crime in Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair and then later during the Prohibition era.
I love writing in the Bad Witch world, and these characters are my favorite. Poison in the Blood has magic, murder, mystery, matchmaking, and adorable plot moppets, and it was a fun story to write. I’m looking forward to starting the next one.

Book Description:
She is honey to his throat…but one sweet taste could part them forever…Banished from home while her husband adjusts to life as an immortal, blood-drinking chronicler, Emily Black is homesick, heartsick and struggling under the constant sensory barrage of a city drenched in ancient magic. When an old friend asks for her aid in solving a string of murders, she welcomes the distraction, despite the danger.
Justine Dubois is grateful for a seer’s help, and more understanding than anyone of Emily’s plight. As a guardian, Justine commands respect; as a woman, her magic is considered inferior. Together, they are determined to prove their worth to London’s magicians, starting with solving these murders—with maybe a bit of matchmaking on the side.
Long before he met his soul mate, Michael Black made a commitment to join the Order of St. Jerome. He will live forever, forced to watch the woman he loves age and die. As Emily hunts the murderer, Michael struggles to protect her. But if he loses control of his hunger, the greatest threat to her safety could be Michael himself.
Warning: Contains tortured soul mates, scheming faeries, vampire debauchery, deadly parasols, illicit blood-drinker relations, and adorable plot moppets.

Excerpt:

Normally stepping into a garden would soothe me, but we were still within London, where there was no comfort whatsoever. I looked up at the night sky and wished I were with Michael.

“You have the soul of an artist, Miss Rose. It is a rare gift.” Mr. Paris stroked my hand, and I tugged it free of his arm. I folded both hands before me primly and smiled.

“Again, that is very kind of you.”

“I consider myself a patron of the arts.”

“So you attend gatherings such as this often?” I asked.

“Of course. I am always on the lookout for new talent.”

“I see. Did you know Mrs. Harding?” I tried to examine his aura to determine his reaction, but his magic continued to be so overwhelming that my eyes watered. Mr. Paris must be unspeakably powerful, and I found myself both worried and intrigued. Perhaps he was a sorcerer? One who specialized in darkness?

“I did. Poor girl. What a terrible thing to have happened to her and her family… Tell me, are you working on a second collection of your work?” he asked, quickly changing the subject.

“I am, though I am afraid the subject matter is quite a bit darker.”

Mr. Paris smiled a predatory grin, and my pulse leapt with a thrill of fear. “I am not afraid of the dark, Miss Rose. Are you?”

He stepped closer, but I held my ground, studying him with a curious tilt to my head. “What are you?” I asked.

He blinked, startled. “I beg your pardon?”

“What sort of magic do you practice?” I clarified.

“Oh. I am a librarian, of course,” he replied, and I laughed, unable to help myself. “What’s so funny?”

“You are most certainly not a librarian. Do people truly believe that lie?”

The smile slid from Mr. Paris’s face as his expression hardened. He stepped forward and tried to grab my arm, but Miss Dubois was suddenly between us, a shining silver blur. With a snarl he turned and ran, and the guardian chased him out of the garden and into the street.
Uncertain of what to do, I followed. I stood hesitant at the garden gate, wondering which way they went. My vision shifted, and I followed Miss Dubois’s blazing footsteps. I paused next to a blur traced over the high brick wall of another garden. It was another magical doorway, rather like the one I had discovered near Mrs. Harding’s body outside the Undiscovered Country. Foolishly I raised my hand to touch it, despite knowing full well that doing so could trigger another vision, but a hand emerged from the brick wall and grabbed my wrist.

Overwhelmed with shock, I barely managed a strangled gasp as Mr. Paris stepped through the wall and glared down at me. “Who are you?” he demanded.

“You first.” My voice trembled, and Mr. Paris grinned. He tightened his grip and snapped several small bones in my wrist, and I screamed.

“Who are you?” he repeated.

Something bubbled up within me, a bright plume of prophetic magic that became my answer. “I am your end.” That time my voice did not tremble at all, but was filled with terrible certainty. I would cause Mr. Paris’s death, and I knew it with as much confidence as I knew the sun would rise in the morning.

