Dawn of the Dead (1978): Remembering George A. Romero’s Greatest Film Guest Blog by Thomas S. Flowers

Dawn of the Dead (1978): Remembering George A. Romero’s Greatest FilmGuest Blog by Thomas S. Flowers
Francine Parker: They're still here.Stephen: They're after us. They know we're still in here.Peter: They're after the place. They don't know why; they just remember. Remember that they want to be in here.Francine Parker: What the hell are they?Peter: They're us, that's all, when there's no more room in hell.Stephen: What?Peter: Something my granddad used to tell us. You know Macumba? Vodou. My granddad was a priest in Trinidad. He used to tell us, "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth."
Dawn of the Dead is among many things a very quotable movie. The scene above is probably everyone's favorite, and for some there are more selective scenes to nibble on. Scientists arguing on what remains of the news broadcast. The SWAT incursion of the Philadelphia apartment building. The refueling scene, the dock scene, the shopping montage. The raiders and ensuing firefight. There are plenty. And if you were to ask me, I can't really say if I personally have an all-time favorite scene, I mean let's be honest here, there are so many to choose from. From the very beginning, Dawn of the Dead lures you in and keeps your attention rooted into the story. The pacing couldn't be more perfect.
But before we delve any further, let's get one of those sweet sweet IMDb synopses’:
"Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall."
Okay, well...not bad. Not bad except for one fundamental thing. This synopsis violates one of the Laws of Romeroism. Also, btw, Romeroism is basically as it sounds, the rules or laws set in pace by George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead) as the originator of the "zombie" sub-genre as we know it today, that is the undead consuming the flesh of the living. Please see the following link for a complete detailed list of all the Laws of Romeroism. So which "law" did the synopsis violate? In Romeroesque zombie movies, the zombies are never called zombies...except for that one time in Land of the Dead when Dennis Hopper's character says, "Zombies...they freak me out, man."
Anyway, that's neither here nor there. The round-about point being that Dawn of the Dead was Romero's second film, the one in which he began establishing the rules for his "zombies." In Night of the Living Dead, he had (at the time) no idea that he was creating an entirely new sub-genre in horror, that his "ghouls" would eventually become more popular than that of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon (Gillman), and the Invisible Man, the pillars of horror themselves.
Dawn of the Dead was also the first "dead film" in which Romero wrote and directed without the help of his friend and partner from Night of the Living Dead, John Russo. I'm not entirely sure what caused the split, but in an interview with Lee Karr in 2009, this is what George had to say regarding Russo:"I love John, I still love John. John is the most practical guy - you can have a conversation with John about anything, politics, movies, whatever. Anything he says you may not agree with it, but he's got a practical approach to it...and therefore you can never defeat his arguments, even though you would like to! I just wish John would cut a couple of chords and loosen himself up a little bit. I think he is too strict on himself and he chooses a business approach. I think he could have been a superstar, but he took the safer route. He bet the red-black, instead of ever putting it on number 17."
Looking back at Dawn of the Dead, one can see the amount of risk George A. Romero put in to make this film. Dawn remained independent yet upped the budget that Night of the Living Dead had from 114,000 to 650,000. And Dawn would go on to gross over 5 million at the box office. Not only was Dawn a "home run" in terms of investment, but over the years it has remained in the hearts and minds of fans worldwide, earning itself a place within the lexicon of cult classics. Even infamous critic Roger Ebert said Dawn was, "one of the best horror films ever made -- and, as an inescapable result, one of the most horrifying. It is gruesome, sickening, disgusting, violent, brutal and appalling."
Watching Dawn of the Dead, one cannot escape the lure of the story. From the very get-go, we want to know what's going on. The first scene opens with a shot of red carpet and leading lady Francine Parker (played by Gaylen Ross) waking from a nightmare into a more literal nightmare. She's at a news-station, and the news ain't good (is it ever?). People are frantic, running every which way, barely holding on to whatever discipline they have left. Most have fled, as Stephen (played by David Emge) quips, "someone must survive." Francine seems determined to do her duty, and that is to broadcast as long as possible, but in the end let's go on the career she undoubtedly worked hard to build.
From the news station, we cut to an apartment building in Philadelphia (really in Pittsburgh) as a SWAT team readies to raid and dispose of the collected "dead" the residents have refused to hand over to the "proper" authorities. Martial law has apparently been given and the order stands that all "dead" must be properly "disposed" of. But as it seems, some still honor the dead, as I think Peter (played by Ken Foree) says later on during the raid. The most startling moment here is not when the brown makeup faced "Puerto Ricoian" comes running out only to get gunned down, but the small cracks in the demeanor of some of the SWAT members, most notably when "Woolie's gone ape shit, man." There's also a more foreboding scene with the one-legged priest, as he says:
"Many have died, last week, on these streets. In the basement of this building, you will find them. I have given them the last rites. Now, you do what you will. You are stronger than us. But soon, I think they be stronger than you. When the dead walk, señores, we must stop the killing... or lose the war..."
What is the priest talking about here? Just the undead in the apartment building, or something more? See, this is when horror really shines, when it forces audiences to ask the questions they typically avoid asking. This scene takes about less than a minute to play out, but the ramification of what was said are everlasting. And there are more questions that will be asked as Dawn of the Dead continues. From the apartment building, we're taken near the docks where Stephen and Francine prepare the News Helicopter for their impromptu escape from the city. If your watching the Uncut edition, there are some added scenes here. As Stephen radios, the "post has been abandoned." But not everyone had fled. The couple have a close shave with another party who have thoughts of running. A group of surviving police, as it would seem, with a notable actor who will make a return appearance in Day of the Dead, though not as the same character, are poised to take more than their share, giving Stephen a "hard time" for taking "company" fuel. Luckily, Roger and Peter arrive and chase the "bad men" away.
Our group escape the city unscathed and as they are flying around looking for refuge, they pass over another group of what we might imagine from the end of Night of the Living Dead, a hodgepodge collection of military, police, huntsmen, various first responders and country locals, all banded together. One might feel safe with them, as the saying goes, there is safety in numbers, right? Except for the odd sensation, the way they treat the dead or undead, playing around with them, wrestling with them, lynching them up in trees and using them as target practice. What does their actions say about the human condition? That we demonize our enemies and thus become demons ourselves, perhaps?
After another close shave fueling up, the group passes over an abandoned mall. They've been flying for hours now and are in need of rest. There's an upstairs area that seems isolated from the rest of the mall and so they decided to make camp. But after spending some time there, thoughts of looting and pillaging consume them, all but Francine who wants nothing more than to continue north. The boys get a sort of consumerist fever, that everything in the mall could be theirs if only they had the gumption to take it. And they do, they plan how to cut off the flow of undead from coming into the complex and work at removing those already inside. Roger (played by Scott H. Reiniger) is bitten during an episode he has, cracking up just like Woolie had at the beginning. And it really forces the question, was it all worth it? Sure, they get the spoils, there's even a fun little montage of them enjoying their hard fought gains. Eventually the fun wears thin and after Roger passes away, comes back, and is killed again, the sting is felt on the faces of the characters. As Francine says:
"Stephen, I'm afraid. You're hypnotized by this place. All of you! You don't see that it's not a sanctuary, it's a prison! Let's just take what we need and get out of here!"
Eventually raiders stumble upon the mall and more deaths follow. In the end, the mall is abandoned and we're left wondering was it worth it? Stephen could have listened to Peter and just let the raiders take what they wanted and go, but no. He became possessive, hypnotized by the lore of stuff, of ownership, even though they never really owned any of it. And what good did any of that stuff do? What could they do with it? Trade? Barter? What hole did the mall fill for those characters? Looking at the mall from a survivors perspective, it certainly had a feeling of security, four walls and all and plenty of space to run and escape. But as proved by the raiders, the mall is a high target. Protecting a bunch of stuff they can't even really use seems pointless, why not just take what they need and continue north as Francine wanted? What was the attraction of staying?
Personally speaking, I think it was the normalcy the mall offered. Stephen and Peter both quipped that the reason why the undead were coming to the mall was because it was a place of importance to them, something they "remembered." Yet, there they were too. For shelter, at first, yes. But they stayed for another reason, to "play house," as Stephen said to Francine when he was trying to convince her why they should stay at the mall. The mall had "everything they needed..." but did it really?
Dawn of the Dead was selected as the last film to be reviewed for this year's zombie themed Fright Fest because it is the fundamental "be-all" for a zombie movie. Fighting words for some, I'm sure. But few can deny the impact Dawn has had on the sub-genre and the continuingly growing culture surrounding the film. Dawn of the Dead is my personal favorite horror film, second only to John Carpenter's The Thing. Why? Well... Romero didn't rush the progression of the story, clocking in over two hours of gory storytelling, which I favor. The length and pace to me feel natural and wonderfully nihilistic. Not only giving us horror fans all the blood and guts we could have want for, but also giving us something else to chew on, all the various questions raised concerning humanity and concerning ourselves.

