When these worlds collide, and the things that go bump in the night come calling, can these two mend the rifts in each other and give them what they need?

Excerpt:
It was time. The last light of dusk was slipping into inky black and high overhead, through the canopy of clouds and pollution, the heavens have come alive with all the magnificence of the celestial sphere. Thousands of sights no human eye could ever see.The hour of the wolf, the time of the vampire, had come. The time to hunt, to feed...I inhaled the backstreet in a breath and a shiver slithered down my spine at the heavy perfume of things that didn’t bare contemplating. Needless to say, it was rank. Human cities often carried a certain pungency about them, so much waste and body odour, pressed together in such tight quarters, left its mark. They had gotten use to the stink and given enough time, even a vampire could adjust. But that place…Its particular ripeness was absolutely foul. I pressed on regardless. Lured by that single overpowering aroma that clung to this place. Beneath the stink of shit. Blood. It lead me like a carrot dangling in front of a donkey, teasing my fangs, my mouth watering.Sooner or later, the thirst always won. And I’d left it too long. The way was dark but up above and all around, the city burned bright. False light. Humanity’s instinctive terror of the dark and all that lurked within, cloaked by darkness, had driven them to harness the power of the sun and turn night into day. Edison’s great folly. The old man had sought to create a warm light for all mankind, warmth and safety for every home. Instead, his invention had made them arrogant. Naive. Man had grown careless, wrapped in their protective cocoon. So they’d forgotten the perils of the night, the hunters in the shadows and all the things that fed on them when the sun went down. And had allowed darkness to creep back into their world. I paused mid-stride. The trail swung off the beaten path and down the mouth of an alley a few meters ahead and i felt the instinctive thrill. I was getting close. Men. Four of them. All in leather and denim. Huddled so close together that to any passers-by, they looked just like any other a bunch of dudes out smoking, drinking, and whiling away a night on the town. But the smell was on them. Blood and fear. It was old, maybe weeks dry, but they were rank with it. And their eyes were all fixed on the mouth of the alley, waiting. They’d do. A small smirk tugged irresistibly at the corner of my mouth. It would be so easy.Though they gave no outward sign of noticing me, their hearts quickened as I walked into the open, the palpitations pulsing through their clothes. Then they all turned and the biggest of the group, a brute of a man with a face like a bulldog and a spider web tattoo etched across his shaved pate, stepped forward. “Hey man!”Spinning round, I did my best to look surprised as he pushed himself forward and walked towards me. The others fell into step, spreading to his left and right. “H-hi, can I help you?” I said, my voice shaky.“Yhea,” Spider Web’s stride quickened, moving in for the kill. “Gotta light?” His hand was in his jean’s pocket. No doubt a ploy to make me think he was reaching for his cigarettes. Idiot. He had something there. Its outline was clearly defined against the denim, but it was too long and thin to be anything like a carton of smokes. A flick knife probably. Knife crimes had been on the rise over the last couple of years. Easier to conceal than a firearm, with a considerably lower criminal sentence for carrying one if caught. They were out of the alley and encircling me, closing in. I pivoted right then left, making a show of trying to watch them all at once, of being afraid to have my back to even one of them. “E-excuse me?”
Just a few steps closer.

Character Profile: Caspian Zayle - Emerge and Submerge Mer Chronicles Books 1 and 2 by Tobie Easton #mermaid #fantasy

Hi, all! I’m really excited to be here today to introduce you to one of the characters from my series. His name is Caspian Zayle and he’s my protagonist’s best friend in all the world. When I do events, readers often ask me if Caspian is my favorite character, I think because my love for him comes through in the writing. But picking my favorite character from the Mer Chronicles is SO hard, since the truth is, I deeply love all my characters and, at this point, I’ve spent so much time with them that they feel very real to me. All I know is that while I was writing the series, any time a scene wasn’t working, I’d put Caspian into it and it would suddenly flow—like magic.
When I started Emerge, I knew that, like Lia, I would fall hard for Clay since he’s exactly the guy I would have crushed on in high school. But Caspian snuck up on me. I never expected I’d feel quite as strongly as I do about the observant, insightful merman with the silver tail who has been Lia’s closest friend since they were guppies. With the number of hours every day he spends swimming, I knew he’d be buff. And with his sandy bond hair falling into his ocean blue eyes, I knew he’d be handsome. But it was his personality, which (no pun intended) emerged as I was writing him, that really drew me in. He’s reserved, so it’s easy to underestimate him, but he’s so smart and caring—and he sincerely values learning, which is a trait I can’t resist.
Okay, I’ll stop gushing. Suffice it to say, Caspian, with his quiet contemplation and fierce loyalty, stole my heart. And I hope he does the same to readers.
Psst! Here’s the link to my Caspian inspiration board on Pinterest if you’d like to take a peek: https://www.pinterest.com/tobieeaston/caspian-mood-board/

Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid, but she’s never lived in the ocean. Ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality, war has ravaged the Seven Seas.
So Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?
That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay than ever. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with Clay, the harder it is for Lia to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

Teaser Excerpt Book 1:
As I swim back up, I angle my face just right. When I hit the surface, I flick my head back so my hair flips in a perfect cascade, sparkling with thousands of water droplets that catch the sunlight at every angle. Maybe it’s unfair to use a classic Mermaid move against Clay.

Lia and Clay's love has broken the Little Mermaid's curse, but their ever after may not be as happy as they planned. Lia is adamant about staying on land with Clay for her senior year despite her family's opportunity to move to the new, sparkling capital city below the waves. Before any decision about the future can be made, her family must endure Melusine and her father's trial, where new revelations will have far-reaching consequences that threaten what Lia holds most dear.
The verdict will shake Lia's whole world, calling into question her future with Clay, her feelings for Caspian, and the fate of all Merkind. As she wonders whom to trust, Lia sets out on a treacherous path that will lead her away from her sheltered Malibu home to a remote and mysterious school for Mermaids—Mermaids who may hold the secret to ancient magic Lia can use to either get back all she's lost or embark on a thrilling and dangerous journey where only she can define her fate.

Character Interview - Trudy Hicks Ghost Hunter Case One -The Deceit by Lori Zaremba

My niece made this cover for me when I showed her pictures of my characters that I found online. I Think Max Martin would be the perfect Jason.

Character Interview – Jason Young
(Lori) Hello Jason, Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule of hunting ghost and keeping an eye on Trudy, to stop by for this interview.
(Jason) Well, Zaremba, you’re the one that makes my schedule so busy, you and your damned fingertips pounding away on the keyboard.
(Lori) Geez, Jason what the hell has gotten into you? You’re usually not this cranky.
(Jason) Umm… now would be a good time for you to write in one of those long frustrated sighs you like to add before dialogue.
The truth is, I’m tired Zaremba, that crazy red-head you partnered me with is non-stop. Its constant, phantom attacks, nightmares, hunting ghosts, hell she even had me chasing a purse snatcher. This just isn’t normal…
Well, I hope you’re good with it because there’s a lot more abnormal to come.
Oh that’s just fantastic! But let me ask you; is it possible for you to write something nice and uncomplicated for a change?
Like what Jason? I can’t write in too many sex scenes; your romance with Trudy is just heating up. Besides, there has to be time for hunting ghost.
I’m not talking about more sex… though that’s a hell of a good idea. But seriously, I’m talking about something… just for me.
Like?
I don’t know, a solo fishing trip or a long ride on the Harley somewhere?
Really?
Yes really, please just humor me Miss Writer.
Okay, I’ll do this for you handsome, but then you got to answer some questions for this interview. Do we have a deal?
Deal. Now let’s hear it.
Hmmm…okay how about this.
A few minutes later, he found himself on his Harley racing along the shore, the roar of the engine drowning out his thoughts and clearing his head.
With no particular destination in mind, Jason navigated the sandy curves of the ocean drive, turning in, leaning down and powering out as he made his way north and far away from the Inn. The sun was intense and burned through the fabric of the t-shirt on his back. A salty sea spray misted him as the road veered closer to the surf, its refreshing coolness a welcome relief.
Tossing his head back and letting the frustration fade in the sunlight. Grinning now, the V-twins boomed with a robust snarl, drowning out the cry’s from the hungry seagulls that flew nearby. Rolling off the throttle and shifting gears, Jason accelerating to a breakneck speed.
Somewhere between joy and insanity, it was just what he needed.
…Jason? Hello…
What did you think?
Damn Zaremba, I knew there was a reason I loved you.
You don’t love me, sweetheart, you love Trudy.
I guess.
Stop it; you know you do. Now tell me your first impression of Trudy when you first met her?
Hmm, I thought it was a train wreck, but I couldn’t look away. She had this crazy hot pink hair and these weird leopard print glasses on. But damn, she was the most beautiful woman I ever laid eyes on. Trudy Hicks walked in like she owned the place. Confident, smart …she didn’t miss a single detail. I even caught her looking at my ass.
I don’t think there’s a woman alive who could resist checking out the back of your jeans Jason.
Yeah, but they’re not Trudy Hicks.
So what do you admire most about her?
Her big heart.
Can you elaborate?
She takes care of everyone, her family, her friends, me. Trudy would lay down her life for someone she loves, hell -probably even a stranger. That’s just who she is.
Yeah, our Trudy is pretty amazing.
What about you Jason? What do you like most about your character?
Falling, head over heels in love, with Trudy.
Okay, what scares you the most?
Falling, head over heels in love, with Trudy.
Jason?
I told you it’s a train wreck.
Jason, you must know it’s not going to get easier… but I will write in some incredible moments of bliss to make it up to you.
Please do…
Well my times up. Trudy is waiting in the control room. She wants to show me some strange footage she caught. Ha! How can it be any stranger than I’ve already seen?
Thank you, Jason for taking the time…. Door slams Jason is long gone.