Something in my gaze must have worried him, because he snarled. Scowling, he grabbed my forearm with both hands and twisted. The bone snapped like dry kindling, and I screamed again. Before he could torment me further Miss Dubois arrived and bashed him with a round silver shield. Mr. Paris vanished into thin air, and the guardian stood near me. One arm bore the shield, while in her other hand she held a sword. How cunning of her. I wanted a sword as well.

“Are you all right?” she asked.

My knees wobbled and began to buckle, but then two dark blurs streaked up to us, and I was suddenly swept from my feet and cradled close in Michael’s arms.

“Darling! What happened?” he asked.

“You caught me.” I blinked—however had he moved that fast? Simon sighed and shook his head at his student, and I sensed that Michael and I were both in for a scolding.

“Of course I did. I will always catch you. Are you all right?”

Book Description:
What started out as a routine call led to so much more…
My name is Veronika Kane, and I’m the Captain of the Ghost Watch in the reborn city of Shadow Philadelphia. After we disposed of the city’s previous master and his minions, things were looking up, but in war things are never that easy. A routine call with Detective Frank Cooper blew the cover off of an elaborate scheme to plunge the city of brotherly love into chaos. When Necromancers, Were creatures, and the horrors of Chaos come together it can’t mean anything good.
With new and old enemies joining forces against us, I’m going to need all the help I can get. Lucky for me, my old friend Frank Cooper will be there to lend a hand, along with Brianna, a strong willed were-ferret, and the stormy eyed wizard Nathaniel Carter. I just hope it will be enough to save everyone.
This time, our enemies aren’t just attacking us in Limbo; this time, they are taking the battle to the streets of the living world and its unknowing citizens. If the Old Ones rise, I don’t think there will be anything anyone can do to stop them.

My name is Veronika Kane, and this war is far from over.

Wail of the Banshees is Robert's first novel; he has been a huge fan of fantasy and science fiction since second grade when he discovered The Hobbit.
Urban fantasy in particular has become Robert's favored genre in the past decade. Robert has been legally blind since infancy, but thanks to a mom that encouraged independence, hard work, and a healthy dose of dreaming, the disability has mostly just been an inconvenience.

Spotlight and Giveaway Angel Kin by Tricia Skinner

Genre: Paranormal Romance with Urban Fantasy elements
Publisher: Entangled Publishing – Edge Imprint
Date of Publication: April 28, 2014
ISBN-13: 9781622664931ASIN: B00JI09FIG
Number of pages: 268

Tagline: The thief will steal his heart...
Book Description:
While channeling Robin Hood’s “steal from the rich and give to the poor” attitude at a local politician’s house, ex-con Katie Logan witnesses a forced suicide. Dirty or not, supernatural or not, he didn’t deserve to die, especially not by his own hand. But with her record, stepping forward as a witness isn’t an option. On the run from the police and the murderer, she turns to The Bound Ones for help.
When a beautiful woman comes to The Bound Ones, half-angel assassin Cain is immediately drawn to her. But when she fingers him as the killer, he can come to only one conclusion. The twin he thought was dead is very much alive…and trying to send him a message. Unfortunately, that message is: “You’re next.”
It’s a race against time as Cain fights to save the woman he’s falling in love with before his brother Abel destroys them both.

Excerpt

First, Cain checked the room’s double window and the flimsy front door, then threw the motel blanket on the brown carpet. He smoothed his hands across the sheets and lifted the mattress. He let it go and unrolled his blanket, tucking the corners.

“Should be fine now.”

Her mind felt miles away. “Will it be? Fine?”

He removed his jacket and pulled one of his guns from the holster. The magazine shot into his hand before he slammed it back. “As soon as I find Abel your life will go back to normal.”
Katie huffed a half laugh. Normal sounded like a dream. “I—”

Cain paused his movements. “You what?”

“I wish I knew how to help you.”

“Well you can’t.”

She snapped her gaze to his stony face. “Would it hurt to pretend I just showed some compassion for you? You could at least act like you’d considered my words.”

“Let’s analyze your sweet wish, little burglar. I’m an assassin, which translates to I kill people.” The half angel folded his arms and left no doubt about the arrogance on his face.

“Sorry if the facts sting, but you can’t fight like I can. You can’t do what needs to be done.”

