Faery Queen Morgan LaFaye ~ Enchanter Redeemed by Sharon Ashwood

As a special feature, we bring our loyal audience household hints from the cast of Sharon Ashwood’s new release, Enchanter Redeemed.
Today’s question is answered by that mistress of menace, the Faery Queen Morgan LaFaye!
Dear Queen Morgan,
I hope you can help. I’m a new practitioner of the dark arts and every time I summon a demon, it makes a terrible stain all over my dungeon floor. What’s the best product to use to get it clean again?
Yours,SOS (Sick of Scrubbing)
My dearest SOS,
We’ve all been there. The dark curiosity, the thrilling rush of power, the ecstasy . . . and then the crushing let-down of cleaning up afterward. Blood and brains everywhere. It’s a bore.
However, you can prevent a sticky, caked-on mess if you do a quick once-over with soap and water just as soon as the ritual is finished. If there are scorch marks, a stiff bristle brush works wonders. Need I mention that scrubbing is what minions are for, dear SOS? That’s how I keep my claw-like nails looking glorious, so go kidnap a strapping peasant girl ASAP and put her to work.
That being said, don’t bother with the exotic cleaning products sold at tourist traps like the Brimstone Bazaar. Scouring powder doesn’t work any better just because it’s marketed in a skull-shaped container. Toothpaste works well for cleaning ceramic surfaces, and a bargain brand like Brainz-b-Gone is just fine for almost any ritual implements. Be sure to clean all your tools thoroughly—you don’t want any leftover substances mixing in with the next spell you brew. There’s no telling what you might summon, and kraken are very hard to put back if you conjure one by accident. It’s the tentacles, you know. They have a nasty tendency to wrap around the furniture and drag your entire living room suite down to the abyss. Insurance doesn’t cover that sort of thing.
I hope that’s helpful, SOS, and thank you for your question. Pride in our workspace is an essential element of a quality performance. Rampant evil does not excuse untidiness.
Yours in skulduggery,Morgan LaFaye
Kiss kiss, my darklings!