Excerpt from Prince of Dreams . . .An unnatural being from a family of shapeshifters. Even now Ophelia didn’t know whether to laugh or weep at the absurdity of it. Things like that didn’t exist. Except she knew they did, just outside the peripheral, where worlds of fact and fiction met and mingled and blurred. She’d felt their presence in the shadows of reality all her life. She met them in her dreams and visions. Kip Terriot gave them gorgeous face and form, but underneath, he was that creature with red eyes and sharp teeth. Her big, bad wolf, who’d protected her from a robber and defended her from abuse, who’d rescued her sister from the attack she still refused to acknowledge. Who loved his family and would do anything for them? Who she loved too much to let go but couldn’t give what he needed because she wasn’t his kind. Which was the greater fear, what he was or that she’d fail him?“What are we going to do, Phe? I don’t want to lose this.” He brought her knuckles to his lips for a kiss. “I don’t want to lose you. But I already have, haven’t I? You’re a million miles away right now and almost out of reach.” “I’m right here.” His argument brought her to him, her knees stepping over his lap to straddle him, arms circling his shoulders, face nestling against the curve of his throat where she rode his hard swallow. He held tight, trying to believe they could make this moment last, this glorious, fiery, tender moment that offered so much and promised so little. “You are my prince,” she whispered, breath moist and soft against his neck. “My Prince of Cups. You rode into my life bringing romance, shaking my world to its foundation that first night I met you. It was in the cards.” “Fate,” he murmured, smile in his voice. “No escaping it.” His fingers threaded through her hair, pulling back gently to tip up her face, offering sweetly parted lips and glistening eyes. He’d planned a sweet kiss but the taste of urgency and need in the sweep of her tongue ruined that noble ambition. They feasted upon one another for long, desperate minutes until she rocked back, thumb swiping the dampness from his mouth.
“Go, be who you need to be for them. Then come back and be who I need you to be.