Infuriating, arrogant, and stubborn was not a good look on him. Katie mimicked his posture and crossed her arms. “Tell me, Mr. Super Assassin, are you sure those legendary fighting skills you claim to have will work when you’re face-to-face with Abel?”

“You think I’ll run from the fight?” A growl slipped through his gritted teeth.

“That’s not what I meant. I want to know if you can”— she raised her fingers in air quotes— “do what needs to be done, when your opponent is your own brother?”

Cain pressed his lips together, and she dove into the void left by his hesitation.

“Family is about love, but it’s also about a shitload of pain.” Katie expelled a slow breath.
“When you face off with your twin, the end result will stay with you.”

“Abel’s my blood, but he’s done wrong. I’ll deal.”

Katie tossed her hands up. “Say you’re standing near Abel and he’s got a gun pointed at some poor schmuck’s head. What are you going to do? You’d have to decide whether or not your brother is more important, or that innocent life.”

He clawed his fingers through his hair. “I’d never allow him to harm a soul in my presence. I will stop my brother, but don’t tell me my only option is to kill him.”

“I hope it doesn’t come to that.” Exhausted, she sank onto the edge of the mattress. “I truly do.”

“Ridiculous,” he muttered under his breath.

She shot up from the bed, ready to tell him exactly where he could shove his tough act, but Cain’s hand caught her wrist. They stared into each other’s eyes, but the emotions passing over his face cranked her heartbeat.

“Let. Go.” She jerked her arm, but his grip held.

“You should thank me for my honesty. An angel, even an impure abomination like me, could kill you before you could react. No more wishing you could help me. I don’t want to see you hurt.”

“So we’re clear, if I wasn’t dealing with mind-controlling giants, I could hold my own in a fight,” she said.

Cain’s expression darkened. “Could you? I wonder.”

The Nephilim brought her crashing down onto the mattress, and Katie yelped. She thrashed under his heavy weight.

“Overpowered by a body, not mind control,” he said as his breath fanned her skin. “Your nonassassin skills are sadly lacking.”

He pinned her wrists above her head, leaving her body flush against his. Katie wiggled and tugged, but Cain had the advantage of position and strength. She stopped her frantic movements. Only one option left—surprise.

She molded her lips over his, the pressure so heavy and intense she could only moan breathlessly into his mouth. The warmth of her tongue touched his, drawing her nerves guitar-string tight.

The grip on her wrists loosened, and Katie raised her hands until her fingers slid into the thickness of his hair. She arched her body and his wide palm cupped her back. Distracting Cain to throw him off took a back seat, replaced by instinctual need pounding deep within her belly and ricocheting between her legs.

Cain’s tongue continued a slow exploration of her mouth, lapping the depths, erotic as hell. Her trembling fingers brushed the expanse of his shoulders, his firm muscles jolting the tips as they passed over. Filled with untethered boldness, she ran light touches down the ridges of his firm pectorals. When her thumb flicked a pebble-hard nipple, her bodyguard growled.

Interview with Krissy Daniels

Hello Krissy, welcome to Fang-tastic Books. Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?

Hello! First of all, thank you so much for having me.

I’m a mom, wife, daydreamer and hopeless romantic. I write paranormal because I love to read paranormal. You can push boundaries in paranormal that you can’t with contemporary.

What inspired you to write this book?

Aflame started as a completely different book. It didn’t start as a paranormal. I’d read my first BDSM book. I loved the story but hated how it made me feel. So, I started writing an anti-BDSM book, to explore what would happen to a woman if she was trapped with a Dom who abused his position. From there, it morphed into something completely different.

Please tell us about your latest release.

Aflame is a spicy hot paranormal romance. The first in a series that follows the lives of a breed of warriors created by fallen angels. Grayce hates men, has a foul mouth to rival any trucker and a nuclear temper that’s more powerful than she could ever imagine. Zander has a heart of gold, muscles of steel and superhuman abilities. Together, their powers only get stronger. Thank goodness for that. Tyr, the violent psychopath who’d tortured Grayce for years, has come back to claim her. Grayce fights to free herself from the binds of her past. Zander fights to help Grayce control her rage before she destroys everyone and everything in her path. His true challenge, however, is to help her trust and love again.

Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?

Most of the time, the names just pop into my head. On occasion, I’ll research names to fit a character’s heritage.

Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?

It’s weird, but I have a harder time writing the female pov’s.

Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?

I love them all, but the baddies are so much fun to write. I like to go dark and usually have to tone them down through the revisions.

Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?

I do not have a formula. I just write and the characters develop on their own.

What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?

Oh my gosh, it’s hard to pick one scene. There’s a scene by the lake where Zander tries to gage how powerful Grayce is by making her angry. I had fun with that one.

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?

Aflame is the first in the Apotheosis series, so no, not yet.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?

I don’t necessarily call it writers block, but I do have periods where I get stuck. If that happens, I just pull up a different manuscript and work on another story. Sometimes, I’ll just get up and do dishes, laundry, or play with the dogs for a few minutes. On a few occasions, I simply type blah, blah, blah  on the page and skip to another scene until I’ve figured out how to fix my issue.

Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?

Not that I’m aware of LOL. I do take time to pray before I start writing everyday.

Do you write in different genres?

Yes! I’ve written an erotic romantic suspense that’s coming out this summer called How to Kill Your Boss.

Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?

No. I don’t find it difficult. Not yet anyway.

When did you consider yourself a writer?

I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember. I struggle with calling myself a writer.
When people ask me what I do, I tell them I’m a stay-home-mom, out of habit.

What are your guilty pleasures in life?

Smutty romance novels and smutty television. I like them dark, too. I’ve recently discovered Banshee on Cinemax. Holy Cow! Amish mafia? Does it get any better than that?

What was the last amazing book you read?

I just finished Mud Vein by Tarryn Fisher. I’m still processing…

Oh! Pam Godwin’s Deliver. That was so, so good!

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?

I love to read myself to sleep in bed!

What can readers expect next from you?

How to Kill Your Boss is coming out in July. Aglow, book two in the Apotheosis series is finished and in the revision stage.

Where can readers find you on the web?

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?

With bare hands splayed across the open wounds, Grayce squeezed her eyes closed and prayed for control. Begged. Pleaded to a God she’d never before acknowledged.

Chelsea needed time to get away.

Grayce prayed for Chelsea, prayed for Zander. Prayed they wouldn’t die because of her.
Her wits slipped away. Raw emotion drove her actions now. Blood covered her arms. Her lips throbbed with the remnants of his kiss. A kiss that felt like goodbye. He couldn’t die. The primal need to protect him overwhelmed her senses.

“Take me,” she implored. “Take me instead.”

Hell’s own fire coursed through her veins. Savage. Brutal. Pissed off.

She would’ve sold her soul at that moment to keep him alive. Zander didn’t deserve this. She did.

Earth and grass swirled and gyrated, turned to ash around her. Her small fingers stretched across his bloodied and shredded skin. Her insides boiled. Her skin bubbled and vibrated with indignant protest.

He said he loved her, now he was dying. Why? What kind of cruel, sadistic joke was this, anyway? Violent trembles overtook her as an earthquake made its way through her body from the inside out.

“I will not let you die.”