Excerpt:
Clary jolted awake. Power surged through her body, painful and suffocating. Her spine arched into it—or maybe away from it, she wasn’t sure. Merlin had one hand on her side and the other on her chest, using his magic like a defibrillator. The sensation hammered her from the inside while every hair on her body stood straight up. When he released her, she sagged in relief. A drifting sensation took over, as if she were a feather in an updraft.Merlin’s fingers went to her neck, checking for a pulse. His hands were hot from working spells, the touch firm yet gentle. In her weakened state, Clary shivered slightly, wanting to bare her throat in surrender. She was a sucker for dark, broody masculinity and he projected it like a beacon. All the same, Clary sucked in a breath before he got any big ideas about mouth-to-mouth. If Merlin was going to kiss her, she wanted wine and soft music, not blood and the dirty workshop floor.Another bolt of power, more pain, another pulse check. Clary managed a moan, and she heard the sharp intake of Merlin’s breath. His hand withdrew from her pulse point as she forced her eyes open. He was staring down at her with his peculiar amber eyes, dark brows furrowed in concern. She was used to him prickly, arrogant or sarcastic, but not this. She’d never seen that oddly vulnerable expression before—but it quickly fled as their gazes met.“You’re alive.” He said it like a fact, any softness gone.“Yup.” Clary pushed herself up on her elbows. She hurt all over. “What was that?”“A demon.”“I got that much.” Clary held up her arm, peering through the rents in her jacket where the demon’s claws had slashed. Merlin’s zap of power had stopped the bleeding, but the deep scratches were red, puffy and hurt like blazes.“Demon claws are toxic.”“Got that, too.”“I can put a salve on the wound, but you’d be smart to have Tamsin look at it,” Merlin said. “Your sister is a better healer than I am.”“She’s better than anybody.” Clary said it with the automatic loyalty of a little sister, but it was true. “She’s got a better bedside manner, too.”Merlin raised a brow, his natural arrogance back in place. “Just be glad you’re alive.”She studied Merlin, acutely aware of how much magic he’d used to shut the demon down. He looked like a man in his early thirties, but there was no telling how old he actually was. He was lean-faced with permanent stubble and dark hair that curled at his collar. At first glance, he looked like a radical arts professor or dot-com squillionaire contemplating his next disruptive innovation. It took a second look to notice the muscular physique hidden by the comfortable clothes. Merlin had a way of sliding under most radars, but Clary never underestimated the power he could pluck out of thin air. She was witch born, a member of the Shadowring Coven, but he was light years beyond their strongest warlocks. That strength was like catnip to her—although she’d never, ever admit that out loud. “What were you doing?” she demanded, struggling the rest of the way to a sitting position.“I was watching the demons through a scrying portal when you interrupted me.” His tone was precise and growing colder with every syllable. Now that the crisis was over, he was getting angry.“The she-demon tried to kill me.” Clary’s insides hollowed as the words sank home. Dear goddess, she did kill me! And Merlin had brought her back before a second had passed—but it had happened. Her witch’s senses had felt it happen. The realization left her light-headed.“She doesn’t get to have you,” he said in a low voice.Their gazes locked, and something twisted in Clary’s chest. She’d been hurt on Merlin’s watch, and he was furious. No, what she saw in his eyes was more than icy anger. It was a heated, primal possessiveness that came from a far different Merlin than she knew. Clary’s breath stopped. Surely she was misreading the situation. Death and zapping had scrambled her thoughts. “I shouldn’t have walked in on you.”“No, you shouldn’t have,” he said in a voice filled with the same mix of ice and fire. “You’d be a better student of magic if you paid attention. You asked me to teach you proper magic and not the baby food the covens use. Real magic is deadly.”Abruptly, he stood and crossed the room to kick a shard of agate against the wall. It bounced with a savage clatter. Clary got to her feet, her knees wobbling. He spun and stormed back to her in one motion, moving so fast she barely knew what was happening. He took her by the shoulders, the grip rough. “Don’t ever do that again!”And then his mouth crushed hers in a hard, angry kiss. Clary gasped in surprise, but there was no air, only him, and only his need. She rose slowly onto her toes, the gesture both surrender and a desire to hold her own. She’d been kissed many times before, but never consumed this way. His lips were greedy and hot with that same confusing array of emotions she’d seen a moment ago. Anger. Fear. Possession. Protectiveness.Volatile. That was the word she’d so often used in her own head when thinking about him. Volatile, though he kept himself on a very short chain. Right now that chain had slipped.

Why I Write Hellfire Women Guest Blog by Brantwijn Serrah

If there's one constant throughout my books, it's women with the devil in their blood.
What can I say? I'm a fan of the fiendish. A devotee of the diabolical. Most of all, though, I think the interplay of good and evil inside a woman's soul makes for the very best kind of story.
When we talk about our favorite fictional ladies, folks bandy about the phrase "strong, independent woman" a lot. But what does it mean? Is it a gal in a tight catsuit who kicks ass and takes names? A Lara Croft-type adrenaline junkie? A self-assured, self-made business executive in power heels who doesn't need a man to validate her worth?