Book Description
My job? I hunt ghosts. Not to prove they exist—because I already know they do—but to figure out why they’re still here.
My first big case leads me to a mansion on the Chicago Gold Coast, the previous home of a wealthy socialite who lived there until she accidentally fell to her death in 1927.
I’ve never been this determined—and excited—to solve a case like this one before. Pity I’m forced to work alongside a man whose sole purpose is to debunk paranormal activity. But the worst part? He’s gorgeous, and the more we work together, the more I realize I might be falling for him.
Together we’re delving deeper and deeper into the spiritual world. But the more secrets we uncover, the more pissed off these ghosts become; and that’s when I start to realize…we might be in way over our heads.

Excerpt:
Looking once again across the table at Jason, she noticed he was listening to his two-way radio.“I’ll go check it out,” Trudy heard him say as he excused himself.“Is everything all right?” Paul started to rise from the dinner table.“Everything is fine. Sit and relax. I have to go and check one of the cameras.” Jason slipped from the room.Trudy caught up to him at the base of the stairs. “What’s going on?”He looked at her warily. “One of the cameras on the third floor caught the door of your room slamming shut.”“Oh, I left it open for the dog when I came down to dinner.”“Jasmine?” He raised a questioning brow as he referred to the golden retriever who was sound asleep under the dining table.“No.” She bit her lip and tried not to laugh at his puzzled expression. “I left it open for the other dog that was whining and scratching at my door.”“Oh, I see, the imaginary one,” he quipped, climbing the stairs two at a time. Trudy was almost at a sprint to keep up, careful not to slip in her high heels. They finally reached the third floor. The air was so thick that Trudy could barely move her legs and felt the hair on the back of her neck rising in warning.“Shhh. Did you hear that?” A door slammed from inside her room.“What the hell was that?” Jason said as he reached for the door, looking down at her.“It’s probably just a little mouse,” she said, causing him to frown down at her before slowly turning the knob. They entered the room as quietly as possible, and a blast of frigid air struck them. Jason reached over to flip the switch for the light. Everything was normal. They quickly searched the room for any signs of a disturbance. The room was just as she left it, and the door to the bathroom was open as before. She couldn’t figure out what made the slamming noise that they heard.“Uh, were you typing an email earlier?” Jason asked, looking at her laptop.“Oh, yeah, to my mom. I forgot.”“You better take a look at this.”Trudy looked at the screen and saw her email wasstill up. She had written, “Hi, Mom. We’re at the house. All is well. Please...” That was where she stopped when she’d been interrupted by a phone call, and that was where it looked like the email went wild with, “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.”The two letters repeated the whole way down the page. “How is that possible?” she questioned.“Maybe your keys are stuck.” He bent down to get a better look at the keys then tapped them to see if they were sticking.“Please, there’s nothing wrong with the keys. Someone was playing.”“Who?”She rolled her eyes. “I’m not talking about a human.”“You think a ghost did this?” Humor danced around his mouth as he tried to keep from smiling.“Well, it certainly could be a possibility, and it is the reason we’re here.”“Not we, you. I’m here to look at things rationally.”“Rationally...really?” She was irritated, folding her arms over her chest and glaring at him. “What was rational about the events that led us into this room? And for the love of God, what was rational about what happened to you in the basement?”Jason sat on the bed, elbows on his knees, and looked down at the floor. “I don’t know, but I plan to find out.”She looked at him for a moment and could almost feel his confusion. He was a bit lost in all this chaos. She sat beside him and mimicked his pose. Trudy elbowed him on the arm, and the simple touch sent a thrill racing through her body. “I guess we have our work cut out for us.”
His gaze settled on her half-smile. “At least it won’t be boring.”Her heart did a somersault. “Yeah, I don’t do well with boring.”Feeling brazen, she leaned over and planted a quick kiss on his mouth. His eyes widened in surprise, and Trudy jumped up, grinning from ear to ear.“Let’s go, Mr. Young. They’re probably wondering what’s happened to us.” She was halfway out the door.Jason grabbed her hand before she could reach the hall and spun her around. His lips claimed hers before she could grasp what was happening. Trudy felt his hand on the small of her back molding her to him, while his other hand gently held her head. She felt a thrill like never before, and just as her knees started to give out, he released her.“Better hurry, Gertrude. Wouldn’t want anyone to think you were trying to take advantage of me in this here grand bedroom.” He smiled into her eyes, and once again she was lost. She shook her head to clear it and get some control of her senses.“We better go, or I’ll be taking advantage of you.” She laughed, and he did too. She loved the sound of it. She glanced over her shoulder. “I hope that damned camera of yours was turned off.”As they headed out the door, Jason walking just behind her, he grimaced when he saw the red light on the camera on and grunted, “Oh, shit.”