Wicked Harvest: Michigan Monsters and Macabre by Jerrod S. Smelker

Why Fall? Why Halloween? Why Michigan? And what does this have to do with these stories and books?
Let’s start with the great state of MICHIGAN. I consider myself lucky to have been born and raised in Michigan; a state I consider to be the absolute best in the country. I was born in Hastings in the early 70s, and then when I was about 18 months old, my mother, sister and I moved to the charming small town of Ionia. My mother was originally from Ionia; in fact, my grandparents owned and operated a locksmith and bicycle business there, started in the 1940s. My child-rearing years were spent living in town, living on a farm and living in a trailer park until I graduated high school. I had a good childhood, a typical childhood where my imagination was able to run wild.
Once I became an adult, I moved around quite a bit; Kalamazoo, Lake Odessa, Grand Blanc, Pewamo, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Middleville and on and on. I’ve had the pleasure of driving all over the state visiting beautiful and wonderful towns like Petoskey, Holly, Munising, Harbor Springs, Mackinac City, Lexington, Flint, Fenton, Port Austin, and Grand Haven to name a few. All of these towns have left lasting memories, thoughts and ideas for me because they each offer unique sights, architecture, people and history.
Living in Michigan my whole life not only have I seen some amazing cities, towns, parks and beaches, but I have also heard many of its spooky legends, ghost stories and tales about its many haunted locations. I thought to base a series of spooky stories and books that included actual Michigan locations would be an excellent way for me to pay tribute to the people, places and things. As I said, it is the greatest state in the nation!
Nothing on earth gets my mind, body and soul aroused like the season of FALL. I get excited about the three months of September, October and November more than a person probably should (But I know I’m not alone). I look forward to the fall season every year and have since I was very young. And every year and I get asked, “What is it about fall you love so much?”
First, I call it fall; always have, always will. Some people call it autumn. I guess it depends on who you ask or where they’re from. I love the word autumn, but most people I know say fall. I guess for me, it doesn’t really matter what you call it, what matters is all that comes with it. It’s a laundry list of things that come with the season that gets me excited and makes everything in the world seem…right.
It’s the chill in the air and the crisp clean cool breeze, wearing warm cozy sweatshirts or my favorite flannel shirts, making s’mores over a bonfire with family and friends, drinking cider and eating donuts from a visit to the local cider mills and orchards, picking out those perfect pumpkins at the pumpkin patch to carve Jack O‟ Lanterns or just place as decorations, driving around taking in the sights of the beautiful colored leaves, drinking hot flavored coffee or hot cocoa on the porch, tasting all of the fall seasonal craft beers and hard ciders, the smell of burning leaves and wood burning in fireplaces, not having to deal with those pesky summer bugs, crock pot slow roast dinners, chili cook-offs, and yes, even the pumpkin spice everything!
To me, there’s no emotion and sensation like what I get and feel during the fall months. Even though I know the dreaded winter will soon follow. Still, I embrace the season for all it’s worth and bask in the pure comfort on how everything about it makes me feel. I could go on, but I’m sure you understand.
Everyone has their favorite holiday. Sure, I love Thanksgiving for the bounty of delectable food and watching the traditional football game. Christmas with the pretty lights, gifts and more delicious foods and even St. Patrick’s Day isn’t too bad with a cold Guinness in hand. But, for me, hands down, the best holiday is HALLOWEEN.
For starters, it’s smack dab in the middle of my favorite fall season. Second, it’s just so much fun, has so much tradition and you get to dress in costume to become anything and anyone you want…even if it’s for just one night. Oh, then third; the candy. Lots and lots of candy!
Yes, even as an adult I like, nope, love the candy.
Granted, I don’t go Trick-or-Treating anymore, but I thoroughly enjoy decorating the house and handing out candy to all the little ones in the neighborhood. And if I have candy left in the bowl at the end of the night…so be it. Halloween is just fun and it can make us all remember what being a kid is all about.
I have enjoyed celebrating Halloween since I was a toddler. I love and appreciate the folklore behind it, the traditions, the parties, and the creatures and costumes. I’ve always admired and respected the classic tales of Dracula, Frankenstein and the myths and legends told by friends and family…especially real-life ghost stories. I look forward every year to watching The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and movies like Sleepy Hollow, Trick R Treat, Hocus Pocus, Young Frankenstein, Underworld, Zombieland, The Lost Boys and so many others. So bring on the bats, skeletons, black cats, witches, Jack O‟ Lanterns, ghosts, ghouls and goblins, and creatures and monsters of all kinds!
So why this book? Why now?
When I started writing articles and stories years ago, I never envisioned myself as a horror writer or any kind of scary story writer. Then one day in the fall of 2017 I was talking to my wife and kids about scary stories and then immediately got an idea in my head for one. That idea eventually became the Stone Hollow story. Funny enough, written about the very subdivision that I live in.
Once I wrote that first one I got hooked and couldn’t stop writing. The ideas and thoughts were pouring out of my head faster than I could type. I had notepads and pieces of paper strewn everywhere with ideas. I finally created a document called Ideas and it was just that; all kinds of story ideas, characters, partial paragraphs, locations, dialog…everything to keep my thoughts together so I wouldn’t lose them. There’s nothing worse than having a great idea and then forgetting it later.
Once I had a dozen full stories together, I wondered what to do with them. I thought about trying to enter writing contests and submit some to anthology books (which I did a few), but then I thought maybe I would just put them in book form and do things my way. My hope was that people would read them and enjoy them as much as I do.
Heck, I know there are hundreds of horror writers out there and I know my stories may not be made into blockbuster movies, but I'm going to let my imagination run wild and do the best I can. The plan is to make Michigan Monsters & Macabre a series of books; perhaps 5 to 10...if I’m lucky.
...add now it has really got my gears moving and I'm excited not only to write scary stories but to write other short stories and books as well. Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me. I better make a few pots of coffee...it’s going to be a long year!