On January 8th, Into Nostra, the second book in my supernatural adventure series of The Pact, was released by Champagne Books. Set against the backdrop of the weird west and a paranormal otherworld, it's a story of journeys. The leading ladies on these paths have each struck deals with the devil, thinking the power of the arcane is what they need to make themselves stronger. They sacrifice a piece of themselves for a promise of something greater, a way to protect themselves against the dangers of a hostile world. The problem, as they come to realize, is that they've made themselves part of the dangers—and maybe they've lost too much of themselves to the will of another.
I think, as a woman, it's an important struggle to consider. Women's role in society so often becomes one of self-sacrifice, for the sake of the others and a perceived promise of security. We've been 'domesticated' for centuries. Our unique power, spiritual and magical, is damped down and subjugated by hungry devils every day.
That's what the women of The Pact and Into Nostra represent to me. I didn't exactly mean for that to happen... All I wanted was to write a story about a witch and a bounty hunter, sharing their minds and bodies with demons they may not be wholly in control of. When I look deeper, though, I see why Serenity Walker's battle is so compelling for me to write about. She faces down villains and monsters in the world around her, but her most important struggle comes from within. It's a fight to first realize how she's been misled, lured into giving up part of herself, and a journey to then reclaim that power. Her counterpart Eliza Rose has fought that battle for centuries; hers is a story about walking the line, finding yourself somewhere between right and wrong, temperance and temptation, patience and desire. When she's pitted against an entity who would rob her of her agency and choice, who will she choose to be? The sacrifice? Or will she be the bad bitch in charge?
This is what I've learned from writing about Serenity, Eliza, and the women still to come in future books of The Pact. No woman can find her true strength anywhere but in herself. Her power doesn't lie the expectations of the outside world, but in her inner hellfire, her streak of wild magic, wicked tenacity, and defiant darkness. She's a little bit unholy and a whole lot of hero. She must be the kind of woman who will punch the devil in the face and then ask him for a dance. She'll catch bullets in her teeth and spit out nails. What's most important, though, is that she will do what it takes to seize the thing that matters most: her own bold, strongminded, audacious, and sovereign self.
And sometimes it takes a little bit of devil in your own soul, to be a hellfire woman

Book Description:
Deals with the devil always have their price. Problem is, the devil collects with interest.
Serenity Walker thought she had the upper hand when it came to her partnership with a demon. D’aej is dangerous, but he was always on her side. Then an old friend lifts the scales from her eyes, and Serenity sees her contract for what it truly is: imprisonment, bloodshed, evil. All done by her own hands.
Now Serenity must pay for her ignorance and work harder than ever to fight a demon who can use her body, fool her senses, even twist every thought in her head. Only one sorceress has the power to teach Serenity what she really needs to know…a sorceress possessed by a fiend even bigger and badder than any Serenity has seen before.

Excerpt:
A woman flickered into existence. As if stepping out of some eternal veil, she appeared without warning and made straight for Serenity in quick, purposeful strides. The wide, swooping brim of a black cowboy hat hid her eyes; long silver hair streamed out behind her like a pale, gossamer banner. The lithe curves of a predator couldn’t be hidden underneath her black corset and boiled leather leggings—sleek animal fur lined the tops of her boots, tribal moccasins dyed with deep ink and painted with runic markings along the seams.
Serenity managed to identify the symbols as the marks of a killer, but she had no time to move. All along this fighter’s arms danced a swirling dark energy, a kind of magic Serenity had never seen before: the shadowy swarm of a hundred darkling faces, crackling and howling like flames. Her mind flashed in panic back to the fehu tapestry in Eclipse, guarding the weaver’s blackest arts, and just as the woman raised both fists over her head to bring them crashing down on Serenity, D’aej seized control and ducked the body out of the way.
Don’t stare at her like a cow on the train tracks, he shouted across their bond, his anger echoing off the walls of her skull. Get moving!

When she isn't visiting the worlds of immortals, demons, dragons and goblins, Brantwijn fills her time with artistic endeavors: sketching, painting, customizing My Little Ponies and playing with graphic design. She can't handle coffee unless there's enough cream and sugar to make it a milkshake, but try and sweeten her tea and she will never forgive you. She moonlights as a futon for four lazy cats, loves tabletop role-play games, and can spend hours on end sketching characters and scenes in her secret notebooks.