You don’t mind if I whisper, do you? Hastings Manor is full of ears, and people’s best pastime is gossip. Thank goodness I’m not that type of lady. But I have to speak my mind.My niece Isabel, the current Duchess of Sussex, has gone mad. She’s accommodating, here in Hastings Manor, street urchins. Street urchins! From Auckland’s rookery!Good gracious, I need a sherry. These street urchins don’t even have decent names and the youngest one, called Trigger—ptf!—spat on his teaspoon to clean it. The older, the one called Murk, I think he’s a thief or a murderer. Apparently, he can turn himself invisible. Invisible! So inappropriate. Those dark eyes mean trouble, mark my word, but Isabel thinks he’s charming. Poppycock, I say. I’m sure she’d like to dirty-puzzle with him. Oh, the horror. But does she listen to me? No one is listening to me anymore. A bunch of rebels they are. Now, where’s my sherry?

Book Description:
Auckland, 1884. The Supernaturals are frightened. Despite being able to do extraordinary things like teleporting or lighting a fire with a stare, a serial killer, the Heart Collector, is slaughtering them. He rips their chests open and removes their hearts.
While other aristocratic, nineteen-year-old girls spend time dancing, Isabel trains hard to become an MI7 agent—Military Intelligence Seventh Division, a crime squad run by Supernaturals. The Heart Collector murdered her best friend, and enrolling at MI7 is the best way to help catch the killer.
Isabel senses other people’s feelings as if they were her owns. But MI7’s leader is too worried about Isabel’s safety to let her join the team.
Eager to prove that her power is valuable, Isabel volunteers to meet Murk, a dangerous Supernatural man who can turn himself invisible. MI7 desperately tried to recruit him and failed.
She believes that her power is enough to convince Murk to become an MI7’s agent and help apprehend the Heart Collector. If he wants to attack her, his feelings will broadcast his intention, and she’ll be ready.
What Isabel isn’t ready for is to fall in love with the man who will collect her heart.