My family loves to binge-watch paranormal movies and TV shows for Halloween, especially those involving vampires and werewolves. Here are our top ten picks for your All Hallows’ Eve viewing pleasure…
1. The Underworld movies. Love all of those digitally rendered Lycans!
2. Wolf (1994), starring Jack Nicholson. Seriously, it’s *Jack Nicholson*. Enough said. :-)
3. An American Werewolf in London (1981). Classic.
4. The Lost Boys (1987). Naughty vampires, wicked good fun.
5. Blade (1998). Action!
6. From Dusk Till Dawn, (1996). And more action!
7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series and its spin-off, Angel. Vampires, werewolves, and more, oh my! Joss Whedon rules.
8. Vampire Diaries TV series and its spin-off, The Originals. Sexy, naughty vampires, kickass werewolves, and a whole slew of entertaining witches.
9. True Blood TV series. Vamps, wolves, witches, and the fae. Fun, funny, dark, and bloody.
10. One last movie, and my all-time fav, The Cabin in the Woods (2012). Funny, a bit scary with some good and creepy transformation effects, and chock-full of great lines such as: “Yeah, uh, I had to dismember that guy with a trowel. What have you been up to?” and, “Hey, shh, no. I totally get it. I’m sorry I let you get attacked by a werewolf and then ended the world.”

When he finally chooses to show up to repair her dinosaur statue, it couldn’t have happened at a worse time.
Ottar’s calendar has been packed full of mythical beasts to capture. Upon return to Haber Cove for his friend River’s wedding he has to contend with the crazy but hot vegan’s dinosaur, but a surprise awaits him. Haber Cove is infested with flesh-eating, ankle-biting Jack-a-lopes, and a pack of large black Hell Hounds. Will all hell break loose when he finds who let the dogs out? Tempting The Light, Book One

Pursuing the Light, Book Two
Excerpt 1: Pepper needed to put as much distance between her and Ottar as possible. That kiss. Oh my gosh. He was a master. The possessive, wild kiss made her want to strip his clothes and take his exquisite body next to the stream. What the heck had gotten into her? Did he really believe that crap about an attraction spell? Nonsense talking Aussie. There was no way she spelled him while she and Abby were trying to banish the evil jinn. Ottar must be one of those crazy conspiracy theory people, though, she’d never pegged him as paranoid. She gunned the gas and took off down the overgrown path into the forest. A gunshot sounded. Pain exploded in her upper arm. Glancing down at the blood on her sleeve, she looked up too late. A low branch smacked her across the chest. She flew off the four-wheeler and crashed onto the ground. Her body throbbed. The coolness from the dirt chilled her spine. Breathe. Ottar ran toward her, screaming, with his gun drawn. The bastard shot her? First her dinosaur statue and now her. What next? He’d lost his sanity. She’d always suspected something wasn’t right with him. Now she had proof. Her arm ached, and blood seeped through her sleeve. The pounding of her heart accelerated, each beat almost blending into the next.
Ottar closed in, but she wasn’t going to let him finish the job. Was the kiss so upsetting that he wanted to kill her?

Bonnie Gill grew up in the suburbs right outside Chicago. As a child she loved making up ghost stories at night to scare her sisters and friends.
She writes Paranormal Romance with a twist of humor. When she isn’t writing you can find her on a haunted tour, volunteering at pet rescues, or digging around in her fairy garden waiting for fairies to show.
She lives in Northern Illinois with her three rescue dogs and her ever patient boyfriend who laughs at all her goofy jokes.
She loves to hear from her readers.