Ages of Invention Books One and Two by S.B.K. Burns

Genre: PNR, Sci-Fi,Time-Travel, Steampunk
Date of Publication: December 2016
ISBN: 1521172862ASIN: B01N6EE13Q
Number of pages: 320Word Count: 79290
Cover Artist: Fiona Jayde
Book Descriptions:
She’s Hume’n, a member of the lower class, with one chance to change her life…
In an alternate, twenty-first century Boston, Dawn Jamison is a hair’s breadth away from earning her doctorate degree—a degree that would allow her entrance into the upper class, to become the unemotional and self-disciplined Cartesian she is now only pretending to be. To reach her goal, all Dawn must do is overcome her forbidden attraction to the Olympic-class weightlifter Taylor Stephenson who’s just crashed her lectures on past life regression. She must also teach her group of misfit students how to travel back into their past lives—and, oh, of course, figure out how to save the great scientists of the early eighteenth century before they’re inextricably caught up in a time loop.
He’s Cartesian, a member of the upper class, and supposed to know better…
Coerced by his politically powerful, wheelchair-bound brother into spying on Dawn’s past-life regression classes, Taylor knows better than to give into his desire to claim Dawn as his own. But his past-life entity, eighteenth-century Colin, has no such inhibitions. When Taylor and Dawn meet up in Scotland in the 1700s, all the discipline he’s forced on his twenty-first-century self disintegrates in the past, leaving only his overwhelming lust for Dawn’s past-life double, Lily. Unable to escape their sexually obsessive past, Dawn and Taylor find themselves in a race against the clock at the epicenter of a world-altering time quake of their own making.

Excerpt Entangled:
Before Dawn had finished the second suggestive sentence of her self-regression, she was here in the misty Lowlands of Scotland, not far outside Edinburgh. As on her previous trips, she was literally in Lily’s body, experiencing all the woman’s senses and emotions, but none of her thoughts. So frustrating.

Book Description:
It’s 1824 Philadelphia at the opening of the Franklin Institute of Science, and one of its founders, Samantha’s father, wants her to marry his business partner, a much older man, to keep their war industry dealings secret.
Looking for a way out of the arranged marriage, tomboy Sam finds it in Eagle, the half Native American son of the man she is to marry.
Eagle brings Samantha into his spiritual world, his bimijiwan, in order that she might stop their father’s preparations for an ironclad Civil War at sea. To do this, Sam might have to convince Benjamin Franklin to abandon his kite experiment.
Amazon
Excerpt Fly Like An Eagle:
Samantha had most probably escaped to the house. Migizi (Eagle) would return her shawl, hoping by the time he caught up to her, she would have put on something a little less fetching.
Her father had been wrong about him. Leaving me alone with Ronaldson’s nubile daughter? Look at her as a sister? He’d have more success taking flight by jumping off a cliff and flapping his arms.

Both romance and science have been central to the life of S.B.K. Burns (Susan). As a teen, she wrote romantic musicals between quarterbacks and cheerleaders. After a career as both a science teacher and advanced degrees in science, she began a ten-year journey of paranormal romance novel writing. Her ten books include two series: LEGENDS OF THE GOLDENS (about psychic vampires that protect humans from the baddies, even when the humans are not too keen on getting saved) and AGES OF INVENTION (alternate science history/steampunk: where Electress Sophia of The House of Hanover (ancestor to today’s British royalty) runs a time machine where she helps our heroes and heroines save the great scientists of history.