Tips for Novice Writers-The Deadly Seven by Kyoko M

Disclaimer: this post is tailored towards novice writers who intend to self-published.
First of all, congratulations on admitting that you’re a writer. It’s the first step down into the rabbit hole, and possibly one of the scariest. Well, don’t be shy—pull up a chair. We’ve got things to discuss, novice writer. Coffee? Good. Start drinking it now because, trust me, you’re gonna need it later.
It’s hard to find a place to start with tips for beginners in the writing field, but I guess the most important thing right off the bat is to advise you to ask yourself one question: “why do I write?” This question sounds simplistic enough at first, but in reality, it’s pretty loaded. Maybe your answer is simple—one sentence long, a couple words, whatever. And that’s fine. But if you’re like most writers, this question has a long answer.
Before you start this journey, you need to understand why. It’s the most significant thing related to writing that you will have to face, because if you can’t come up with a substantial answer that makes your stomach flop and your skin leak with sweat, then this might not be the career for you. Do you write because you love it? Do you write because stories are constantly gushing out of you in every waking second, and even keeping you up at night? Do you write because there are things in life that leave you unsatisfied and you want to create something for yourself? Do you write because you can’t find what you’re looking for and so you’ve decided to craft it on your own? If the answer is yes, proceed to the following tips. If not, take some time off, drink some tea, stare off into the sunset while blasting some Simple Plan, and come back to it.
Tip #1: Write. A lot. Constantly. Even when you’re tired and you don’t have enough time. Even when you’d rather sit in your underwear watching reruns of the X-Files on Netflix. Even when there’s a clearance sale on books at Barnes and Noble and you want to stuff your shelves to the gills. Write as much as you can whenever you can for as long as you can. Novice writers will hear this a lot without explanation, but I won’t leave you hanging because we’re bros.
The reason why you need to write like your life depends on it is because it does. The end game in this business for most writers is to become self-sustainable on your work. In order to do that, at least if you’re an unknown self-published writer, is in volume. In the traditional publishing world, it’s possible to write one masterpiece and be set for life. E.L. James didn’t have to write a trilogy for her godawful monstrosity 50 Shades of Grey if she didn’t want to because she was an unexplained overnight success. But, sad as it sounds, that is probably not going to happen to you. What you must do is survive off of multiple works because readers almost always tend to buy in bulk. There is an entire demographic that simply collects bargain books to read whenever they get around to it. If they like the cover, they buy it. If they like the blurb, they buy it. If it’s cheap and they like all of the above, they will not only buy that, but the next book in the series, and so forth.
Do you know what drives those sales even more? If you release more than one book per year. Any of the major fiction franchises you know typically put out a book a year, and that works because they always break records. Their name is already out there. Yours isn’t. So one way to get yourself on the map is to be consistent and frequent. Think about the last book you read that you loved. What if two of them came out in the same year? Would that not make you jump for joy? Readers will too, even if you’re still relatively unknown, so the more you write, the more you can publish; the more you publish, the greater likelihood that you’ll get noticed and sell books.
Tip #3: Edit your face off. I love writing. I hate editing. If editing had a face, I would punch it. But it’s 100% necessary if you don’t want to die penniless in a gutter. A lot of people put the emphasis only on writing your masterpiece, but no one writes a masterpiece right off the bat. You are going to find stuff in your work that sucks. Stuff that shouldn’t be there. Stuff that should be there that you forgot to include. Editing is what makes the difference between a decent writer and a great writer.
It is my personal recommendation to put your book in a drawer for a month and leave it there. Don’t touch it. You’ll get the urge, but ignore it. Go about your life doing other fun things. Throw yourself a party for finishing your book and get drunk and dance around with a lampshade on your head.
After a month, come back, print out your book, and sit down with a pen. Read slowly. Read it the first time for story; the second time for grammar; the third time for themes and motifs; the final time for continuity and character voice. You can honestly read it as many times as you want as long as you pour over that sucker until your eyes are crossed. Then find yourself a beta-reader or editor and send it to them. After it comes back, open the book again and fix it. Think of your book as a piece of gold that’s been buried underground for a century. No one’s going to care when it looks gross. Polish it until it’s so beautiful that people will trip over themselves trying to get it for themselves.
Tip #2: Get thee to KBoards’ Writer’s Cafe. If you have never heard of KBoards, then please look it up right now because it will literally save you about a year’s worth of headaches. I’m not kidding. I struggled for seven months selling only about 40 copies of my first novel until I found out about KBoards. I spent four months on KBoards, and now I’ve sold over 500 copies of my first novel, and over 400 copies of my short story collection. Yes, it is that important.
KBoards is basically just one massive forum of resources for self-published authors. Almost any question you can think of related to the marketing, writing, and publishing industries is buried somewhere in those threads. It’s completely free to sign up and I guarantee you will see results if you stick with it, ask questions, meet other writers, and stay updated on trends. It is bursting at the seams with useful tips and writers who just want to help each other. That is what is most worthwhile about KBoards. The sense of community is overwhelming. These writers are so kind and really excited to see each other succeed, and more than willing to help make it happen. I wouldn’t have gotten where I am without them, and so I think it is essential that you get started now before you even jump on the publishing bandwagon.
Tip #3: Make a business plan. Wait, don’t leave! I know that sounds like scary grown up jargon, but I can explain. Every great writer has a business plan, even if it’s not called that in their head. What I mean is write down your goals: short term, year-long, and long-term. Set a timeline for each one. The first thing that will happen after you finish your book is that you’ll start losing days off the calendar as you start the process of getting ready to publish. Most self-published authors have entire laundry lists of things to do before release date, and so will you. Therefore, you have to segment your workload in a sufficient manner to avoid being eaten by a grue.
Dig into your lint-encrusted pockets and find yourself a budget. Then spread those pennies out as effectively as you can. The good news is that social media has made it a lot easier to market your work. The bad news is, it’s still just free marketing and it cannot by definition get you everywhere. If that were true, we’d all be Richard Castle. But we’re not. So you have to know your limits, know what kind of advertising you can afford, and which ones are the most effective. Research, research, research. Go to free online podcasts and seminars and write down things that worked for authors in similar genres. Absorb all of this into your body like some crazed version of Clayface. Then things will go a little easier for you.
You’re still going to stumble and fall and skin your knees, but hopefully, some of these tips will make it hurt a little less. It’s a long journey. Buy comfortable shoes (and coffee, or tea, which I happen to prefer) and get walking, writers. Believe me, you’ll come to find that it’s worth it.  The Deadly SevenBlack Parade SeriesBook 2Kyoko M