Excerpt Rise The DemonsParis, France 1852
In a derelict neighborhood on the fringe of Paris, one burning red eye glowed through the crumbling foundation of a formerly grand hotel. While family and friends still struggled to put the Revolution’s gory ugliness behind them, their every move was scrutinized by a trapped predator. Raimond kept watch, as he had done for decades, until his eye smoldered from distant sunlight. Switch eyes. A smile drifted across his face while children scurried behind their parents, shopkeepers threw open their doors and the light of hope shone on every street except one. The worn and rutted surface of Rue Le Cross remained cloaked in darkness. Footsteps echoed off the cobblestones outside Raimond’s portal and he strained to see the trespassers. He flinched at the sight of glowing torches, retreating again into his underground gloom. A woman barked orders. “Tell those youngsters to stay behind the barricade.”“Go to school, you little fools!” a man called out. “This is no place for kids…or anyone.”“What are you so afraid of husband?” Raimond stepped forward to hear the man’s answer. I should hope they’re scared.“I’m not the only one who hears the awful noises in this passage after dark and it’s always night on this bloody street.”“Can we just light these lamps and get out of here?” The woman’s eyes darted around. “The mayor paid both of us a fortune.”Here they go again. The gas lanterns blazed to life and Raimond drummed his fingers on the wall. “They’re burning,” the woman hissed. “But why are they flickering?”The flames shivered and gasped, as if being blown out by invisible lips. Raimond shook his head. “This alley is cursed. Every lock is broken. Nothing opens.” The man rattled handles and knobs. He froze at the shuttered hotel’s rusty door. “Do you hear that?”Raimond rhythmically smashed a rock on the iron bars of his prison.“We didn’t get paid enough for this wife.”A menacing growl ricocheted off the walls and the couple dropped their torches, slammed into each other and scrambled toward the main street. Don’t come back. Raimond let the rock slip from his grasp and slumped against the dusty wall. Those doors are jammed shut for a reason. As the final, auburn embers of sunlight faded behind the craggy roofline, the underworld groaned to life. Raimond turned around to the absolute black of the catacombs and the squeal of rodents that drowned out hungry cries. He kicked a rat across the cell and his stomach twisted at the whimpers of miserable children sleeping in the cold. They were all victims of a monster that the mortal world above didn’t believe existed. He didn’t have the heart to tell the little ones they were vampires, too. He sighed. None of us will ever be warm again.Raimond punched walls he’d been beating on for years. A few remaining slivers of stone broke free and he slid to the floor, clawing at his eyes. Don’t fall apart now, soldier. This moment has been years in the making. As an officer, he’d been expected to sacrifice his life. Until a maniac stole my soul. That crime was nothing compared to what the innocents who lived beneath the street with him had endured. Tonight, it all changes. In a flash Raimond slammed into iron bars that tore the skin from his forehead. He drew a breath of putrid air. The villains beat me and I plotted. He looked at the blackened skin of his hands. They burned me, and I schemed. His escape from the torture was a dive into the darkest corners of his mind, and each time he let himself dream, the hallucinations became bloodier and deadlier. Never mind revenge; I want absolute victory. His eyes wandered across the dungeon full of unwilling vampires, landing first on a fellow soldier.Such an odd story, a Scot fighting alongside the French. Two younger lads slept next to the burly man, both clinging to the ends of a tattered blanket. Nuns, farmers and even patients from the local infirmary had been ripped from their beds and turned into slaves by a madman. In the middle, a young nurse huddled with the frailest children. Her voice, touch and passion to heal had never faltered, despite the hellish conditions.
Convincing these lost souls that they have a future worth living—that will be a challenge.

Anne Marie has been an equestrienne, chorale singer, EMT and baseball fan.
Roaming the back roads of New Jersey with her family, she found great respect for antiques, historical locations and the stories they hold. Her current list of favorite pastimes includes coffee, bourbon and Les Misérables—which requires more bourbon. She has been known to attend sporting events just for the flyover. The boat she and her husband christened Glory Days, is her escape from the chaos of everyday life.
The inspiration for Raimond and Monsters & Angels is Anne Marie’s fascination with vampires, castles and her passion for everything New Orleans. When she isn’t writing, she can be found working nights with the critical care team in a busy trauma center.

But there are other tales told around the fire at night. The man finding the steps into hell and sanity flickering away. Mind control experiments by governments, big and small. The woman married to the man of peculiar tastes. There are the haunted hospitals, sleep trials in Russia and more.

What Sleep Hid By J.M. Butler
What if our dreams hid us from more than consciousness?
Almost the entirety of Kaya's marriage has been spent in the tortured grip of her husband's horrific insomnia. Darryl's illness has nearly destroyed their lives though they cling to one another. No matter how hard it gets, Kaya swears she will be there for him, and she has stuck with him through trials, studies, and experiments. Now Darryl has a new plan: participate in an experiment intended to completely eliminate the need for sleep.
Kaya fears what this may hold though the doctor appears kind and competent. A blue-cloaked stranger adds to her concerns, warning that sleep is not only essential for sanity but hiding us from predators that hunt us across the dimensions. But convincing her husband, the doctor, and the other members of the experiment proves almost impossible, and Kaya must uncover a new solution or lose the man she loves forever.
EXCERPT:"I’m fine." Kaya paused, seeing Janis staring intently into the chamber. He didn't appear to be looking at anyone. His gaze instead was transfixed on a point on the wall. "Is everything all right?" Kaya peered inside as well.Janis slipped in front of the speaker. Not moving his eyes, he held down the switch. "We've passed day six, and you’re all doing quite well. All your vitals check out. Good breathing. Good focus." He sounded as if he intended to read a bedtime story. Yet his body language was sharp and tight. "Now I want you to take a moment and look around the room. Look at the walls, the floor, the ceiling. Do you see anything new or unusual?" Kaya saw nothing. Darryl and the others looked around. They appeared more confused than disturbed. Darryl scratched his head. "Should we be worried?""Are there creatures coming in?" Jeremy dropped his book, looking around wildly. "What are we supposed to be looking for?" Brenda asked."Just anything that seems unusual," Janis said, his voice as measured and calm as before.Dr. Nem slapped Janis's hand. "Stop." He shoved Janis away and pressed the switch. "Please pay no attention to that. Nothing is different. Everything’s fine."Kaya glanced back at Janis. Though he had backed away, his gaze remained fixed on that point. Goosebumps prickled along Kaya's arms. "What do you see?" "Possibly nothing." Janis forced a smile, but a tremor of fear passed through his face. "Possibly?" Kaya echoed. The doctor sighed. "Enough, Mr. Janis."Janis's brow furrowed. He opened his mouth to speak, then left.Kaya followed. She quickened her pace as he passed through the doors. "Wait! What did you see?" The doors thudded shut behind her.Janis turned on the water fountain and splashed cool water on his face. Kaya’s heart raced faster. "What did you see?" Janis wiped his face on his sleeve. "There's now a fissure in our dimension.""A fissure?" Kaya echoed. "Could it be something else? A crack in the glass or the wall?" She hadn't seen anything though. Maybe he’d imagined it."Perhaps.""Can you sound more convincing?" "I’m going to reiterate my first point. This experiment ends in death. You should go." "I'm not leaving Darryl here!" Kaya snapped."Then you and he will die, and there's probably nothing I can do to stop it!" Janis thrust his hands into his hair and ripped them out. Fine strands of pale blond hair clung to his fingers. He trembled, closing his eyes. "I’ll do everything I can to keep everyone alive. I will. I promised that." Though his hands still shook, he strode away. Kaya watched him, afraid to follow but afraid to return. The terror in his voice, the trembling…that didn’t seem false. Maybe he was only crazy. But her gut warned he wasn’t as wrong as she hoped.