Amazon Excerpt 1:
She walked over next to the window so she could examine the binding of the book she held in the light. He leaned over curiously, trying to see what she was looking at.As they bent over the book together, the curtain rod gave one warning rattle and crashed down, catching Scout across the forehead, opening up a flap of skin as she smashed her head on the sill."Jesus!"George yanked the curtain and the offending rod off of Scout as the dogs scurried for cover."Scout! Scout! Are you okay?"She blinked up at him from the floor, nodding, trying to focus. She raised a hand to her temple, but George grasped it and held it away, shaking his head."No, don't touch, there's blood," he murmured. Blood?Jess and Bandit came back, sniffing at her worriedly, making her smile in spite of the circumstances."Make sure none of the blood gets on the books," she said, carefully placing the book up on the windowsill.George smiled at her words as he helped her up."Well, I intend to have some very strong words with my staff about how they replaced the curtains after they cleaned them," he said as he led her from the room."You have a staff?" Scout said asked in an amused voice."Well, okay, I guess 'staff' is rather a grandiose word for Alfred and Sunil from the village," George admitted. Scout was surprised at how relaxed and friendly George sounded. It was a different side to the silent and kind of sarcastic, frightening person she'd met earlier. They entered what looked like a guest bathroom, and George sat her down on the counter next to the sink so he could delicately dab at a fairly bloody but not deep gash on her temple with a bit of tissue, much to her embarrassment. The dogs hovered and watched."I can do this myself," Scout said, laughing."Don't be silly," George said, holding the tissue out of reach when she reached for it. "What if you were to become faint at the sight of your own blood and pass out cold, falling off the counter in the process?" He stopped talking so he could look in her eyes, staring from about an inch away. He could feel her warm breaths on his face, and backed up a little."When I was ten I rode into a mailbox on my bike while I was turned around yelling something to my friend Kenny, and I had to push my bike home for nearly a mile with my lip torn away from my cheek. It was over an inch long," Scout said conversationally. "I had to hold the skin closed the whole way. I needed seven stitches. You can still kind of make out the scar, see? I was fine, honest."But George insisted, and Scout finally gave up and let him minister to her, drawing in little hissing breaths as the antiseptic touched the raw wound. He finally stepped back, blowing on it. "Okay, all finished. I think you'll survive. And you might even have another romantic scar."He looked critically into her pale blue eyes. "Do you have double vision or anything?I'm a bit concerned about concussion, if I'm honest. I wonder if I should have a doctor out here to examine you?""No, I'm sure I'm fine," Scout protested. "Not feeling sleepy?" George persisted."Well, a little, but that's probably just jet lag, don't you think?" Scout said. "I promise I won't fall asleep."George looked at her.Scout hopped down off the counter and stood before him, a slight figure, standing straight.George finally nodded."How about this, then?" George proposed. "We'll make some coffee, go sit down, and talk until dinner. If you seem fine, that is to say if you're not drowsy or slurring your words or anything, then no doctor, okay?"Scout nodded too. "Okay," she agreed. "I guess you wouldn't want anyone dropping dead in your beautiful house," she joked.Oh fuck. He just looked at her for a moment before leaving the bathroom. She took quick steps and put a hand on his arm."I'm so sorry, Mr. Wilder, I really am. I'm always shooting off my mouth and waiting for my brain to catch up," she said contritely. He looked at her hand, then her eyes before giving her a small, crooked grin. "It's all right." He took a few steps before turning back."And Scout?"
She looked at him. "Please call me George."

Tagline: A legendary family is forced to fight against the most dangerous Pacific Drug Cartel. Will the de la Vega family succeed or will they die trying?
Book Description:
During the years of Mexican President Calderone, drug cartels fought pitched battles against other cartels, the police, the army, and the good citizens of Mexico. Kidnappings, murder, threats, and intimidation by drug cartels impinged on every facet of Mexican life.
This story of the de la Vega family in Culiacan, the state capital of the Mexican state of Sinaloa, tells of their struggles with the death of their beloved sister and the courageous brothers who become a force exacting revenge on the Pacific cartel.
The family ancestors moved away from Southern California during the 1840's as the influx of white settlers changed the culture and created certain discriminations against Mexican-Americans. The family legend is the de la Vegas sold out and relocated to Culiacan, Mexico where they quickly established prominence socially and financially. In Culiacan, the whispers are frequently heard of their great wealth and of being descendents of the great Zorro. Eduardo de la Vega, known for his dedication to his community and his patients as a noted benefactor and surgeon, and Teodoro de la Vega, a Jesuit priest, beloved by all who know him, vow to protect their city from the cartel. The de la Vegas act with extraordinary stealth, boldly striking at the cartel. Eduardo de la Vega leads a secret life of retribution abetted by his adopted brother, the business wizard, 'Flaco' Salas.
This is a tale of adventure, action love, honor, and strength of family despite constant danger and threat.