Book Description:
Michael O’Brien. 24. New Yorker. Musician. Commander of Heaven’s army.
It’s been centuries since Michael stayed on Earth for an extended period of time. Now he’s here because of Jordan Amador—a Seer who helped him restore his life and memories and thwart the archdemon Belial from taking over the city. With Jordan on Belial’s hit list, Michael decides to stick around and live out life alongside her as her friend and temporary bodyguard. But as the days pass, he finds it harder to resist the seven deadly sins that tempt all men. Especially as he and Jordan grow closer fighting the demons who want her almost as much as he does…
Excerpt:
Being Jordan Amador’s angelic bodyguard against a horde of bloodthirsty demons was a lot of things, but certainly not boring.I checked my watch for the fortieth time in the last twenty minutes. Jordan usually got off at eight o’clock. Things had been quiet for over two weeks now, which was rare for a Seer’s lifestyle. She encountered ghosts with unfinished business a few times a month and that kept the both of us busy. Earlier, she had convinced me to meet her at the bus stop a couple streets over instead of in front of the Sweet Spot. “So would you mind waiting for me at the bus stop instead of out here?” she had asked, sweeping her shoulder-length black hair up into its usual high ponytail. I frowned. “Why? Doesn’t it kind of defeat the purpose of the whole ‘temporary bodyguard’ thing?”“It’s been quiet for a while now, Michael. Come on. Helping avert the end of the world and ganking an archdemon aren’t enough to prove I can take care of myself?”I glanced between her and the store front. A couple of her waitress friends who were watching us through the window scattered as soon as I looked over. Then it clicked.“They think I’m your boyfriend, huh?”Jordan got really interested in her shoes all of the sudden. “Yeah. They do.”I shook my head. She was an anointed soul charged with helping the dead find peace and yet she still cared what her coworkers thought of our relationship. I couldn’t decide if it was cute, frustrating, or hilarious. Possibly all three. Then again, I could see how her coworkers would get confused that a six-foot-tall, dark-haired, green-eyed “underwear model” (which I overheard one of them dub me last week) dropped Jordan off at work on a frequent basis. I decided to be lenient for once. “Fine. We’ll give it a test run today. If you survive, I’ll take it into consideration.”She shot me a scowl. “Gee, thanks, almighty Michael. I am humbled that you considered the request of a lowly human.”I grinned. “You’re welcome, my humble servant.”She rolled her eyes and swatted my arm before turning to head into the restaurant. “Later, pretty boy.”“Stay out of trouble.” I called, and then headed back towards the bus stop. That had been eight hours ago. Getting off a shift late wasn’t unusual for a waitress, but most times it was by only five or ten minutes. My instincts needled at me that something was off. Sighing, I fished out my cell phone and called her, tapping my foot. “Come on, Amador, pick up.”Several rings. A click. Voicemail message. Ugh. I hung up and stuffed my hands in my pockets. It was a short walk through the heavily trafficked area on this side of Albany, New York, but it was during one of the busier times of the day. Nighttime in the city meant chatty couples walking through holding hands, teenagers hollering and chasing each other down the street, and music pouring out from the clubs already packed to the rafters with the twenty-somethings. Two stop lights, one near-death experience courtesy of a speeding cab, and one step in some gum later, and I reached the glowing red sign to the Sweet Spot. The Southern cuisine eatery was busy. As much as Northerners made fun of the South in sitcoms and stand up shows, they sure did like the food. I pushed the door open and smiled at Beth, the head hostess. “Hey, you.”“Michael.” The short blonde grinned. “Good to see you as always.”“Is Jordan still in the back?”A slight frown marred her brow. “No, honey. She left about ten minutes ago.”I froze. “Left how? She was supposed to meet me at the bus stop.”“She went out back to take out the trash and I just assumed she went home after. Why? Something wrong?”A cold lump settled in my stomach. Something wasn’t adding up. Jordan wasn’t the type to disappear without texting me. I didn’t want to concern her friends so I kept my expression pleasant. “Nah, she probably just wandered off to window shop. I’ll catch up with her. Thanks, Beth.”“No problem, sweets.”I made a point to leave the restaurant in a casual manner, but once I was out of sight, I hurried around the block to the back of the building. The Sweet Spot was part of an entertainment district in this section of Albany. There were narrow alleys between the establishments and the streets ran parallel to the store fronts. The Sweet Spot’s back alley looked like any other restaurant in Albany—lined by dumpsters and garbage cans. The concrete was littered with fallen bits of food. A couple of mangy cats fought over fish bones. The entire area stank to high heaven. I called Jordan’s phone again and prayed that my instincts were wrong. The raucous chorus to Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy” echoed behind me. I turned towards one of the dumpsters and lifted the entire thing with one hand. Her phone lay cracked and forlorn underneath it.Shit.