The Noise Above UsBy Alyssa Brocker
Cory and Sapphire are lost. When they meet at a support group for coping with a deceased parent, they find one another. Everything’s seemingly perfect until unexplained occurrences happen where the two call home. They find out their lives on a vacation island aren’t all beaches and relaxing summer days. The events from fifteen years ago refuse to stay concealed. Who, or what, is the source of these disturbances? Is it their parents who passed too soon trying to contact them? Or is it something much darker? The young pair are forced to uncover the secrets buried in the sand. It’s a risk that will not only threaten their budding relationship, but their lives.
EXCERPT: The quiet ticking of Sapphire’s watch is the only sound in the bakery. She’d worked alone many times, but this Saturday morning is different. The slight warmth of the oven, once comforting, now seems too hot, as if it could burn her at any second. The knives, sitting innocently in their correct place, appear almost menacing. She can’t explain it, Sapphire just knows something’s wrong, something’s off. What happened yesterday is only part of it. This is a gut feeling that something bad is about to happen. Is she being paranoid? Or are her instincts telling her something her mind hasn’t yet figured out. What would her mom say to her if she were here? Sapphire pauses, a soapy spatula still in her hand. She suddenly feels as though someone is watching her, studying her every movement. Slowly she turns, afraid to look, but knowing she must take the chance. “Hello… Quinn?” Sapphire calls out for her coworker she knows won’t be here for another half an hour. She audibly gasps when the timer for her cookies alarms. With shaking hands, she reaches in her pocket, quieting the annoying buzzing. Shaking her head, she breathes deeply. She’s being overly suspicious. The quiet footsteps interrupt her moment of relief. She’s rooted to her place in front of the sink, absolute fear paralyzing her. Suddenly it sounds like someone's running at her. Remaining still, afraid to even look away from the sink, she's frozen. As quickly as they start, they stop. It was as if Sapphire had imagined the entire thing. “Mom… help me.” She pleads for someone who isn’t there, someone who could never be there for her again. Minutes click by, as she remains motionless, too terrified to move. With her hands gripping the edge of the sink, she realizes she has to do something, anything. It’s nearly been a twenty minutes of her staring at the soapy water. “Uh, I think your cookies are burnt.” Quinn says behind her. Sapphire jumps in surprise. “You okay, Sapphire?” Her small blonde head tilts as she takes in Sapphires state of shock. “No, Quinn, I’m not.” Sapphire's voice cracks. “I feel like someone’s here, Quinn. I don’t know if it’s human, a ghost, or even my dead mother. I just know that I’m not alone. I heard footsteps sprinting at me, and I didn’t do anything! I just stood here.” Quinn stays silent through Sapphire's breakdown. At the end of it, she seems frightened and relieved at the same time. “You hear the footsteps, too?”

Don’t Think Of MeBy Angie Brocker
Suddenly without her identical twin, Bree Carpenter attempts to heal and become her own person despite constant reminders of the shy, smart sister she recently lost. But Lena’s memory may be more dangerous and sinister than she could have ever been capable of when she was alive. Is it possible for the suppressed anger and resentment Lena felt before she died to come alive and murder those who want to remember her? Can a person’s existence be completely erased into nothingness?
EXCERPT:Justin thought he heard a knock at the door, but he wasn’t sure he’d be able to distinguish that sound from the pounding in his head. “Why do I do this too myself? Damn my Irish liver,” his words sounded unfamiliar even to him. Too many shots of whiskey had left his throat dry and swollen. Attempting to stand, he braced both arms on his bed to push himself to an upright position. Focusing on the room around him, it was difficult to determine which direction he needed to shuffle his feet toward. Hearing three distinctive loud knocks, he knew someone was trying to get his attention. “Hold on! I’m coming, it will just take me a minute to get there. If that’s you, mom, please come back later. You wouldn’t want to see your son in this condition,” he spoke out loud and then laughed at himself as much as he could manage. Three more knocks irritated Justin’s highly susceptible senses, and he tried to yell, “If you can’t wait, you can leave! I’ll get there when I get there! We just had a party to remember sweet Lena. Sweet, beautiful, quiet Lena! Don’t you respect the dead? I sure as hell do! What is wrong with you?” Reaching the door, Justin asked, “Who is it? This better be good!” After no answer was received, he wondered if he was still drunk enough to dream this entire scenario. Looking through the tiny peephole in the door, Justin witnessed the black shadow of someone standing to the left of the door. “Make yourself known or I will call the police. I’m in no mood for this, and I’m cranky, tired and hungover. There’s a good possibility I’m still pretty wasted. So let’s just make this easy on ourselves. Who are you, and what do you want?” Justin heard three more knocks, but no verbal answer to his inquiry. Enraged, he opened the door, ready for a fight. “Listen motherfu…” and then he was silent. The only sound in the hallway was a metal bat hitting his skull. He couldn’t scream, there was no time. Justin had no idea he had been hit or that blood was streaming from his eyes almost instantly. He fell hard to the ground and was struck twice more, until his face was unrecognizable.

