My eyes are heavy. I lean the seat back and let them drift shut, enjoying the rocking sensation in my head. The door opens again, and I squeeze my eyes tighter, casting out its brightness. I can sense a body next to me, but it doesn’t smell like Shannon. It smells like whiskey, spices, and wood. Peeling one eye open, I turn my neck. A black cowboy hat shadows most of the face that is looking at me. I open both eyes and lift my head off the seat. He tips the front of his hat at me. I blush, not because I’m flattered, but because people don’t do things like that where I’m from. “Hey, there sexy thay-ung.” He has a thick, southern accent, and his words slur. I press my lips into a firm line, fighting a smile. The passenger door closes, and the light goes out. But the glow of the streetlight is just bright enough that we can still see each other. “You’re so day-um pri-eee.” With his thick drawl, I can’t tell if the over annunciation is from his southern twang or the alcohol. “Thanks.” I feel his eyes on me. Needing a distraction, I grab my phone from the center console and troll Facebook for pictures from tonight. He can’t keep flirting if I refuse to look at him. Mr. Cowboy shifts in the corner of my eye. The sound of his body moving against the leather seat is hard to ignore. He leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees, hands clasped together. With its wild and turbulent past, Cripple Creek, Colorado has a history of unexplained, supernatural occurrences, no wonder it’s earned the reputation of one of the most haunted towns in America. Tales of haunted Cripple Creek hotels, casinos, and homes flourish.

The Imperial Hotel at Third Street and Bennett Avenue known originally as the Collins Hotel, was built after most the town burned to the ground in 1896. As a young man, George Long emigrated from Europe and eventually made his way to Denver. He married his first cousin and together they ran the hotel. The union produced two daughters and a son. The eldest daughter, Alice, was mentally disturbed and the parents were forced to keep her locked in their apartment next to the lobby for her safety and the safety of others.

Soon after George fell to his death while negotiating the narrow stairs to the basement. Or some say Alice escaped, waited for him at the top of the stairs, struck him over the head and he crashed to his death from the stop of the stairs. It’s rumored his ghost haunts the hotel to this day.

My experience at the Imperial Hotel was at the performance of Dracula by the Imperial Players in early 1990’s. The performance was excellent, but the strong feeling of someone watching, icy patches and pressure on my arm and lower back, when no one was there.

The hair on the back of my neck stood straight up. After meeting the cast in the lobby for an autograph session, my family and I quickly exited the hotel and raced to the safety of our vehicle, thankful that we hadn’t booked a room. Looking back on the experience, was it the performance of Dracula in the supposedly haunted hotel that caused my imagination to run wild, or was there really something there? I admit to having an overactive imagination, but not that time. In the years since, I’ve visited Cripple Creek on numerous occasions, to explore old buildings and mining shacks.

My husband and I drive up Hwy 67 to enjoy the turning of the Aspens in autumn, used to camp at the Lost Burro Campground but I haven’t set foot in the Imperial Hotel since that night.

Finally a planner for people who need to keep track of their health. 
This is a great way to keep track of your meds, treatments, symptoms, moods, appointments and more- all in one place. 
When you go to doctor visits you can take this with you so all your info is in one handy place.
It helped me keep track of my meds and symptoms which I had been having a hard time doing.
I highly recommend Plot Your Health for people with chronic illnesses.

I grew up listening to my Irish grandmother’s stories about the Fae, including her encounter with a Banshee in her family’s cellar when she was a teenager. Of her many stories, this is my favorite, and I love to share it every Halloween.  Enjoy!

… I lived in a large two-story house with my parents, younger sister, and grandmother. It was a cold, winter evening, nothing special or out of the ordinary. My family dined together, then my sister and I cleaned up while our parents and grandmother drank tea. We joined them at the dining table to do our homework, but my grandmother said she was tired and went upstairs to bed. My parents followed shortly after that, but my father paused on the landing.“Maeve, it’s going to be a cold night. Fetch us some coal, please.”I abandoned my homework, grabbed the empty coal bucket from the kitchen, and went down into the cellar. I filled my bucket and returned to the stairs. I had one foot on the first step when the temperature in the cellar, already cold, dropped dramatically. Chills ran down my back. Behind me, someone moaned.But how could that be? I was alone...Terror rooted me to the spot. The keening grew louder. I dropped my bucket and covered my ears. A cold wind bumped against my back. I stumbled forward as the shrieking wind rushed over me and up the stairs.But how could that be? The cellar had no windows...Above me, the cellar door slammed shut. The sound broke me from my stupor. I screamed and ran up the stairs and out of the cellar, through the kitchen and dining room, and up the stairs to my room. My parents and sister found me under my bed, shaking like a puppy lost in a snowstorm.“What is it? What’s wrong?” They asked me, while pulling me from my hiding place.“I heard the Banshee wail.”We stared at each other in silence, all of us reaching the same conclusion moments later.