Excerpt
They were falling.“What’s happening?!” Jimmy shouted. “Where’s Daniel?”Jimmy and Kendra had jumped through a hole in the top of the sky. There was no water to swim in and no ground beneath it. They were simply falling, from hundreds of feet above the kingdom. Kendra looked around. Daniel was nowhere to be found.“I don’t know!” she shouted.Jimmy and Kendra reached desperately for each other. They clasped hands and watched as they fell toward certain doom.  They could see the whole of the kingdom below. There was the central mountain Tree Stump had told them about, with the False Queen’s giant castle atop. A river ran from the north of the kingdom, around the mountain on both sides like it was an island, and into an endless, shining sea in the south. To the northwest were rock-strewn plains with volcanoes and rivers of lava. To the southwest was a welcoming and vast, lush forest. And to the east…was nothing but an impenetrable wall of grey clouds. They were falling straight for the castle. As they fell the ground became clearer and clearer. The False Queen’s soldiers were coming out of the castle barracks. Two red shapes began to rise into the sky beneath them.“Dragons!” Jimmy screamed.Jimmy was right. There were two, giant red dragons flying toward them. “Maybe they are good dragons?” Kendra asked. In response, the closest dragon shot a burst of yellow flame past Jimmy. The next shot wasn’t going to miss. Kendra and Jimmy held each other and waited to be fried. Then a terrifying roar like nothing they had ever heard shattered the air. It must have filled the entire kingdom below.  The red dragons heard it, but the sudden fear on their evil, snarling faces was coming from something they could see…Jimmy and Kendra looked up.A massive, black dragon, larger than the two red dragons combined, was flying directly above them. It opened its jaws and launched green dragon fire down at them. The stream of blazing hot flame rushed past them and hit its true targets, the red dragons. When the flame cleared, the red dragons were plummeting back to the ground.  The black dragon grabbed Jimmy and Kendra, one in each of its back claws, then turned and flew away from the army below. Kendra wanted to see if they had faces, but that was the least of her worries right then. In a matter of minutes they were low above the trees of the giant forest. The dragon dropped them both into the treetops. Jimmy and Kendra crashed through the branches and onto wooden platforms built high in the trees. They were shaken, but alive and together. Through the trees they watched the shadow of the great dragon disappear over the mountains in the north.