Excerpt:
An Untimely Arrest, January 5
Father Teodoro de la Vega was sitting in an ancient wooden swivel chair, working on revisions to his doctoral thesis Methodism in America, when he heard the soft buzzing of his cell phone. He picked up the phone, swiveling his chair around before he spoke to look out the high tiny window in his cramped office at the far end of the Culiacan Cathedral. “This is Father De La Vega.”“This is Lieutenant Flores of the federal police. We are trying to notify the family of Diego Sanchez. He has you listed as the family contact.”Father Teodoro’s eyes stayed fixed on the fronds of the tall palm tree growing in the cathedral’s backyard. “Yes, I am Diego’s brother-in-law. How can I help?”“I am sorry to inform you that your sister’s husband, Diego Sanchez, was arrested this morning and is currently being held in custody in Culiacan prison.” The lieutenant sounded subdued, deferential to the Catholic priest, sympathetic.Father Teo was silent for several moments. “Oh my God, this is a shock. My sister was kidnapped three days ago, on January 2. She and Diego have three young children, and now this.” Father Teo sighed deeply and made the sign of the cross.“I know about the kidnapping. I am so sorry. It seems your family is suddenly confronting great adversity. I can assure you that all the police agencies are working diligently to find your sister.”Father Teo took several deep breaths before responding. “Would it be possible for me to go see Diego now?”Lieutenant Flores was silent a moment. “Yes, under the circumstances, I’m sure there must be many arrangements to be made for the children. I will contact the prison and get your visit authorized.”Father Teo stood up, suddenly feeling dazed; his jaw clenched as his eyes riveted on the small statue of Jesus he kept on his desk. “I am on my way to the prison now.” He next forced himself to call his brother, Eduardo, and their father, Alfonso. He quickly concluded each call with “I’ll call you back as soon as I learn anything.”Father Teo quickly jogged down the hall and across the cathedral campus to his car. Outside, he stood beside his car and gazed upward for several moments, praying for his sister, Diego, and their children. Then he got into his battered Toyota and headed to the prison.Father Teo sat in the visitors’ waiting room for thirty minutes before the guards escorting Diego burst through the door on the prisoners’ side. They pushed Diego ahead of them and roughly shoved him into a chair. One of them said, “Sit down and shut up!” to Diego and waved a finger under Diego’s nose. Father Teo moved quickly to the cubicle opposite Diego and sat on the hard plastic chair in the narrow enclosure.“Teo, tell me about my family.” Diego was somber and seemed to have physically shrunk since the last time Teo had seen him only three days before.Diego’s usual state of casual good humor had been replaced with a pallid and tense facial expression. His eyes were tearing and moved only indirectly in the direction of Father Teo; he could not maintain eye contact for more than a moment. His eyes, now dark and sunken, slowly roamed the brightly lit room: floor, walls, ceiling, Father Teo.“We have had no contact with Tina’s kidnappers. We are doing everything we can to find her. Eduardo and I are moving heaven and earth to find her.The kids miss her and are understandably upset. How are you?”“I am depressed as hell. I’m scared out of my mind. I am so grateful to you and Eduardo.” Diego dipped his head and nervously checked the position of the guards. “Please do everything you can to get these charges dropped and get me out of here somehow.”“Of course you are depressed. Anyone would be in these circumstances. My father is talking to lawyers right now. Your arrest has come as a complete shock to all of us.”“I am embarrassed and stunned by my arrest too, Teo. Please tell my mother and the children that I love them, but I do not want them to come here. Seeing me in this place will only make things worse for them. Have you learned anything about the charges against me?”Father Teo chewed on his lip. He hesitated while a myriad of happy family memories flooded his thinking: Diego and Tina’s wedding, the births of their three children, and many family gatherings. “You are accused and charged with consorting with narco-criminals by laundering their illegal earnings, aiding the cartel’s hit men by providing them with shelter, engaging in a criminal conspiracy, and accepting financial assistance from the Pacific cartel. I’m still in shock, Diego. I don’t understand this. Is any of it true?”Diego squirmed in his seat and dropped his head to the Formica countertop of the little booth. “Oh my god,” he said this loudly, and the nearest prisoners on Diego’s side of the barrier turned in his direction. When he sat back up straight, his hands clutched his heart. Tears rolled down his cheeks.