The Eyes Have ItBy Wendy Cheairs
Hospitals are safe places, a place to go when you or loved ones are ill. Old places though have memories, long and distant that sometimes still affect the modern day. Disbelief has no place here, since believe is not needed to be real. Science can still only explain so much. Welcome to the local children's hospital, it might be haunted they say. State of the art technology takes care of everything, right?
EXCERPT:Flu season had hit the city and surrounding areas, but for most the symptoms were not as intense, especially not in one so young. The fathers had combed through the internet, running out of options. WebMD made it sound as if this awful sickness was a wasting disease, malaria, or worse. The unbreakable fever continued, and not even ice could cool her down. It was consuming her, driving her into herself as she tried to hide under an oversized quilt.Clammy hands curled into claws, holding her tattered rabbit, Mr. Hoppy, in a death choke. The fever ravaged, adding hints of blotchy red patchworking along with the sweats and shakes. Hours had blurred into days as the inferno of illness possessed their little girl. Her fathers watched helplessly in the coolness of the dark desert valley as the endless sleepless nights.Oliver called the nurse’s hotline for the hundredth time. The woman’s voice came through the phone swiftly after the dull hold music.“How can I help you this evening?” She spoke gently, dealing with stressed parents had given her a soothing tone to keep people calm. “Our daughter is still sick. Our pediatrician is out of town, we have done the whole let the flu work its way through, but it is getting worse.” Oliver rushed forward. “Her skin keeps getting blotchy red spots; she has the shakes and sweats from her fever that won’t go below one hundred.”Once finished, he was out of breath, and the nurse waited a moment to make sure he wouldn’t continue.“It is time to go to the local children’s hospital, Carrie Tingley. They specialize in pediatrics, hiring doctors from the top of their class.” The nurse continued with the address and local number since they lived on the opposite side of town

Melt Me By Maggie Jane Schuler
When Jade Sterling returned home to Diablo for a fresh start, she never expected to run into her first crush.
Cody McAllister had a passion for women and chocolaty treats that were well known around town. She refused to be a part of Cody’s harem, despite his efforts. She was in town to teach, and temptation by his green-coated morsels was not an option.
However, when mysterious green candies appeared on her desk, she needed help to discover if her past arrived back home with her
EXCERPT:With her purse in one hand and the innocuous gift in the other, she pushed the driver’s door closed with her tush, ready for battle. After a relaxing breath, she straightened her shoulders with confidence and stepped toward the entrance of The Pub. “Good evening, Jade.” The deep, panty-melting tone sang in her ears from across the lot. He was leaning against his Camaro but pulled himself upright when her eyes landed on his. He sauntered his way to her side, and the alluring smile on his face was accented with those deep charming dimples that sent a message low in her belly where butterflies somersaulted. “I guess this will be easier out here.” She shoved the glass jar into his chest and took one more gulp of air into her lungs. “I will not be a one-night—” “Where did these come from?” His baby blues examined the jar with what had to be a hint of feigned innocence lacing his question. Like he really didn’t know! “You,” she seethed. “You left them on my desk. Please keep your hands and sweets to yourself.” His brows furrowed, and he looked annoyed now. “These aren’t from me.” “Stop with the bullshit.” Jade put a hand to her hip. “Everyone in town knows you pop candy like a junkie.” His brow rose. “I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else. I would never leave this rookie jar of less than adequate candy. Mine has a purposes. You’ll see.” He gestured at the front door. “If you give me a chance, I might be able to help you out.” The air crept out of her body. Her cheeks warmed with embarrassment as she debated if she should follow or leave as she intended. His offer seemed genuine and innocent but this was Cody McAllister, womanizer extraordinaire. “Come on, I don’t bite.” He winked and cradled her elbow in his hand as he guided her to the edge. The one she promised not to cross. But her body followed him, leaving her brain and heart bickering in the parking lot.