Chapter 1Auckland, 1884
One of the perks of being a duchess and the lady of Hastings Manor was that I could make my own decisions. Most of the time.I bunched a corner of my long brocade skirt and climbed the sweeping stairs toward Victor’s office. The bustle, heavy with satin ribbons, bounced lightly, tapping on the small of my back. On the landing, one of the little cleaning machines that roamed the house trotted around, buzzing as its brushes dusted the white marble floor. A puff of steam trailed behind it while its wheels and pistons whirred. I strode on, the star-bright tiles sparkling under my velvet slippers. The butler bowed stiffly, carrying a tray with tea and cakes that smelled of cinnamon. “Your Grace.” He stepped aside to let me pass.“Hollom.” My heels’ click-clacking noise died down on the blue rug covering the entrance in front of Victor’s office. I raised my fist to knock but stopped inches away from the gleaming, polished oak wood, needing a moment to collect myself. Victor had to see reason. Convincing him that my role in the investigation was vital wouldn’t be easy, but I was nineteen and properly trained in combat. More or less. The point was, I could face danger. My resolve wavered, and I bit the inside of my cheek. On light feet, I turned and slid inside my late father’s personal library. Victor’s supernatural hearing wouldn’t catch me in the room protected by thick walls, and the old leather-bound volumes calmed my nerves. I cleared my throat before rehashing my speech. “Victor, you’re the leader of Military Intelligence Seven, but as Duchess of Sussex, I have the right to . . .” I shook my head. This sounded patronizing. I took a deep breath to slow my pounding heart, glad that I wasn’t wearing a corset. Another perk of being a duchess. I squared my shoulders. A wrong word and Victor would dismiss me. “Victor, I kindly request… would you… I would appreciate if you assign me to the ongoing investigation on the Heart Collector, since I believe my skills can be an asset.” There. Simple, polite, and to the point. I jutted out my chin and smoothed my bodice. I should’ve worn my dark green dress. It made me look taller and older. This blue gown gave me a childish air with its velvet ribbons and budding roses. Too late. After another deep inhalation, I marched toward Victor’s office again and knocked on the door.“Come in.” The thick door muffled his deep voice.I wiped my sweaty hand on my skirt before turning the handle and stepping into the office that had once belonged to my father. Victor and his younger brother Jamie stood up from their stuffed chairs and bowed.“Good morning, Victor, Jamie.” After the dimly lit corridor, the sunlight streaming from the floor-to-ceiling window blinded me, and I squinted, closing the door behind me.I walked to the desk that occupied almost half of the room, keeping my eyes on Victor’s frowning face. “I need to talk to you.”Victor stretched out an arm, indicating the empty chairs. His serious expression added wisdom to his five and twenty years. “Of course, Isabel. Please, sit.”I perched on the very edge of the chair and set my back straight to not crush my bustle. Victor sat at his desk while Jamie settled himself next to the fireplace.“Is something the matter?” Jamie leaned forward, his blond hair swishing about his cheeks. “You are pale.”I faced him. “Well, I—” A dark blue bruise marked his chin, his bottom lip was split, and a fresh cut marred his forehead. “What happened to you?”Jamie clenched and unclenched his fists. “My encounter with one of the Supernaturals we’re trying to recruit didn’t end well.”I focused on Jamie, unleashed my power, and reached out for his feelings. A rush of energy flooded me, and heat warmed my chest. His anger, annoyance, and humiliation washed over me. Physical pain stabbed him as well. I gently prodded his body with my mental strength. His ribs hurt, and a cut on his back throbbed. His feelings left the sour taste of unripe grapes in my mouth. I swallowed. “This Supernatural must be particularly strong to hurt you.”Jamie stroked his bruised skin. A new wave of mortification surged from him. “He is moderately strong.”Moderately strong? Jamie could bend iron bars with two fingers and lift twenty times his weight. How strong was this Supernatural?Victor shifted his gaze to me. “What did you want to talk to me about?”“Exactly about this.” I nodded toward Jamie. “This Supernatural you want to recruit for the investigation on the Heart Collector.”Victor knitted his blond eyebrows in the same way Jamie would. “You don’t have to concern yourself with that. Jamie will soon make another attempt to meet this Supernatural.”“But.” I paused to read Victor’s feelings. His determination and mild exasperation reached me. It wasn’t a good start, but maybe my speech would convince him. “I would like you to allow me . . . I mean, to assign me to this mission since I request, kindly, I request kindly, that it would be me, myself, to do it.” Damn. So much for rehashing. I clasped my hands in my lap not to show how much they trembled. “I’d like it to be me.” I swallowed. If I weren’t so eager to get the job, I’d laugh at Victor’s scrunched face.I searched his feelings again. Even without my supernatural empathetic power, the hard set of his jaw and his narrowed icy blue eyes told me he wasn’t pleased. I cleared my throat. “I want to meet this Supernatural.” “You want what?” Jamie asked, propping an elbow on the mantelpiece.I ignored him. “What did you say his name was?”
“I didn’t.” Victor straightened the pile of documents on his desk, arranged quills and inkbottles, and loosened his bow tie.

I’m an entomologist and a soil biologist, which is a fancy way to say that I dig in the dirt, looking for bugs. Nature and books have always been my passion. I was a kid when I read The Lord Of The Ring and fell in love with fantasy novels.
When I discovered cosy mystery and crime novel, I fell in love with Hercules Poirot and Sherlock Holmes. Then I grew up and . . . Nah, I’m joking. I didn’t grow up. Don’t grow up, folks! It’s a trap.