They Walk Among Us: The Legend of the SkinwalkerMorgan Heyward and Charlotte E Dhark
Torn from her vacation in The Big Easy, Detective Clary Young headed to northern Arizona and her newest case. A specialist in the field of paranormal serial killers, law enforcement had evidence pointing in that direction, and they needed her help—pronto. Little did she know, she’d find herself embroiled in something bigger and far more sinister.
EXCERPT:Images of fire and smoke moved in a slow frame-by-frame picture show behind her eyelids. Men dressed in beaded deerskin breeches with feathers braided in their hair danced around a bonfire—their skin shiny and soaked with sweat—the movement of their limbs sinuous and hypnotic. The thump of animal skin drums beat in a deliberate, steady rhythm in the night. Chanted words floated and weaved with the drumbeats and drove the steps of the dance. A pair of orange eyes blinked open outside the ring of fire—watching. They hovered in an invisible body that paced back and forth, just out of sight. She spied the feather headdress first. Standing straight and proud, he towered over the others as he prowled his way through the dancers. The drums stopped, and all attention focused on him. Lines and swirls of ocher and ash adorned his bare chest and arms. His long hair hung in a river of black down to his waist—pieces of leather cord knotted with feathers woven through the braids decorated his tresses. Eyes the color of butterscotch peered from behind a blood-red mask and stared into the deep night. His deep voice offered an invitation. “Come and join us, demon. Let us purge the evil from your soul.”A distorted scream answered him—the answer a macabre mixture of tortured animal and human alike. The night breeze shifted and disturbed the flames of the bonfire. Their shadows stretched into hungry mouths and slid angrily across the dancers’ naked chests. Movement on the periphery caught their interest and all heads turned as one to focus there. The stench of rotting flesh blanketed them as the next breeze passed through the group. The demon stepped into the ring of light amid a chorus of angry growls.“Silence.” The warrior’s voice thundered over the din, the reverb snapping everyone to attention.A coffee-brown wolf, at least four feet at the shoulders, padded toward them. Its fur hung in matted clumps of dead skin and mud. Old blood stained its muzzle a copper brown, its face twisted and distorted painfully as flies buzzed and hovered. Maggots created an eerie wave of moving flesh under the hanging fur and fell to the ground in little writhing clumps with each movement forward. With a wide spread of his arms, the warrior called out, “Welcome into the light, ma’iitsoh. May your spirit fly free. Let Mother Earth welcome you with open arms, your sins against her children forgiven, and embrace her son, once again.”

A Dance Before MidnightBy Kristin Jacques
Amy loathes working at La Popular dress shop. It's not the job, it's the tourists, who come from far and wide to view La Pascualita, the corpse bride. Not a real corpse, just a detailed mannequin, but skeptical Amy has to sell the legend. When a mysterious Frenchman rolls into town, Amy learns a whole new side to La Pascualita's story and stumbles into the middle of a tale of love lost that might be found again.
EXCERPT:It was a 1936 Ford Tudor, lovingly restored with a mirror chrome finish. There was nothing like it on the streets of Chihuahua; it caught every eye as it purred down the road. The windows were tinted, obscuring the driver as if the glare of the sun didn’t accomplish that already, but as the brilliant machine stalked into town, it seemed to bring a shift in the wind. The cold front rolled in, a chill gust that speared through the mid August heat. People found themselves shivering, breaths misting on the air. Their ears popped as the pressure bottomed out and the first crack of thunder rumbled as the chrome car pulled to a stop across the street from La Popular dress and bridal shop. La Pascualita stood in the window, bearing the latest fashion, the same small, mysterious smile on her lips. The clashing clouds overhead imitated the churning mood of the vehicle’s occupant who blew a stream of cheroot smoke through his nostrils behind the tinted windshield. “I’ve found you at last, ma cherie.”

Amelia In The Red DressBy Alana Delacroix
Kieran knows one thing about the mysterious Amelia--she's all he wants in a woman. But will he still love her once he knows her secret?
EXCERPT:“Have you ever seen a ghost?” he asks.“Yes.” She doesn’t say anything else, but squints at the people coming down the stairs to the subway platform as if seeking a friend.“Like what?” She turns to him. “I’ve seen a few. Some are little wisps, floating colors or spheres. Some are like the ones you see online, a pale and transparent person.”He stares at her, wondering if she’s putting him on. “Really?” he asks.“The ones you see are bad, but worse are the ones you only feel,” she says. She shudders. “They burrow right down into your psyche. It’s hard to shake, like trying not to think of pink elephants. By trying to forget the feeling, you end up obsessing about it.”“What do they feel like?”“Cold. Sadness. Fog.” She considers him and shrugs. “Negative space, if that makes sense.”It does. Funny how living humans can give the same sensation.

Excerpt:A feeling of dark foreboding, like storm clouds forming on the horizon before a violent storm, washed over them as Bruce maneuvered the Mercedes into the parking lot behind The Krysal Unicorn.Tristian was already there and it wasn’t to give his report. Bruce could feel the fury in Tristian’s magic signature hanging in the air. A silver tipped arrow penetrated the windshield, split the arm securing the rearview mirror, and stuck in the headrest a quarter inch from Bruce’s neck. Blue liquid oozed from the tip and a stream of red mist escaped from the other end of the arrow. “Hold your breath and don’t open the door or windows. The influx of fresh air will spread the poison.” He hissed though his teeth not daring to take a breath.Air pressure inside the vehicle changed, Angie’s head felt like it was going to explode. “Bruce.” She whispered into his mind. “I know, just a few seconds more, I’ve got it handled.” His deep smooth voice floated reassuringly in her mind, as he reached over caressing her shoulder. The pressure eased and the red mist sucked in on itself disappearing along with the oozing liquid. He pulled the arrow from the headrest, fingering the hole in the upholstery. Through gritted teeth, Bruce growled. “His first mistake was that he missed me. His second deadly mistake was he risked your life. That is unforgivable.” Those two things also told Bruce that Tristian wasn’t thinking clearly, fury was coloring his judgment. That gave Bruce an edge, though the attack caught him off guard. He hadn’t expected Tristian to attack putting his sister at risk. The console between them lowered to seat level. He deliberately added fuel to the fury burning inside Tristian. Bruce put his arm around Angie’s waist and pulled her against him, his lips pressed against hers then gently covered her mouth as his tongue traced the soft fullness of her lips. He drew back, touched his lips to hers again trailing them down to the pulsing hollow of her neck and whispered, “You’re going into the shop now, Willow is waiting just on the other side of the door. Please stay there, you’ll be able to remain in my mind just don’t interfere. I need your presence there as a calming one, Willow can help you.”
